Miu Miu Spring 2014 Ad Campaign

Posted on January 15, 2014

We’ll just let Mr. Press Release have the floor for a second.

“Hollywood’s brightest new stars take on the many facets of the Miu Miu femininity in a series of portraits by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.

Elle Fanning (Somewhere, Super 8), Bella Heathcote (Dark Shadows), Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave) and Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Macy May Marlene) reinterpret the Spring/Summer 2014 collection – a play on classic archetypes of fashion – through their individual style language.”

Well said, Mr. Press Release. You may sit now.

We had reservations about Lupita doing these ads, believe it or not. It’s true that she rocked the shit out of a very hard-to-wear Miu Miu dress a little while back, but there’s Miu Miu out in the real world and then there’s the advertising version of the brand, which tends to go for a very quirky (to the point of being awkward sometimes) look. When we saw the first picture of her, we figured all our fears came true. It’s an awful look for her. Thankfully, every other shot of her is stunning. Euro-chic looks fantastic on her but they have to keep her away from the ABBA costumes the brand sometimes produces.

As for the other ladies, they all look good too. They’re not equal to Lupita in the modeling department but they’re well styled.

That first one of Lupita is ridiculous, and not in a good way. The rest of the ad campaign is fine (though I’m not really partial to Miu Miu), but why on Earth are all of the girls’ bodies weirdly twisted and contorted in half of the pictures?

    • PlethoraofBooks

      Because modeling, darling MODELING

      • marlie

They did some seriously bad photochopping with Elle’s leg in her second picture.

        • gabbilevy

Nah, the photographer is on some kind of distortion-inducing crack. These are awful images, plus look at how many hands and feet are unnecessarily cut off. I keep thinking: These poor girls with their amputated fingers and toes! Why would Miu Miu require such extremes from their models!? Terrible.

      • roverrun

It’s the Tyra Banks ANTM school of broken doll posing.

        • demidaemon

          You’ve got it!

    • Anna_Cecilia

Totally. Why are there so many with them off to the side? I was confused in the last one of Elle Fanning with the vast expanse of floor and wall, is it for Benjamin Moore paints or is it supposed to be a handbag shot?

      • Introspective

i kept wondering if something was off with my safari window. i kept trying to move it over to see if I was cutting off the rest of their faces/bodies.

alas, no. the miu miu photoshop hacks already did the chopping for me.

      • nyazgirl

It’s classic Photography 101 “Rule of Thirds”. And yes, they overemploy the technique a bit.
But that first pic of Elle Fanning is EVERYTHING!!! *swoon*

        • Anna_Cecilia

nyazgirl & Introspective: I think it may be my browser as well. When I first saw it, Elle was cut off completely (I could barely see her shoulder and arm holding the bag). Now she’s appeared rendering my initial comment nearly useless as the photo makes more sense now LOL, oh well.

Still don’t get the weird contorted poses though, and I’m with you on the first pic of Elle.

    • FancyPhilly

I totally agree about the first Lupita one. I’m getting a cowgirl vibe from it, though if you break down the pieces there is nothing “cowgirl” up there. Yet, I feel like in the next shot she must be saying “yee haw!”

    • Someone needs to hack the whole internet and remove that first Lupita picture from existence. And buy all magazines with that picture and burn them. Lupita should not be remembered that way.

    • Nicholas

Now that you mention it, it does look like a shoot you would only do to promote the upcoming season of American Horror Story.

    • ThesisMonkey

I’m never a fan of the “please don’t hit me again” pose Elle is sporting.

    • Zaftiguana

“why on Earth are all of the girls’ bodies weirdly twisted and contorted in half of the pictures?”

RIGHT?!? It’s really kind of creepy.

    • dtxtan

Really? How does it look bad when she’s just sitting on chairs? I’m not a fan of the clothes, but they’re not the worst I’ve seen in a fashion ad. Plus, it’s really hard for Lupita to look bad.

