Can’t say she doesn’t look nice, but I wish she had kept the side slit in the skirt. It edges it up a bit.

    • jspark

      I second your opinion.

    • kmk05

That and nicer shoes! Maybe not the runway pair, but by Santa Jesus these are dreary. They bump the outfit to ‘workplace formal cocktail’. A very nice workplace where you are very lavishly paid, but still.

      • Emily

Esp. when she’s so pale. I’m sure that’s for her acting, but the pointy black shoes make her look positively wraithish.. The black chops her feet right off her legs!

    • Mismarker

I think the slits are still there but we can’t see them because she is standing still with her legs together?

      • jtabz

        Ah, maybe–
And it would be very un-Lady Mary to make sure we all see it by pulling a Jolie!

        • Mismarker

          Heaven forbid!

  • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

    Gorgeous. That belt, wow! :)

  • MoreShoes

I LOVE this dress. Her version and the one on the model. It’s perfect. Where can I find a knock off?

  • deelup

    She looks fantastic.

  • lobsterlen

For a black cocktail dress its interesting. I like it with the slits. I can’t tell if she got rid of them or the slits are not obvious because how she is standing. She doesn’t wear much makeup but then with that skin why should she. The dress looks like something I would wear to death which I am not sure is good enough for the red carpet.

    • colleenjanel

They aren’t really slits … the center of the dress creates a “panel.” You can still see the panel (and where it starts) on Lady Mary’s dress (the little diagonal seams mid-thigh)

  • Blair Sylvester

What a great little dress and bag but I think she could have used more dramatic jewelry and/or more interesting shoes

  • MilaXX

I like this but I wish she had a more interesting shoe and a bolder lip. This would have been the time to deploy a matte red.

    • Danielle

100% agree with you on the matte red.

    • Sandy

Nah I like it the way it is. Simply gorgeous! Any variation is only a matter of taste.

  • sugarkane105

Simple and gorgeous, thought I do wish there was some color somewhere.

  • imspinningaround

That’s a cool dress and the belt is awesome, though I do agree she should have kept the slits open.

Dear T&Lo: Was Anson Mount at this premiere and if so can we get some photos of him please please pleeeeease? p.s. Have I mentioned you both look great today?

    • Mismarker

Re: Anson Mount photos. Make it so!

  • Kathy

    Michelle, you look mahvelous!

  • Gatto Nero

She looks lovely and chic. Love the hair swept back. Stunning.

    • Lily-Rygh

I always think she looks SO much prettier with her hair up. Maybe it’s just more Lady Mary that way, or maybe she just hasn’t landed on the right style when it’s down. Regardless, she looks lovely here!

  • ModernDowager

    that bag is smashing

  • nannypoo

I like this. It’s soft and severe at the same time. She could have tried a little harder with the shoes and I always want to grab her face and fluff on a little more blusher, but overall she really looks pretty.

    • Sarah

      Yes! More blush. Pinch pinch!

  • roverrun

It’s Lady Mary’s grand daughter, who has become the fashion buyer for Harvey Nicks.

    • Shawn EH

Mary is going to turn into Violet exactly one day, isn’t she?

      • sagecreek

        If she’s lucky :)

  • Nancer

Very nice. She could use with a bit more color in her face, but that is a minor quibble.

  • Jessica Freeman

Nothing really earth shattering here, but I think she looks quite lovely.

  • Frank_821

    She looks very chic

I only heard about this movie last night via an ad. Lady Mary in an action flick. that’s a nice stretch. Turns out Miss Lupita is in it too. So we should see some extra glamour shots today

    • Sandy

It’s not a stretch for Michelle. In her theater work, she’s had extensive training in stage combat techniques.

      • Constant Reader

This is the second time today that I find myself saying I wish I could list sword fighting as part of my skill set.

  • Diego!

What an interesting dress… It’s a pitty she is not wearing some red shoes or in any color to enhance this look. She looks great but a bit boring for a red carpet.

