Zooey Deschanel for Tommy Hilfiger Capsule Collection

Posted on January 30, 2014

Here’s your Cute of the Day from the Queen of the island nation of I’msocute. You wouldn’t think that a collaboration between the sporty Tommy Hilfiger and the Empress of Twee would necessarily work, but the collection of ’60s-inspired looks, somewhat nauseatingly called “To Tommy, From Zoey,” is actually really cute-chic and wearable.

It all looks good on her. It’s still her, working that slightly pixie girl vibe, but it feels a bit scaled back and freshened up. We dig it. If any Kittens are interested, it’s all retailing between $98 and $199 at Macy’s starting April 14th.

    Like it all

    • Alloy Jane

Me too! I like it all and want it all very much.

    • Jessica O’Connell

Me too, though no way I’d ever pay that much.

  • JauntyJohn

Not so crazy about the Wonder Bread print on dress #1 (though I suspect I’d like it on just-a-skirt) but on the whole these look sharp and super wearable. Dress #2 in particular I can see a gal getting a lot of mileage out of.

    • alyce1213

Wonder Bread! Now I can’t unsee. Might have been avoided with different colors (heaven forbid). But I don’t hate, it’s a cute shape.

      • Carrps

Yeah, that’s the Hilfiger palette. It can get very old time stewardess-y or like 4th of July themewear.

    • Betsy

      Wonder Bread print! Snorted!!

    • Adrianna Grężak

Ironically I feel the complete opposite – I think the first dress is really cute, but the second is a bit costume

      • Meg0GayGuys6

I was thinking the same. I like the first, even though now I can’t unsee the Wonderbread ;), The second looks like a sailor costume.

      • jw_ny

me too. The 2nd one reminds me of a college cheerleader uniform…I do like it tho. Even after reading about the Wonderbread image some are getting of the 1st, I can see why they’d say it, but I doesn’t effect my perception of it and liking of it….not strong enough of an association imo.

      • in a pickle

I’m about 80% certain Billie Jean King owned dress #2 in the 70s. It’s cute, but looks weird to me without a racket.

      • CelandineM

The second dress screams “let’s get a well known designer to create fun and hip uniforms for the new image we are spinning for our airline.” It’s a cute uniform.

      • Jackie4g

I wore something similar in high school and rejoiced in the freedom of a knit dress. It may have been all polyester at the time, but in place of woven cottons, the range of motion knits gave to the wearer was spectacular. I like the whole collection. Brings me back………..

    • MilaXX

      and now I can’t unsee.

    • conniemd

The wonder bread look could have been tamed by having the scarf be in the red or blue color and broken up all the print.

  • Sarah

LOVE the navy dress. Looks great with Zooey’s eyes. Would look great with mine. And my hair. And my watch. And my bag….

    • Carrps

Yeah, I have almost exactly the same coloring as Zooey (not as cute, darn it), and I love all the pieces.

      • Sarah

Same skin & eyes for me, different hair, but red looks good with navy, too. Tis my favorite color to wear.

  • ewes_urn_aim

This totally gives me flashbacks to my childhood (late 60’s) when my older sisters wore outfits like these. That first one with the polka-dots totally tapped into my psyche! lol

    • Heather

Funny, because the only film I can stand her in (she’s actually good) is Almost Famous, where she plays the main character’s older sister, and runs away and becomes a stewardess. I think that film takes place in the early 70s, but anyway, the look works for her.

  • Bexxx

These are cute, even though I have a fiery, undying hatred for her. Hoping one day the price range here isn’t miles beyond what I can afford.

    • boweryboy

I share that hatred. She was married to my friend’s ex-girlfriend’s brother. I had this burning desire to ask what her opinion was on Zooey, but it was a unspoken understanding in our circle that you didn’t talk about that.

      • formerlyAnon

I’m left in the indefensible position of regretting the fact that you all had such good manners, since we are thusly deprived of scoop, however stale. But it is a far, far, better thing to have good manners with one’s friends and relatives, so I salute you.

        • boweryboy

Yes. Although I never met him.

          • Heather

Six Degrees of Zooey. A friend of mine has a sister who’s a singer-songwriter and they once sang together at an event in LA. Apparently she’s a decent person, but a terrible singer.

