Tilda Swinton at the Chanel Fashion Show

Posted on January 22, 2014

Even the mighty Tilda has to succumb to Uncle Karl if she wants to sit front row at Chanel. This outfit is kind of hilariously off-model for her. There is literally not one item that looks like something she’d choose to wear herself. That doesn’t particularly bother us because it’s so transparent that it becomes a kind of show. What costumes will the stars be wearing for the Paris shows? If there’s anything that bothers us about the look, it’s that it casts Tilda in the role of fashion amateur and supplicant. Someone who just puts on what she’s told to. Sacrilege, we say. Sacrilege of the highest order.

But because she is The Mighty Tilda, she can take this look that doesn’t suit her and was clearly thrust upon her; this look that could not possibly work on anyone not walking a runway …

Tilda Swinton attends the Chanel show as part of Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2014 in Paris, France.

Chanel Pre-Fall 2014 Collection

… and actually make the damn thing work.

It’s possible Uncle Karl knew what he was doing here. We understand he has some talent in this arena. If you held that sweater up and asked us “Who is the celebrity that’ll be wearing this for the front row?” It never would occur to us to think of her. Ever. In a million years. That thing’s got Anne Hathaway or Chloe Moretz written all over it. It’s a pleasant -and oddly amusing – sort of surprise.

Love the look, hate the “shoes”.

    • Valdri8

She is all Lady Mary from the shins down, and all Sacagawea from the shins up!

    • Tatiana Luján

I don’t really understand the shoes. Are the socks part of the shoes?

      • chiubag

they’re clear heels with black toe tip, heel and underside.

        • Tatiana Luján

          Oh, dear!

        • MartyBellerMask

But sweet jesus. She even tucked the tights in such a way that the ribs line up just perfectly. Not a crinkle or wonky stripe to be seen. THAT takes talent.

    • kimmeister

It might be the first successful deployment of cream tights that I’ve ever seen on an adult woman.

      • SRQkitten

And the cream tights with the shoes? If lesser mortals tried that, we would look ridiculous. On Tilda, it’s almost working.

    • PostsYouCanDanceTo

I was hoping someone else had posted this, and you did!

You get a gold star – from Tilda’s sweater!

  • acevedob

Maybe it’s not the real Tilda. Maybe its a clone.

    • jspark

      Maybe she had a cold?

      • acevedob

        Blasphemy! Tilda, a cold? Never!!

        • jspark

Oh that’s right! Silly me, I forgot she is a snow fairy princess. They don’t get colds.

          • Almut Weidenprinzessin

  • MoHub

Only Tilda could make something so wrong so right.

And thank you, boys, for starting my morning off with both Lupita and Tilda.

  • CPK1

wish she had on boots. The shoes and tights are hideous

    • GorgeousThings

I like the shoes and tights, just not with the rest of that outfit.

  • YoungSally

Chanel is channeling Ralph Lauren circa 79, 81,……

    • brown-eyed girl

      Exactly what I thought.

    • ballerinawithagun

I have no words to describe how much I hated Ralph back then. I still find it difficult to look at his designs with an open mind. I’m scarred for life.

      • YoungSally

so you don’t dig the Santa Fe/Navaho Blanket/Concho buckle belt look? But remember how wonderfully waspy Clotide was in Trading Places as Dan Ackroyd’s fiancé?

  • hyperionic

Cute from the waist up, mentally deranged from the waist down.

    • Lizzyisi

This is the opposite of what I would say. Waist up = kindergarten teacher with delusions of haute couture; waist down = don’t you wish you were rich and beautiful enough to pull this off, too?

  • Jaeda Laurez

I hate those shoes and tights- they remind me of like, deer hooves for some reason. But i think the sweater, scarf, and even the skirt (if she’d worn some proper boots) were a great choice instead of her usual Swintonly style.

  • altalinda

Even the power of Tilda cannot make that tacky-ass sweater work. Close, but…

    • H2olovngrl

My twelve year old would kill for that sweater. Novelty sweaters with cutsie designs on them are a thing right now in SoCal middle school. So, Tilda, maybe not, pretreen, yes. I do think she is darn close to making this work, though. Having said that, it does looks very Blanchetty to me for some reason.

