Taylor Swift in Carolina Herrera at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards

Posted on January 14, 2014

Enh. It’s pretty. Pretty and boring.

Taylor Swift attends the 2014 Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California in a Carolina Herrera gown accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2014 Collection

But it’s clearly not setting our world on fire. The color-blocking on the bust isn’t very flattering to her actual bust. That’s the only real technical issue we can find in the dress. It really is gorgeous otherwise, even if it doesn’t feel very young or fresh.

You know what else doesn’t feel young and fresh? DAT HEAD. The makeup and earrings are both “just” okay, but the hair is flat-out awful. We think she should have gone for something quite a bit more dramatic than this.

Bottom line, it’s a dress someone in her mother’s generation could wear without a problem. If you’re going to pick something that conservative and mature for the red carpet, you should look for ways to provide some visual excitement in the makeup, hair and accessories.

Yeah, REALLY don’t like the hair. And her jewelries are Claire’s deluxe.

    • SugarSnap108

The hair is a mind-boggling choice, but at least it almost covers those hiddy earrings.

    • MK03

Claire’s deluxe? That would be The Icing.

Please don’t ask me how I know this.

      • Sarah

No, I don’t need you to. I know it. And you’re right – I forgot because I’d rather gouge my eyes out than go to a mall in my adult form, but I know these things because I used to frequent the mall in the way only an 80’s teen can.

    • kirkyo

      curling ribbons.

    • You know how when you get married and you’re not an hairdo kind of girl, but everyone persuades you that you need to be a princess on your Big Day and they have the gay guy from the one trendy salon in your small town come do your hair and it totally looks like you got your hair did special for the occasion? That’s what Tay-tay’s hair looks like.

      • I love that analogy! However all my friends who were in that position came out of the salon looking like drag queens doing a tribute to the Grand Ole Opry and washed their hair before the ceremony.

  • Scimommy

“Visual excitement?” This is Taylor Swift. Her looks range from bland to pretty to beautiful. “Excitement” is not on the menu.

    • Danielle

You want visual excitement? Look up the pics of Taylor doing a RC interview with JLaw coming up from behind.

  • charlotte

I’ve come to the conclusion that I prefer pretty and boring over all the GTINYD try-hards.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

I get your point, but at least the GTINYD try-hards give us something to talk (and laugh!) about!

      • charlotte

        True that!

  • E2_Remote

    Soporific as usual.

  • @Biting Panda

One of my least favorites. In motion, she looked like a tit flash waiting to happen. At least it’s not her normal washed out palette, but that’s not saying much in the way of praise.

    • marlie

You can’t really tell from the front, but from the side, that dress is thisclose to sliding right off her chest.

      • Meg0GayGuys6

From the side, I thought it looked like she went to the bathroom and the hem of her dress was caught in her underwear.

    • demidaemon

Also, the way that bodice is constructed is all kinds of wrong. It is doing strange things to her waist, and whoever constructed the back made some major flaws, in my opinion.

  • PlethoraofBooks

She doesn’t have a good stylist – she gets on her trends and then wears them to death. So if she is nominated for an Oscar, pretty and bland and matronly will probably be the dress we will see again.

    • xmixiex

an Oscar? was she actually nominated for something in a film? her ‘music’ cannot possibly be of that stature…

      • Bridget Smith

She could be nominated for the same song that got her nominated for the Golden Globe.

      • jilly_d

She was nominated for an Oscar last year, no? I remember it solely for the sheer look of horror on her face when Adele beat her out for it.

        • xmixiex

I guess that goes to show the amount of attention I pay this trick. I really never would have imagined that her music would get her that type of recognition… seeing as how it’s all atrocious…

        • PlethoraofBooks

Yep – that’s exactly what happened. Taylor Swiift gave major stank-face when Adele won – incredibly ungracious. So its being circulated that she could get nominated for her songwriting again this year.

          • demidaemon

Man, if she lost again, that would be all kinds of awesome.

  • Diego!

