Mindy Kaling in Badgley Mischka at ELLE’s Women in Television Celebration

Posted on January 24, 2014

It’s funny. Lorenzo said she never looked better and Tom could not have disagreed more.

Mindy Kaling attends ELLE’s Annual Women in Television Celebration in West Hollywood, California in a Badgley Mischka embellished chiffon dress.

Badgley Mischka Embellished Chiffon Gown

Having said that, Tom doesn’t hate it and Lorenzo was kind of making a backhanded compliment, since he’s not thrilled with it either. We’re both in agreement on one thing: it should be a gown. It looks so much better with the skirt to the floor. You cut it off and this starts looking like the first layer of a boudoir ensemble.  It’s not terrible, but all the drama went out of it when it turned into a cocktail dress. We were actually a little surprised this was a Badgley Mischka, since it’s so low-key. They trade in big and glamorous most of the time. This was – again, as a gown, mind you – chic and simple, with an interesting detail in the straps. She would’ve rocked this at gown length, although it might’ve been too much for this event.

I agree that it looks better as a gown. Still, overall I like it–she looks pretty.

    • sugarkane105

Cut short, it looks like the kind of dress every girl at my high school wore to the homecoming dance.

    • Jaeda Laurez

It’s kind of boring, for a Badgley Mischka, although i appreciate the straps large enough to accommodate an actual bra. I don’t mind the length, I mind the boring shoes, and the boring hair. That’s basically how I wear it when I’m drying off from the shower and I don’t want my hair getting wet from my shoulders. .

    • OMM4

I’m not a fan– I think where the waist sits on her is unflattering. Also, I think that lipstick is a little garish. But, the straps are really interesting and her hair is cute. Her style is always such a mixed bag, erring on the side of no, for me.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

It’s just all so BASIC. She is so beautiful, she would look so amazing in some bright jewel tones to offset her hair and eyes. I think she looked gorgeous at last year’s Emmys in that plum color.

      • Madam Von Sassypants

EXACTLY! I adore all the color she wears on her show. Granted, I know she is not her character, but they make so much more of a statement than this mall-bought junior prom ensemble does.

        • lrober03

Especially the waistband! It looks so so cheap

    • TRSTL

The dress was much better long but I am not crazy about that lip color on her either. Does it seem a little too pink (or something?) for her?

      • MilaXX

I think it’s more a case of bad foundation. This happens with darker skin tones. Sometimes it’s the minerals in the formula which oxidize and thus end up looking orange, sometimes it’s because it’s a yellow undertone in the formula when it needs to be a blue undertone. Which ever the case the lip doesn’t work because its fighting a bad foundation. It also looks like they used a orange or yellow toned blushed which only emphasized the orange-ness of the foundation.

      • demidaemon

I agree with MilaXX in that I am just not onboard with the entire make-up situation here. Something is off and it is not flattering her beautiful features in any way.

    • Nancer

I think this is a proportion issue. She is a bit short waisted, so this dress is probably hitting her right where it should. But because the decolletage is wide and low, it visually widens her upper half. I think this is really pretty, and she looks nice, but a few tweaks would have helped here. I also disagree with TLO (which doesn’t happen often). This same dress in a gown would have been less flattering.

      • Laura Abrahamsen

Thank you for articulating the reaction I didn’t have the right words for.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Totes agree. And I think the waistband/belt thing, because it’s not symmetrical, winds up looking a wee bit sloppy.

      • kimmeister

I agree with you too, in your disagreement. This dress in a gown would have just emphasized her short waistedness, which I would hazard is the reason she shortened it so she would look like boobs on top of super long legs with nothing in between (which is how it would have looked).

    • jbontrager78

I like the dress, but hate the lipstick.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

It was smart to take up the hem, but the shoulders (on the dress) make it look sloppy.

    • marlie

I prefer this dress as a gown, but I think it’s also been hemmed to a slightly awkward length on her. Also, it looks a little… generic. But Mindy’s hair and makeup are pretty, except for the slightly-too-bright lipstick.

    • LiliLynch

I agree that it’s much better as a gown, and I can’t with that lipstick. She is so beautiful and it’s such a shame that many of her fashion choices are close but not quite! Speaking of help with her fashion choices, she tweeted earlier today that she wants someone to find her some “stylish outfits you can wear with flats to work.” TLo, please heed her call, she needs you!

    • In_Stitches

Not loving the lisa-frank inspired make-up job and the dress is just an ‘eh’. No real statement jewelry pieces and the shoes are visually non-entities…the dress would need to be a wow to pull off that kind of accessorizing and it sure ain’t.

    • Lilah

I think if it were a gown, it would have totally overwhelmed her. I like it.

    • ailujailuj

take the scissors away from her and burn those shoes.

    • Sarah

As a person who usually doesn’t wear bright colors, I am sad when a person who DOES gives over to black. I would prefer to see her in plum or teal or yellow or floral or anything but a ho-hum kinda boring awkwardly hemmed lookin-lika-sundress-dress.

    • jilly_d

Her lipstick and skin tone are fighting – lipstick is winning, unfortunately. A little more berry and less bubblegum next time, plz, Mindy.

    • KinoEye

She appears to be a petite lady, so I think taking up the hem was the right idea. I think I’d like it better if it hit just below the knee. Not a fan of the shoes (yawn) or lipstick (too bright). Love her though, and want to see her looking her absolute best.

    • MilaXX

Her makeup is horrible. Whoever did it used the wrong foundation and she’s looking a little orange. The dress is nice, but would have worked better as a gown. It should be noted that she does seem to have found the shape that works for her. This and her SAG award dress were great improvements. Those shoes are hideous. I wish short gals would stop with the platform pumps. They don’t make you look taller, they make your feet look like stumpy hooves. Her hair looks great.

