Taylor Swift in Los Angeles

Posted on January 22, 2014

Let’s check in on Tay, darlings. And when we say “check in,” we of course mean “judge.”

Taylor Swift leaves her ballet class in Los Angeles in a Wildfox Couture ‘Seeing Stars Lennon’ sweater paired with a Dolce&Gabbana ‘Sara’ bag.

Wildfox Couture ‘Seeing Stars Lennon’ Sweater

Way to be eighteen months behind Miley, girl.

We tease because we love. No, really. Because we love this sweater. It’s fun. Especially with shorts and sneakers … exactly the way Miley wore it, waaaaaay before Tay did.

We’re just sayin’ is all.

This seems more Tay-style:

Taylor Swift has lunch with Jaime King at Bouchon in Beverly Hills in a The Reformation ‘Jam’ dress paired with a Dolce&Gabbana ‘Sara’ bag.

The Reformation ‘Jam’ Dress

Also cute. Twee as fuck, but then we would expect no less from Princess Twee-as-fuck. We like Jaime King’s getup better.

I love that D&G bag. Probably cost two arms and a leg.

    • DagnyReardon

I might even go to one of her concerts if I could have that bag.

    • Rhonda Shore

The D&G bag didn’t go with the rest of the outfit, i think something less structured would have been better. And the sweater looks like it’s ripped. Tay’s much better in the black dress.

      • I wouldn’t go out in public in a sweater with just one rip. This one cost bunches of money and looks like something Goodwill would reject. I don’t get it.

        • Rhonda Shore

i get the shabby chic thing, but this just looked torn! And she’s not the shabby chic type…it doesn’t really suit here.

  • newleaf1

Cute dress. How does she sit in it? Maybe she just leans.

    • MoHub

I thought she just forgot her pants.

      • JulieTy

She forgot her pants BOTH TIMES!!

        • MoHub

Well, you can actually see the shorts with the sweater. Not so much with the dress.

  • Glam Dixie

Hey guys, guess how much I paid for this shitty sweater with holes in it? A sweater with shorts is like when guys wear sweatshirts with shorts, stupid. And that dress is waaaaay too short. That’s the mom part coming out. I’m not digging any of this.

    • marlie

I thought the dress was too short as well, but I thought it would be prudish of me to say so.

      • Glam Dixie

I can’t help it, I have a 17 year old daughter who is 5′ 9″ and all legs and neck and she loves dresses. We struggle to find them long enough for her, it’s really difficult but we manage. You try on a lot of things and some you just walk right on by because you can tell by looking at it. This dress is a walk right on by.

        • marlie

Heh, I was 5’9″ by the time I was ~14, so I think I understand what you were going through (now). My mother used to lament about finding age-appropriate clothes that fit properly.

          • filmcricket

Damn all of you tall people straight to hell.*

            *Okay, not really. ::pouts::

          • Glam Dixie

There’s a whole twitter feed for #TallGirlProblems lol, it’s hard shopping sometimes but otherwise, we don’t complain.

          • demidaemon

I’m with you, filmcricket. Let’s now rant about short people problems to even it out!*

            *Kidding. Mostly.

          • makeityourself

Me too. 8th grade, 5′ 10″ and 103 lbs. I was a vision! Thankfully I had begun sewing at age 12 and thereafter made all of my clothes. Except foe jeans, which in 1974 were purchased in the boys department because they offered lengths.

Miss Tay still doesn’t know what to do with her long body. There are often proportion issues with her clothes and I don’t think she looks as great as she could.

          • marlie

UGH. Yeah, I was that skinny, too. I’m SO glad I grew into my body eventually.

          • I was 5’11” by the 9th grade! Storebought prom dresses hit me at the chins, so I had my aunts make me my formals. That didn’t save me from white eyeliner or skater pants though.

        • Jaime

I was 5’7 by the time I was 12 and stopped at 5’8.5 – which doesn’t sound like much until you add in the fact that I’m built like an amazon (or a linebacker) with a sheer amount of presence. I come off like I’m six feet tall to most people.

But they simply don’t make clothes for women like me – long torso, short legs, mostly H-shaped with wide shoulders and an almighty ass. I live vicariously through those who *can* wear fun clothes instead of ONE brand of jeans and a neverending array of t-shirts.

          • “an almighty ass”

Thanking you in advance, I’m stealing the hell out of that phrase. 🙂

      • Danielle

When your dress is almost the same length as your companion’s shirt, it’s too short.

    • MoHub

One could probably buy a similar sweater for considerably less and then let the cat have at it.

    • kimmeister

Perhaps it’s meant to contrast with the puritanical top, but for me the juxtaposition is just jarring.