I think what aging the overall look is her hair and make up. Since she is not wearing a necklace, I would have told her to wear a long ponytail. And some smokey eyes. That would have been a killer look. The dress is gorgeous and fits her like a glove. But something is clearly missing here.

    • gigi kennedy

hit the nail on the head. feels unfinished in some way

      • Diego!

  • sugarkane105

Yeah, I was thinking during the show that a sleek ponytail would have helped this.

  • decormaven

The hair is the least pleasing style I’ve seen at the Golden Globes. This dress is so plain in its presentation, it needs some oomph in the hair or the accessories. Wearing too many rings on one hands is not oomph – just excess.

  • ralish

I love the gown to pieces (aside: is it hot pink, or is it just my monitor?) but her hair is pretty much a look-killer. Yikes.

  • Anna_Cecilia

I can see this on Allison Williams. Nice dress overall but the bust area looks like an American Apparel bandeau. If you compiled a flipbook with her red carpet looks you could probably use it to treat insomnia.

    • demidaemon

I can see it too. But she shouldn’t wear it, for the same reasons Taylor should have turned down this dress.

  • Spreecord

Isn’t “pretty and boring” 95% of her schtick?

    • demidaemon

The other 5% is “supposedly virginal.”

  • Super_Red

The dress is way too floofy in the back for my taste, but I absolutely love the hair. As someone in her age-range, if I had the chance to be on a red carpet, that’s exactly the hair I would want. Granted, she’s in the industry, so she should be over playing dress-up at this point, but to me it’s idealizes what I think a red carpet look should be. It has a very old-school glamour look to it, and I’ve always had a weakness there.

  • PeggyOC

You don’t have to go matchy with your lips, but you may want to rethink a red that clashes so strongly with the fuchsia of the dress.

  • French_Swede

Hair down and/or an exciting necklace would bring this up. The color is beautiful on her.

  • Isn’t Caroline Herrera a bit old for her? Anyway, I like the colour but I don’t like that her boobs are making a bid for freedom.

    • demidaemon

Yes, although it seems CH is trying to design for a slightly younger clientele. But this is so CH that anyone under 35 should immediately NAY it.

  • CLoverleaf

Nope. Hot pink and black is high school prom.

    • marlie

      80s high school prom.

  • Claudia Fernandes

that’s why i liked emma watson look so much

  • MissFern

    is the model cross-eyed?

  • Jaeda Laurez

Eh. It’s okay. It’s all “just good enough.”

  • Kimbolina

What is the black color blocking doing in the back? That weird triangular bit. No wonder the model is posing with that side hidden.

  • nannypoo

I think it’s beautiful. I hate her hair.

  • Carla_Charlton

She should have taken a page from Julie Bowen’s book — Julie’s dress at the Golden Globes was two colors and fairly conservative, but with youthfulness about it.

  • Liz Lake

T-Swift looks smug as hell in these photos, clearly she is happy to wear her old school middle age Hollywood glam to death. The hair and makeup are aging her, and the jewels are tacky. I don’t mind the dress, I actually think it’s gorgeous I’d just prefer it on somebody else… maybe J Law (!?) I don’t know….

  • “Pretty and boring”. that sums up how I feel about TayTay, and her dress too.

  • Stella Zawistowski

Taylor Swift, pretty and boring? You don’t say.

  • CatherineRhodes

“Pretty and boring” sums up most of her choices.

  • Introspective

so Im not impressed. cannot even muster snark. not even worth it. she’s so fucking boring.

  • marlie

Very pretty dress, and her makeup is good, too. Her hair is too stiff, though. And I’m just so tired of her. I get it, she’s pretty and she’s talented, and she has her aesthetic, but it’s positively snoozeworthy.

  • MilaXX

It’s pretty, but far too mature. I wish she had gone with a high pony to keep it youthful.

    • Sunraya

That’s a great idea!!! I would LOVE to see her wear one – she is pretty enough to pull it off.

