PERSONAL BEST:

“Girls” star Zosia Mamet attends the 2014 Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California in a Reem Acra dress accessorized with jewelry by Ofira and Lorraine Schwartz.

Reem Acra Fall 2013 Collection

Right?

We have to admit, it feels somewhat surprisingly conventional for her. We really hope all the bitching from all the bitchy red carpet commenters didn’t kill her natural style or make her think she had to run away from it. Still, we can’t do anything but praise this for being beautiful on its own merits but also for looking great on her. The more we look at it, the more we’re inclined to say it’s really the hair we have a problem with. She should’ve gone for more edge there because the gown, gorgeous as it is, looks like something Michelle Obama would wear.

We guess what we’re saying is, she should definitely continue to pursue this level of polish and glamour for the red carpet, but she should also remember to find some way to express her real style. This feels like too much of a compromise. But who knows? Maybe she’s in love with it. It is, after all, a little hard to tell with her.

    • Diego!

What a stunning dress! It looks gorgeous on her and she looks amazing! Congratulations! Her new stylist deserves a big bonus next Christmas!

    • Town

She actually looks clean and showered. Now only if she can put on a smile!

      • jw_ny

ya think?! That hair doesn’t look like its been washed in a month! And, while I’m on the subject…I wish she had straightened her part.

    • @Biting Panda

Love the hair cut! That had to be a dramatic change for her. Maybe more edge will come once she’s used to the shorter length?

So happy to see her in such a feminine and elegant dress. Very well done, Zosia.

      • Rhonda Shore

That’s what i thought, that the haircut looked so much better than the long stringy locks. She could probably work a pixie cut.

    • teensmom99

Couldn’t you tell that she’s beaming with joy.

    • Janet B

A winner; beautiful dress plus she looks sort of happy.
I like her shorter hair, but it does need a bit more styling for the RC.

    • Ms. Schmidt

The only thing bring down that dress is her glum expression. LOVE the ring.

      • Denise

I think she just suffers from resting-bitchface.

      • jen_vasm

Her expressions reads, “My mom made we wear this to school for Picture Day and I hate it.”
        But you look lovely, honey!

      • Janice Bartels

Objectively, I know this is a great dress. But all I can see are the giant black flowers above her hipbones. Are they ovaries? Should we draw a smile over her thighs? Are they watching me now? Can’t stop my eyes from resting on them.

    • MilaXX

I could make quibbles, but honestly I think she just looks pretty. Well done! The shot of her smiling is the best one of all.

      • Introspective

most definitely. she looks like shes trying to own her look when she’s smiling. and that alone goes such a long way for selling it.

and yes, pretty is the best word here. a word i dont often throw at the other “girls” besides allison, who wears pretty but yawn inducing clothing. atta girl zosia.

    • marlie

I like this; definitely a personal best for her. Bow, all she needs to do is wipe that smirk off her face, add a red lip (or even a darker burgundy), and we’d be in business.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

AND get the liner off her bottom lid. It closes them out and makes her look like she’s scowling, even on the very rare occasions that she isn’t.

    • Sobaika

I would cut someone for that ring. My gosh!

      • decormaven

Yes, I’ve been looking at Ofira tagged posts here at TLo and the Internet as well to get more info on that piece. Really nice ring- she scored the good stuff here.

    • Glam Dixie

I like everything pretty well, not in love with it, but that sharpie she used for eyeliner needs to be taken away.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Gorgeous look, but now that I’ve seen closeups of her face, maybe the eyeliner is a little bit too heavy, it makes her look a little bit cross-eyed.

      Other than that, attagirl!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I know that the heavy eyeliner is currently in, but it doesn’t work for every woman.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

I thought that eyeliner, or just the winged part, is aging her a lot.

    • schadenfreudelicious

Love the dress, but what is going on with her eyeliner/lashes?..when it looks like you have falsies on your lower lashes it might be time to take it back a notch…

      • http://dentsdelait.tumblr.com/ Nancy Marion

My eyes already ache from wearing contacts and looking at tiny thumbnail photos all day long… and now I’m having sympathy pains for her Alex DeLarge eye make-up choice. PEEL THEM OFF! aaaaa

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I agree, a personal best for Zosia. I like the shorter hair for her, too.

    • Nancer

While the dress is pretty, it definitely needed to be hemmed. And that hair! But yes, overall very nice.

    • LongTall_Sally

If she cut back on the eyeliner and added some lippy I’d call it a WERK.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

      Grumpy girl is grumpy.

    • megohd

“You might love my gorgeous dress. I’m miserable in it.”