  • Introspective

loving both hers and jamie’s bags. *feeling* jamie’s boots. hard.

i knew i was having a deja vu moment with this sweater. not so impressed by it now or when miley wore it before as it feels like upmarket delia’s couture. but tay’s dress, while still twee, is pretty cute.

    • Anna

      I feel those boots too!

    • marlie

      Looooove Jaime’s bag.

    • marlie

I have boots very similar to those, and I LURVE them. They look great with just about everything, and I just feel sort of awesome in them. 🙂

      • Introspective

wheredya get em?? spill the beans girl…

        • marlie

They’re Nine West, but I got them at Macy’s last winter.

  • Jessica Freeman

I think it would have been more suitable to Taylor with some leggings. The second one is all her.

Of course she takes ballet. So very Taylor.

    • My mum takes ballet. Brilliant for strength and flexibility.

    • 3boysful

I think the photo caption should read “first” ballet class. Just saying that the leather on my ballet slippers quickly gets scuffed and worn from hitting the floor in the same spot.

Or perhaps those are new slippers. (But once you get a pair broken in, most people are loathe to break in new ones.)

  • Mindy Kaling wore it, too! And looked pretty cute in it. 😀

  • Latin Buddy

I’m sorry. No. I don’t really care how old you are, that dress is WAY too short. A gust of wind and we see the good China.

    • Love that expression!

      • MoHub

Bless Peach Carr! I miss her.

    • I have a serious question: how does she actually prevent that from happening? Did I miss a class in dress-wearing school? Is there a trick? Sticky tape? Tap shorts? In-skirt-boning? I am literally VERY curious.

      • Latin Buddy

My friend used to Hair Spray her things so that it wouldn’t early ride up. It worked well for her until she flashed the class with her her ass cheek after a visit to the ladiesroom and it got stuck. 5 years later and the girl STILL refuses to wear anything shorter than knee-length.

        • Hair spray only works to stop things riding up from static cling though. Doesn’t stop random gusts of wind!

          • Adrianna Grężak

Good to know, I have that problem with some tighter dresses!

          • Rubbing a little body lotion on your hands then smoothing it over your tights also helps, if you don’t happen to keep hairspray in the house.

      • Back in the day they used to have little weights sewed into the hem of dresses. Great idea but I’m not sure if it’s done anymore.

      • mixedupfiles

Wear briefs underneath (not underwear, but cheer-type briefs).

        • sweetestsith

Yep, briefs work. These days, just grab a pair of opaque leggings on sale and hack them off a couple inches below crotch length. It’s cheap and easy. I always wear slips (also trimmed to length if needed) so sticking/riding up isn’t a problem.

That said, there was a time I definitely did not care if people might look up my skirt. I wore underwear, was 22, and felt hot. It was a fun time in life… 🙂

      • melisaurus

        Silk shorts maybe? idk

      • altalinda

When I was in grade school, lo, those many years ago we all wore shorts under our dresses.

    • EveEve

And you know her good China is twee as f@#*.

      • colleenjanel

It’s probably glittery and has little pink bows.

        • melisaurus

          No glitter, Pearls and bows.

    • manina

I used to wear dresses that short when I was in High School (eons ago) and I never had a problem with wind or sitting, only with teachers trying to send me home to change, only I would come back with another dress just as short. I think she has the right body type for short dresses.

  • Laura Renee

LOVE that red lipstick, though. It’s sexy as hell, not at all twee.

  • Sarah

Interesting that that dress is called the “Jam” dress. Because while it suits TS, and looks good on her, it is about as far from anything having to do with jammin’ as I can imagine. Unless you mean jam with tea & crumpets, while you sip with yer pinky up in the air.

  • Erica_Vuitton

I know girlfriend has some seriously long legs but WOW that dress is short!! Like a goth ice skater. And my Mom would slap me if I paid for a sweater that tatty. Really?

    • Ginny Ellsworth

My fingers are twitching right now wanting to frog that sweater back a few inches and reknit the hem and cuffs.

    • largishbearishAtlish

Didn’t Lexie wear the same outfit (in white, with pixie collar) in Ice Castles (cue “please…don’t let this moment end…” sung by Melissa whatshername)

  • ailujailuj

    jamie king is queen.
D&G bag – to dance class? silly.

  • I’m always fascinated to see stars with friends. In my very non-star world I always think that music people hang out together, TV people hang out together etc. Anyway, love the dress but it is way too short and LOVE that they are both wearing serious lipstick.

    • demidaemon

Apparently, Taylor Swift is best friends with EVERYBODY female, famous, and in her age group. It’s just another annoying little thing about her.