    • TLJezebel

I must agree. Tilda would never shop at Wal-Mart and it looks like that sweater was spawned in the bowels
      of that Hell hole.

  • PeaceBang

How does she do it? How does she do it? What is the alchemy that allows her to step out looking so amazingly SWINTON even in this outfit (which I really like, just not for her).

  • MannahattaMamma

I think we have to characterize the look TIlda is giving the camera as “game face,” as in “I’m trying here, people, cut me some slack because I’m wearing a blanket as a skirt and a non-ironic sweater from JC Penney and I’m sweaty and itchy and miserable.”

    • Valdri8

i was just about to post, : “Is it genius to take items that could be found in KMart and make them into high fashion.?” This shit has a Chris Guest movie practically writing itself.

      • filmcricket

I would see the shit out of that movie.

        • AnneElliot

God yes. Christopher Guest + fashion world = genius!!!

  • charlotte

Tilda could wear this to the next PTA meeting in order to appear like “one of the moms” (which will clearly not work because the other moms will still be in awe of her).

    • mommyca

That must be some sophisticated PTA meeting… the one I go to doesn’t even come close to this!

  • @Biting Panda

Seeing SWINTON as a granola PTA mom, breaks my soul.

Also, the fact that the main page has Tilda and Lupita, side by side, only fuel my desire to see them work together.

    • conniemd

“Granola PTA mom” – perfect description. As I said above, she really needed the cape to take the outfit to a more Tilda level of fierceness, which is what the outfit lacks.

  • Ah, Tilda. You show us again that ALL things are indeed possible.

  • Jessica Freeman

Respectfully disagree. This is too much shittery for even Tilda. Are those boot socks? Sock boots?

    • mlle

It looks to me like part of the shoes are see through plastic (will that trend please die?)

      • Jessica Freeman

Yes, I spent a little too much time leaned into the computer screen and realized it may be the dreaded plastic shoe. Either way, burn it all.

  • SewingSiren

Love it. Possibly because I”M freezing my ass off today. But it looks super chic and warm to me.

  • Jacob Bowen

Shoot me now kittens, put me out of my misery, because I…..actually like the tights/shoes combo…there I said it *exhales*!

    • demidaemon

I kind of like it too. I’ll have to join you in front of the firing squad.

      • formerlyAnon

Don’t worry gentlemen. I’m here ready to pull the trigger but La Swinton’s head distracted me and you are spared.

        • demidaemon

    • sweetestsith

I like it too, but it kind of reminds me of the little victorian shoes with contrasting tips. I love those, too precious for me, but I love them. They always remind me of Little Women for some reason, I think my paper doll Amy had a pair.

  • carnush

I’m guessing cowboy boots are too literal for Tilda. These shoes and stockings are just wacky.

  • Anna

Only Tilda could take a scarf and sweater from Old Navy and an Afghan throw worn as a skirt and actually make it look expensive.

Just…no on those tights and shoes, however.

  • Sam Smith

Scroll down fug, I like the sweater and scarf, but not the skirt.

    • MilaXX

I wish she was wearing a cute pair of black pants instead of that skirt.

Uncle Karl is a crazy ass bully! He took all the things that made the runway look have some weight & interest and left her with a grab bag of fluff. And yet…… Tilda says “Whatever, bitter old queen. Watch me own this shit!”

    • Deborah Cardillo

  • ojosazules

    This is upsetting.

  • Patrick Cleary

She’s embodying the character of the piece, I think. Kind of like how Chloe Sevigny becomes her alters, except Tilda knows it’s an act. This is very “lesbian crafts teacher in Montana.”

  • Love the jumper. Not a fan at all of the skirt.

  • Judy_S

I can’t imagine how she can look that good in such boring clothes.

  • SugarSnap108

Unbelievably disjointed look. But somehow it’s not a train wreck of knits, just because of her. She’s like the sun, drawing all in and making it part of her orbit of awesomeness. (Still, those are some fugly pieces.)

  • nannypoo

I like the sweater and scarf. They would look good with pants on just about anyone. The rest of it, though, makes her look like she’s about to strike out for the hills and castrate reindeer. Not a good look for anyone really.

