WERQ: Amy Adams in Antonio Berardi at the 2014 SAG Awards

Posted on January 20, 2014

We LOVED this.

“American Hustle” star Amy Adams attends the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California in an Antonio Berardi dress paired with Jimmy Choo shoes and Cartier jewelry.

It’s got color and shape and real personality to it. It looks ridiculously good on her and suits her to a T, because she likes retro but needs a little bit of edge. And it doesn’t feel like something that would probably look better on Nicole Kidman, like a lot of her choices do. This works specifically for her – and that’s a very good thing to see.

We’re not sure about that belt, though. The silver and blue theme in the styling is right on the verge of being overwhelming. The green in the earrings are a lovely – and welcome – addition.

This is a personal best for Ms. Adams!

      • ailujailuj

absolutely. I really liked it immediately. unfortunately she has shimmery seams from the pressing (shame!) but that is nitpick. and also kinda surprising. anyway, she just radiates.

      • tereliz

I almost agree. Something about the head isn’t sitting well with me. Maybe the hair, or the lippy, or both, but they seem at odds with the dress. Which is a strange turn of events since IMO it’s usually a case of her dress not living up to that gorgeous hair and face of hers. This dress is just magnificent on her, but the hair is a little aging with it (instead of the old-school Hollywood glam I think she was shooting for) and that lip color is making her face look a little sallow.

But she looks lovely over all!

        • colleenjanel

I don’t think the lipstick color suits her, and it sort of looks like they ran out of time before they could finish her eyes.

          • ballerinawithagun

I hate to say this, but she needs MORE make-up for this dress and hair. Otherwise, LOVE!!!! I didn’t think you boys would like it!

        • Aurumgirl

I think that because the eyes are so understated, she needs a more vibrant lipstick. This shade is a bit too timid and it doesn’t seem to balance properly with the intense blue of the dress.

          • sharonimus

Better to go with more oomph on the eyelids. Her hair precludes many lip color choices. Either way, girlina be lookin’ damn fine.

    • acevedob

Hm I’m not really loving that color. That shade of blue always looks dated to me. The cut (or literal cuts) looks great. The hair is divine. But the blue simply does not work for me.

      • melisaurus

I think it’s an amazing color for her. I don’t understand how a color could be dated.

        • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I am pretty sure this is cobalt blue, which is and always has been a classic. Thousands of pieces of glassware exist on the planet in this colour. Me personally I love this colour and I always will.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

I love the hair. The dress I’m not crazy about because I’m not generally fond of dresses with tricky cut-outs, and I think this dress needs a chestier lady to make it work. But I do love the color on her.

        • Mary229

Not to be TMI but Adams is topless in Hustle. She actually has a pretty decent sized chest. Especially considering she’s had a child and is in her late 30’s. She has boobs.

Like I feel weird talking about her boobs like that but…well…you know. There it is. I don’t think a top like this works on huge breasts. I would hate it on someone bigger I think.

          • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Oh, I well remember her boobs in American Hustle. But something about this dress makes her look a little flat-chested; perhaps it just needs more support.

            • Mary229

I think it’s that there is fear that if you push up in this dress you become one big boob on the side. I’ve had that issue before with dresses like this. It’s a tough call in terms of how you wear the bra.

But yeah she is def not flat chested considering how petite she is.

            • filmcricket

I remember when she was pregnant, her rack was spectacular, to be crude about it. And I’m quite impressed with this; there’s either some great built-in support in that bodice, or she she has magic post-nursing boobs because it’s still pretty great.

            • Mary229

Ok you said it so I don’t have to. Most women after they nurse lose their breasts. Her breasts for her age and given that she’s had a child are….spectacular. Like I’m not gonna lie that I noticed it in Hustle. And it’s clear they are real so I just have to assume she has good genes.

      • Sue Shea

i’m just glad she’s finally in a jewel tone instead of some pale ass neutral that completely washes her out.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

She’s giving it the 100% “American Hustle” hustle. She looks great!