  • Well if anyone is going to rock a bedazzled and tasselled bustier, it is gonna be Lupita. 😉

  • mjude

    that was fun

  • Nicholas

Nyong’o was also flawless on Kimmel last night, in case anyone missed it.

    • Did you see the Dazed and Confused cover with Lupita on it? A.M.A.Zing.

      • Deac82

That Prada looked luminous on her. Make-up was pretty awesome too!

    • MilaXX

I did miss it, but I think ABC puts the eps on their website.

      • Nicholas

They upload their interviews to YouTube under the username jimmykimmellive.

  • Nancer

Bella is perfect for this brand.

  • SewingSiren

Really all three of them are perfect clients and models for Miu Miu. I don’t like the pictures with the bag front and center, too spokes modelish. But other than that. great.

  • MilaXX

The first shot is a bit much, but Lupita owns those other 3 shots.

  • teensmom99

Lupita looks good because she can make anything look good but I don’t think the clothes do her justice. Elle is in her element (ellement?). I can see why Bella would rock a Miu Miu coat but I think none of this is great on her. That’s all I got. Sorry, Liz–just kind of neutral on your look.

  • @Biting Panda

Not my own style, but easily enjoyable and imaginable on just the right twenty-something year old. Very, very fun.

  • flamingoNW

Elle Fanning comes pretty close to giving Lupita a run for her money,

  • Sobaika

Lupita’s much too elegant for the brand, and I find it strange that she’s in the same group as someone quite literally half her age. But I’m thrilled to see her doing well.

    • sojourneryouth

I agree. Can’t hate, because any exposure of her gorgeousness is a good thing for her and for women of color in general, but she is in no way a good fit for this tacky brand. Those shoes belong in a rave in 1993, or possibly on a Spice Girl in 1996, and absolutely nowhere else!

  • JasmineAM

Excuse my language, but why the fuck would you hire these girls, only to put literally half of their faces (and Miss Olsen is apparently headless) in the ads?

  • Charles

The styling/overall effect veer uncomfortably into Lolita territory in some of the photos. And some of it is just plain hiddy.

    • jabes

I find the first photo of Elle Fanning particularly disturbing. It would be so much better if she were looking at the camera.

      • Charles

Too true. Olsen and Heathcote have the same issue because they have a similar youthful look to Fanning and the styling reads young already so if it’s not intentional, it certainly turned out that way.

  • ailujailuj

my sister took her new camera to girl scout camp – her photos turned out like that too.

ETA: although… the lighting and colors are incredibly seductive. gorgeous.

  • I hope Miss Fanning asked to take all these clothes home with her. So much better than some of the stuff she usually wears. And the hair! keep this stylist. I love Lupita in the bright tights and chunky shoes, but the rest isn’t really speaking to me.

  • SassieCassy

the second picture of lupita is TO DIE

  • formerlyAnon

Bella Heathcote is the one with “the look” for these.

Definitely going to pass on those tights/stockings this time around, though.

    • demidaemon

Yeah, I agree. I think they actually take over every look and distract from the clothes. Are they Miu Miu branded as well? At least then I could understand the need to feature them in every shot.

  • Danielle

  • boweryboy

Yes to the ladies. They all look stunning.

No to the clothes, except for that gorgeous suede jacket Lupita is wearing.

Hell to the no to the shoes.

  • Jaeda Laurez

That first shot of Lupita is doing entirely too much- the styling is terrible (that top! for why?) – but thankfully, everything else came together well.
The shoes/stockings dresses is all very reminiscent of The Pointer Sisters in the 70’s for me.

  • Jackie4g

Love the sleeve button and tab detail, loved back when Jean Muir did it in the 70s. How do you pronounce Miu Miu? Like my, my, or meeyou meeyou, or what, please?

    • I think it is Meeyou Meeyou, but I wouldn’t swear to it!

      • It could also be like a French cat talks: miau miau.

