Pink in Johanna Johnson at the 2014 Grammy Awards

Posted on January 28, 2014

Total “good on paper” dress:

Pink attends the 2014 Grammy Awards held at The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California in a Johanna Johnson dress accessorized with Neil Lane jewelry.

The seaming’s great and adds a lot of visual and textural interest to what would otherwise be another boring Jessica Rabbit gown. But the problem with all that tricky seaming is that you’re giving yourself so many more ways to go wrong in front of cameras. There’s too much puckering and the satiny fabric doesn’t look very luxe under the lights. It’s high-impact and body-con in that totally Pink way, but it stops looking good after about 3 seconds. We would’ve loved to have seen that kind of seaming rendered in another color and a less shiny fabric.

Yes! Nailed it on the head – it bugged me that I was like, Wow, Pink looks great… and then by 5 minutes later when the camera landed on her again, I wasn’t in love anymore.

That said, she was AMAZING as a performer. J’adore. I now want to see her live.

    • leahpapa

She should slice this dress up into more aerial silks because THAT WAS COMPLETELY BADASS.

    • Jessica Freeman

I missed her the last time she was in my city, but a group of friends went and many months later they are still talking about how amazing it was.

    • I was not a huge fan of hers until I got a free ticket to see her in
November. She’s a total badass, and seems like a genuinely nice person. Really, I just
want to see her in some ringleader costumes all the time. Or some old Hollywood glam dresses… with far less seaming.

Met her in our hotel elevator in Chicago on Thanksgiving. She is SO sweet and was walking sans security with sunglasses and a hat trying to be invisible, but THAT HUSKY VOICE gives her away. I just casually said, “hi, I appreciate your music very much and I hope you have a great Thanksgiving” before I got off the elevator and she was so gracious.

THAT SAID. WOW, those arms.and those nice seams….only good thing I can say about the dress/

      • I had a similar experience! Met her in Trader Joe’s, and she was so, so gracious.

    • fursa_saida

The first concert I ever went to was Pink. Unfortunately, it was before she started doing the acrobatics, but my thirteen-year-old self still had a great time.

  • Diego!

Great hair and flawless make up. Sad and hideous dress. Honey, it’s a trash-edy. Throw it into the garbage basket.

  • Lori

This one hurts my soul. She deserves so much better than this shiny, wrinkly, cheap looking mess.

  • @Biting Panda

It can’t be easy for a woman with such an athletic build and character, to find a “pretty, girly” look, when that is what she is in the mood for. I’m sure she felt like a million bucks, so I hate to ding her, but I just don’t like this. To be fair, I don’t think I’d like it on almost anyone. Red satin is always going to look bedroom ready, in my opinion.

    • leahpapa

I would love to see her in something like J Law’s SAG sequined column.

      • Imagine a different colour of that Lupita Calvin Klein dress from the Critics Choice awards, Pink would have rocked that. For me I would have loved to see it in a hot pink for Pink, but I’m wacky that way. A lot of the Lupita silhouettes would work beautifully on Pink, they both have very athletic bodies. 🙂

    • I think Katy Perry’s metallic Giorgio Armani would look stunning on Pink. The halterneck would work really well for her.

  • MilaXX

meh, it’s just a standard dress. I don’t dislike it, but I wish she was in something better.

  • luludexter

I can’t help but have the urge to yank the thing up on her – she doesn’t really have the body for this kind of dress it feels like it’s slipping off her boobs and down her hips… it’s a shame because in a different dress she ‘s a knockout and her hair and make up here are great.

    • conniemd

It’s giving her titscrepancy because the left boob seems to be riding higher than the right. I want to yank up the dress on the right boob so they match.

  • Janet B

I can’t remember the last shiny dress I liked.

  • paintedfish

it looks like a safe Project Runway dress.

  • mjude

agree, she is such a bad ass she deserves better.

  • Sally Spannagle

It doesn’t do anything for her athletic build and it accentuates her smaller (by the music industry’s standards) chest, not creating curves.

  • cocohall

I love her to bits and pieces. She is freakishly talented. And brave (was anyone else feeling just a tiny bit scared during her performance?) But this dress is not her friend. ALthough she said on the RC that she felt like a princess in it. With Pink, the dress almost seems beside the point. She really is an athlete/dancer and I just want to see her body in motion.