      • demidaemon

Yes. She needs to embrace these styles more, as they really suit her.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

Fabulous. I love this color on her and her retro hair is gah…gorge. I agree about the belt. Not sure it’s befitting of the dress, and looks like it’s falling out of place.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

She should get one of everything made in this colour and wear this colour and also the shade of green in the earrings only, forever. :) Loved this look. I love the belt cos I love the sparkle.

I also love how she acted in the press room after American Hustle won – true class. The others were not behaving so awesomely.

      • Mary229

I was just about to say that if this wasn’t already a major werq it would become one by proxy bc she was the only one who was gracious and classy when the rest of her co- stars were acting like total and complete assholes. It’s a werq for class first and fashion second.

      • filmcricket

Oh no, really? What were they doing? I can easily believe it of Russell and Renner, actually.

        • Mary229

You should watch the video bc it’s hard to explain. Sadly, it was Lawrence and Cooper who really came off poorly. Pena too. I don’t know if they were drunk or what bc I expect better from Jennifer. It was really strange…..

          • filmcricket

I’ll try to find it when I get home.

          • http://www.jaimieteekell.com/ Jaimie

That’s the first time I’ve seen JLaw act like an entitled bitch. There is no getting around it, either. Who answers a question and curses their co-star in the middle for making them answer it? Just say, “Oh, he left, so I get to answer this!” and be done. Ugh. And before she had projected this mentality that she didn’t care if she sounded perfectly smart. Being caught off guard thinking Bradley Cooper was coming should not have fazed her. The question was easy.

        • lunchcoma

They weren’t the problem. Jennifer Lawrence crossed over the line from spunky to obnoxious, and Bradley Cooper just up and left! A lot of the questions were inane, but that’s not an appropriate way to react at all.

      • Catiline

Damn, seriously. Amy as well as Robert DeNiro were the only people on that podium to show any professionalism. DeNiro, people!! If the person who’s most earned the right to not give a fuck can manage, so can you.

        • pookiesmom

Contrast that with how Cate Blanchett (Cate freaking Blanchett!) and Lupita Nyong’o handled their interviews, and yeah. Pretty poor form.

I mean, the press questions were appallingly idiotic (Like: mind-blowingly bad. Like, how-the-holy-fuck-do-these-people-have-jobs bad), but come on people. They couldn’t suck it up for all of three minutes to put on an–if not nice, then at least not openly hostile–face for the press?

          • porcupie

Oh no, were Cate and Lupita rude as well?!

            • pookiesmom

No, I was contrasting J. Law & Bradley Cooper’s lousy behavior with Cate & Lupita’s because of how well Cate & Lupita handled the inane questions. Cate was a little snarky, but not overly hostile (she even sang a Beatles song!), and Lupita was the gloriously intelligent, articulate goddess that we all know & worship. I also forgot about Julia-Louis Dreyfus, who probably gave the best press of any of them. She was charming and gracious in addition to being well-spoken.

          • Mary229

They weren’t great questions but it was also clear that one journalist did not have English as their first language and the rudeness was just awful. I wondered how Amy felt after that bc she seemed embarrassed by their behavior.

            • pookiesmom

Agreed. They were like spoiled teenagers trying to get mom out of their room so they could get high. Just terrible. I felt so bad for Amy in all this; she tried so hard to salvage the interview, even apologizing for how she was “dominating” the questions (when she was the only one who could be bothered to answer). I definitely got a “too cool for school” vibe from the rest of the cast which–while not tremendously surprising–was pretty disappointing.

I hadn’t thought of the foreign language element–that’s a really good point. I mean, some of the questions were asked by native English speakers and were still downright awful (I’m referencing all of the press interviews, not just the American Hustle ones), but that still doesn’t excuse the fact that these people couldn’t be bothered to string a few sentences together for three minutes before they went off and got high in the bathroom, or whatever it is that they were so eager to do.

            • ailujailuj

(nodding). I bet their mothers were disappointed.

