Rihanna in Altuzarra at the Roc Nation Pre-Grammy Brunch

Posted on January 28, 2014

While it’s true that Ri looks like she’s wearing a couple of tablecloths…

Rihanna attends the Roc Nation Pre-Grammy brunch in Los Angeles, California in an Altuzarra striped blouse and skirt paired with Manolo Blahnik sandals, and jewelry by Roseark, Jennifer Meyer, and Neil Lane.

Altuzarra ‘Chika’ Long-Sleeve Striped Blouse and Striped Tie-Slit Fold-Over Skirt

… she’s almost making them work. Is it her? Is it us?

We really like both pieces, but we question whether they really should be paired outside a lookbook picture or runway. And those shoes seem like a step too far. But whatever magic Ri’s able to create with her persona is coming close to making all those problems disappear. Bottom line: we don’t love this look put together like this, but if there’s one gal who can make it all work, it’s her.

I just CAN NOT with the long talon nails on anyone. Call me old fashioned, I don’t care.

      • siedhr

I agree. They’re UGLY and so unpractical.

        • SportifLateBoomer

True, they’re impractical… but it’s not like she’s washing dishes or gardening fixing her car like the rest of us mortals, She’s got it like that, with people do things for her so she doesn’t need hands that are functional!

          • CelandineM

Well she still has to use the restroom.

            • Tatiana Luján

              or text someone.

            • SportifLateBoomer

              You’re right, there is that…

          • siedhr

I see your point, but I don’t exactly work with my hands either and I have trouble when my nails are too long. Maybe it’s just me.

            • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

No – I can’t type when my nails get long.

            • siedhr

This and also punching holes through tights. Or snagging. Or accidentally scratching myself.

      • Janet B

My grandmother wore her nails long like Rihanna’s in the 1970′s.

      • Jacob Bowen

I’m just going to go ahead and say it….I am glad I’m gay because there is NO WAY I would let those talon nails near my nether region!

        • demidaemon

          Sing it, brother!

      • mrspotts66

        holy lee press-on nails. ick.
i’m sort of diggin’ the outfit, though.
        and her hair! nice.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

She isn’t making it work. She’s just keeping it from sucking.

    • andi56

These are not just ANY dishtowels! These come from Ireland, and are rather extraordinary linen dishtowels. I have two of them, in exactly these colors. They’re called paddock towels, and were first used in stables. [Insert inappropriate horse joke here.]

    • Vanessa Reyes

The top is ok but the skirt looks like an apron turned into a skirt. As if she just finished cooking for the Pre-Grammy’s brunch and realized she was on the guest list but didn’t bring anything to change into.

    • LJCdoc

      Nope, not working at all.

    • Jaeda Laurez

If she’d just worn a plain white or silver skirt…le sigh. I HATE that skirt, but I like the new-ish hair.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Hair and makeup are quite pretty — she looks very pretty here — but I can’t get past the fact that she is, in fact, wearing dish towels.

        • 1964edithgrove

          Dishtowels was my first thought…

          • oohsparkley!

My issues with the outfit aren’t with the fabric. I always think that just because a fabric has been used for dishtowels, shower curtains, sofa’s, curtains, etc. doesn’t mean it can’t be used in an outfit, when properly deployed. I just don’t think this skirt quite works with that blouse. I think the strings and slit are just a little too much. If I had been asked, I would have closed up the top with a few buttons and lowered the slit, still kept some lacing but without the long dangling strings. Then styled it with shorter red nails. It still could have been sexy for her but more subtle.

        • Evan

When does she not look pretty though? True dat to the dish towels lol

        • ailujailuj

her make up stopped me in my scrolling frenzy. stunning.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

This would ALMOST be OK for me if the skirt didn’t sport those ties that make it look rather shredded. It it were just a slit, perhaps not so high, and the skirt itself was a tad shorter, I’d feel much more love for it. And I’m sorry, but the tattoos (especially all over her right hand) just make me cry. It seems to me a henna artist could make a fortune doing temporary decorations for celebrities….all the “look”, none of the permanence, and no risk.

      • KinoEye

You mean that’s not henna? Wow. I thought her hand looked henna’d. But that must have been painful.

        • fursa_saida

I thought it was henna? I kind of still do? I guess I’ll have to wait for the next time pictures of her are going around and see if it’s still there.

      • Ginger

I love tattoos, even though I don’t have any myself. My soon-to-be 18 year old son has been dying to get a tattoo and was asking my opinion. I’m fine with it, but I insisted (even though it’s not my body) that there be nothing above the collar bone and nothing on the hands. Everything else is fair game.

      • Erica_Vuitton

The reason that hand looks not that great is she it done with small V shapes (a traditional tribal done with ink, a chisel and a hammer) and then had that covered with a henna design tattoo and then modified/covered THAT with the ivy design you see here and a darkly shaded cross on the inside of her wrist. It’s all that overlapping ink that makes it look messy.

    • LeelaST

Both pieces looks like Jewish prayer shawls with attached fringe (Tzitzit?). The shoes and hair are both too too – messy & complex.