    • ailujailuj

I like Jessi’s version for us BKs!
but my friend who “does shows” pronounces it like Myou Myou (less on the ‘eee’)

  • KinoEye

Gosh, is there anything Lupita can’t do? Extremely intelligent, great actress, fantastic model… the list goes on. That said, that first shot is HORRIBLE. Though I’m not entirely sure that can be blamed on her. Someone selected this awkward photo from dozens of others, undoubtedly. And as a few of the other BKs mentioned, the photo editing here is amateur hour. Meh.

  • CatherineRhodes

Such a crazy disconnect between Lupita’s gut-wrenching role in “12 Years a Slave” and her real-life persona as a Mui Mui model.

  • Imasewsure

Gawd I wish they would just hire actual models for these shoots

  • Elle Fanning should replace her makeup people with whoever made her up here.

  • stubbornthoughts

Lupita and Elle seem all wrong for this brand, especially with Elle’s cutesy curly-hair styling. Bella and Elizabeth seem like a fit.

  • Sarah

    Abba costumes, HA!

  • Susan Velazquez

This is a wrong fit for Lupita although the shot with the red coat is stunning. I think Miu Miu gave her the worst styling (ugh that first pic!).

  • Sam Smith

Elle should just wear that entire first outfit (or at least the dress) somewhere soon.

    • semirose

Agreed. Although I actually adore the yellow tights with it too.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

That suede jacket in the second shot doesn’t look like it belongs with the rest of this. (Actually, it belongs in my closet.)

  • Little_Olive

    It’s Elle’s game.

  • Anne

I love that Lupita has a different expression on her face in every picture. Take note, everybody else.

  • zenobar

…..Aaaand just like that, I realized I’m officially Of A Certain Age.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I know that feeling. Now, we just have to work so that we can emulate our goddess, Queen Helen

  • butterflysunita

All these women are lovely but Lupita blows them away in terms of taking striking photos. I agree that Lupita is not right for the brand but she really looks amazing in anything.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

Lupita hasn’t mastered the ‘plains of her face’ yet (thank you someone off one of Tyra’s ‘judging’ panels).

  • Chris

Elizabeth Olsen looks like she is going to crawl out of a TV and murder me. Lupita Nyong’o is stunning.

  • hmatz

Lupita gives me life! I la-la-love her!!

  • Carleenml

Red, white, and blue as a fashion choice always makes me shudder. Bleh.

  • GeoDiva

No No to Miu Miu, Is there a petition to free Lupita from them?

  • Trickytrisha

Very off putting campaign, IMO. Poorly shot… I mean, why cut off the top of each woman’s head in nearly all the pics? Is it more important to include your weird wall, floors and doors than the actually model? Overall, it’s claustrophobic.

  • “ABBA Costumes” or Erasure ABBA-esque costumes?

  • Qitkat

There is not a single one of these that doesn’t look awkward as hell. Atrocious posing.

  • This was like a scrolldown-sigh-of-relief. That first image is heinous. I still don’t think it’s great fit between brand and actress, but she doesn’t look bad in any of the photos (except the first). The three white chicks look ridic. “I’m so exhausted posing in these bazillion dollar outfits. Also, my legs are broken.”

  • kimmeister

I particularly dislike the choker Lupita has on in the first shot. It’s reminiscent of those Burmese neck rings.

    • demidaemon

I agree. That first shot is way too on-point Africanized, which, seems to me, kind of insulting.

  • joything

Whenever the model(s) are sitting down while displaying OTT shoes, I interpret the message as, “I cannot stand, let alone walk in these shoes.”

  • ThaliaMenninger

Broken dollies. Not real live girls. I find this abhorrent and objectified.

  • guest2visits

Apart from the 1st pic, Lupita looked fantastic. I really liked Elle’s too. Ok now I want a patent leather bag.

  • jspark

Was the camera blurry on the left side or something?

  • shelley514

Love that red coat and purple tights on Lupita.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I’m pleasanty surprised to see how well miss Bella embodies the Miu Miu aesthetic, I could’ve never predicted it.