    • ralish

I completely agree with your assessment (as if you needed it!) She looks beautiful and polished but it’s not even close to her usual style. I still might vote for her ‘Girls’ premiere look as a personal best because it seemed more “her.” (Or whatever the public perception of her is!)

    • Sarah

Good haircut! It’s a nice dress, but I don’t think she has the shoulders for those wide straps. A wider neckhole and thinner straps would suit her better, maybe. And a hem! Definitely looks nice, though, and I like that she stuck with her own hands, nail and jewelry-wise.

    • bellafigura1

This is a beautiful dress, but this is not her dress. She’s got a sad sack thing going on, and this is not helping somehow.

      • Little_Olive

Totally. Giuliana may have more waist than what this dress gives her. And the wide straps/almost cap sleeves are not her arms’ friends.

    • BobStPaul

I like the hair and this is definitely a best – by a mile.

    • mcbishop

She looks less miserable and unhappy to me, as simply a little uncomfortable at the attention. I sort of like her for that. Where is it written that serious young actresses need to also be pretend models? Kind of tired of fakey, vaseline-toothed, poseurs. She’s a quirky, interesting young woman, and she looks great here.

      • demidaemon

If she gets at least one shot with that smile every time she goes out, I don’t care what facial expressions she makes the rest of the time.

    • shirab

Am I not seeing the other earring, or is she just wearing one? And if so, is this a Thing now, the one-earring business? Emma Watson did that at this event, and I feel like I’ve noticed other recent instances.

      • Sarah

It is definitely a Thing. But Zosia has two, here.

        • kimmeister

She does? Did you see a pic on a different site, or do you have magical X-ray vision? :-)

          • Sarah

I checked a different site because Inquiring Minds Want to Know.

    • princessricky

is there some moratorium against colored lipstick i’m not aware of?

      • marlie

It has been for several months. And it’s not just non-colored lipstick, but lipstick that’s clearly the same color as the wearer’s face. It’s rage-inducing

      • kimmeister

The silly putty just moves around. They’re finally getting away from the silly putty shoes, but now they’re going for silly putty lipstick.

        • demidaemon

One of these days we’ll get the silly putty trifecta on a blond and we will all weep in unison.

    • Evan

I was stunned when I saw how good she looked. Love the dress. Wish she had a pop of color on the lips like the model.

    • Anna_Cecilia

Zosia! Well look at you all of a sudden! You look lovely in this dress, why the about to be shot in front of a firing squad expression?

    • GorgeousThings

All those “Girls” girls need to get themselves to a decent bra fitter! This is a PB, but it would be much better if she went full “tits up”.

    • Aurumgirl

I think she looks pretty. The only suggestion I’d make is for a pretty shade of red lipstick. She looks wonderful when she smiles.

    • JasmineAM

I LOVE thick brows, and even I think she needs a brow comb. She doesn’t even have to get rid of any hairs! Just brush them suckers down.

    • decormaven

This is a great look for her, from top to toe. Maybe a stronger lip, or a little smoothing of the hair, but these are minor niggles. I’m assuming that’s a ruby ring- it’s a stunner for sure.

      • filmcricket

Agreed, a stronger lip would really help this a lot. Otherwise it’s pretty great.

    • Anathema_Device

What an amazing dress. It is beautiful, but it doesn’t overpower her. I don’t totally dig the makeup. I might have gone for lighter eye makeup and more lip color.

    • TAGinMO

      Attagirl.

      • ovarB

        Agreed!

    • Sally Spannagle

She looks much better than her normal red carpet looks, but girl needs to learn how to smile! She always looks so sad. And she has slumped shoulders. That’s a thing for the GIRLS girls.

    • Dan_In_NYC

Her makeup and posture are hilariously bad, but I agree that this is an attagirl. She looks like she belongs there. Also agree that it’s not very HER, but a big step in the right direction.

    • Sam Smith

Clap, clap and look at that smile. but, stand up straight, what is it with the Girls’ cast slouchiness?

    • Blair Sylvester

My hunch is that she was trying to loudly say with her style I’m not Shoshanna so she tried to go to an edgy place. I think Michelle Dockery did the same thing . Also the boob area is not good but it’s a great dress and by and large she looks great

    • ailujailuj

wow – look at that. well done – gorgeous dress, even if she doesn’t like it. too bad she can’t do the black shiny hair like the model – so awesome.

    • kayleymaybe

Agree with the hair comment, and also LIPSTICK. Otherwise, gorgeous.

    • Imasewsure

I squeed when I saw this one… I don’t even mind the hair since it is also a personal best for her and a cute style. Plus the dress can handle the casual I think since it’s sort of casual dress up anyway. LOVE LOVE the improvement and the smile!!

