Taylor Schilling in Thakoon at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards

Posted on January 14, 2014

We think we’d like this color a lot on Miss Taylor if she was wearing any other kind of garment but a nightgown.

Because this is clearly a nightgown, right?

“Orange is the New Black” star Taylor Schilling attends the 2014 Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California in a Thakoon gown accessorized with a Swarovski clutch and Chanel jewelry.

Great color; sad dress. We can’t say we don’t like the accessories, but all that dripping bling paired with sleepwear isn’t working well. Also, that’s not what we’d call fresh-faced. She’s twenty-nine. Not that this makeup ages her, but it definitely isn’t doing anything for her. And to be honest, we’re not loving the hair, either. Sorry, Tay. We didn’t mean to be quite so critical when we started this off, but we realized very quickly that hey, we kinda hate all of this. Except the color.

And it looks accidentally tucked into her Spanks. Nice designing. Ugh. This is all just bad. Go with the color inspiration and start all over.

    • Glam Dixie

Haha, I was just scrolling down to say a nightgown she tucked into her pantyhose, but obvious post is obvious.

  • littlemac8

I said to myself, “Self, why is Ms Taylor going to bed with all her makeup on?”

    • ampg

More like she woke up with it still on. There’s some definite smearing going on around the eyes.

  • SuzyQuzey

I was stunned to learn that she is only 29. I thought she was mid-30s, at least.

    • muelonil

      Maybe she’s “29.”

      • @Biting Panda

        Mmmmm hmmm.

    • procrastinatrice

Yep, that makeup and hair definitely IS aging her a lot. I couldn’t even recognize her… saying she looks in her mid-30s is generous, IMHO.

      • Kristin McNamara

I agree. And yet strangely, my other thought about the make-up is that it kinda looks like what happens when a 12-year-old gets into Mommy’s make-up. I NEEDS ALL THE BLUE AND SILVER EYE SHADOW IN THE WORLD. SPARKLYYY. OOOOHHH. NOW HOT PINK LIPSTICK. GOD I’M SUCH A GROWN-UP!

        • demidaemon

Does that mean a twelve year old did her make-up?

    • Liz Lake

Me too. I disagree with TLo here. I thought the sad, sad makeup aged her quite a bit.

  • smh4748

Yeah, cut that hem off, and I’d totally wear that to bed! Looks really comfy.

Which is probably a sign that it shouldn’t be anywhere near a red carpet.

  • schadenfreudelicious

Give her some maribou mules and a boa and Ms Schilling will meet you in the boudoir…

  • Ragnarockette

    Prom-wear by Wet Seal.

Prom-hair by your friend’s sister in her first month of beauty school.

  • Sarah

I am feeling bad because I thought her hair looked rough on OITNB because, prison, and now I think maybe she just has problematic hair. I can’t help but think she looks nice here because my whole frame reference is her as an inmate, but I totally see how that is a fancy negligee, and her eye makeup is doing something bad to her sockets.

    • mshesterp

I honestly think she looked better on that show with no makeup (or “no makeup”) then when i see her on red carpets. She’s a beautiful woman who just doesn’t need much. This makeup job is a horror show.

    • demidaemon

She wore an updo last night on Chelsea Lately and she looked infinitely better.

It probably also helped that she was wearing clothes with some style to them instead of this limp “dress.”

      • Liz Lake

I don’t think her hair is great…. But I certainly liked the look better than straight-ironed to death Reese Witherspoon’s did. Although I definitely think there is room for improvement. If “Orange is the New Black” has the same success as “House of Cards” this Netflix star will hopefully have plenty of opportunities to get it right. That includes note leaving the house in nightgowns.

    • livesarah

It’s a very generic, one-size-fits-all makeup artist job, not something you’d expect to see from someone who works on a celeb. It’s exactly the kind of makeup that a ‘makeup artist’ put on me years ago when I went for a trial (thank god!) before my wedding. A style that the lady clearly used on everyone and which suited none of my features (I have reasonably deep-set eyes, like Ms Schilling), so I wound up doing the job myself on the day. I think she would have looked better going bare-faced than venturing out like this.

  • Youbeguilemenot

    1980s soap-opera realness.

  • Mismarker

She is a gorgeous woman so making her look good shouldn’t be that difficult. This is trashy and just plain sad.

    • Rhonda Shore

It looks really cheap. She needs gays, she is clearly clueless if she thought that looked like something you’d wear in public.

  • alyce1213

It’s really bad — like the nightgown part of a polyester peignoir set. Because the fabric looks so cheap, I can’t even appreciate, can’t even see if it’s a nice color.

    • Pennymac

I was just going to comment “CHEAP!” If Kmart had a formal wear department, this would be in it.

      • demidaemon

        Don’t they?

  • Adrianna Grężak

Meh, this is not how the star of a hit show should show up to an award show. I like the bottom detail, it’s a shame the top kills it

  • deelup

This screams Vegas lounge singer who just changed into something more comfortable in her suite.

  • imspinningaround

It’s real bad when I think the plebe in the background is dressed better than the talent.

(says the woman who wore a polka dot blouse to work today)

  • Sobaika

Tha hair and makeup is a bigger issue – giving her ‘sloppy at 1 am and texting the wrong guys’ face.

    • kimmeister

      I totally agree.

    • Danielle

      Whoooooo BEEN THERE

  • marlie

I love the color of the dress, and I even love the straps and lace at the bodice, but I wish there was a little more structure to make it less nightgown-y. Though the makeup looks like she slept in it, and her hair is a little too 80s.