          • melisaurus

She has a limited vocal range, maybe 2 octaves. Probably a fan of Judy Garland and doesn’t seem to have much technique.

  • @Biting Panda

This really works for her. Keeping her shots head on and without her trademark, coyness was an excellent style choice. I am in a deep state of covet for her hair.

  • Aidan B

LOVE. This is a grown-up, slightly preppier version of her usually look that totally suits her. And I want all of it.

  • EveEve

Elizabeth Moss wouldda been fab in this look!

  • Belvane

Jean Shrimpton Lite. (Which sort of sounds like a special at Olive Garden.)

    • Carrps

There’s a name from my distant past! All those Yardley ads…

  • boweryboy

Cute looks, and yay to no black tights.

  • It’s a little 60’s flight attendant but that’s probably why I love it. I also LOVED the collection of flight attendant outfits from that era that Southwest had on display at their training center. I wanted pretty much every single (mostly orange) piece. 🙂

    • @Biting Panda

Remember how cute she is at the end of Almost Famous?

    • kimmeister

Weren’t they still called stewardesses in the 60’s?

  • clatie

  • Eovaai

I am SO going to buy every single piece in this collection

  • Lilah

What? She’s not wearing black tights. I barely recognized her.

  • lunchcoma

Oh no. I actually like these dresses. I like that second one enough that I kind of want to own it. How can I actually like something associated with Zooey Deschanel?

  • MilaXX

I really like this. It’s takes the nauseating edge off her usual brand of twee-ness. Kudos to the hair and makeup team as well. They keep things Zooey, but not saccharine.

  • Rand Ortega

No tights (though I do detect a little photoshopping on the legs– what you can see of them). Love all of it.

  • kimmeister

Cute, for people who like their thighs to be in the breeze. I wish she could do her eyeliner like this all the time, rather than how she usually does it.

  • alyce1213

I like dress #1 very much, even with the Wonder Bread print.
The other two are very cheerleader, a little too costumey.

  • LeelaST

Not my style whatsoever but she looks adorably preppy.

  • Imasewsure

Price point seems about right for this Americana Tennis Girl collection. Preppy cute with a hipster vibe so perfect for Ms Z who looks great here

  • decormaven

If the first dress were longer, I’d swear it came from my mother’s closet around 1968. This collection is working – and at an affordable price point as well.

  • snarkalicious

    60’s flight attendant chic.

  • Love her. Man, I wish I could pull that cute look off. Too old. Too big boned.

  • Joyce VG

Love it! Very hot tennis vibe.

  • I don’t hate this. Color me shocked.

  • Diego!

I love everything here! She looks amazing! And I love all the cloths they pick for her.

  • warontara

It’s really cute, and I normally cannot stand her style!

  • sagecreek

    No. Just no.

  • SierraDelta

    What — no tights?

  • Jacqueline Wessel

She looks really cute in these pieces. I like the styles, but I have an irrational hatred of anything that is so “red, white and blue”.

  • jw_ny

Best she’s ever looked, and perfectly in her wheelhouse. And, not a black tight in sight! 🙂

I especially like the first polka dot dress…although the scarf/tie would have to go

  • fooepi

Is anybody else getting pop up windows on the mobile version of this site?

    • MilaXX

      Not I

  • Trickytrisha

    Nice and nautical.

  • Katesymae

The styling on looks 2 & 3 is refreshingly modern for her. Especially love the hair.

  • MarieLD

I think the whole line is going to be dresses, which is a shame, because 1. i enjoy most tommy hilfiger clothes, 2. i like zoey when she’s not too twee, but 3. i’m too old and have too much thigh to wear minis. A few tops to pair with jeans would have been nice.

  • Kate4queen

You could actually wear those in real life! Wow. And where I live the shopping choices are Walmart, Target. Macy’s and Ross. so I guess I’ll be pulling out my Macy’s card soon!

  • demidaemon

I’m surprised she was willing to have naked legs in so many shots.

    • Sarah

And her legs, they’re so normal! Even if it’s photoshop, she should trot ’em out more often.

      • demidaemon

        SO TRUE.

    • pookiesmom

She has bare legs on New Girl all the time. Not sure why she doesn’t on the RC, but she has some great stems on her. It must be a personal style preference.

  • TLJezebel

I wish I had these orange and blue outfits for this weekend!!!