    • Youbeguilemenot

Well, who knew a smile could be this transformative. Now practice to keep it on, honey. The dress has an oriental vibe I’m digging.

    • formerlyAnon

Personal best, indeed. I like the hair, though it feels a smidge casual for the dress.

    • VicD

It’s a personal best for her. Which is not saying much. Like the dress – wish it had been on someone who would treat it right with respect to styling.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

If only this had great makeup to match. Her face is a different colour from the rest of her. :( And even just a pale pink lipstick would have been a huge improvement..

    • frannyprof

Her face says she hates it. And would it kill her to slap on some lipstick?

    • Jessica Freeman

Definitely a personal best, but given her previous performances. I like the short hair, but it does need a little something. The make up is a touch cake-y and it definitely needed color on the lips. Whatever, my eyes aren’t burning. Loves it.

    • Clair Ellis

I think she looks great and honestly that’s the hair for her. She needs to keep it that length. Dress is beautiful. It might be more FLOTUS but she is rocking it. Also, she does look like she is enjoying it more than, well, anything else she’s ever worn.

    • omg_dora

She’s almost not annoying me at all in these pictures! Seriously, beautiful dress.

    • alyce1213

I think Zosia had a good month in December in Rebecca Minkoff and something else, so I’d call that her personal best.
This dress is really very nice, tasteful, but totally (expensive) Mother of the Bride and way too mature for her. I’d like to see her mom in this dress.
Hair – cut and then what — nothing.

    • LeelaST

She does always give off a “sad sack” vibe. Her hair cut is cute, maybe if it were the vibrant color of the tips instead of that mousey brown? But I love the gown, love B&W looks in general, especially the way the beading makes a sort of belt. Very pretty.

    • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

i did a little gasp when i saw it..i agree on the hair, she could have gone a little rock and roll and really knocked it out of the park, but this gown really sang on her…compared to her coworker who was letting that horrid yellow dress wear her, zosia is wearing this dress. 2 snaps miss thing, 2 snaps.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yay! Love this dress and I knew you gentleman would also. Love the haircut even if it is a little casual for the dress.

    • Little_Olive

I don’t like any of it. And yet it somehow is a personal best.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I knew this would show up as a Personal Best the minute I saw it! I still don’t like her hair or her makeup, but honestly, this is so far above anything else she’s ever worn ANYWHERE that I was shocked.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

She can be taught! Next: hair and makeup.

    • ScarlettHarlot

In words her character would understand: “That eyeliner is atrosh, Sosh.”

Love the dress on her, I wish her hair was a little more polished (a la Lady Mary Dockery).

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

What a great dress. I think I want that dress.

    • jay

That picture where she’s smiling? I actually sat bolt upright and shrieked with glee. THERE YOU GO

    • NYCGlamourpuss

There you go, LENA – see how one of your hipster co-stars does glamour? And see, she’s not even selling out to the man! ;-)

    • Tatiana Luján

      I love the haircut.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

Gah! I love this dress. I think it looks sensational on her.

    • chatoyante

      Hellooo, Mother of the Bride

    • countervail

It’s a beautiful dress, she’s a beautiful girl. I agree with the hair comment, it needs formalized to match the dress better. But my biggest beef with this look is the BRA! Half the time a gorgeous ensemble is ruined with the wrong undergarments. It’s like she has on a halter top under the dress making two floppy water balloons. It would have been 100x better with a bra that pulled the girls up and shaped them a little rounder.

      • demidaemon

Those Girls girls need to see a drag queen stat about the importance of proper undergarments.

    • Errick Loyola

      *snaps fingers* LOVING THIS SHIZ.

    • Call me Bee

Absolutely her personal best, her smirk (and the dragging hem) notwithstanding.

    • crash1212

I must confess to clutching my pearls over the fact that you criticized her hair! Considering the unwashed Cocker Spaniel hair she usually sports unless it’s some crazy braided abomination – THIS hair is a masterpiece. In fact, while I love the dress and think she looks great in it, it was the new hair that put this in the total win column for me. Humph.

      • amanda siegelson

thank you! i was thinking that TLo were on drugs, because it was mostly the hair that i love on her! the make-up is a travesty, but the hair –
        that’s a song!

      • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

Agreeing the hair is the best part! The dress is pretty and looks very good on her, but it also reads kinda old (and I’m old), so the hair saves it. Plus I am happy to see ANYTHING other than a strapless/mermaid/ballgown.

