Matthew McCounaghey and Camila Alves at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards

Posted on January 13, 2014

Oh, you two. We just can’t stay mad. We kinda tore you both to shreds the last time we saw you, but we can’t hate this:

Matthew McCounaughey and Camila Alves attend the 2014 Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California in Dolce&Gabbana.

We simply don’t have it in us to hate a man wearing a green velvet tuxedo jacket and vest – AND NOT LOOKING LIKE A TOTAL SMACKED ASS.

Are we wrong here? He’s pretty much making that green velvet tuxedo jacket and vest work. She’s wearing the only kind of dress she ever wears, but at least this one doesn’t look tacky, although it seems to be a bit snug across her front. Still, we have to salute them both. They’re being very true to their mafioso/stripper aesthetic, but they’ve classed it up a bit for the venue. His hair is still too high and too crunchy. Also, someone needs to have a talk with him about how to apply his bronzer evenly. Parts of his face look like they went to the beach and other parts look like they stayed inside for the weekend.

Is it weird to say that I think the suit accentuates his personality?

    • gabbilevy

May be weird, but it DOES.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

        It absolutely does!

  • Paigealicious

    I miss Shear Genius.

    • demidaemon

Me too. But I miss Shear Genius with Jacqueline Smith, not Camilla Alves. (I seriously thought to put a derogatory comment here about her ineffective hosting attributes, but I decided they all sounded too mean to type out.)

  • Scimommy

LOL, “mafioso/stripper aesthetic”! Well, at least they are made for each other.

  • ailujailuj

totally agree – what a great look on him (mostly – jacket is a tad too small but he is not really standing straight so hard to tell). not sure anyone else could pull that off.

  • VicksieDo

The bronzer-acolypse last night was not attractive…lol

    • VicksieDo

I still can’t believe he won an award for acting!

      • Evan

He’s really improved. He was really good in Bernie too.

        • NBG

          Great movie.

      • ShaoLinKitten

Watch True Detective. He’s mesmerizing and I expect an Emmy next year to go with his Golden Globe.

      • sojourneryouth

Actually, he blew me away in DBC. He really found new depths to his acting. You’d never know about his high-and-naked bongo playing days. Allllright, alright :)

        • Sarah

Ya know, he is quoted for that character in D & C because he played it really well. It was later (Fool’s Gold, anyone?) that he began to downplay his potential.

          • filmcricket

He improvised quite a bit of it, and the “L-I-V-I-N” bit is apparently something his father used to say.

          • Sarah

That explains why he seemed pretty authentic in the character, I guess.

          • sojourneryouth

            Good point!

        • bitchybitchybitchy

McCounaughey went far beyond losing a lot of weight for his role in DBC;he really put himself out there and gave a truly fine performance.
They’re both looking good here; liking the velvet tux on Matt, and she’s working the glam vibe here.

      • AnaRoW

He’s always been able to act (See “Lone Star” and “Frailty” for early examples) but, for years, instead of focusing on finding good roles, he focused on trying to be a big movie star with a string of forgettable romantic “comedies”. He’s been on a really hot streak since Magic Mike.

        • VicksieDo

Well okay then, guess he’s more than a sexy boy~!

        • smallgirlsaretrouble

I thought he was really good in Magic Mike – was a bit of a revelation/surprise for me.

  • Evan

I think he looks better shaved and he still looks a bit drunk/high to me. I love what both of them are wearing though.

    • jen_vasm

The best I ever saw him styled was in ‘Contact’ He had this gorgeous red scarf on at the end…..

  • Sobaika

Very glamourous and toeing the line of sleaze. Nicely done, McConathing.

  • Spreecord

I would love to see her in green velvet and him in black sequins. Think about it.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Johnny Weir could design him something fabulous.

      • Evan

If Johnny designed something for him it would be more like pink sequins, and I say that as a fan of his lol And feathers! You can’t forget feathers!

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

          That would be fine too.

        • Spreecord

Don’t go halfassed peacock, I say.

