Melissa McCarthy in ASOS at the Variety’s Creative Impact Awards

Posted on January 06, 2014

Looks like SOMEONE made a New Year’s resolution to get her style shit together!

Melissa McCarthy attends Variety’s Creative Impact Awards and 10 Directors to Watch brunch during the 2014 Palm Springs International Film Festival in Palm Springs, California in an ASOS wrap dress.

The hem’s not that great and the clutch is really fighting with the dress, which is why this isn’t a WERQ post, but we have to applaud the style and sassiness on display here. This from a lady who always dressed in a manner that said “Please stop looking at me.”  And because she’s always been clueless as to what shapes work well for her, we must shout HUZZAHs to the heavens because the shape of this dress looks fantastic on her, as does the eye-catching print. We don’t love-love the shoes, but we do think they were the direction to go in. She needs something substantial on her feet, both for balance and proportion, but also to give her outfits as much personality as possible.

Very, very well done. Attagirl. More, please.

  • she looks so good!

  • Danielle

YOU GO, GIRL! Three snaps in a Z formation!

  • Rhonda Shore

She really looks radiant. Hair and make-up are also well done.

  • marlie

I hate the print of the dress. Hate, hate, hate. And I don’t like the shoes, either. BUT, MM’s hair and makeup look really good, and for the most part, the shape of the dress is great. I rather love the clutch, but it really fights with the dress. This is certainly a step in the right direction, though.

    • yulaffin

Agree about the print of the dress although I do like its shape. Hate the clutch – ugly – but love the shoes.

    • StellaZafella

The colorway of the clutch is that of a poisonous Coral Snake…coupled with the floral print I’d say it’s tongue-in-cheeky and way beyond sassy.

      • Jackie4g

I like the print and I like the clutch, not exactly sure about them together, but the colors are very close, so it is, as you say, sassy. I really dislike the shoes. All in all, she looks good.

  • Sobaika

I kind of hate this? But it might be the best she’s ever looked?

Oh, Sookie. I want such good things for you.

    • marlie

      My sentiments exactly.

    • pattyw

She always looked better dressed in Sookie’s bandana and apron than she ever does on the red carpet.

    • Introspective

i hear you. florals can sometimes really work, and sometimes really not. im undecided on whether i like this print.

but the shape is working like gangbusters on her. and damn if those shoes arent elevating the look too –not your safe black strappy sandal given the interest created in the crisscrosses &stacked heel etc.

so the look amounts to more sassy than not, and for melissa given her past style missteps, its damn well a win.

    • Katie Wolf

I love it – possibly b/c this is the Sookiest she has looked in a long time & I’ve always equated Sookieness w/ being awesome, happy & funny (also clumsy but that doesn’t pertain here).

  • butterflysunita

Ooh, I love the clutch. And I think it works with the whole look. She looks great.

  • beckytee

love her, love the dress, love the shoes. not so much into the anchorlady hair. but that is the tiniest quibble and does not prevent her from LOOKING AMAZING.

    • River

Yeah, she tends to do the helmet hair a lot, which is sad because she’d gorgeous and has good hair!

      • beckytee

oh HI RIVER. fancy meeting you here. 🙂
hollywood hair, why you gotta be so tacky?

        • River

          Well HEY THERE.

  • Mrs.G

HA! I have a nearly identical dress from Asos Curve. AND I LIKE THAT PRINT. *twirls*

  • Diego!

She looks good. BUT that matchy clutch must go. And I’m not very sure about the shoes either… But it’s an OK overall

    • MoHub

      Hate the shoes.

      • Diego!

        Yes. They suck!

  • personal best imho. She looks great!

  • @Biting Panda

I find myself more in the Camp of No. It could be that my hatred of the shoes is spilling over into my feelings on the dress. Or, it could be that dress itself is just giving me a hint too much sofa. I don’t doubt my feelings on the purse though. That thing is hella wrong.
Regardless, I am all for MM working more in this direction and I hope she continues to do so.

  • Miss_Led

Bringing it! And she KNOWS it.

  • ccinnc

How nicely supported the girls are! And the makeup is lovely. She really looks terrific.

