Melonie Diaz in Zac Posen at the National Board Of Review Awards

Posted on January 08, 2014

This is a really cute look, but we think it’s because it found its wearer.

“Fruitvale Station” star Melonie Diaz attends the 2014 National Board Of Review Awards Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City in Valentino.

Zac Posen Fall 2013 Collection

Zac Posen’s stuff tends to be a little tricky/fussy/overdesigned for our tastes and in this case, we wish this dress didn’t have that flounce-thing in the front of it, but the color and overall shape really work well for her and the beading is pretty. Hair and makeup are gorgeous. The shoes are kind of a miss and we might have liked seeing her try this with a pair of tights but it’s definitely her dress to work.

This is also the kind of dress Lena Dunham should try more often. That kind of shoulder would work wonders for her and the color would look great on her.

  • @Biting Panda

It’s a very Kiernan Shipka dress.

  • She’s a precious unborn faun, to steal a phrase.

  • charlotte

Best look (of a woman) I’ve seen all day! Lena Dunham wouldn’t wear it because it looks pretty.

    • demidaemon

So, so true. It would also help with her shoulder issues, which she seems totally against.

  • jonnyf8

I had to look her up but she is adorable!!

  • annachronizm

am i the only one who thinks she looks like a tanner version of helen bonham carter? 😀

    • It’s the eyebrows and slightly anxious expression.

      • annachronizm

yessss right on! It’s the anxious/slight deer in headlights expression.

    • In_Stitches

      I’m getting more Mindy Kaling.

      • marlie

I thought it was Selena Gomez at first.

        • StarburstLady

          …you mean it’s not?!

    • kimmeister

In the closeup, I’m getting a whiff of Michelle Rodriguez. I think it’s something about the brow area.

      • livesarah

I thought the same, is it the eyes?

  • Sarah

I like the runway shoes & tights! (I don’t want her to have done exactly that, mind you, I just like them) For the actual dress, I wish the neckline was solid and didn’t have the sheer triangle, because it is One Step Too Far in the fussy details department, if you ask me.

    • Jacob Bowen

You’re lucky Zac only went ONE step too far. If it didn’t have the sheer triangle it wouldn’t be “cool”…but it would look SO much better. Zac Posen……UGH.

    • I went back and looked at the runway shoes – love, huh?

      • Sarah

YESS. They made me remember I have some kitten-heeled green velvets with an ankle strap that need to come out before the winter is over…

  • thunderthighs

This reminds me strongly of the 1940’s revival in the 1990s, a la League of Their Own. Very cute.

  • DTLAFamilies

OMG, the girl from Raising Victor Vargas! So happy to see her on the red carpet. Another reason for me to get off my ass and see Fruitvale Station.

    • Jessica Freeman

….and I still don’t know who she is. +1 to you for two references.

      • DTLAFamilies

She was also in that Michel Gondry movie with Jack Black, the one where the video store employees act out the movies. Lemme google…ah yes, Be Kind, Rewind, which I haven’t seen either even though I love Gondry. Time to fire up the Netflix queue.

        • misstressofsylar

You really need to watch Be Kind, Rewind, which in my opinion is the best film Jack Black’s ever made.

    • Introspective

was that not the greatest movie ever? loved that flick. such an nyc movie. so heartfelt. everyone in that film should be getting more work. but alas hollywood can only be dragged kicking and screaming into diversity…

and yes, same here about seeing fruitvale. loving the cuteness of michael and now learning that she was in another fave film of mine makes me want to support this one even more.

she looks gorgeous here by the way. hair and makeup especially, and the color of the dress is totally hers.

  • Jessica Freeman

It may look good on her, but she looks slightly terrified in every shot.

    • Karen Belgrad

Agreed… As much as I like the dress/hair/make-up, the terrified eyes and stiff posing are a distraction!

  • kimmeister

I was *just* thinking that Lena would be well served by such a dress.

I have no idea who this girl is, she has sort of a deer-in-the-headlights look about her.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Very pretty! I actually *do* like it better on the model with the black tights, but it looks beautiful on Melonie.

  • Sophia Finfer

She looks beautiful. Michael B Jordan has (deservedly! and adorably, and impeccably..) been getting most of the attention for Fruitvale, but she was great in it as well so I hope she gets some more, well-deserved spotlight now that awards season is starting!

  • KT

I agree that the dress looks great on her, but I actually think the makeup is terrible and too-matchy. I’m also distracted by how uncomfortable/terrified she looks in all of these. I’ve worked with her before and I know that bitch has attitude — come on honey, bring it!

  • Danielle

    Those lowlights are perfection.

  • butterflysunita

I don’t like the dress, but she looks great in it–the color is beautiful on her.

  • marlie

I have no idea who this girl is, but she’s beautiful. I’m not sold on the dress, but her hair and makeup are just lovely, and I like the color on her.

  • MilaXX

Agree on all counts although I don’t think Lena would find the dress edgy enough. Shame because it really would look cute on her provided she managed to wear a proper bra.

    • marlie

Funny thing is, it could be edgy just by HER wearing it, and pairing it with the right shoes and hair/makeup.

      • ShaoLinKitten

She could wear it with funky colored tights and weird hair and call it edgy.

    • teensmom99

” provided she managed to wear a proper bra.” Ha, Mila, you are an optimistic Pollyanna, always believing the best of people.

      • MilaXX

and I do believe in Tinker Bell!

  • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

She’s gorgeous and this dress works with her hair, her eyes, her coloring. Well done.

  • Girl, that’s your dress.

  • teensmom99

I actually think that dress is amazing and could work on a lot of people–me and my teen included (in appropriate sizes for each of us).

  • crash1212

It’s a pretty color, but little Zac’s “saloon chic” does not appeal to me one bit. I will say this dress benefits greatly with the wearing of tights.

  • quiltrx

Cute dress, and it looks really cute on her (I don’t think I’ve ever seen her before…). Like you said, Posen is usually fussy and not that easy to wear for real folks, but this is definitely working.

  • E. D.

  • Eve Farren Farber

Cute look for her. Who is she?

  • kim bunchalastnames

i think the dress is adorable, fullstop.

  • DeTrop

Finally, someone who looks appropriate for a GALA. Love this dress.

  • lillyvonschtupp

What’s with the “deer in the headlights” look?

  • Katesymae

Oh no! I hate to quibble with TLo, but I would hesitate to put Lena Dunham in those sleeves (and possibly that neckline). As a girl who has a similar tendency as LD to look blocky/blobby in the wrong dress and has undefined arms, my observations are: accentuated shoulder: yes; Cinderella-at-the-ball sleeve: makes me look like a gorilla in a tutu. They’re on point about the color and the remainder of the silhouette though!

  • I think it looks better on her than it does on the model. Gorgeous.

  • nycfan

It looks matronly on the model. Looks great on this child, though.