  • YoungSally

It’s interesting to note that Tay and Lena are wearing the same sized bra cups.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

It’s a gorgeous dress, but the wide black band minimizes her bust, and the dress looks more formal and mature than Taylor has the fashion chops to pull off.

    • In_Stitches

I think that might have been the point. She looks to have had some ‘enhancements’ made recently and she’s had trouble wrangling them with some of her recent efforts.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I hadn’t read about any “enhancements”, but if she has had some work done she might still be getting used to different proportions.

        • alyce1213

I think she’s had “enhancements” for awhile now.

  • stubbornthoughts

On the red carpet, that bow feature thing kept making it seem like her dress was caught in her panties. Then I kept hoping her dress was caught in her panties. But then Jennifer Lawrence crept into the scene and all was right, anyway.

  • gabbilevy

Well, I think we officially have our awards season trend. Between Taylor, here, and Sandra, and Amy: Color-blocked de-flated hot air balloons worn as elaborately tied gowns. Bleh.

  • Jessica Freeman

Is the entire industry against necklaces with strapless gowns. So many looks could have been elevated. Not this one. Not with that hair.

  • thecitysleeps

Pretty and boring defines Taylor to a T. Meeeeeeeeeh.

  • guest2visits

For me, this is both young and fresh with a beautiful TS in it and perfectly retro at the same time. I love the hair-do since it heightens the retro quality. A sleek ponytail might be nice but I think it’s a great look as is.

  • queeniethebold

    She is a bore. A bitch-faced bore.

  • MondoWasRobbed

When I saw this on tv, I thought she had left the ladies room with her dress tucked up into her pantyhose.

  • teensmom99

Well, I’m thinking about no visual excitement and the fact that this wasn’t really her night . . ..so kind of appropriate–and Tay Tay is always nothing if not appropriate.

  • bouionice

Pretty & boring…was that the dress or the person wearing it? 🙂

  • VicD

    Yawn. Irrational hate list.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Actually, I really like this dress a lot! The rest of the look (i.e., hair, makeup, jewelry) is fine to me, but the dress is super cute.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Can’t believe some people fell all over this look like it was one of the highlights of the night, when it’s just okay.

  • boweryboy

The guy in the third photo looks pissed that Taylor Swfit stole his 63 year old wife’s dress, hair and make-up and is going to write a song about it.

  • Laylalola

The hair doesn’t look Old Hollywood glam to me, as some are suggesting. It looks like she’s thisclose to going with a full-blown 1940s housewife hairstyle.

  • HeisenbergHattie

Very pretty. Not boring. She looks happy.

  • AmeliaEve

    Modess…. because….

    • MoHub

Omigod! You nailed it. But only a few of us are of an age to remember that ad campaign.

  • GorgeousThings

Blaine Trump called. She wants her dress and hair back.

  • CT14

That curled bang is atrocious. An utter curling iron disaster.

  • ovarB

Perhaps she should take a red carpet sabbatical as I’m just plain tired of seeing her.

  • xmixiex

ooo, love the implant ripple side boob. chic.

  • Denise

I love the dress, boring maybe, but pretty. Hair is horrible. Her afterparty dress however, is far from boring..or pretty.

  • ailujailuj

how did this girl get ahold of my prom dress?

  • msdamselfly

  • Imasewsure

I think she thinks she’s Lana Turner… she’s not (but the dress is fine really)

  • kimmeister

I do kind of like her rings, had they been worn individually.

  • jilly_d

I actually loved this dress on her (and I’m no T-Swift defender, believe me). It’s princess-y enough to be in her wheelhouse, but it’s not covered in tulle and sparkles, and it’s an actual color. She definitely needed a better ‘do and a different lip, though.

  • carnush

I actively hate this. It’s dated and boring and needs to be worn with some edge or irony. She has not a drop of either.

  • filmcricket

I’m still so pleased she’s not wearing First Communion dresses that I’ll take this.

  • Little_Olive

She should try a tight ponytail, either side-parted or with her hair pulled back.