  • Sarah

I do not like her hair, makeup, or hem, but yeah, she’s working the shape of that dress and looks way better than usual. Way to go, girl!

  • MilaXX

I love it! She looks good and more importantly she looks like she knows it.

  • I am cuckoo for bright orange/light blue. Also – her feet look comfortable her toes are not threatening to go over the ledge – that is a solid win.

  • Janet B

    She looks beautiful.

(I don’t love it, but she’s clearly pleased and it’s reflected in her face/attitude)

  • teensmom99

She looks great. I almost thought she lost some weight and that’s why she’s investing in her look–but then I realized that as someone who is losing weight myself, I’m projecting. And she looks so damn good that I don’t know if it’s weight loss or wearing the right clothes. So happy to see her looking so good. Not a fan of the shoes, though, and I think she often wears platforms which give her a weird look.

    • firefey

Clothes that fit are always flattering, and that polish makes people think you’re slimmer. Tailoring ftw.

  • VioletFem

I like the shape of the dress, but not the print which clashes with the really cute purse. Still, this is a major improvement.

  • mjude

she looks great. I don’t care for the shoes in general.

  • Shawn EH

Love the purse, with this outfit or not. Vampy!

  • Dan_In_NYC

If this isn’t the definition of an Attagirl post, I don’t know what is. Good one, Missy.

  • Judy_S

I like the dress on her and her hair and makeup and even the clutch. Not sure about those shoes, but at least her feet look nice in them.

  • decormaven

A monochromatic clutch, plus a mani to match the pedi, and this would be WERQ-worthy! Snaps!

  • Little_Olive

Oh my, I hate it with a passion! Am I still drunk? Are you? Is she?

  • Rand Ortega

She looks absolutely delicious. The bust could have been a bit more tailored, but the colors of the dress make her gorgeous eyes pop. Hair & makeup are flawless. Best ever.

  • carnush

Personality and shape! And a smile! Lovely.

  • GeoDiva

Get rid of the bag and its a home run!

  • Thank you for this you guys! Love you for this… xoxoxo

  • Hate the bag, but that dress is perfect for her! SO much more flattering than the stuff she usually wears.

  • mmebam

    Sleeve length

    • filmcricket

Replace “sleeve length” with “clutch” and I’m right there with you, although I do see what you’re saying about the sleeves. She looks so happy though and it’s such an improvement that I’m still giving her an Attagirl.

      • mmebam

It’s a cute clutch, just inappropriate for this outfit. And she does look fabulous!

  • Ali B

  • Michelle Wilson

I hate that print but SHE looks fantastic, which just goes to show, you gotta try it on, try it on, try it on.

  • Imasewsure

Wish she had saved the clutch and shoes for another outfit but I bet I would be applauding the shoes too if not for that eye-searing clutch. Dress and everything else is great.

    • kimmeister

That clutch would be awesome with a LBD. Or with the outfit I am wearing today. 🙂

  • Viviennne

uh, no. This is a massive cringe worthy bouquet from the bottom up.

  • KT

The bag and shoes are horrifying, but otherwise she looks great. It’s also clear that she FEELS great in this, which is really helping the overall impact. Get it, girl!

  • SewingSiren

    The shoes are my favorite.

  • Celeste

    She looks fabulous!!

  • Courtenay P

    loving this. get it gurl

  • Blair Sylvester

she looks great! I never really got that whole flack over her Elle cover. It was a beautiful coat and it wasn’t like they were trying to hide her shape or drown her in fabric. I think the other girls should be jealous because they were wearing glorified shape wear and lingerie and she got a coat for a fall cover.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Oooo, I like that dress. If I planned on staying at my current size, I’d invest in something very similar.

    • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

      Exactly what you said!

  • Morales Mike

And the hair! Finally she got the right hair. She needed that lift up there. Sorry, always loved her since Gilmore Girls.

  • I don’t love a floral, but the shape of that dress is perfection. Good for her.

  • EEKstl

Actually…LOVE the shoes. Huzzahs all around. She looks good and her green eyes are quite something, aren’t they?