      • Anna

There’s actually a hilarious video of her backstage with Selena Gomez at the Billboard Awards last May. Selena pauses to give Justin Bieber a hug and Taylor sticks her tongue out and makes an “Ick!” face in only the way that friends who disapprove of their friend’s on/off-again boyfriends can. And in this scenario, I’m completely on Taylor’s side.

If she quit being so goddamn precious all the time, THAT’S the Taylor I’d find interesting

  • fitzg

I am de-lurking to point out that my 7 year old has a much more interesting version of the sweater in turquoise with navy sequinned stars. That we bought at Kohl’s. Which I think proves the “twee” point, if any additional proof were needed, and suggests that Tay-tay paid WAY TOO MUCH.

    • random_poster

And I bet hers didn’t even come with holes. You had to pay 200x for those holes, so you did okay.

  • LeelaST

Love the black dress even if it does scream French Maid. Can’t with the moth-eaten, holy, poverty chic stuff no matter the wearer’s age. That’s just me though.

  • Anna

Also like the sweater on Miley better and Jaime King’s outfit better, especially the boots.

As far as Taylor herself goes: yawn. Now THIS one could use some tights.

  • Susan Velazquez

My mother would flip if I ever bought a torn sweater that cost $208

    • Jackie4g

And your mother would be entirely justified.

      Edited for a typo

    • LindaLaPaz

Actually, it’s $344.61. The 208 is pounds sterling.

      • Susan Velazquez

My mother would double flip! lol

  • marlie

I like Jaime King’s outfit SO much better. [Goes online to find similar blouse]

I like Tay’s first outfit fine, but it’s already been done. And it’s unfortunate that two celebs can’t happen to wear the same thing on the street, because of course everyone is going to judge and compare them. That sweater looks cute on both Tay and Miley; and I realized how much I miss the Miley “of old” after revisiting those photos of her.

As for Taylor’s second outfit… Meh. It’s TOO twee.

  • MilaXX

I remember Miley wearing that sweater. Didn’t Jessica Simpson also wear it back then? Anyway the second twee look is cute & definitely feels more like Tay’s style.

  • Jaime King’s sunglasses are fun.

  • Jaime King gives such good bitch face.

  • lrober03

I don’t know, I’m kinda digging Taylor’s ‘young widow on the prowl’ look

  • decormaven

Jaimie’s taking it in a walk here. Those boots are fierce, and love the bag. Pretty princess is still pretty princess, even with the shades.

    • Tracy_Flick

      I agree, Jaime looks great.

  • Darcy H

I will NEVER be on board with the whole “distressed” trend. I don’t even what to think about how much that sweater cost (although it is cute).

  • EveEve

    two questions:
    1. who is Tay’s stylist? and
    2. who is her bodyguard’s stylist? He is wearing the same bracelet in both places and I wonder what it is.

    • Janet B

Looks like a survival bracelet, made with para-cord.

    • tallgirl1204

Wow, what an eye. I don’t think about things like bodyguards, but of course that’s who and what he is. I ignored the random body part in the picture because I assumed it was some passerby. Unless he is an as-yet un-announced future subject of break-up songs?

  • DTLAFamilies

What TLo said about Miley: Nope. No bitchy comments here. She looks normal and cute – and we can’t ding anyone for that. Oh, what a difference 18 months can make.

  • judybrowni

Really, the sweater hasta be unraveled on the bottom, for it to be couture?

I guess because I see unraveled versions at the mall.

  • CPK1

i love the second look. it is twee as fuck but I cant help loving it

    • crash1212

I agree with you assessment completely! Really cute….and also twee as fuck. Also…she sure can wear the hell out of a pair of shades, can’t she?

  • Sobaika

I hate any sweater that comes with pre-made holes on principle alone.

    • sagecreek

      You are a wise woman.

    • Ginny Ellsworth

And shoot me now but I can’t stand ripped jeans. I spend untold hours repairing the holes my three guys can make in clothes and right now I have an alpaca sweater on the table that needs the neckline reknit because you know, baby it’s cold outside!

  • CPK1

jaime looks awesome but she is looking all Leann Rimes here which is freaking me out

  • Danielle

She must have a Wildfox store in her house. That’s all she wears.

  • AzSportsGirl

She even managed to turn the “Miley Redux look” into Twee-As-Fuck by exchanging the cool chucks for prissy keds without laces.

