Stana Katic in Naeem Khan at the People’s Choice Awards

Posted on January 09, 2014

Love it when a lady goes for high impact on the red carpet, especially if it’s an event where some people feel free to keep it low-key. A smart C- or B-Lister knows how to ramp up the attention when she has to share the night with A-listers, after all.

Oh, we just got into so much trouble with the Stana fan club.

But really, we’re paying her a compliment. This is gorgeous and it’s smart image-management.

Stana Katic attends the 2014 People’s Choice awards at Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles, California in a Naeem Khan gown.

Naeem Khan Spring 2014 Collection

But doesn’t it feel like her head just doesn’t go with the look? The hair’s kinda feh but the makeup looks plain wrong to us. And we think she could have – and probably should have – worn earrings with quite a bit more oomph to them than that.

What’s that lumpy, lining-looking stuff at her hip in the first photo? I’m not asking rhetorically – I really want to know what’s going on there….

    • Danielle

Looks like the seam got bunched up?

    • ballerinawithagun

Love the over all look of the dress, but that is very weird and distracting, definitely a bias issue at the hip.

    • Loramir

I’m just glad there IS lining. Something’s clearly a bit wonky with that seam but I think it looks so much classier lined down the sides. I think she looks great overall, though the hair and makeup and jewelry could be better.

    • MzzPants

From a sewing perspective: it looks like the lining has a French seam at the side and it was taken in at the hip by simply stitching the seam wider. That usually works, however, the alterations person either didn’t think through the final effect or didn’t expect a bunch of picky bitches like us to be examining the workmanship. That’s my guess. It’s hard to tell with out seeing the inside of the garment.

      • MzzPants

TMI, but for the record: It would have been better to pick the seam open and reconstruct the French seam at it’s original width. It can be done. And that concludes this episode of ‘Sewing With MzzPants’!

        • calbear97

Ooh, I like this show! :)

  • sagecreek

She looks wonderful. I could have done without the train, but let’s not quibble.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Definitely deserved a more intense look to carry that amazing dress off completely. Bigger earrings, and perhaps an updo.

    • Sobaika

I agree that better styling would better the overall look, I can’t help but think that it might push it over into ‘too much’ for the People’s Choice Awards.

  • ashtangajunkie

I loved this dress when I saw it last night, but I totally agree that her head doesn’t go with it, gorgeous as she is.

  • Mismarker

Nice job, hairstylist who just mimicked the runway hairstyle. Nice. job.

  • @Biting Panda

Ooft. TLo, if you’re in trouble with the Stana Fan club for mostly praising her, albeit calling her C List, then I should probably run and hide, because I HATE this. I hate the flesh tone fabric that is just a shade or two lighter than her actual skin tone, I hate the nude lip, I hate the way it hangs out and to the side at the back, I hate it all.

    • Mismarker

Brave soul, you! I agree on all accounts. But, really, if I could make one simple change, a burgundy lip could have saved this look.

      • formerlyAnon

        Agree about the lip.

    • SugarSnap108

I’m with you. Don’t like the skin-tone matching, and especially up close, the dress just looks odd to me.

      • 3boysful

The more I look at this, the more I hate the lining against her skin, or maybe it’s an excess of bronzer. Her lovely face almost looks dirty in some shots.

    • Jessica Freeman

Totally agree. And it has an effing train situation, as if it really needed MORE embroidered nude fabric.

    • butterflysunita

The dress is gorgeous but I don’t think it’s her dress at all.

    • demidaemon

I agree on some points. For me, the lining kills what could be a moment defining dress. It is the star here, when the red lace? detailing should be the star instead.

  • gabbilevy

This is such a significant improvement for her. Love me some Stana, but she struggles on the RC. This is pretty damn good.

    • Mismarker

Agreed. She never looks as good as she does on Castle. Girl can rock trousers and turtlenecks like nobody’s business.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Plus she has an enviable coat wardrobe on Castle.

        • Mismarker

          Oh, yes. And boots.

          • 3boysful

Heeled boots that she can sprint in!! Where does one buy those?!

          • Mismarker

Haha! Right? It bothered me for a few episodes and then I just accepted that she’s not human.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

At least they commented on it a few times.