  • decormaven

    Great dress; pity it’s against a similarly-colored step n repeat. Publicist/stylist fail.

  • quiltrx

That’s a great dress, and it looks terrific on her. I echo those who wish she had left the slits open, and who want a more interesting shoe.
I really like her hair/makeup. Could have used a very sparkly bracelet.

  • Imasewsure

    Yawn but nice enough

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Is that how Lanvin is supposed to look like on celebrities? Chic?

  • Matthew Davie

Total tangent – but seeing Lady Mary go full-on action her in the trailer for Non-Stop that aired during the Grammys (I think there was a clip of her punching someone IN. THE. FACE.) made me think it’d provide her a great opportunity to va-voom up her RC look into something less icy and more sexy.

  • AzSportsGirl

That neckline is her friend. I’ve longed to wear that neckline, but alas, s a busty(ier)/short-necked gal, it is not meant for me. I look like I have chin-boobs.
I’d love to see that belt in a bronze and a pair of kick ass shoes. Her head looks amazing.

    • Constant Reader

That neckline would make me look like a linebacker, but I agree it looks lovely on Michelle.

  • Constant Reader

I feel like Michelle wants to look chic and appropriate, not edgy or trendy. I can’t fault her for that because it underscores her classic beauty. That said, a bejeweled bracelet and some more interesting shoes would knock this out of the park.

  • KinoEye

I wish the belt (?) were red, or had some color to it. Otherwise, it suits her marvelously.

  • Qitkat

I can pick no fault whatsoever with this look. It suits Michelle to a T. It shows with her magnificent posture (take lessons ladystars, youknowwhoyouare) and her glowing confidence.
My envy remains supreme for her classic English Rose complexion. I wonder how it will hold up for the next 30 years.

    • Snailstsichr

      Yes, hurray for good posture!

    • Monabel

If she continues to stay out of the sun, her complexion will do very well.

  • French_Swede

Very interesting earrings. With the severe lines of the dress and her hair up I’d like to have seen something more sparkly. But that is trivial at best.

  • Erica_Vuitton

This is a snoozefest. Pretty and simple but BORING.

  • ojosazules

I think that in Europe “simple” is considered more chic than it is in the wild wild States. I don’t like her belt. Her face looks soo pretty.

  • Shawn EH

I think Lanvin is pretty perfect for her: monochrome with interesting accessories, as long as she stays with the chic side rather than the sloppy side they sometimes do.

  • marlie

This is so “her.” An interesting dress, but really simple, low-key styling. I like it, but I’d like it much more if she was wearing bolder earrings, or more colorful clutch or shoes. I get that she’s not going to do all-of-the-above, but just one would still elevate the look a bit.

  • mickiemonkey

She looks fantastic. Unfortunate backdrop for her.

  • formerlyAnon

Well that’s an effing win! Not exciting, but fantastic nonetheless.

  • MM4321

I think the side slit’s still there, just on the right side . . . maybe the photo got reversed. That’s a great dress.

  • nowlo

Is it me or is Michelle Dockery becoming prettier and prettier? I mean, she was always a knock-out, but she’s been looking especially good lately. She should give her beauty team a raise.

  • teensmom99

I don’t like what that top does to her shoulders. She looks too broad (and broader than I believe she is).

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I really don’t like how the back of the neckline sits up on her neck. It makes her look like she has an overdeveloped trapezius.

  • livesarah

Black again. So draining on her, so boring.

  • amaranth16

I’m so sick of her LBDs.

  • PastryGoddess

I just wonder what would happen if she strapped on an Alexander McQueen and set her hair and makeup to DRAG

  • http://ediblecville.blogspot.com Libby

Lovely. Milky white skin against black is so glamorous, vintage, wonderful….

  • http://missbethg.wordpress.com Beth Ann

Love this dress on her, but it deserved bolder make-up!

  • allcapsERINN

    That belt!