  • Frank_821

It is a credit to the power of Tilda that she can salvage this look at all. But it is so not her. The look on her face really says “I’m making this work by sheer force of will. you better praise me! There’s a reason I’m the high priestess of Fuckinfantasticka”

god I really disliked that Dallas Chanel show

  • PeggyOC

I love the look in her eyes. Vengeance is coming. You can just tell.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like the scarf -sweater – skirt combo, but boy do those shoes bring the look down.
I really like the look on the model.

  • DagnyReardon

I think our boys have been pulling too many all nighters.

  • jw_ny

I don’t dislike the outfit, but it’s not for her….especially the stars.

  • capybara_cafe

Those tights/shoes make me want to gouge my eyes out.

  • eva-siloff

hate the sweater (right on with “JcPenney sweater” comment above), but I LOVE the skirt, shoes and tights.

  • mlle

The component bits (aside for the shoes) are nice, even though they don’t go together at all. Fortunately, the fashion gods bestowed upon Tilda the ability to pull off power clashing.

  • ashtangajunkie

I hate this outfit, but not on her. That’s serious Tilda Power.

  • decormaven

She’s great; the clothes are not. We’ve seen this “Americana” look one time too many.

  • KinoEye

Shelly Duvall in The Shining. Minus the shoes. Give her the boots from the runway and she’d look right at home swinging a bat at Jack Nicholson.

    • AnneElliot

If I were Tilda, I’d be swinging the bat at Karl Lagerfeld. Scrolldown fug.

    • CatherineRhodes

I wondered why it looked familiar.

    • Shawn EH

Finally someone acknowledges Shelly’s genius. Uh oh, does this mean Tilda = Olive Oyl?

  • Diego!

This looks like a Christmas outifit. Doesn’t it? The shoes are NOT for this look at all. But they are very Chanel

    • ShaoLinKitten

It totally does–looks like something that a wealthy mom would wear to her children’s holiday festival at school. The shoes ruined it for me too.

      • Diego!

  • Janet B

Funny, I thought she was going to be wearing a gorgeous pair of trousers.

eta: that’s one way to make over sized shoes fit

  • mjude

    I cant help myself, I love a good sock & shoe…

  • Danielle

    Poor lady was yarnbombed.

  • Jeff Warhurst

I love this outfit. If it were pants, and for a man, and not by Thom Browne, I’d snap it up in a second.

  • PastryGoddess

    Spats…she wins life

  • Chaiaiai

When did Chanel become Ralph Lauren? Kudos to Tilda for keeping a straight face.

  • marlie

I can totally seen Tilda wearing the sweater and the scarf, but that skirt is SO not her that it makes me mad. If she’d worn the sweater with a pair of her “signature” trousers, that would have made much more sense.

  • j regan p

Looks like something I recently knitted and threw on my couch. Its cold in NY but I never considered wearing it…

  • conniemd

I wish she had the cape the model wore. The cape looks totally Tilda, with that swooping sort of grandness. Without the cape, it just looks pedestrian.

    • formerlyAnon

AND the cape both partially obscures the odd sweater-skirt conjunction, it introduces a very nice contrasting field of color.

  • Belvane

Now, THAT… is chic. Natural-born chic. The shoes make the look.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I was OK with it until we got to the school marm-y shoes. I find those horribly off model for Swinton and I think they brought the look down. It was clearly meant to be worn with boots of some sort. I guess I just don’t like it. It looks comfy and all, but not for Tilda Swinton.

  • jilly_d

Cute sweater; the rest is an affront to the gods.

  • SophieCollier

I love the white shoes and stockings combinations. Anyway, as an actress, she can just pretend she’s playing a role and this is her costume. I think it’s pretty chic, although totally not a Tilda ensemble.

  • Qitkat

I don’t care what ya’ll say, this is the first time ever I have related to Tilda as an actual human woman. She looks beautiful, confident, and knows she looks great. That Uncle Karl, he’s one devious bitch, pulling this. The cape would have made it perfection, but less relatable.

You will have to gang up on me and pry my bitter kitten card from my cold, dead hands though.

    • Imasewsure

I’m not a huge fan of the skirt but I love everything else… I kind of think she might own a sweater like this anyway (for chopping wood or snowy walks with the hounds, etc) but I think she looks fantastic as well. Love those tights too for some strange reason!

  • SarahMT20

This would have been more interesting with a dark red shoe (or the boots on the model), the scarf the model is using and let’s face it, dark hair. Tilda’s coloring is so pale that this completely washes her out.