          • formerlyAnon

Same place you can afford those boots & coats & NYC rent on NYC cop’s salary.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

And how many Herve Leger dresses? She can’t possibly have that big a trust fund.

      • Alyssa Caruso Ivins

seriously!!! what do they do to her on the show that makes her look so amazing? can’t they do the same for her red carpet appearances….?

  • cocohall

She looks good here on the RC, but my HD TV was not her friend when she was on screen. My daughter was watching with me and she is a fan of all things Castle. She said the dress made her look wide. And it just seemed a bit too formal compared to what most of the other ladies were wearing. She’s a beautiful woman, which I had not quite appreciated in terms of how she is dressed and styled on Castle.

  • shirab

Totally thought that was Mischa Barton at first.

    • twocee

Yes, I was going to totally post that. Honestly even after knowing who it is, I still think it’s Mischa.

    • KinoEye

My thoughts as well. Glad I’m not the only one!

  • Danielle

I don’t know who she is but that dress is stunning.

    • sagecreek

      Castle.

      • Danielle

Oh! That’s on my list of shows to start watching!

        • Mismarker

I started watching because of Fillion but now I think I enjoy Stana more. Their chemistry is really quite special.

          • Jennifer L.

Amen! She has set the bar high for strong-yet-still-feminine-and-complex female police/official-type characters. Relatedly, I have to avert my eyes during Almost Human whenever Minka Kelly is on.

          • marlie

I forgot that Minka is even on Almost Human; she’s that forgettable of a character.

          • Danielle

I had a thing for Minka on Friday Night Lights but now she’s meh to me.

          • Adriana_Paula

I’m shipping Karl Urban and Lili Taylor.

          • demidaemon

For me, no one will beat Kyra Sedgwick as Brenda Leigh Johnson (of The Closer) or Mary McDonnell as Sharon Raydor (of The Closer and Major Crimes).

          • Jennifer L.

Ooh yep, how could I forget Sharon Raydor? She really has a quiet but nonetheless steely strength that doesn’t tip into caricature.

          • demidaemon

I know. I was looking up her bio on wikipedia and it’s kind of awesome to see what Mary McDonell has done and been recognized for.

          • marlie

I’ve never really been able to get into the show (as much as I love FIllion), but I’ll watch it if I’m not doing anything else and just want the TV on, and I love their chemistry. And Fillion always crack me up.

          • akprincess72

I love the show. The chemistry is fabulous & it’s just fun. Plus that they are willing to reference the classics, the Rear Window episode was on as a rerun last night, it made me happy.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Do it. Like Mismarker, I started for Cap’n Tightpants but stayed for the chemistry. And Esposito.

          • Lower L

I love me some Esposito and Ryan. They crack me up.

          • formerlyAnon

            Especially Esposito.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

The bromance is funny, but Esposito is hot. I also love the way he calls them out on race. Very well written!

  • Cecilia Lin

The weird makeup is probably because apparently she went to the award show straight from Castle set after shooting…

    • Mismarker

Yes! She took it “day-to-night” by adding the brown eyeshadow wings.

    • bellarina

Also explains the hair style. She wears extensions on Castle, didn’t have time to take them off.

  • ralish

I think this is a dress that only looks good from afar. It’s stunning, but up close we can see all of the seams and linings which kills the impact. Up close, it’s much more figure-skater than fashion.

    • DuBey2

      You nailed it.

  • deelup

Someone cut this up for one of the figure skaters heading to Sochi. Send the hairdo too.

    • Imasewsure

Agreed… it is screaming for flesh-colored skates to complete the look

  • nannypoo

I think this is really pretty but I hate her hair.

  • MilaXX

I thought this looked really pretty last night. My only minor quibble is she could have used a better earring.

    • decormaven

Better earring was my first thought as well. I do love that red shade in the dress embellishment; wish it had been reflected
in another place, perhaps a hair adornment in an up-do.

  • formerlyAnon

Yes. The head lacks the pizzazz it should have had.
I’m thinking I’d have liked her hair darker for this, as well. The hair and face are a little too tone-on-tone.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Looks kind of like a half-arsed Miss Ukraine prototype for this year’s Miss Universe.

  • marlie

I rather love this. Stana has had varying degrees of success on the red carpet, but this one is pretty breathtaking. I don’t mind her hair, and the makeup is good, but I just don’t think it’s right for this dress. And some slightly larger earrings were definitely called for.