        • sojourneryouth

And probably fur. I loves me some Weir, but I can’t with his unrepentant fur obsession, and this is coming from someone who has a fake fur-trimmed coat that I love, love, LOVE despite its possible (likely!) tackiness.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I have a faux leopard coat. I embrace the tacky!

          • Spreecord

I used to have a faux leopard coat, in a younger and skinnier life. I miss that thing.

          • Sarah

I have more than one pair of glittery sneakers. Holla!

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I only have one, at the moment! Silver sequinned Converse.

          • sojourneryouth

Hide it ‘fore I steal it, foodycat! I loves me some faux leopard.

        • Rand Ortega

          I’d Crowdfund it.

        • formerlyAnon

Do sequined assless chaps require design, exactly?

  • sugarkane105

Love his look, hers is a bit tired. Glad he’s being recognized for his recently much-improved career.

  • Introspective

Agree that matthew looks like a mafia kingpin but one that has had a shower and visible other forms of grooming. For that alone we have progress!

The suit is pretty. It might be prettier on idris elba though. Because everything is prettier on him.

    • manina

I think the reason he is not a very sharp dresser might be that he spent a large part of his life in shorts and flip flops hanging out at the beach. He is a great actor, though. And I his speech was cool and sweet.

  • marlie

I’m not thrilled with his look from the neck up, but he’s pretty much killing it in the velvet jacket and vest. And she looks good, too: sexy and slinky, but not trashy.

  • altalinda

Because one of my all-time favorite movies is Dazed and Confused, I got a kick when he came out with “All right, all right, all right.”

    • Karen Belgrad

I squeed and clapped! (As I did when Jared Leto won… a little because I enjoyed DBC, but mostly because Angela Chase and Jordan Catalano both now have Golden Globes!)

    • filmcricket

He had the speech of the night, for sure. Not just “all right, all right, all right” but closed with “You just gotta keep livin.’” I squeee’d aloud.

    • Call me Bee

I did, too. I’ll bet my two daughters watched that movie a hundred times ca. 1996.

    • decormaven

I loved D&C because it WAS my high school days! LOL. For Matthew, I’m glad he’s getting his due; there is substance behind the smoke.

      • formerlyAnon

The boy I crushed on in high school chemistry wore the EXACT shirt that McConaughey wears in that movie. (ETA: the one with the faux quilted yoke.) I spent a lot of time examining Ben’s (I still remember his name) shoulders in it. My ex- lived that movie to the exact Texas high school culture, locations and road trip to the concert in Houston. I simply recognized the period.

    • anneland

I loved his speech. It was very laid back and McCounaghey-y.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I love the green, and I thought her dress was stunning on the RC. They both cleaned up nicely.

  • Glam Dixie

I’m pretty sure she has herself confused with Sofia Vergara, his bronzer is too heavy all over for my taste but I really don’t hate the tux.

  • ShaoLinKitten

He looks great, she looks OK. Did any of the Bitter Kittens watch True Detective? The premiere was on last night opposite the Golden Globes… and it was AMAZING. McConaughey is going to get all the awards.

    • MilaXX

I’m still catching up on my other tv watching last night. I do intend to check it out.

      • ShaoLinKitten

I was captivated pretty much instantly, especially by McConaughey. I hope the whole series lives up to the promise of the premiere. And YAY for another anthology show. That’s an idea whose time has come back around, I hope.

  • Little_Olive

    Yes on TLo’s assessment.
Whoever did her eye makeup was drunk or wearing boxing gloves.

    • kimmeister

Totally! It’s like a page out of the “contouring on crack” handbook.

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

Señora, find the Spanx already, please? and before someone wants to hang me for being racist, I AM HISPANIC, ok? Ok. Matthew, papi, you’re getting a Latinissimo going to the prom vibe going there. Not bad, needs a little work….

    • alyce1213

I won’t downtick, but really — REALLY? She needs Spanx? Where?

      • Sobaika

Where TLo says it looks snug across her front. I don’t think it looks bad or in need of control top underwear though.

        • Monabel

Or, go up a size? Under-belly-cupping is on my rational hate list.