    • Molly

Really? Looks too futzy to me.

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

This just gorgeous. Perfect for her coloring. Love everything, even the belt.

    • msdamselfly

      Hair is lovely as well

    • jilly_d

LOVE! Dying for that pewter shoe. Could have done without the ring, but I won’t hold it against her. A personal best.

    • snarkykitten

I’m not seeing it. It looks like the kind of dress you’d wear to a black-tie event in post apocalyptia.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

If only Michonne were wearing this while beheading zombies.. that is a version of The Walking Dead I would really love to see.. :)

    • princessricky

dang -she totally nailed ‘do me’ and ‘be me’ with the same look!

    • Hoffa_w_HerHead

I wish she would have worn this to the Oscars because I don’t trust her to pick out a fabulous dress for that!

    • omg_dora

I think the dress is unflattering, badly fitted and trying too hard to be Fashion. The hair looks harsh and works against the sweetness of her face. The only thing I like about this outfit is the colors.

      • omg_dora

I see the Adams fangirls/boys are still out downvoting. All the best, guys. For the record, I love her almost as much as you do. Just not her outfits.

    • Mary229

Stunning. I have over the top love for her already but this is just beautiful. Beautiful shape. Gorgeous skin. She looks confident and powerful.

    • jw_ny

This is a beautiful color on her and I like the shape of the bodice. Why she loves those stripper heals is beyond me tho. They cause her body to make an odd shape…her back is arched which causes her belly and butt to each stick out in unflattering ways. She sometimes looks like she’s uncomfortable/in pain….

      • ailujailuj

I hate the stripper heels on anyone other than strippers… because.
but I think she needs the extra height (the platform under the sole is a more comfortable way to add height – plus the high heel) in order to wear these kinds of frocks and get that silhouette. and yes, they force her into contortions. the man who made the stiletto is proud.

    • KinoEye

Yay! My celebrity doppelganger finally looks as smashing as I wish I could! Love this.

    • MilaXX

Love the dress on he4. not crazy about the best. A Los not a. Fa of the hair, but I get the retro vibe she was going for. Still I love Tyne dress enough to overlook the other issues.

      • @Biting Panda

LoL, girl, your auto correct is ducking with you.

        • fursa_saida

I see what you did three.

        • MilaXX

LOL, It’s been a long day. I use TLo to keep me occupied when I’m in the doctor’s waiting room.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I am so unhappy that you fixed it! It was hilarious before.

            • MilaXX

It looked like a drunk tweet.

            • ailujailuj

              the best kinda tweet.

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Yes! And it must have been pretty early in the day for you. That’s why I loved it.

            • teensmom99

Now I’m sad I missed it. That’s what I get for not refreshing every 5 minutes.

    • filmcricket

So glad to see this one. I LOVED this. That is such a difficult shade of blue to pull off and she’s doing it with verve. It’s severely streamlined, like she seems to like, but with plenty of visual interest. As per usual, her skin looks amazing, and the jewelry is to DIE. The only thing I’m not sure about is the hair, but I can’t think of anything that would work better either, so there you go. At it’s not pulled back so tightly that you can’t appreciate the colour. This is my new favourite look of hers I think.

    • Anna

I don’t love the bust/neckline and the strap, but it fits like a dream. This could’ve failed spectacularly in so many ways but she is wearing the shit out of this. Colour is perfect for her.

    • ms_kat

I hate the shoes. Very expensive hookers shoes still look cheap. The pedicure color is great, though.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Marvel Anne, you are a wonder!

    • Tatiana Luján

The belt is pretty and doesn’t ruin the look, but I would have preferred the dress without it.

      • jw_ny

I thought that too, at first, but then I looked closer and noticed that there is a big seam at her waist…which the belt covers nicely. I do
like the belt, from the front…wish it would’ve been jeweled all the way around tho.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

This this the sign, Amy, that neutrals are bad for you, and rich colour is your BF-friggin-F.

      • Sue Shea

THANK YOU! i was beginning to think i was the only one who thought that those pale neutrals were not doing her any favors!