I like the dress when I saw it in other pictures, but now.. meh. I mean she is so young and thin, she can carry almost anything. Go ahead Tay-Tay. Live a little.

  • JasmineAM

From the side, this dress makes her boobs look bolted on.

  • That dress is riding far too low and is giving her a ridiculously elongated torso, in a bad photoshop kind of way. The lipstick clashes, and the hair is straight up beauty school. Not to mention it’s obscuring those earrings, which are pretty much the only point of visual interest she’s got going on.

I can’t figure out how someone so conventionally attractive and risk averse (who CLEARLY wants to be a fashion icon) gets it wrong so often.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

If she’d worked on the hair the gown would look soooo much better!

  • ScarlettHarlot

This looks like something Betty (Rosemary Clooney) would have worn in White Christmas. And the hair, egads. No.

  • EEKstl

She’s my Irrational Hatred Person (is that like an In Case of Emergency Person?), so it’s hard for me to do anything close to a clear-eyed assessment but yeah, what TLo said.

    • demidaemon

I have mixed feelings on Swifty. From what I’ve seen and heard of her personality she goes on my irrational hatred list, but I do enjoy her music quite it bit. It’s a tough position to be in.

  • I miss necklaces.

  • Yeah. Whatever Taylor Swift. Was she nominated or associated with anything at the Golden Globes? Like, did she write a song for something? My brain doesn’t process her existence.

    • Sue_Asponte

Yes, she was up for Best Original Song for “Sweeter Than Fiction” from One Chance (which I’d never heard of). She lost to Bono (& co.).

      • Ah! Thank you Sue!

        • Sue_Asponte

          You are most welcome. 🙂

      • Lisa_Co

In her interview with Guiliana, she said the movie isn’t out yet.

        • Sue_Asponte

          Ah, thanks!

          • Lisa_Co

            Glad I could help.

  • alyce1213

Beautiful gown, but not for her. It doesn’t flatter her, she looks too long from shoulder to waist, droopy. This dress need a more mature, fuller figure.

  • What is that stretchy flap of skin on her left side in the bottom pic??? She has so little body fat that she own skin is so tight? What?

  • Ruth Preston

Maybe it’s her styling, maybe it’s her facial expressions, maybe it’s the (voluminous) gown, but she’s starting to remind me more and more of one of those Barbie-type dolls you stick into a skirt-shaped cake. I’m not convinced her lower extremity is not just a plastic pick.

  • Jennifer Bober

Hey, she’s wearing a strong color. That’s a big step.

  • Pennymac

At least its not twee as fuck…..

  • Shug

As the My Friends Are Married blogger said, Taylor Swift is wearing Jessica McClintock.

  • Lily-Rygh

    Oh, whatEVER, Tay!

  • TigerLaverada

I hate that hair so much it doesn’t matter what else she’s got on. Talk about ugly and unflattering — she should fire whoever did that to her. Looking at that first pic is like getting a glimpse of what Tay will look like some years hence.

  • Pterodactyl111

I don’t like that lip color with the color of the dress.

  • DeTrop

I love Carolina Herrera and this is no exception. It’s lovely and says ‘haute couture’, at least to me.

  • Amanda Welliver

I like the repeated arches of her hair, her upper lip, and the bustline of the dress. It’s what didn’t like in Laura Carmichel’s dress: the separation in the bust matches the angles of her chin, lower lip, and nose.

  • demidaemon

Agreed. On FP, they were talking about this being super unexpected for her, being a color and all, which yes, but the style is totally Taylor. And lame.

  • quiltrx

I’m a sucker for black and hot pink, and even *I* think this is a really BORING effort at the combo. I kind of like the bangs portion of the hair, but I can’t with the rest and can’t imagine what would make it better.

  • Prom.

  • GillianHolroyd

The bustle deflated, the whole gown looks limp. Her hair looks like she just took the rollers out aaaaannd wrong color lipstick.

  • I love it.