  • brown-eyed girl

I wore a dress very similar to dress #1 in 1976. I like to think that I’m not old, I’m just retro.

  • Jenna

It’s cute… but nothing I couldn’t go into just about any mall shop and find. For under $100. Don’t really see anything that hasn’t been made a hundred times already really.

  • Danielle West

    Totally getting the 2nd dress.

  • Maya

    really cute!

  • SugarSnap108

I might buy that second dress. I think the sleeves keep it just this side of cheerleader.

  • lesmaha

    Love the first dress!

  • quiltrx

    Cute, I like it.

  • Lily-Rygh

I’m holding my head in shame and whispering “I love all of these and kinda want them…”

    • sharonimus

      Of course you do.

  • sharonimus

LOVE these. They remind me of my mom HARD. Wonder how many sizes there will be when they hit the stores….

  • Jacob Bowen

Now I know what to get my sister for her birthday (she is EXTREMELY lucky to have an older gay brother)!!!
ETA: God. I love them the more I look! Dress 2 it is!

  • JimMcC

I think she looks amazing in all of it, AND everything here could work on a wide range if everyday ladies.

And I love her! I don’t care what anybody else says!

    Vive la twee!

  • In_Stitches

The second reads Virgin Airlines stewardess costume and the first reads Project Runway: Virgin Airlines challenge. Not a fan of the red/white/blue combo here.

  • elemspbee

    Cute! will be looking out!

  • Tennis, anyone? Sorry, these do nothing for me. I keep seeing Julie McCoy, “Your Cruise Director”, on The Love Boat.

  • bertkeeter

Still can’t take him seriously as a designer…nope not going to happen!

  • Very cute. Another 9″ on all the dresses and I would be tempted for myself.

    • GreenTurtle

Yeah, the length on the first one is, um, not optimal. The fabric is so floaty. One stiff breeze, and the world gets to see the good china.

    • Jessica Freeman

Ha! I just said something similar. These dresses are not for the 6 ft. crowd.

      • I’m only 5’6″ish but I do not have the legs for dresses that short!

  • ScarlettHarlot

I like the clothing. I do wish they had gone a little easier on the lower lid liner, and also tried something else with her hair, especially those booms.

  • Megan Au

Don’t care if I look like a package of white bread – I want that first dress! I’ll be an adorable loaf of bread! And also just the skirt in the third pic please.

  • Jessica Freeman

I love the lot of these, but as a tall girl, I fear they will be too short for my liking. Very pretty.

  • Terri Ellis

I’d wear these… if the hems were just a bit lower. You don’t want to see that much of my thighs anymore.

  • MannahattaMamma

wear-able, that is, if you wear a size 2 or 4 or 0. Any body with any heft at all would look gawdawful. Plus: cheerleader vibe? Or my mom, circa 1972?

  • crash1212

Cute. Also, Zooey should hire whoever did her hair and makeup for this shoot and never let them go…best her head has looked in forever.

  • thecitysleeps

Oh so not my thing. They look like more colourful tennis outfits.

  • Michele

I love #2 and wish I were petite enough to wear it.

  • YoungSally

There’s a video of her dancing with her dog….she is venturing way too close to twee for me.

  • julnyes

She drives me round the bend, but I have to say I really like all these looks and would buy them if I wasn’t boycotting Macys 🙂

  • lobsterlen

Cute for a 4th of July picnic and that’s about it. The problem with the collection … its all very short and looks like tennis clothes.

  • Shawn EH

Somehow he toned down the twee while upping the sexy. Interesting. Hate the first dress, love the second.

  • yulaffin

I especially like the first one. I don’t do short dresses/skirts but I would definitely wear something like that with leggings.

  • AthenaJ

I’m actually finding all of these very tempting, but I’m guessing they’ll do better on those with more athletic/slender frames (which is what I’ve generally found with the 60’s inspired stuff)… so looks like I’m still sticking to my 50’s inspired dresses (woot Modcloth!) instead.

    • boweryboy

You hit the nail on the head. I was wondering how these would translate to an average sized woman and the results in my head were frightening. You have to have the figure of a pre-pubescent 10 year old boy to pull off a ’60s silhouette – then and now. Although,I am a sucker ’60s mod.

  • Lilithcat

Some cute stuff, but I don’t do Macy’s.

  • Liking this a lot!
