Miley Cyrus in Saint Laurent on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”

Posted on January 31, 2014

Hats off to her style team, because we don’t think anyone could’ve predicted her turn toward Country Chic after spending the last year doing a “Black people totally love me!” style turn.

Miley Cyrus makes an appearance on “the Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in Saint Laurent.

Saint Laurent Blue Chambray Shirt | Saint LaurentJane’ Ankle Strap Leather Sandal | Saint Laurent Original Low Waisted Skinny Jean

That’s just a fabulously chic and minimal little look. A great way to “get back to her roots” while still being forward-looking. Because back when she was way more a part of the country world than she is now (from birth to about 2 years ago) she never dressed this well or this on point. The chain belt was the perfect touch. And we’re surprised to find ourselves loving those shoes, since we’re desperately tired of seeing naked shoes on starlets. Must be the blue that’s making us love them.

Very smart. Totally reads “off duty.”
(As if anyone in the history of the world has been “off duty” while sitting in that chair…)
Again, smart — in both senses of the word.

    • She’s dressed exactly the same as I am right now.

      • MoHub

But I bet you didn’t pay nearly as much as she did.

  • @Biting Panda

So, Ratchet Hee Haw is a (semi)permanent thing now? Sigh. Ok. But if she makes Southern Women look like tacky shit, I’m going after that ass.

  • sugarkane105

Denim on denim, a la Justin and Britney.

    • kimmeister

Also a la Jay Leno in every single prerecorded skit he does.

      • ballerinawithagun

Yes, we just thought she was channeling Jay.

    • YoungSally

And the Sears catalog in the mid-late 70s

  • newleaf1

Looks good but just annoys the shit out of me now.

    • I think she needs to vanish for a bit, a’la Hathaway.

Then maybe we can go back to being ok with her and not wanting to duct tape her tongue inside her mouth where it should live.. 🙂

  • Trent

Saw her last night, and she was not only cute and chic, but the most completely confident and at-ease 21-year-old I’ve seen in a long time. She handled that appearance better than actresses and singers 10 years her senior, if not more. (Also, she said that she wore all denim as a nod to Jay Leno’s famous all-denim off-duty wardrobe.)

    • kimmeister

Should have read your post first!

  • MilaXX

She’s on my celebrity hate list, but I have to admit this is a good look and this looks closer to who she really is.

  • imspinningaround

You know what I love about this? It’s totally doable and relatable. I have all these things in my closet right now (except for the shoes, which I would swap for white Chucks).

    • Pterodactyl111

See, I think the jean on jean needs the fancy shoes to bring it up to a stylish level. Otherwise it would be pretty icky.

  • Pterodactyl111

Maybe it’s the fact that they’re paired with jeans and a jean shirt rather than a boring old cocktail dress.

    • Imasewsure

Absolutely… With a dress they just look boring and unfinished. Great look with skinny jeans! Who knew….

  • alyce1213

Oh look, chambray and denim. Nothing to get excited about. IMO, denim on denim is nasty, not chic, and boy are those the wrong shoes.
    Again with the tongue.

    • Pennymac

      Miley non-fan ticked up!

    • demidaemon

I disagree. I like the tone on tone here. But I won’t downvote you, because I respect your opinion!

      • alyce1213

As I respect yours. Downvote the downvotes.

  • lobsterlen

Miley does look very good here. I just listened to her sing Jolene and Lilac Wine. I liked her renditions of both songs. The fact I enjoyed her singing those songs troubled me. The girl should be doing country music. If that was her more or less singing those songs without much doctoring of the recording …. Miley could give Taylor a real run for her money.

    • Bridget Smith

I am basically not paying any attention to her or her music until she starts doing more like that. Her bittersweet, rough-voiced rendition of “Lilac Wine” is GORGEOUS. She wouldn’t be nearly as popular, though.

    • manina

As far as I am concerned she can wear whatever she wants as long as she keeps singing. The girl can sing. Love her look in denim, love the shoes, the hair and the make up.

    • merciblahblah

I LOVE her version of Jolene – she really CAN sing, and IMHO should be doing country/rock and blues all the time, along the lines of Bonnie Raitt or even Susan Tedeschi, though I don’t think she has QUITE the pipes for Tedeschi. Still – even though this past year she has been waaay too over-exposed – literally and figuratively, I don’t hate her. I think she is just a kid being a kid, albeit a kid with a shit-ton of money. She definitely doesn’t bug me the way T-Swift (who tops my irrational hate list) does.

      • ccinnc

I just youtube’d Jolene (“Backyard Sessions”). Not a big country music fan, but … chills. Better than DP’s version IMHO. Buying. Thanks! Oh, and LOVE those shoes.

      • GorgeousThings

I read in the Wall Street Journal that she’s been taking voice lessons, to try to make sure she doesn’t hurt herself vocally. I’m getting more impressed with Ms. Miley these days. I hope she keeps it up.

and I hope she ditches the whole twerking thing, but that’s the mom in me talking

  • sagecreek

Love the outfit, want to rip her tongue right out of her head.

  • grasso

I wish the pants had been a skosh darker, I’m a big denim on denim fan but it needs to be the right denim (or chambray)

  • stephkat

    Jeans + shirt = roughly $1,000.

Wow. Didn’t even look up the shoes.

    • Jackie4g

She not paying for that stuff, is she? People can do an approximation

      • Lori

People can do an approximation, but 99% of them shouldn’t. On normal people this look is basically a Texas tuxedo, and is almost always a fashion disaster.