  • Sarah

Yeah, if it was a smidge bigger and two different matte fabrics, I think it would be a win. The puckering is a shame. She has a great smile, though!

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Love her so much. This dress does nothing for her tight, little gymnast body. She looked better on stage when she put the big skirt over her bodysuit.

  • RussellH88

This is a bad Chloe Dao dress.

  • ScarlettHarlot

2 different matte blue shades would have looked nice with this design.

  • MannahattaMamma

wow. bad dress but I love how strong she is. She could snap most ladystars in two without even breaking a sweat.

  • This dress should be burned immediately, for giving poor Pink what looks to be a lower lumbar upper butt spine fabric tumour.

I know she has a perfectly functional upper butt and spine, from the performance in the other outfit.

There are other lumps, bumps and bubbles, but that one is the most disturbing to me.. 🙁

She looks so fabulous and happy, it is a shame this dress did not do her awesomeness proper justice.

    • Whoa. A lower lumbar upper butt spine fabric tumor sounds deadly!

(And hilarious. I literally laughed out loud and woke the dogs up from their hard-earned nap on my bed after they spent all day napping on my couch.)

This was a shame, she is so delightful and talented with a KILLA smile and SLAMMIN’ bod but all that shiny puckering………..

  • Sam Smith

Pink is awesome, but this dress is not working for her.

  • boweryboy

She always comes across as really butch to me so when I see her glammed up it feels incongruous. Plus, I hate satin everything. It never looks good.

    • Tatiana Luján

      I hate satin too.

  • Jessica Freeman

It’s a damn shame what happened to that dress.

  • kduffin7

Galliano would have got those seams right.

  • Rhonda Shore

This dress looked better on TV than it looks in still pictures.

  • MartyBellerMask

And the apparent static cling isn’t helping the look.

  • Anna

Not a fan of anything red satin at all, and I sympathize with her being athletic and wanting to feel feminine. I swam competitively throughout my teens and as if being a teenage girl wasn’t awkward enough, feeling like you had more muscular shoulders than the boys you were trying to attract and finding a prom dress at the same time was a nightmare.

Love that she always looks so happy and comfortable in her own skin no matter what she’s wearing on the red carpet though!

    • conniemd

She needs to become friends with Elie Saab if she wants to feel feminine. Having a tight dress showing a lot of skin doesn’t equal feminine. Some of his blue gowns from the spring 2014 collection would have looked great on her.

      • Anna

Good call on the Elie Saab. And although I don’t care for the actual dress, the style of the one she wore in the Just Give Me a Reason video looked great on her (and was super girly).

  • The seaming forms a Crotch Valentine. New at Hallmark.

  • quiltrx

I think this dress would have been great in the black/white era…the shiny vs. matte photographed really well in that format.
I still don’t mind this for her, it suits her style, but the dress itself could have been a lot more expensive-looking in other fabrics.

  • kmk05

It’s definitely the fabric that kills it. What is it with Hollywood stylists and satin, I thought they had realised it was a terrible idea?

  • Danielle

I really just want to go listen to M!ssundastood for the rest of the day now.

  • xmixiex

Can we pause for a second to observe how incredibly fit and strong homegirl is?! I’m not a pop fan but SHIT.

  • Cheryl

I think this might be the classic, Girl that is Not Your Dress. She is so fit and athletic, she needs something that emphasizes that. I don’t hate the dress, it’s just the wrong one for her. Maybe Katy Perry should have worn it?

  • gayle

She looks beautiful but she is so much more interesting and exciting than this dress. It is just too ordinary for her in my opinion.

    • BawlmerGurl

Well said! I could not agree more.

  • IraKi

ANOTHER FABRIC! How fabulous she would have looked had the been rendered in another fabric! This one is the fabric I imagine devil must be wearing. Actually, in my head, hell is made of satin.

  • Imasewsure

Keep the color and the basic style but ditch that satin fabric (forever please)… love love her platinum hair though

  • Mismarker

I love Pink’s fierceness but this looks a hot, ill-fitting mess. There was someone else who looked better in red that night: Miranda Lambert.