    • pinkxxa

Its just Taylor herself is twee, if I wore that first outfit I would not look twee. I can’t quite explain what it is but she makes EVERYTHING look twee. She could make nipple pasties look twee if you gave her a shot…

  • schadenfreudelicious

Back in my day that was just called moth eaten…*shakes fist, clutches pearls, and get off my lawn!*

  • amaranth16

I find her saccharine twee-ness pretty nauseating, but I can’t hate: I wish I had legs that long!

  • Hoffa_w_HerHead

She may be twee, but she has a personal style that is classy and is started to be a bit sexier. Without being skanky. Or trashy. I can’t hate!

    • pinkxxa

huh, that is true. Super twee, very annoying but at least she sticks to her guns…for now

  • I can’t with how much money she’s wearing to look that crap.

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I judge the people who are friends with Taylor Swift. She ruined Selena for me.

    • MarieLD

But Jennifer Lawrence seems to be friends with her. Where does that leave us?
Also as a sometime knitter, seeing that sweater torn — on purpose — makes me feel a little sick.

      • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Why did you have to tell me that JLaw is friends with her? I’m going to struggle with this news.

As a full time knitter (not that I get paid to knit, but that I knit a lot of the time), this sweater makes me angry. But that could also be the stench of Miley AND Taylor all over it. I’m not sure.

        • I thought they probably were from JLaw photobombing her at the Golden Globes. Taylor doesn’t seem like the sort of girl who would take that with good humour if you weren’t her friend.

  • Sam Smith

I think she looks cute in both outfits, yes twee but so what that is here style and it suits her.

  • bassfemme

That dress looks like a figure skater’s ensemble circa 1968, and not in a good way.

  • Sabin

Taylor Swift is taking a ballet class?

  • Ann VerWiebe

I know Taylor is tall – but taller than model tall! Yikes!

  • Samantha

Is it really this warm in LA right now? God, I hate them.

  • Shawn EH

Nina Dobrev could rock that second dress! So glad you called her on aping Miley-style!

  • Jeff Warhurst

I love the second look. She’s even making it work in old lady shoes.

  • largishbearishAtlish

What? no one else sees this as a walking Macy’s ad? (the red star is their logo is it not?) I can see her doing a walk thru (behind Martha Stewart of course) in one of those annoying ads…

  • ewes_urn_aim

TLO wrote on 7/10/12 “This outfit would be tragic on anyone over the age of 25 (and even then, that’s pushing it).” Swift is 24- Clock’s ticking honey!

  • Adrianna Grężak

I don’t mind the length of the dress, I think the long sleeves balance it. She also passes the arm/finger-tip test!

  • filmcricket

Her legs are amazing, the shades and bag are great, and I love the red lipstick on her. I can’t with either outfit though. I have no idea who Jaime King is, and I was thinking “Wow that handler dresses well, and is giving great ennui.” Her shades and boots are great too.

  • melisaurus

I would like to see Taylor do Margot Tennenbaum. Yes?

  • I cannot abide the ripped sweater. The dress is cute but too short. I agree: Jaime King for the win.

  • Jacob Bowen

If I wanted a moth-chewed sweater I would go in my grandma’s attic or go to Goodwill and pay $3.

  • Caaro3

    Bored stiff.

  • DeniseSchipani

    Cat got your sweater?

  • quiltrx

I know I’m missing the point, but I LOVE Jaime King’s blouse!

  • Lilak

What is the little black number? No, seriously.

Even if she passes the so-called fingertip test, it really can’t be considered a dress on Swifty because she can’t reach, lean, bend, or sit in it. And she probably shouldn’t lift anything above her waist, either (even her also-carefully-chosen handbag).

  • Gatto Nero

    Twee suits her.
    And Jaime King looks phenomenal.

  • kerryev

The look-at-my-bag arm starts to look aggressive in multiples.

    • Lilak

      Indeed. 😛

  • demidaemon

I’m sorry, but the ratty-ass sweater is a no for me, and that has nothing to do with the fact that Miley did it first. It has to do with it being an “artfully distressed” ratty ass sweater.

  • She looks super cute in both looks.

  • Diego!

The first sweater looks like a Wonder Woman in poverty. I don’t like it. The black dress is gorgeus. Twee indeed, but she is rocking it!

  • Kent Roby

I really really dislike all things Tay, but the vagina-flashing Pilgrim dress certainly seems “appropriate” for her persona.

  • allcapsERINN

Sick of her. Can’t we please ban her from this site for a while?

  • gefeylich

Well, wear ’em while you can, kid.

  • Krysta

Oh, my God, those two look self-conscious.

  • that first sot of the two of them, they look so self-satisfied. we are so chic, no?

  • the sweater looks way better on the model with the skinny pants. on tay-tay, it is bell shaped and hits at the same unfortunate place as the short shorts, making her look wide in the aft.
