Scarlett Johansson in Max Mara on “David Letterman”

Posted on January 09, 2014

Someone’s definitely feeling like a movie star right now.

Scarlett Johansson at The Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City for an appearance on the “Late Show with David Letterman” in a MaxMara coat styled with Jimmy Choo sandals and Karen Walker sunglasses.

She tends toward retro ’40s-inspired looks and we’ve always felt it was a hit-or-miss style for her, but this one’s working like crazy. We say that even though we don’t like that coat all that much. The bottom half looks like the lining somehow wound up on the outside. But the shoes are pretty fabulous and the makeup, hair, shades and attitude are all giving us life. She’s selling it.

You utterly chic bitch, you! WERQ!!

    • Carleenml

      those shoes! j’adore!

      • Constant Reader

Me too. I need a pair (not that it will ever happen).

    • rloliveira

I love how none of the guys are looking at her. Which begs the question of what they are looking at instead? Cause I think Ms. Johannsson looks great.

    • Jessica Freeman

      Movie Star Realness. Brava!

    • Laura

The outfit is gorgeous and perfectly suited to her, but more than that, she looks like she *feels* amazing in it. That’s a WERQ!

    • hughman

Cute. But EVERY TIME I read “Karen Walker Sunglasses” in my head I’m all “Honey, what’s this? What’s going on? I thought we talked about that coat.”

      • Spreecord

        “Are we outside again?”

      • Danielle

I’m Anastasia Beaverhausen. Anastasia, like Russian royalty. Beaverhausen, like where the beaver live.

        • Spreecord

          Because I’m a lady, assface.

        • rebeemoon

Oh, how I miss that show!

        • DebbieLovesShoes

          Hahahaha. Gosh, I miss Karen.

      • MilaXX

I’ve been catching the repeats on WEtv. They show them in like 5 hour blocks. Still love that show.

        • Jecca2244

the episode where Grace steals the exercise routine still makes me laugh.

      • DebbieLovesShoes

Totally read your post in a Karen Walker voice!

    • mjude

LOVE IT. finally someone I know & she is a real star.

    • Jenny Moss

How are her feet not freezing?

      • greymain

girl is NOT standing on the corner in freezing NYC…she is limo’d from stop to stop. Shoes are FABULOUS!!!!

      • foodycatAlicia

I know. If it’s cold enough for cops to wear earmuffs it’s cold enough for closed toes and hosiery.

        • boweryboy

That sounds like something my mom would say. ☺

          • foodycatAlicia

Your mother must be a sensible woman!

            • boweryboy

A sensible mother of four daughters – all older than me. Some of her bon mots she tossed at my sisters were priceless.

      • GillianHolroyd

I gotta say, I’ve been in below-freezing weather in NYC, hanging around waiting for the airport bus in sandals, capris and a hoodie (because I’m *not* lugging winter clothes to the tropics) and maybe it’s some kind of Jedi mind meld but you don’t feel particularly cold.

Unless your core gets cold and then you’re doomed.

    • PlethoraofBooks

Snaps of approval darling, snaps of approval!

    • Scimommy

Yes, but wasn’t it like 20 degrees in NYC when she was doing this? #frostbite

      • marlie

She only has to walk the 10 feet from the limo to the door. If it meant that I could wear those shoes, I’d suck it up too.

        • Scimommy

I am (a) a cold wimp, and (b) don’t actually love the shoes that much. Too bling-y for me. But see your point.

          • kimmeister

I like the concept of the shoes, but the random, smaller adornments on the sides look like amoebas.

    • Rhonda Shore

I really do LOVE the hair and the rest of the styling. She looks fabulous. And her vocal performance in “Her” was pretty amazing.

    • OMM4

Can anyone find a link for those Karen Walker frames? I need to make them mine.

    • marlie

I love her shoes, I love her hair, that lipstick is making me SO happy, and I love the color of the dress she’s wearing. The coat… not so much. But attagirl!

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

GO AND GET IT, GIRL. And while you’re up, bring me those shoes. Size 5.

    • boldprint

my kingdom for that coat! and I love her in a red lip.

    • International Model

Lips, hips and tits. These are all the points she needs to hit to be amazing and she has done it.

      • travelingcat

Okay, now I need to embroider a pillow that says Lips, Hips, and Tits. You know, to go along with the other one I need to make that say Chin Up, Tits Out.

    • alyce1213

Well, she looks gorgeous, but the bottom of the coat is making me twitch. It really does look like lining — expensive lining, but lining.

    • Jackie4g

That coat is a stupid design from the waist down. What is the point of the satiny bottom? It won’t keep anyone warm. Lining is meant to allow for less fiber abrasion, so it slips over your clothes. Putting a satin weave on the outside means it will get rubs and worn spots in no time. That coat design makes no sense at all. Just dumb. Scarlett is fabulous under any circumstances, but that coat is the opposite of Coat Porn.

      Edited for spelling.

      • MRC210

That coat would be to die for if the bottom fabric was the same as the top.

      • kimmeister

I’m dying to make a joke out of “satiny bottom” . . .