      • mjude

thank you! STUMPY HOOVES sounds like a bad romance :)

      • Danielle

I loathe that lip color. Put down the OCC Lip Tar and walk away!

    • VioletFem

This is pretty, but she has definitely looked better than this. I’m not convinced the longer length would have looked good on her because she a such a petite lady. Fancier shoes might have upgraded this look a bit more.

    • DTLAFamilies

Shorter would work too, like right at the knee. But hair and makeup are very pretty. She mostly looks good.

    • lalahartma

      She does look good!

    • Latin Buddy

Have to admit, and I hate that it’s a burden unfairly thrust on her…but I was disappointed she let the magazine editor’s get away with what they did. She had an opportunity to really say, this is not ok to make me stand out because the color of my skin…but she just glossed it over, said it’s a great pic. Again, I know it’s unfair for me to expect her to take such a stand, especially when she had no control over it, but I felt it was a missed opportunity.

      • scoobynacks

I dunno. On one hand I get the complaint, but I thought her cover was stunning.

        • MilaXX

That’s the dilemma. These are after all fashion mags, so the covers are never not going to be pretty, However the fact that curvier gals are consistently treated differently still bugs. For me this was only compounded by the fact that she was also the only WOC in a 4 cover spread and her cover was rendered in gray scale.

        • Imasewsure

I get the issues too but I thought she looked amazing in that shot

    • lunchcoma

Definitely needs to be a gown. Simple is fine, but this particular kind of simple reminds me of the kind of little black dress that a woman who doesn’t actually enjoy dressing up might have in the back of her closet, just in case.

    • Adrianna Grężak

Something about it (the fit?) reads cheap to me

    • Lilyana_F

I can say facewise she’s never looked better.

    • Sobaika

She looks pretty cute except for that lipstick. That is a NO.

    • sagecreek

      I think she looks lovely.

And at the risk of opening up this particular snakepit once again, I think she’s everything that Lena Dunham claims to be but isn’t. MK is just very much herself and very non-apologetic, and I love her for it.

    • paginatrix

She’s one of the most adorable girls ever, but she should throw that lipstick away.

    • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I had a bus driver named Mavis when I was in elementary school who wore lipstick that shade. I thought she was really glamorous.

    • Imasewsure

Floor length for sure but I think she looks fantastic (even with the neon lipstick)

    • http://TheDoseofReality.com/ The Dose of Reality

She’s wearing my Memaw’s shade of lipstick. :(

      • Pennymac

        My Mom-Mom’s. too.

    • CPK1

no no no on the lippy. The shoulder looks good on her, but that’s all i like.

    • Violentcello

It’s boring, but we’ve seen her in a lot worse. I like the bubble-gum lips, but they belong with a different dress.

    • Gatto Nero

Yes, this works better as a gown. The bright pink lip isn’t working with her skin tone, partly because there’s too much yellow/orange in her makeup.

    • Verascity

      She looks great, IMO.

    • greymain

” first layer of a boudoir ensemble. ” …..absolutely…and that lip color really needs to GO AWAY…..

    • cocohall

Goth Bridesmaid. Although I would be beyond thrilled to have Ms. Kaling as a bridesmaid if I could turn the clock back.

    • guest2visits

Can’t really disagree with the lip-color. It makes the black dress feel brighter, less leaning toward dour. Full length would’ve helped define it as special. Love the hair flip/knot too, pretty!

    • Wooley

I think the elements of this look are good conceptually, but somehow it still looks drab. All I can say is it just needs more “oomph”.

    • ashtangajunkie

      Girl, that’s not anyone’s lipstick.

      • ChristyDee1

My first reaction, that color definitely is not for her.

    • willworktomorrow

I’m going to go against the grain and say I LOVE the lip color on her. Gorgeous with her skin and hair.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

Either that’s a discoloration on the front, or we can see her lacy intimate body girdle.

    • quiltrx

Taking it this length is somehow really aging. I do like the bodice details.

    • Monabel

Dear uncles, how can you be silent about that lipstick?

    • MM4321

Sorry uncles, I like it better short!

    • jjjoy

the shorter length cheapens the look. i’m pretty sure you can find this dress at Charlotte Russe.

    • murt

her makeup is much improved here.

    • gefeylich

I think she [finally] looks great. A long version would have swamped her. She looks a bit retro with all that black chiffon, and for once her dress looks comfortable and pretty. I dunno; I like it.

    • Pterodactyl111

Her make-up looks fantastic though. I love that lip color.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

the shiny face bugs. looks sweaty to me. love the lip color.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Yeah, it looks a whole lot better all the way to the floor. It just messes with the proportions. But it’s ok. I don’t hate it.

      • conniemd

Part of the messing with proportions is the empire waist. It looks more out of proportion with the shorter skirt.

    • Sally Spannagle

I like the neckline detail, but floor length or short this gown overall looks like something I could find at David’s Bridal

    • AceOn6

Short waisted gals need to be very careful about belts in general. In addition to the length, the belt is throwing this off.

    • heartbot

Floor-length with a better fit in the boobs, she would have nailed it.

    • Tatiana Luján

I think that dress is ugly and looks cheap.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

Can we say something horrible about her lipstick now? Please?

    • Daktari100

This girl always looks so put together and so, well, pretty, to me that I have trouble finding fault in her look.

    • Guest

This girl always looks so put together and so, well, pretty to me that I have trouble finding fault in her look. After taking a second look at the model in the longer version, however, I do see your point. Standards must be set pretty high for her if that’s the biggest criticism we can find. I just think she’s one of those women who knows how to put a look together, alsmost as if by instinct. She wears clothes well, and that’s not always easy for someone who isn’t Hollywood thin. Mad respect for that!