  • Anna_Cecilia

I totally thought this was Mischa Barton at first as well. I normally give sheer/illusion netting the side-eye, especially since it usually comes across as nude pantyhose with embroidery to me, but she’s working the shit out of the dress. Hair and makeup prevent it from being a full WERQ, but she looks damn good overall.

  • Laura Renee

Yeah, Kat Dennings pulled off the short version of this dress with much better effect and styling.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

      Yup, Kat Dennings FTW!

  • Nancer

She looks lovely, but I agree that the makeup lacks oomph. She gets a little bit lost. Still – I’m a fan!

  • Nika E

I like the dress just not on her even though I have no clue who she is.

  • Emily Dagger

Hasn’t someone else worn this dress recently? And much better? (or is that just my irrational Stana Katic hate showing through)

    • marlie

As Laura Renee mentioned, Kat Dennings wore a similar dress from the same collection a couple of months ago.

  • Sam Erin

Mischa, you look fantastic. Oh wait, whoops.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I love that the dress references henna designs. Agree that more high impact earrings, and more polished hair would have added to this look, but I do really like the dress.

  • jw_ny

I didn’t realize this is Beckett! Never knew her name and she looks different on the show than here.

I’m not crazy about the dress, but agree that it is an attention getter, and her body looks really good in it…go for impact when up for an award. Agree also that hair, makeup and accessories are lacking. Her hair is just sooo mousy, and the makeup is too subtle for that dress. Plus…her foundation not carried down onto her neck really bugs me.

  • In_Stitches

No thank you to decorated body-stockings.

  • Cheryl

Have never heard of this person, but I think she looks lovely. There is so much going on with this dress, I like the simple, small earrings. I like nude lipstick but this would have been nice with a wine coloured lip.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

To be so beautifully made up on the show, I am always astounded at how bad Stana’s hair and make-up are at appearances.

  • NDC_IPCentral

Haven’t been around these parts much because work beckons, but this lady (and I have no idea who she is, either) should fire her makeup team. Caramel face and pale neck? Dreadful.

The dress — I had thought the BK consensus was that the lace applique look was overdone and quite aging. Don’t like this on this unknown-to-me personality at all. Sheesh, the more I look at it, the more it looks like wounds seeping through beige bandages.

    • demidaemon

I think we are definitely grading on a curve here.

  • teensmom99

I confess–it’s an illusion netting dress that I like. Maybe I’ve become conditioned to them or maybe Khan knows what he’s doing.

    • marlie

      It’s Khan (and Elie Saab).

  • Tracy_Flick

I agree, the war paint is coming off kind of harsh and aging. But she did find the only acceptable way to wear a lace-over-nude, so high-five for that.

  • Imasewsure

Keep the head… ditch the dress… no love for it although it is kind of striking anyway

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Stana Katic sounds like it should be a superhero’s name, preferably one with electricity based powers. I like the dress, but I hate the illusion netting. The faux-naked ornamentation thing has gotten super tired. I blame Givenchy.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Killer dress, deployed at the right time for major impact – but the makeup is not working for me.

  • msdamselfly

The makeup and hair look good to me. Not sure what the complaint is.

  • MzzPants

While it is a hi-impact garment, I’m not feeling the love. Her face, neck, arms, and body are all different skin tones. Maybe it’s just the lighting, but I can’t look away….like watching a train wreck.

  • Trickytrisha

That’s quite a dress, if a tad overdone for the event perhaps. I’m only aware of who she is because she in Castle with Nathan Fillion, who starred in my favorite TV show EVAR… the late, much lamented Firefly.

  • veronkimo

I don’t like the dress. The nude portion just looks ugly to me.

  • ailujailuj

an absolutely beautiful fabric that has no business being worn.

  • bellarina

Dunno why you all mistaking her for misha barton, misha looks like a 40 y/o junkie poor girl. but if she’d clean up, she’d look like stana though. Lovely dress, the eye make up is bad.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Every time someone wears a dress in this fabric combo all I can think is – Marchesa did it first. It looks like the cardiovascular system in dress form.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

Hilarious! She can donate it to a med school when she’d done with it.

  • demidaemon

She gets kudos, for this definitely, but I feel like the lining kills the rest of the details.