        • demidaemon

Sounds like something they would put on a bottle of anal lubricant.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I will be dreaming about those delicious shoes tonight. Guaranteed.

    • jilly_d

I need those sunnies and that lipstick on my face, pronto.

    • myristica_fragrans

i don’t like that coat. it doesn’t know who it wants to be.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

She’s on my Celebrity Hate List so I’m not inclined to be objective; nonetheless, I appreciate that she looks pleased with her appearance.

    • Anna_Cecilia

She’s all, “Stand back, you oughtta know watcha gonna get in me: just a little touch of star quality.”

      WERQ that Eva Peron drag

      • kimmeister

She actually looked like Evita-era Madonna to me in the first shot!

    • sagecreek

She’s not one of my faves, but she is definitely rocking the 40s vibe, so credit where due, etc.

    • suzq

That hiddy frankencoat doesn’t belong on Scarlett.

    • Introspective

love the shoes and glasses. hate the coat. really hate it actually.

    • nannypoo

I hate the coat and I really hate her hair. It’s better than her usual bumpit look, but I never like her hair up off her forehead. It’s not flattering to her profile. Actually, I hate her lipstick too.

    • GorgeousThings

First time in my life I don’t like a Max Mara Coat. The top half is fabulous, the bottom is 70s tacky. I die for those sunglasses, though!

    • decormaven

Thank the heavens someone knows how to work it! Style on parade.

    • teensmom99

Are the uncles going to have to write an addendum to the book to add this look. Because this looks be more or do me to me.

    • boweryboy

For me it’s all about her attitude that’s carrying this look, because the overwhelming two toned beige-ness of it is killing me.

    • crash1212

Man. I’m hating this with all my heart and soul. The only thing I find remotely interesting are the shades. And that coat should be burned. With fire.

    • LeelaST

Coat/Lining – exactly! Not feeling this at all.

    • formerlyAnon

I LOVE the hair and the shoes. I am not sure, but the glasses may just make the hair.

Agree that it’s not as fab a coat as it coulda & shoulda been.

    • Peta Jones

I caught her on Letterman last night, the dress was gorgeous on her. She looked amazing, head to toe.

    • lundibleu

Ooh, she looks fab! Very pale though, or is that studio makeup?

    • KT

This is pretty fucking fabulous. I don’t really love the coat that much either, but she is making it her bitch. The gigantic sunglasses really complete the look.

    • MilaXX

I’m not a fan of the coat, but it somehow works as something to get pap’d in outside. On the show that blue dress looked all kinds of fab. As far as I’m concerned she had double header; Great outside look, and perfect chat show look.

    • Trickytrisha

      Squeee… love the shoes.

      Hate the coat.

    • Nonnah

I had to go look up Karen Walker Sunglasses. I didn’t know if it was truly a brand or just a Will & Grace reference.

      • Erica_Vuitton

    • River

Gorgeous woman, hair, makeup, SHOES…and I kinda like the weird coat.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Yep, Scarlett is selling this look big time-well done, ladystar!

    • Miranda

      She is so fab.

    • MinAgain

I’m not sold on the coat, but those are some seriously fierce shoes.

    • Kristin McNamara

Could’ve sworn that was Chloe Moretz in the first picture….

    • Truthiness2U

If only she was forced by the aethestic goddesses to have red hair all the time…because seriously, it always bugs me when I see her, because even here..she’s less than she could be. And there is a way I couldn’t care less that isn’t her natural hair colour, but talking about what is most flattering her, isn’t a way to make that happen.

Yes, she rocks the retro vibe, and especially here with parts of the hair and styling, but red hair would make her an otherworldly Gilda level, and not just ‘well, retro is better for her generally.’

    • murt

I don’t like that coat either……. also I don’t feel that the hem-length of the coat works with the hem-length of her skirt/dress.

    • Diego!

Stunning! You WERQ that Susan Hayward look Miss Scarlett!

    • BayTampaBay

She looks like Madonna when she was young in the first picture.

      • Julie Parr

I thought it was Madonna and even when I knew it wasn’t, continued to be struck by the resemblance.

    • Nancer

OOOH! Those shoes make me happy.

    • Wendy Todd

      Damn, that girl can pose!

    • amaranth16

I hear what you’re saying about the lining thing, but I still covet that coat.

    • Erica_Vuitton

The pose in the first pic is a touch too too for me but she’s got the “movie star” look down pat. Need those glasses! Karen Walker sunglasses OH POODLE!!!

    • ReadBarbara

I want those shoes (and the life in which I would have a legit place to wear them).

    • melanie0866

    • butterflysunita

Guess I’m the only one to think that coat is kind of fabulous. Love the shoes too.

    • GTrain

She looks great. LOVE the shoes

    • TerryMH

Selling it like the rent is due!

    • DuBey2

Oh, please please please let those Jimmy Choos appear on Zappos for 75% off – in my size – Quickly!!!
      Hey! A girl can dream.

    • demidaemon

    • Mia Moreno

Attitude is everything! Wow! She looks so happy!