  • ewes_urn_aim

  • ballerinawithagun

I hate this print but I love the colors. If it were abstract or an Ikat I would have loved it! I like the purse with the dress but I wish the dress looked more like the purse…Yes, she does need substantial shoes. She looks very happy!

  • ASOS is doing the lord’s work in providing cute clothes for fat women. And at a reasonable price too. I seriously have an EMOTIONAL connection to that store.

    • Anna_Cecilia

Amen. Whoever came up with and designs for ASOS Curve should win some kind of award. They truly understand the idea that being “plus size” does not equate with zero interest in fashion.

I agree about the hem but otherwise she looks pretty terrific here. More importantly, she looks happy and comfortable!

  • alyce1213

Closer, but no cigar yet. Trouble is, it’s a chintzy floral print, just common and cheap-looking. A flattering geometric (or solid, or color-blocked, or nicer floral) would work better because this shape is good for her. The shoes are fun, but not with this dress.

  • Sam Smith

I think she looks great, minus the shoes, and she feels great based on that smile and swagger.

  • kimmeister

I agree that she needs a more substantial shoe, I just don’t like these particular ones for her. She should probably stay away from shoes with lots of skinny straps or anything that laces up directly on the skin.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

MUCH better! And I don’t even mind the shoes, because that’s a difficult style to wear without them looking like they’re cutting into your feet. Hers look like they fit perfectly, so I have to give her points for that.

  • Trickytrisha

That clutch makes me shiver… not in a good way. I agree the shape of the dress is great on her, but find that print reminds me of my Aunt Patsy’s polyester tops a couple of decades ago. I love a great print, but this one doesn’t do it for me. It is refreshing to see her stepping up her game, style wise, though.

  • ChelseaNH

Not sure I can co-sign the print or the colors — but I love that she’s wearing a colorful print, and not a monochromatic tent.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I like the dress and the clutch but am not on board with the clompy shoes. Go figure!

  • Pterodactyl111

    I want that dress.

  • ashtangajunkie

Great shape for her – it’s fantastic to actually see her shape!

  • ConnieBV

Hands-down ASOS is a brand that designs for her shape and personality. Good choice.

  • rondele

Love the dress. Is the background black or dark navy? Either way it works. I like the floral in it, the shape is almost perfect, but it’s the look on her face that nails it.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

She looks happy with herself in this, and I think a wrap dress works for her figure. The shoes are tad clunky, but I am giving Melissa points for going for a more fitted lookoverall. Well done, dear.

  • dorothea_brooke

OMG. I *have* that dress. Not that any of you give a crap, but as it will be the first and only time a garment I own is featured on TLo, I had to share. Not coincidentally, I like the dress! She looks pretty. And I like the shoes. Us big gals need SHOES.

  • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

Not a fan of floral on most anybody, and not on this dress. I really love Melissa McCarthy and thought she was fabulous in that coat on the cover of Elle recently. I am not liking this on her, and I don’t care for those shoes with this floral dress. That said, I love the clutch! I’d rather her dress mimic the clutch print than the floral.

  • guest2visits

Not a print I would have ever looked twice at – but she looks terrific in it. Like the shoes too. Loved her cover for Elle magazine.

  • Sunraya

Her face looks great, I like the dress, I do not like those shoes on her.

  • kategs

hmmm…I like the clutch, to me it adds the necessary zip to the flower print. I think she looks fabu.

  • demidaemon

Great job. Miss McCarthy. My only real quibble is the hem. It just looks off.

  • daniela

    mi volete come modella ????

  • daniela

fatelo anche in italiaaa per favoreeeeeeeeeeeee

  • Hell yeah gurl!

  • formerlyAnon

I don’t like a single element of the ensemble but I think she looks great. Why I would need a brilliant and reliable stylist if people were going to be taking photos of me for publications.

  • suzq

Nice. Nice to see prints, too.

  • Aidan B

    She looks fantastic!

  • Ann VerWiebe

I was interested to find out that she attended FIT. I wonder if she has been asking her designer friends for advice.

  • lalahartma

    Looking good!