          • demidaemon

She could possible be pregnant again as well.

Gotta love starting some pregnancy rumors!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

      Spanx? For what?

    • Call me Bee

Our groomsmen wore those green velvet tuxes at our wedding. In 1975.

    • Sarah

Being Hispanic doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that her dress is too tight and pulling across her abdomen in a less than flattering way.

    • formerlyAnon

Seeing the reaction to your remarks, I’m gonna get crucified for saying in my comment that they look like they’re ready for their Univision/Telemundo interviews. Ah well. I spent a lot of the ’80s in south Texas trying to tactfully avoid wearing the way too [for my tastes] body conscious, frilly and shiny clothes my loving Latina mother-in-law made for me and I stand by my possibly culturally insensitive remarks. (though I don’t know that she really needs the spanx – she just needs a half inch in the seams, IMO.)

      • Stefanie Mackenziews

No, not crucified, it’s just if you are one, or lived in the culture, usually there are certain peculiarities, whether they be sartorial, culinary; whateverThe Hispanic influence here is undeniable. I would assume because of Ms. Alves. I said Spanx because her dress is that bit too tight, and many Latin women, like Southern women of a certain age (me again…yes, I’m a 50/50 combo plate), will default to the Spanx rather than letting Nature be shown. His tux, if you are in any largely Hispanic area, will still be popular. Formerly, you’re right, and Call me Bee, so are you. Telemundo and Univisión, they’re ready for their interviews!

  • alyce1213

He still needs a little more cleaning up, and another inch of length to that jacket. I’m not a big MM fan by any means, but it was a nice surprise that he won. I hope that he can Willis it the fuck up, considering his new stature.

  • http://www.getbrilliantfx.com/ BrilliantFx Skin Products

I love the entire look on both of them – a punch of color is great for basic black. What I can not get past is how sickly he still looks from the severe weight loss he sustained for DBC. It almost looks like he is having a hard time recovering from the part. This has got to be the reason he showed up with all of the scruff on his face and insane spray tan – he looks frail and thin.

    • filmcricket

I haven’t seen DBC yet, but saw Wolf of Wall Street recently, and yeah, it’s scary. Given his devotion to working out, he’s not the kind of guy who’s likely to pack the pounds back on by scarfing donuts, and generally I think it’s better to do it safely and gradually. When Christian Bale beefed up for Batman right after The Machinist, there were all these articles about how he’d taken years off his life doing the lose-then-gain so quickly.

    • sojourneryouth

Yeah, I did see DBC (which was quite good, if a bit long), and he got FRIGHTENINGLY thin for that role, like he really did look near death. He has gained back most of the weight, but he does still look frail and a bit rough. I’m not sure that dramatic weight loss can be done by an already thin middle-aged man without some serious consequences. He isn’t fully recovered, I think.

  • Daisy Walker

She’s very Morticia-Addams-goes-Hollywood. I hate that his jacket looks a skosh tight, but maybe that’s because he’s got his arm around her.

  • Ashleigh

he’s a douche, and I use that word very sparingly. Therefor, the outfit is douchy. Can’t help it. And yes, lower the hair, dude. Bring it down a notch. And quit with the cocky bullsh*t

  • a_liking

I just can’t believe that TLo just said a skin tight fully sequined gown “doesn’t look tacky”! ahh, what is the world coming to…

  • Call me Bee

He: Looked good. What was up with all the rambling speeches last night–his was a little rambling as well–but very heartfelt. She: looked good, too. I just laugh every time I see her because of TLo’s hilarious recaps of her in Shear Genius. I know, I know, it was years ago, but I still laugh….

  • CeeRich

I’m shocked but they look good. LOL

  • Carla_Charlton

That green jacket looks too short. And too tight.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    A world of NOPE.

  • Erica

He looks good, and his speech was stupendously, awesomely random. Afterwards my husband said “he’s a bro from way back, isn’t he?” I really need to see that film.

  • MilaXX

I really like his look. Hers on the other hand, no so much. The neckline needs to be opened up. A “v” or lower scoop would work. This version is being shamed by Olivia WIlde.