      • andi56

The tzitzit is the fringed garment worn by observant Jews; the prayer shawl is the tallit (Hebrew for “cloak”), so it looks more like the tallit!

        • LeelaST

Thanks! I thought everyone knew “Tallit” so I didn’t specify, thought the fringe itself was “Tzizit.”

          • andi56

You are quite right! But the tzitzit also refers to the four-cornered garment observant men wear under their shirts to remind them of their obligations to G-d.

            • Jaeda Laurez

              The Bitter Kittens dropping knowledge in the comments- I love it; you never know what you’re going to learn :-}

            • andi56

The Bitter Kittens are a highly intelligent lot! That’s why I like it here. : ) We all learn form each other.

    • Blair Sylvester

Are a few buttons on the blouse to be used as buttons should be too much to ask? I feel like seeing somebody’s under boob tattoo should be a private moment

      • Beardslee

If only it were! Wouldn’t that be great?

    • SugarSnap108

That skirt is awkward as hell, but it looks better on her than the model. The shirt might be cute if a couple buttons were employed. To say something nice, her head looks pretty.

    • Faerie Nuff

I don’t love the outfit, but that one picture of her smile is adorable. She has such a great smile.

    • 3boysful

Do you think anyone actually eats at a pre-Grammys brunch? What do they serve–Tic-Tacs?

      • demidaemon

        RuPaul would approve.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I think she looks great, although she should have gone a size up in her lower towel.

    • livesarah

Everything looks long and straggly. The clothes, the hair… Her hair looks a lot better at a shorter length.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

I never realized how much ‘It’ that girl has until I saw her in ‘Battleship’…the movie only came to life when she was onscreen. That said, only she could pull off a look like this and although I’m a manicure fiend, the talons just take her straight to 8 Mile, IMO.

    • Imasewsure

Not loving the skirt, the hair, the shoes (with this outfit) and yet I’m still giving it tiny snaps. She just has that thing…

    • lundibleu

Meh. I don’t get it. She’s looking more alive and happy than she has for quite some time, which is great. The clothes though… they’re dishtowel material, the top could be ok but basically looks like an undone office blouse. That skirt is something else though… as it’s certainly not a skirt. Ugh.

    • Bexxx

I would like this in different color/fabric. Like bright, solid colors. The combination of the long weave and the high slit & fringe hanging from the skirt gives her a very islandy vibe which works really well for her. But maybe that just comes from all her Instagram pics in Barbados. Love that smile.

    • marlie

I love the blouse on her. It’s totally her, and she can pull it off. I like the skirt less, and I really hate the shoes. And I wish her makeup was amped up a bit.

    • stubbornthoughts

That skirt looks like she made an escape attempt from a hospital. Hospital chic, one might say.

    • Sylvia

The blouse is gorgeous. I’d prefer the skirt without the tie-fastenings, but she’s pulling off it despite the truly hideous length (stubbifying on anyone) and her skin looks luminous. Not a fan on the nails though, it looks like someone attacked them with tippex.

    • claudemtl777

I remember her from the SOS days, and how gorgeous i thought she was….Granted she’s still a good looking gal, but those tats have the same effect as tagging on a beautiful building…distracting without bringing anything interesting, and no matter what, any outfit, haircut, It is what you see first….

      • Nikko Viquiera

i will disagree and say that her tattoos take nothing away from her :) And some tagging on buildings are actually pretty :)

        • claudemtl777

graffiti can be nice…i said tagging, which never is… i feel like she got tagged by chris brown and its all kinds of ick…

          • NinjaCate

Are you really making the argument that she “defaced” her body like graffiti on a building? Oh my Lord… are your hands sore from all the pearl clutching?

    • DTLAFamilies

Face is pretty. That’s all I got.

    • CatherineRhodes

Sorry, but that skirt is just plain dumb. Looks like it got caught in the paper shredder at work.

    • butterflysunita

The outfit is ridiculous, but she looks gorgeous. Say what you will, she’s really a stunningly beautiful woman.

    • Nika E

This is fugly. I think im becoming desensitized to Rhianna. You know what I mean? It was like when she first came out u thought she was so gorgeous and she could do no wrong right? But now u see her so much that she starts to look weird and u start to wonder what all the hype is about? Thats me right now. Same thing happened with Kim K. She(Rhi and Kim)just looks tacky.

      • demidaemon

Well, I always thought KIm K. was tacky. I think Rihanna does some interesting things with fashion and, while she is sometimes overpraised for it, she often makes things that shouldn’t work work. She’s got model attitude, which helps.

        • Nika E

Yes Kim was/is always tacky style wise, I meant more on the beauty side. I used to think her face was perfect, that she was easily one of the most beautiful women ever. But because shes always in ur face(tv, mags, websites), I dunno I guess im kind of sick of looking at her. That’s the feeling I’m getting with Rhianna. But, yeah if u think she looks good that’s cool.Everybody got they something.

    • Janet B

I like the top on her a lot, but I don’t like the skirt at all.