    • marlie

This was gorgeous. A modern twist on old Hollywood glamour. The color is stunning, and I love her hair and makeup. And I’d kill for those earrings.

    • ashtangajunkie

Stunning. I admire her commitment to the sky-high heels, much as I hate these particular ones.

    • @Biting Panda

Is she just saving up money for feet transplants? She is going to hobble herself, if she keeps going with those skyscraper shoes. No matter how I feel any of her looks, the ridiculously high heels detract from my positive thoughts.

      • Call me Bee

Fortunately, she, and all the ladystars with high heels, just have to walk the RC, then they can sit the rest of the evening. Much like us regular humans, who wear heels out to dinner, but only have to walk from the car to the table.

        • ailujailuj

woop wooop. I snark at the sneaker ladies in the city, but it is a necessary evil.

    • Call me Bee

A total WERQ! I like that her shoes were silver, but not in a shiny, Merry Christmas kind of way. Well done, Miss Amy!

    • texashistorian

What kind of fabric is this? I ask because it looks polyester, but there’s no way it would be… right? I noticed that Lupita wore the same kind of fabric. I see small stains (could be just water marks) in both of their dresses, so although they are beautiful clothes, I don’t think they’re ideal for an evening that includes lots of wine and food.

      • ballerinawithagun

I hated European designers for a long time because they used polyester knits. But, there is good and bad polyester. It is difficult to achieve a body hugging fit that you can sit down in, ( Oh no, I recently saw a Lucy episode where she even ha d to stand up in the car and then, being Lucy, split her dress at the high point of the evening!) That kind of fit is only achieved in man made fibers. Missoni at on point, had polyester declared a natural fiber because it came from oil, originally from the earth…. My husband is begging for a red body hugging dress…I finally found a suitable red, not tacky, poly knit. Referring back to Lupita, silk really gets water marks from steaming, etc.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

          Maybe someone drooled on her?

    • Frank_821

Hmmm. I don’t know. I’m guess I’m in the minority on this.

I kind of hated this look when i saw it. Yes the color is superb on her and fit is great but I felt that bust/neck/shoulder line is too complicated for her to handle.

But than again most of the SAG runway left me cold and disappointed

      • Monabel

I’m with you on this. Titscrepancy, also.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

While I think the color is great for Amy Adams, the cut of the bodice struck me as somewhat awkward, and I don’t love her hair, so those keep this from being a WERQ for me.

      • Melanie_Bee

I agree. There’s way too much going on with the top of that dress – asymmetry gone overboard. Ruins the whole look for me.

    • SayWhaaatNow

I just really don’t like that one boob cup.

    • teensmom99

I thought she wore the belt just for the uncles. Oh well! And I think the styling is almost too costume-like but I love it anyway. And I guess I prefer the 40s look to the 70s Cosmo girl look.

    • Shawn EH

Love, for all the stated reasons!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I love it up to the earlobes, but I think her hair is too stiff.

    • carnush

Wow! This is drop dead gorgeous.

    • Diego!

WERQ + standing ovation!!! She is shutting it down! Amazing and FLAWLESS look. Congratulations Miss Amy! 😀

    • Garcia Loca

I’m not into the hair so much, but the dress and accessories are stunning!

    • unbornfawn

She looks wonderful. I wish the bodice was just a teeny bit stiffer, it looks like its getting ready to melt.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Much improved, although the side view is awkward.

    • fashion4ever

WERQ and personal best. amazing. AH-MAY-ZING

    • CLoverleaf

Oh, and she FEELS it, too! Fabulous!

    • H2olovngrl

That lip color is too clashing for me. She needed a slightly pinker tone with that blue, IMO.

    • butterflysunita

Awesome. It’s an edgy dress and she’s rocking it.

    • alyce1213

Perfection. I love everything, head to toe, including that skinny metal belt — it’s fabulous.
      This is a WERQ.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

Home run! Agree it’s a WERQ!