    • Sarah

Makeup she slept in! That’s what’s wrong with it. I was having trubs figuring it out.

  • Suse

    Joan Van Ark hair!

    • Imasewsure

With a touch of the Gabor sisters too (maybe it’s the bling).

  • MilaXX

The only thing I like is the color & that bag.. The dress looks like lingerie, the hair is overdone and the makeup is cakey/greasy/clownish all at once. Leave the bag and go home Taylor, you look awful.

  • Wendy Todd

Yikes. She looks sexier in her prison jumpsuit for pity’s sake!

  • Imasewsure

    I would have guessed 44 … that’s not good

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

She and Melissa McCarthy need you queens next year since they can’t manage to dress themselves….

  • ailujailuj

    eh… it’s all annoying.

  • zenobar

This top is giving me Mid-90s Lacy Career Cami Realness. And that’s not good even in an ironic way.

  • ShaoLinKitten

The dress looks like a nightie and Taylor looks high as a kite.

  • Kathy Monkman

Yeah that waistline is terrible–like it’s caught on something and making her look wide which of course she is not!

  • amanda siegelson

i don’t care… i’ve been in taylor’s corner for about 4 years now. ‘mercy’ was one of the best shows that no one ever watched… so i just love her too much to judge her properly. the colour is fab for sure, tho.

  • sunflower

I don’t mind the dress, it’s the hair and makeup that make me sad. Very sad.

  • Lily-Rygh

Something here (everything?) is making me think of 70’s soft core…

    • Dagney

      Yeah, kind Ross-Dress-For-Less.

      • Dagney

        From the clearance rack.

  • suzq

Let’s just say Michelle Obama won’t be wearing this Thakoon.

  • msdamselfly

    Time for a different stylist

  • Janet B

    Bless her heart.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like the dress, but the hair and makeup are unflattering.

  • CatherineRhodes

I agree. Back to the orange jumpsuit for her.

  • Trickytrisha

    Poor choices. She needs help.

  • I love the earrings – with an updo, I could see them better. And I like the dress too – gorgeous colour.

  • Jecca2244

i think the hair is the worst part. adds to the boudoir look.

    • demidaemon

Personally, I’m going with the make-up as offender number one here.

  • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

I wanted to wash her face and brush her hair. And then start over. The dress is unfortunate too.

  • jw_ny

I’m shocked she’s 29…that hair and makeup IS aging. I’m getting a real ’70s vibe…the eye shadow I think, and a rather high priced call girl vibe too with the diamonds and neglige.

  • TAGinMO

How odd. In the profile shot she’s clearly got the shoulders back, etc., but the way the fabric sort of pulls everything in toward the waist in front makes her looks like Lena Dunham, posture-wise.

  • katiemckinnie

She’s *29*? Yikes. I think it’s the hair? The weird curls right by her eyes are just not doing it for me. And, yeah, total nightgown.

    • katiemckinnie

And, the makeup screams “Real Housewife” to me. She’s too pretty for that.

  • Fred Vaughn

The whole look ages her a BIT!

  • Anna_Cecilia

What Blanche Devereaux saw when she looked in the mirror. Would look fantastic whilst entertaining gentleman callers on the lanai: “I am single, I’m free on Saturday night and I can arch my back until my head touches my heels.”
    Pretty colour though.

  • quiltrx

That makeup is very Donna Mills in the 80s to me.
And Vanity Fair doesn’t design for the RC for a reason. No nightgowns please.

    • Valdri8

OMG SOOOOOOOO fucking Donna Mills – they could be shooting Knots Landing 2014! I love it

  • demidaemon

Oh, Taylor. Why didn’t you wear what you wore on Chelsea Lately last night. Comparing the two looks, I couldn’t even say it was the same person. The worst thing about the entire look, for me, though, is the horrible make-up.

  • LaSylphide

Agree about the hair, makeup, earrings, but I like the dress (and no, it doesn’t look like a nightgown to me, not any of mine – flannel – anyway).

  • katiessh

way harsh tai! but actually yeah, this isn’t great

  • ThaliaMenninger

Nightgown. She slept in the makeup, too.

  • Diego!

I HATE nightgowns on the RC. Despite the fact she brought color to it. It’s awful.

  • Not feeling the nightgown. Like the accessories, though.

  • carnush

Terrible dress, terrible hair, terrible makeup. Sad for such a pretty woman.

  • supri_supri

Thakoon, I am disappoint. Taylor looked so good on Chelsea Handler’s show on Monday, especially her hair and makeup which was modern and cool. She would do better in something sharp and tailored, not this limp JC Penney nightie.

  • KinoEye

Chapman, step up your game! No more negligees and CMA makeup for you.

  • Sally Spannagle

The makeup ages her, or maybe she’s just drunk and sweaty

    • Tracy_Flick

I totally agree. The hair + makeup is really failing for me. And I don’t even love the color, TBH. It’s a bit too minty for my taste.

  • Valdri8

The minute I saw her, I said “green is the new fugly”.

  • Lizzie B

    I just like saying “Thakoon.”

  • webslice33

  • Patti Tutone

Whoever styled Taylor for the movie The Lucky One needs to style her for everything, because she looked WAY better in that movie than she ever looks
    on the red carpet!

  • Maya

she’s 29?! didn’t she just play the parent to teenagers on that drug family drama? because i thought that person was in her 40s…

  • I hate her character on OITNB so much I cannot separate the character from the actress. She must be doing a good job, because whenever I see her face I just feel white-hot loathing.

  • 40 year old woman alert.