  • You know how flowers are structured to visually “guide” the insects towards the nectar? That’s pretty much what’s going on with this satin nightmare. “HERE is my vagina! RIGHT HERE, you guys!”

  • DesertDweller79

Oh, I didn’t realize the bottom was so shiny when I saw it originally. Yeah, TLo, you are right. It’s okay as it is. But, if it were not so shiny it would be a lot better.

  • Poeta Paz

It looked much better on TV. I even thought it was leather.

  • marlie

I’m not liking this at all. Too shiny, and I hate the way the bodice fits. It’s a shame, because I love this chick (and I just found out that she’s related to my boyfriend!).

    • formerlyAnon

      Goes-to-family-reunions level related?

      • marlie

If it were my family, yes, but not him; he’s not even particularly close to his first cousins.

  • Qitkat

I’ll second the vote for less shiny/different fabrics. The architectural lines of the dress are quite stunning, though a bit puckery (probably due to the satin).

  • The problem is that, although she’s got a slamming bod, she has absolutely NO waist. The stylist has tried to give her the illusion of curves with an optical illusion dress but IMO they never really work unless you have curves to start with. She should choose gowns which skim the waist but have all their interest and drama elsewhere – a funky statement choker, wide straps, halter necks, backless, train, leg split etc. At the moment she’s drawing all the attention to what is probably her worst feature…

  • Dagney

Paula Patton, Pink, and other athletic non-size 0 ladystars, you need to band together and find a designer/stylist team that will do right by you.

  • French_Swede

From the neck up she always seems so *severe* … I’d like to see her soften up a bit visually, to bring out the beauty of her facial bone structure.

    • she just doesn’t do soft. it’s not part of her persona

  • Love her, but really hate those molded cup bodices.

  • formerlyAnon

Definitely agree about the dress. Don’t like what the bust’s doing though. Higher, less cleavage, SOMEthing because she’s got a slamming body and I shouldn’t be distracted thinking “that bust looks . . . off.”

    Love her shoulders and arms.

  • save_the_hobbit

    Screw it, she looked FABULOUS.

  • Corsetmaker

Horrible fit! I hate cupped dresses, they never look right. The cups on that one are too small, the seam on the outside of the cup should be about an inch further back. And she does not suit a dress that emphasises her straight waist by drawing an hourglass on top of it! Unflattering.

    • formerlyAnon

It is SO wonderful to read an actual articulate opinion when all I can offer is “that bust looks . . . off.”

I love when people are competent and knowledgeable.

    • Gatto Nero

  • i really want to love this. i think the design and color are perfect for her, but it needs to be executed and fit to perfection. that button detail on the back could have been beautiful, but the way it pouches out is just wrong. also not liking the shiny makeup between the boobs. it’s giving me weightlifter with sweat running down his chest

  • guest2visits

Dress just isn’t doing her justice; having seen her in every possible contortion on stage in almost nothing – Pink has a body that should be looking much more together than this dated prom gown. I don’t like the fit, the cheapy looking fabric, the color …. looks like something grabbed off the rack in a less expensive dept store.

  • Maggie Smith

Pink has a fantastic shape. I’ve always admired how her fit look sets her apart. This dress is made for someone with more curve in their hips. It’s not that she can’t achieve that look. But she needs more structure under that dress extending past her hips for it to work.

  • From the waist down that dress looks very thirties, but it would have been in a different color then. Its color and bustier top make it not work for me.

  • Gatto Nero

    The shiny hurts my eyes.

  • cowper

If you read too quickly, it looks like “Pink attends the Grammys in a dress held together by Staples.”

  • Fannie Wolston

Wow those forearms are fierce, she looks great!

  • MmmmmmmmK

I’m not loving the Valkyrie boobs. If this had been a rich blue or green in a softer material with the seams flattened and outlined in a contrasting color, it could have been spectacular.

It doesn’t really matter. I LOVE her, and her personality dictates that she can wear whatever she wants to.

  • allcapsERINN

    Leave Kiefer Sutherland alone!

  • Also, it makes her breasts seem like afterthoughts.