    • jw_ny

See, now I thought if TLo featured this that it’d be a GTNYD feature. Sure she does look nice and probably is close to a personal best, but it’s quite mature and subdued for her (her hair and makeup are truly awful tho.) I’d say pack this gown up and send it off to Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

    • Trickytrisha

Glorious dress, great shape for her. Glum isn’t the best accessory though, so when she smiles it transforms her. The hair looks like it has possibilities, but was just hacked off and left unstyled. Still, the dress is miles above her usual. Good for her.

    • KinoEye

Wowza. Look who came to work today! Never noticed before, but her eyes are the prettiest shade of brown.

    • Dreamwr8tr

Very White House Black Market. Brava! Hit the sunscreen though, Zosia.

    • Dagney

Wow, is she finding her voice? I love the earrings and the cocktail ring that kind don’t go, but then, they really do go because SHE is wearing them together. Zosia- you are a striking woman and I suspect you can pull off weird combinations and make them sing. Please go for it!

    • amaranth16

The dress is lovely, but Lena’s hair is apparently contagious.

    • Miss wks

      She looks AWESOME for 58!!

    • nannypoo

This is a huge step for her. The dress is pretty and it looks good on her. I like her haircut. It needs a little styling but we don’t want to frighten her off so we shouldn’t mention it. She’s wearing way too much eye makeup but, again, an effort was made. She’s giving the impression of taking it seriously. Well done.

    • suzq

Gorge. She looks as good as the model. Yeah, the hair could be better, but I have similar hair and what a pain it is to style. She looks really good.

    • Ragnarockette

Girlfriend needs a bra and some powder. Add a bold lip color, better hair, and correct posture and then we’re talking.

    • Adrianna Grężak

Is that what she looks like when she’s happy? I’d hate to see Zosia Mamet on a bad day

    • Lilithcat

Her boobs need better support, and she should stand up straight and get rid of that crooked part in her hair.

      Gown is gorgeous, though.

    • chauncey

“We really hope all the bitching from all the bitchy red carpet
commenters didn’t kill her natural style or make her think she had to
      run away from it.”

Relentless criticism for several years, and now a plaintive cry for authenticity. I thought it was exactly her “natural style” that you two have been eviscerating.

      • demidaemon

If “hideous dresses” was her natural style, maybe she did need to be corralled a little.

    • Pennymac

I was on the fence on this when I saw this, but looking at these stills and the jewelry details, I have to say this is quite awesome. I also like her hair this way.

    • rh33

As soon as I saw this I thought, “Ooooh, the uncles are going to like this!.” Well done!

    • sunflower

All she needs is a better bra and some lipstick! But seriously, she looks great, the best dressed of the ‘Girls’ girls IMO. I think she really pulls off the bob!

    • Lily-Rygh

She has a tiny bit of a titscrepancy going on and I could have used a least a touch of color on the lips, but this is a gorgeous dress and an overall gorgeous look! BRAVO, Darling! (Now go explain to your friend Lena how it’s done…)

    • Danielle

CLUTCH THE PEARLS I AM AMAZE

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Yes, personal best all the way. Maybe a bright lip?

    • TigerLaverada

I didn’t know she could look this good. LOVE the dress, and it suits her well.

    • Pterodactyl111

I think she looks happy with herself, which is an exciting turn of events for her.

    • demidaemon

That picture when she smiles + this dress = GORGEOUS.

    • quiltrx

I LOVE this dress! It really looks good on her. I don’t mind her hair. I think some earrings with some big, colored stones (I’m thinking emeralds or rubies) would have really added something.

    • CeeQ

Hey she looks DECENT. More than decent, she looks fantastic! Approved.

    • SierraDelta

The first thing I saw was ovaries prominently displayed.

    • majorbedhead

Wow, I’m quite surprised at this. She looks great here.

Can someone fill me in on the one earring trend? Is this a thing now?

    • Snailstsichr

Love the smile in the 4th photo. I’d smile, too, if I had that ring. This was one of my favorite looks at least in part because she looked like she was enjoying herself. Such an improvement. Hope to see more!

    • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

Aw, she looks amazing; new hair style, stunning dress. She’s young, evolving.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Needs some lip color, but otherwise looks great!

      • Candigirl1968

That and better posture – what’s up with the Girls women and not standing up straight?!?

    • MaryMcClelland

You’re never fully dressed without a smile.

    • webslice33

      she looks good..

    • judybrowni

      Gorg.

But Zhush the hair, put on some lip color damn it, hem that dragging dress half an inch.

    • roverrun

Yes, you can tell she thinks it’s her personal best because she looks so…happy?…

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

      Great look, bad attitude.

    • Pbkmaine

This one and Mindy Kaling – stand up straight! Posture!