    • bellafigura1

Love seeing her kill it. She was terrific in Her, plays it grunge-y, but adorable.

    • Trickytrisha

      Jolly well perfect.

    • AmeliaEve

I don’t actually like the dress at all, but it’s bold and it fits her perfectly. She is selling the hell out of it and I’m buying.

    • Milos Mom

I always think that these dresses looks unfinished. Sorry but I don’t care for those awkward boobie cup/shield bras. They just never look right and you would be concerned about it all evenng…. At least I know I would.

    • decormaven

Stunning. Those earrings are an inspired choice. The hair is a bit retro, but I think it adds the right touch of glam. Definite WERQ.

    • conniemd

Mad love for Miss Amy, she’s always been a personal favorite of mine. Glad to hear she was so classy as well.

    • ThaliaMenninger

The 30s film siren (Constance Bennett or Carole Lombard-ish) look suits her better than a 70s disco queen (Bianca Jagger or Marissa Berenson-ish) persona.

    • nannypoo

I hate this with a fiery passion from hell. Especially the hair.

    • brown-eyed girl

She’s got a Norma Desmond face in that last photo . . . “I’m ready for my close up!”

    • Lorelei_D

Yes, this is a WERQ, but if she didn’t have a belt, you’d bemoan the lack of belt. Be grateful for this belt!

    • quiltrx

I really like this on her! The hair is perfect, and the earrings are the icing on the cake. Love that last expression…”feel free to suck it.”

    • Lianne S

She looks so much like Rosemary Clooney in some of the shots from this night! It’s probably mostly the hair, but I think something about her eyebrows, or her eye makeup is doing it too. Love it!

    • Carly Clement

LOVE IT!!! but there is something not quiet right… i think her hair and dress dont fully match, the dress is a bit too sexy and slightly edgy and the hair is just too retro, maybe a simpler bun would have worked better.

    • boweryboy

A different color, say green or black or shimmery silver, and I would be all over it. She looks good, and she obviously feels it.

    • StillGary

    • Sabin

I thought it was Laura Bennett for a minute. Very pretty.

    • NBG

I love this. (I am also one of the people that thinks that you guys are pretty hard on her most of the time.) I love the color and I love the belt. The pop of green in the earrings is perfect for her coloring. Also, scrolling down and seeing a good shoe choice is so rare these days that I feel we should give her bonus points for it! You go, Miss Amy.

    • EEKstl

This is so striking and perfect on her…should she have saved this one for the Oscars? Just stunning, and her hair is spectacular. Best she’s ever looked on the RC.

    • stubbornthoughts

That color is a revelation on her. She’s certainly dressing to win an award, and I can’t help love her more for it.

    • CeeQ

“I’m here to pick up my Oscar, please. Sharpish.”
Loving this – can’t wait to see what she does for the main event.

    • Closet Crisis

Wow! Best she’s looked in a while (since the Vanity Fair spread IMHO).

    • Sue Shea

i love amy adams! so happy she finally received the memo about trying some jewel tones! :)

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Lovely in every way. (Although I can’t help but wonder how long it took to style her hair that way. Female celebrities must have special coping skills for sitting in the hair/makeup chair for hours at a time.) I’ll take the earrings when you’re through with them, Amy, thanksloveyoumeanit.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

This is the hair that Juliette L. should have done, and not the “George Washington w/Clip On Pony Tail” that someone else noted. Stunning.

    • Betsy

FINALLY, a “Do Me” dress for Miss Amy that isn’t a CHEAP “Do Me”. That two-toned red monstrosity at Golden Globes? Cheap “Do Me”. AND that one was basically a red sack that showed way too much central front bareness (not really cleavage if they don’t *meet* in the center front, is it?). This? Fantastically sexy, form-fitting without being squeezed into it, interesting architectural lines, and her figure (especially the “ladies”) shown off to perfection. WERQ!! And an A++!! We want more of THIS!!

    • mdcoon127

What is with the sudden obsession with orange lipstick?
