Sandra Bullock in Burberry Prorsum at the BAFTA LA 2014 Awards Season Tea Party

Posted on January 12, 2014

It’s awards season, which means we’re bound by law to feature Sandy every day. Possibly.

Burberry Prorsum Pre-Fall 2014 Collection

MAJOR points for sassiness and personality. It is, perhaps, just a little bit cringe-worthy in a “Pip-pip! Cheerio! Isn’t that what you guys say?” sort of way. Not that it wasn’t a good idea to wear an iconic British brand to a BAFTA party, but she’s only a few degrees shy of showing up wrapped in a Union Jack. What we’re saying is, this flirts a little bit with being too on point.

We wish she hadn’t slung the purse on her shoulder like that for pictures, though. And the addition of the necklaces doesn’t feel very … modern, somehow. We like the shirt better without the too-obvious attempt to dress it up. It’s chic and fun enough to stand on its own. That skirt really helps to bump it up, although that pleat doesn’t look so great. We suppose a straight up and down pencil skirt would have looked odd with a t-shirt, but it seems like you’d have to be model-sized to make this skirt work. And we might as well say that the pumps render a playful outfit a little too close to business-like. We think it needs more adventurous shoes than that. Basically, a really fun attempt that really suits her, but isn’t quite styled to its best effect. The accessories are all either too mature or too business-like.

Looove the t-shirt! I’d love to have it but it’s one of those $500 t-shirts, isn’t it?

(Now I’ll sit here and patiently wait for you to feature other celebs at the BAFTA Tea Party. *cough*BenedictCumberbatch*cough*)

    • WendyD

I’ll trade seeing Ben’s photos from the BAFTA Tea if it means we get to see him from the Golden Globes or the W After Party tonight!

      • Scimommy

I’m greedy. I want it ALL!

  • Got to agree that the necklaces are entirely superfluous in this case, and too formal looking on top of that. I’m also not sure where that hemline breaks on her is the best location.

    • fursa_saida

That length and scale of necklace just says 90s to me, which is not right at all when you take the skirt into consideration. (Also, what with the graphic on the shirt, it’s just a little too much going on.)

      • I’m all about loving juxtaposition of disparite elements, creating an interesting design tension. This just plain doesn’t work. And though clearly she was going for a fun hip chick look, that bag is wrong for teh look. I think I might have preferred an over-scaled, but simple clutch.

  • bellafigura1

Yes, agreed, the shoes and bag are degrading the chic here. The editorial photo does the styling right.

  • Joey Melliza

TOFTL – Too Old For This Look!

  • MilaXX

I really like this. My only quibbles are the necklaces feel a little too hipster and I wish she was wearing an edgier shoe.

  • SRQkitten

The look I’m not gonna comment on, beyond the fact I like her shoe choice better than the model’s.

What I do want to say is THANK YOU to the best gay uncles bitter kittens could ever hope to have for posting so early on a Sunday! What this awards season demands, our wonderful TLo rises to the occasion! (Hoping now for a double shot of Lupita, saw a dress on her that I l-o-v-e!)

    • ThesisMonkey

seconded! this is making up for the pain we endured over the uncles’ well-deserved vacation.

  • lexilexi

Cranky Sunday here. I pretty much dislike everything about this look. From the braid / headbanded hair to the silly necklaces to the absolutely wrong shoes. She may be a bit *old* for this outfit as well.

    • Spreecord

The styling takes the outfit from “Look at this cute outfit” to “Oh god, look what my mom’s doing to that cute outfit.”

  • DailyDose

A souvenir T shirt Tourists buy. “look, these are the places I have been to”

  • guest2visits

I like it alot – only small wish is that the pleat or fold in the skirt was as full as on the model. But then I guess it have to be custom-made.

  • littledamnhero

Not sure that I like it, but she looks happy and comfortable, which doesn’t happen often.

  • I see this as more brunch than afternoon tea. But if she wrapped those necklaces around her wrist I wouldn’t be mad.

    • decormaven

Yes, the pearls around the wrist- cute. Pearls around the neck near a t-shirt: mixed message. If edgier shoes had been chosen for this, I could almost get on board with the total look.

  • ailujailuj

love sandie. but this is a mess. or maybe it’s that the purse & necklace are so invasive I can’t see what’s supposed to be going on.

  • Spicytomato1

The look is cute in a high/low sort of way, although I’m sure that t-shirt doesn’t qualify as a “low.” But somehow it looks a bit too put together, which takes away from the carefree vibe the model pulls off. She looks very pretty and happy, though, which is nice.

  • SophieCollier

Her face is amaaaaazing. She looks radiant. I kinda dig the outfit. It’s fun but age appropriate.

  • AmeliaEve

I don’t think I get this. It might make more sense with a black leather jacket to pull it together.

  • luluransom

RZ featured this in a recent newsletter and I’ve been saving it all week. Love the model pic so much. Clearly not for mortals though, when even Sandy can’t quite pull it off. Styling all wrong, but there’re some fun ideas here.