    • guest2visits

Very pretty head shot. Not a fan of the graffiti. I’d love the blouse if it came with buttons.

      • SugarSnap108

It does have buttons. She’s just ignoring them.

        • demidaemon

          As she does.

        • guest2visits

Yup. I know; it’s in the pics. I’m just saying it might look nicer without the tattoo exposure (which looks like a lacy black bra that has slipped down) or the obligatory almost-boob-slip. She’s gorgeous. The tattoos, and the often tacky or excessive exposure just gets in the way. This really isn’t a moment where I think she’s THAT overexposed. But apart from the shoes it does look like she just threw something on as she stepped off the beach.

    • nowlo

If the skirt had been a normal pencil skirt and a few inches higher, I would have liked this a whole lot more. I’d even have forgiven the shoes, which are nice, but wrong for this outfit. Face and hair look beautiful, though.

    • SportifLateBoomer

Well I think she looks beautiful. The outfit is… idiosyncratic, but suits her. Gorgeous face and she seems to look more “present” and not stoned/bored as usual. I do think the hand tattoos are a bit too much and distracting.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

      No. God no.

    • bellafigura1

I like it a lot and I’d love it if the skirt were mini.

    • lobsterlen

I thought tea-towels instead of table cloth but yes Ri is making tea towels work. Not sure how but she is.

    • KinoEye

That skirt has the exact same pattern as my current dish towel. If it were larger and got shredded in the wash, I’d think she raided my laundry.

    • kmk05

PIRATE CHIC! I love it. She should own her own ship and wear the hat too.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

*Mismatched* tablecloths. To her credit, everything on her head is looking good enough to keep me from laughing.

    • SophieCollier

I don’t like the skirt at all, but the shirt is cute and she does wear it well. I like the long soft curls too. The whole look seems almost Polo Club. Her pale corpse hands are unfortunate, but lets blame the lighting.

    • Anna

She was making out with a hot pastry chef before the brunch started and got too close to the chocolate fondue fountain. She grabbed this from one of the bus boys.

    • MilaXX

Not crazy about the shoe, but I like the outfit. It is hers and hers alone.

    • cocohall

FRO – For Rihanna Only. She’s making this work better than the model. I love that this is how she interprets “Ladies Who Lunch.” She follows the rules and breaks them simultaneously. And that’s how you spell STYLE. Amateurs, do not head to your kitchen looking for dishtowels!

    • Evan

Still trying to figure out why she wasn’t at the Grammys. You’d think she would’ve gone since she was nominated twice.

    • Gatto Nero

I think this really suits her. Hard to imagine someone else pulling it off.

    • almondemy

It’s you. You gentlemen have a blind spot when it comes to Rihanna. Which is cool: I don;t judge you for it, but yes, she looks like she is wearing two tableclothes that are falling off, and she has cocker spaniel hair. And while I adore that she is smiling, her red eyeshadow is making my eye tweak.

    • Qitkat

She shouldn’t look this good in these chef aprons.

    • Claudia

      I don’t like her with long hair…

    • Claudia Fernandes

you must love her to think this works….

    • RussellH88

It kinda works in a “I just got back from the beach and I wrapped a towel around me” kind of way, but other than that it’s damn ass raggedy as hell.

    • carnush

Nope, not workin’ for me. Love the top though.

    • Diego!

Oh no… this looks like a stoned Daisy Duke. I can’t. Those shoes must be erased from Earth. They are hideous and awful.

    • Alyssa_T_Robot

she’s so gorgeous, i think her beauty is blinding us. i don’t love the outfit but overall i think she looks good… but she’d probably look good in almost anything. if you took away the weird strips on the skirt and the funky shoes this could probably be a work. oops, i mean, werq.

    • Tatiana Luján

I don’t like the look, nor do I think she’s even almost making it work. It’s a clear OUT in my book.

    • Folk Devil

The nails. The nails alone make this a huge NO.

    • Bernadette

From the waist up love! Especially the necklace and un-buttoned shirt. Skirt and shoes, no thank you, sir!

    • MoHub

      Not tablecloths; kitchen towels.

    • http://thatswhatthemoneyisfor.wordpress.com/ lizlemonglasses

It’s like she Scarlett O’Hara-ed my kitchen cafe curtains from Pottery Barn. Weird.

    • Lilyana_F

Yep, totally agree with you, guys. Something like the sum is greater than the parts.

    • elzatelzabelz

Neither, she is not making that horrible mess work.

    • NinjaCate

So basically “I do not like it therefore it is bad.”
I happen to love her sternum tattoo. Does that make it awesome?
Looks like we’re at an impasse!

      • claudemtl777

Hmmm, I suppose we are…I reckon we’ll both live. But really, this is a site where we express our opinion about what we find ugly and beautiful, no? Hair, frocks, make up,…am I wrong in thinking tats fall into the stuff we can critique?

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

Almost don’t recognize her with hair that looks human.
But yeah, this is fine. I think the shoes make it work; otherwise it would have been too casual.