  • xmixiex

Can’t stand her, she looks great. Bam.

  • It would give me hives to call chambray and denim chic, but it’s recognizably clothing, not appropriating anything from anybody and covers the relevant parts so I guess here we are at most improved. Yay?

  • ashtangajunkie

She’s cute. Country chic suits her – I can’t hate.

  • Belvane

If there is anything more ridiculous than her tongue, it’s $1,000 for a shirt and jeans that look pretty much like they came from Gap.

    • Imasewsure

Those are much nicer than what you can get from the Gap… but $1000 in cash is a lot nicer than the $100 you would drop at the Gap for something cute enough so there’s that… and yes, Hell NO to the tongue. Can’t wait for her to grow out of that little gesture!

  • kimmeister

Her mouth in the first pic looks like Anne Hathaway’s.

  • heuristicvalue

I think close-toed heels would have been better here, but she looks really cute with a normal amount of fabric on.

She almost looks endearing in that first picture…and I can’t believe I said that.

  • JulieTy

    My God! She’s covered up!!!

  • stubbornthoughts

Love this on her! But something seems off with her smile in that first pic.

  • Cortney Dean

This is maybe the best she’s looked… ever? I like it.

  • bellafigura1

    I love it maximally.

  • asherlev1

I was HOPING you would cover this. This is the best she’s looked in AGES. To my eyes, anyway.

  • schadenfreudelicious

I just cant get behind the Canadian Tuxedo, and I’m Canadian…

  • Imasewsure

Seems a bit casual but very cute and pulled together. I think I finally like those shoes too because they were always meant to be paired with pants and nothing else. Still would hate them with a dress. Love love that belt

  • Kate4queen

    She looks…nice.

  • jilly_d

Love it, full stop. Now put your nasty tongue away.

  • MaggieMae

Remarkable how my opinion of her changes depending on what she is wearing. Image, image, image!

  • MzzPants

Wonder if there’s some country (or hybrid) music in the near future.

  • boweryboy

She looks really cute. More of this please. She’s on the cover of the current issue of LOVE magazine looking just as cute. I’m almost curious enough to shell out the bucks for an import copy.

  • marlie

Maybe she’s doing “country chic” because everyone was so pissed off from her “Black people love me” phase. Anyway, I generally hate denim on denim, but this suits her. Plus, it’s Jay Leno’s off-stage uniform, so I wonder if she did it as a tip of the hat to him.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

When she’s walking on in the first image she looks so tall. And I love the way the line of the button placket on the shirt meets up with the fly on the pants and creates a curve that follows the curve of her spine…exceptional fit and zhuzzing. The half-tuck on the shirt is perfect.

  • LaSylphide

Please, somebody sew my mouth shut before I say something positive about Miley Cyrus. Great outfit and she looks great in it, at least until the tongue makes an appearance.

  • Fred Vaughn

    Yup, the blue sells it.

  • quiltrx

I can’t with the shoes, because in that first shot the shoe and her foot are going completely different directions. An actual shoe shouldn’t do that, shoe designers.
And put your tongue back in your mouth, please. I thought we were past this. Lastly, too many blues here. Nearly Rowsdower.

  • Sam Smith

Adorable outfit, don’t care for the dye job thought.

  • alliekat9090

I understand the hate for her behavior but to say this girl is ugly is ridiculous. She maybe be a lot of things but ugly aint one of them. She’s undeniably

  • guest2visits

I basically don’t like denim on denim but this looks ok for Miley – I think she might have tried something else with her hair since it looks a little too country bouffant the way some of the older ladies wear it. But the blue shoes and the belt were a good idea.

  • Daktari100

I am, by no means, a Miley Cyrus fan. But even I think she looks much improved here. And as much as I hate to admit it, she looked impossibly cute a while back when she wore Madonna on her arm as an accessory. (But then, who wouldn’t?) Now if she could only manage to keep that nasty tongue in her mouth.

  • demidaemon

Cute look. Could have done without the tongue shot, but that’s an “of course” now, isn’t it?

  • GorgeousThings

I’m starting to think she is way smarter and more savvy than I, for one, was willing to give her credit. Unlike the Biebs, she seems to have her head on straight. At least I hope so!

  • lifeisastory

She’s so much more attractive when she’s not playing “desperate attention whore”

  • Fannie Wolston

The exposed feet are something new for her? seems a little naughty now….naked shoes were surprising after a year of the creepers and everything else exposed. Cute kid, cannot hate.

  • Ивас Овде

No, black forums and blogs figured she’d go back to country after she was done appropriating certain types of blackness. She’s a little ahead of schedule, though.

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

    I just love this kid.
Everybody woman wears dresses on these late night shows…she looks great.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

And then she had to go and ruin it by sticking out her tongue.

  • carnush

    Super chic. Well done!

  • Judy_J

I’m concerned about her neck. She has the neck of a 40 year old woman.

  • Gatto Nero

Now if only she’d kept her tongue in her mouth.

  • suzq

Love, love, love, love. Nevertheless, that “approachable look cost more than my entire wardrobe budget last year.

She does continue to be very smart and strategic, unlike her evil Canadian twin….

  • redhead with tattoos

It is just so delightful and refreshing to SEE HER WEARING PANTS.

  • Jess Collett

Did she decide to cosplay as Jay Leno for the evening?

  • Danielle

Too much denim makes me twitch, but I do appreciate a nice chambray shirt.

  • alainalynn

The makeup though.. Could they not have done something better with that?

  • Pound of Salt

    Jay Leno realness