  • jw_ny

Cute t-shirt…not right for the RC here tho, the way it’s all styled. I don’t really think any of the individual pieces work with the other…even the hair is off. That string of pearls, the grandmother bag are up there among the worst choices she made here.

Sandy…this t was the perfect opportunity for you to be the bad-ass chick we know you want to be…black leather skirt and kick-ass shoes!

  • deelup

The necklaces and purse are mall fashion show accessorizing. That said, I think if the colors of the accessories, shoes included, weren’t so matchy in color they could work.

  • Judy_S

This is great to have Sunday posts! Thank you!
I liked this. I was looking at the men and there seems to be a rash of wearing T-shirts to these parties. Benedict Cumberbatch wore one the previous evening with a velvet jacket, and at the BAFTA tea Steve McQueen wore one with a suit and Michael Fassbender with a leather jacket.
So I saw her t-shirt and thought it had some wit just in making her “one of the guys” as well as all the homage to British branding implied in the choice

  • quiltrx

That’s a weird skirt. It looks like chintz, and that pleat is just bizarre.
I love the black/silver necklace, though it seems I’m the only kitten that does (I don’t like the pearls, though). It has that look of (something I would say) “oh, this is my favorite vintage necklace, I got it at the flea market and I wear it ALL the time!”

  • Dan_In_NYC

This doesn’t quite come together for me. But I see where it’s going and like that place for Sandy.

  • formerlyAnon

No. (I’m not saying she’s aged out of this insouciance, because I think she’ll be able to be genuinely insouciant into old age.) BUT. There are Fashion People, on whom this would look like Fashion. Then, there are . . . the rest of us. Even with stylists and money galore, she looks like she’s on vacation and didn’t pack exactly right for the occasion and is improvising with what she packed and what she picked up on an afternoon doing destination shopping.

  • ThesisMonkey

totally agree about the necklaces. they really don’t work here. I’m all for a good high-low contrast, but the skirt is doing the work already.

  • Little_Olive

This outfit kinda makes me angry. I say no.

  • Evan

I don’t even want to think about how much that t-shirt probably costs.

  • cocohall

Did someone lose her luggage? This looks so thrown together at the last minute – like she asked her personal assistants and stylists all to contribute a piece to the ensemble so she wouldn’t have to appear nekkid on the RC. I love the t shirt and the skirt, but not together. The jewelry really more appropriate for tea with the Queen.

  • Janet B

Loving all of the parts, but not all together.

  • marlie

I LOVE the skirt. I think the pleats in the front just needed to be adjusted before she stepped in front of the cameras. I don’t like the t-shirt with this, but I get it. And yes, the necklaces were too much.

  • Trickytrisha

Great fabric on the skirt. Underwhelmed by the fold/pleat thingy, and the tee shirt. I mean… it’s a meh tee shirt. Love her hair and makeup. Boring shoes, bag, and jewelry. Pretty much an C grade for me.

  • PastryGoddess

And the next stop on the “suck it bitches I’m almost 50” Winter ’13/14 tour is a success. Next stop is LA, be prepared to bow down

  • A Shiny O’Connor

This look is SO Grace Adler.

  • LaSylphide

I wonder how much that t-shirt costs. Mine cost $5 for three.

  • Love the shirt, hate the necklaces, braid and shoes. I can see where she was going with a fun, daytime look but it’s just too confused.

  • velomango

Oh come on my fellow kittens – I very much feel there is entirely too much pickiness going on here. It’s a super cool look and I like it just as is (says the girl wearing linen trousers and suede brogues. I embrace my lesser status as an eternal minion-in-training).

  • SugarSnap108

Agree completely. I love the outfit, but would change everything about the styling. Needs funkier shoes, cute clutch and a cuff bracelet/no necklace.

  • nannypoo

The shoes and bag are just wrong but I like everything else, even the necklaces. I can’t tell if that’s a braid or a headband she’s wearing. If it’s a braid then I hate that too. Someone a few posts down suggested a black leather jacket. I like that idea. Her face looks great.

  • LeelaST

Not getting this look at all. Seems like she spilled something on the “real” top and pulled a tee out of her suitcase. Necklace, bag & shoes are a miss.

  • Kate4queen

Hand on heart I can say as a Brit that the only people I have ever heard say “Pip-pip! Cheerio! are Americans. I also think the T-shirt is a bit casual and crumpled looking.

  • @Biting Panda

The jewelry makes the whole outfit feel as if it were picked out for her and she just grabbed her own purse, while walking out the door.
Sure, it’s true, it was picked out for her, but I want the illusion. Also, she has People to hold her purse, it’s a red carpet, she’s not running to the Tube.

  • mdcoon127

Too mature or too business like? It was a tea party – and it is her business…she looks fine.

  • Pterodactyl111

The shoes are fine, but the necklaces I really don’t like.

  • kimmeister

I actually like the necklaces, the braid is the one thing that stands out to me as particularly wrong.

  • jangma

I like it, but the necklace looks like the jewelry I used to buy at Wet Seal.

  • GillianHolroyd

I like the concept but agree that the styling is off. I’d like to see her with her hair down, even flat-ironed.