  • melanie0866

Yeah, hate the cable tights with shiny spectator pumps. No no no. Everything else works.

  • mdcoon127

She should have had the long vest on with it, it pulls the whole thing together, and the shoes – just no with those stockings

  • Bernadette

I actually adore the sweater/scarf on her, would have loved to see her work this in boots.

  • JaymeKay

Really? This looks like something my Mother wore in 1978, only with boots. The shoe paired with the stockings remind me of Mr. Peanut’s spats.

  • alliekat9090

Proof positive that Saint Tilda can wear a granny sweater and an Indian blanket and somehow make it look good.

  • stubbornthoughts

That is HER skirt, though. I can’t see anyone else pulling it off. Except if they were literally pulling it off.

  • mommyca

Can we start “scarf porn”? I want that scarf!!!!

  • Melanie

i literally cannot believe how well she is pulling this off. it is so awkward, but she looks completely graceful & at ease. that shoe/tights combination is wack!

  • I love her. She can do no wrong.

  • I love the shoes/stockings combo (can’t tell if it’s all-in-one or not…). They look warm and fabulous.

  • msdamselfly

That’s a gorgeous skirt. Would’ve looked cool with a black or red sweater.

  • How in the world does she do that? That whole ensemble would be laughable on anyone else and on her it looks chic. Even the tights. She’s a wonder.

  • Betsy

But, see, Anne Hathaway or Chloe Moretz would actually wear this sweater to the grocery store. Or someplace else like that. La Tilda will only wear it as a sort of costume. So it’s obvious that she has been “costumed” by her Uncle Karl, who wanted to show off a few of his pieces. That skirt, on the other hand, smacks of “hand me that fringed horse blanket, which I’ll whack into something to wear”. Sort of like Scarlett O’Hara did with the green velvet curtains!

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I can’t find anything to like about this except Tilda herself.

  • Sabin

It’s all the worst bits of late 70s street wear rolled into one. How does she make that work?

  • Gatto Nero

It’s partly her stature and unearthly beauty, but mostly that there’s nothing tentative in her demeanor. She knows exactly who she is, even in that alien get-up. (She gets that this is dress-up, and so do we.) That in itself commands respect and admiration.

  • Trickytrisha

Incredibly chic, as in unbelievably so. Cannot figure out how she plies her magic, but indeed, it is magical, especially those scarves. Brava, Ms. T. (with a slight nod to 80 year old Karl).

  • Ultimate proof she can make anything work.

  • Raymond Dnomyar

Everyone please close your eyes and raise your hands to the heavens in everlasting praise.

  • E. D.

She may be the only celebrity who could make that skirt work.

  • d4divine

She looks like the world’s most fabulous art professor.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I like to think that the divine Tilda wore this with the attitude that OK, Mr. Lagerfeld, if you think I can’t rock a sweater and fringed skirt, just watch!

  • traceyishere

    Alp anyone?

  • Presumptuous Insect

Stars! Stars! I adore stars! I have no taste and I don’t care!

  • quiltrx

“Fine, Uncle Karl, I’ll wear this ugly fucking shit. And it will look GOOD on me, because I will work my powers of fashion awesomeness. Then I will take this shit off, piss all over it, and leave it in the dressing room.”

  • Esz

She looks better than the model. Big time

  • Abdullah

It suits her. But tend to go for “i will be in the countryside this weekend, Ta Ta” look

  • formerlyAnon

I was dubious but on board till I hit the fringe/sock meeting ground. Had to bail.

Ms. Swinton would still overwhelm me with her cool, I’m sure, were I to encounter her in this melange.

    • Pennymac

Fringe/sock area has me sympathetically itching.
Still, she “Tilda’d it up”. Of sorts.

  • Somehow, La Swinton is pulling it all off. Digging that sweater though.

  • TippiH

RIght now I’m wearing a down jacket IN MY KITCHEN, waiting for the furnace repairman to arrive. It’s 4 fucking degrees outside, 46 in here. I’d be so much more stylish if I was wearing head-to-toe sweater like Tilda.

  • maggiemaybe

I like everything except the skirt. That skirt is seriously bumming my high.

  • Natalia H.

    I dig it.