  • MartyBellerMask

Yes, I agree with the assessment. But mostly, I think they are just cute together. His speech was adorable and he is clearly CRAZY ABOUT HIS WOMAN. Can’t hate on that!

  • Rand Ortega

    Mayor & Mrs. McCheese-y.

  • CatherineRhodes

Still tacky as Hell. Although he deserved the win for “Dallas Buyers Club.”

  • lifeisastory

She looks terrific. Is he wearing a matching vest? That took the comedy a little too far.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i’m a sucker for forest green velvet. i was surprised that he seemed like such a nice guy on the red carpet walk, talking to all the fans, signing autographs and taking phone pictures. changed my impression of him completely.

    • conniemd

I saw him on Food Network with Guy Fieri’s show and he was such a nice guy and talking about his charity and he seemed like a cool guy. He mentioned that his son was being bilingual and raised to be a part of both his parents’ culture. He just LOOKS sleazy most of the time. I’ve loved his acting since the lawyer in “A Time to Kill.”

  • Jacob Bowen

Thank you Mr. McConnaughottie for being the redeemer for green velvet. My cousin’s bridesmaid dresses for her wedding were green velvet (*shudders*) and I haven’t been able to look at it since. Maybe your inherent sleaze helped with the disassociation…..and I would totally still sleep with you.

  • e jerry powell

Matthew is trying fiercely to change my mind about the D&G spring collection.

Tony Ward is doing a better job. Still, I’d go home with these two for an after party.

  • teensmom99

Miss Teen said: “Oh–he looks good again.”

  • fananafanafophalec

i just always wonder what he would look like if he FUCKING stood up straight. he wouldn’t look so damn creepy for one.

  • demidaemon

I love that they coordinated their designer frocks.

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/divine_aphasia/ Constant Cat

I kinda want his suit. Fer meeee. Love velvet in almost any color, but green is particularly ravishing. OH McCounaghey!

  • Joanna

He’s wearing bottle green velvet and said, “Alright, alright, alright…” just like Wooderson in his speech. He’s going to be forgiven for a lot.

  • elzatelzabelz

I sat there thinking last night, “He is quite possibly the only man who could wear that and make it work.” Loved them-they are their silly, sexy selves.

  • formerlyAnon

My first thought was “They are ready for their interviews on Univision & Telemundo.” (My second thought: I spent too much time in south Texas in the ’80s.) More to the point, on their last appearance here someone remarked “You can take the boy out of Uvalde but you can’t take Uvalde out of the boy.” He is who he is, though I personally think he’s overworking the Texas homeboy schtick a bit.

  • understateddiva

Totally agree, TLo – if somebody told me about McCounaughey’s suit ahead of time, I would be bracing myself for the horror, but he looks….really nice. Someone else was wearing the same suit (sans vest) but for the life of me I can’t find it in any of the slideshows now.

  • rondele

I love that green velvet jacket. He’s killing it! So much better this time.

  • quiltrx

That’s the most I’ve liked his hair in practically ever. And flying your lounge lizard freak flag is fine if the fit is good, which it is.
That’s a weird dress, btw. it needs *something*, but I can’t even say what. it’s just too much an expanse of black shiny for me. And it’s really weird how round it makes her tummy look from the front, when from the side it’s obviously pretty flat.

  • guest2visits

Well I liked the last jacket he wore – it just suited his personality, and I feel the same about this one.
I like Camila’s super glittery gown much better than the one with all the lace cutouts. Something about the neckline is bothering me though; like it’s jersey or something. Still very nice on her.

  • amf0001

    that’s a ski mask tan

  • sunflower

I think they look great. I wish he would keep the hairstyle that he has in True Detective; it’s much cuter than this.

  • Gatto Nero

What’s with her eyebrows? Looks like she applied them with a Sharpie.

  • Aaminah Khan

Using “stripper” as a fashion insult: can we please not?

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

      No, we can.

  • French_Swede

I can’t help it, I love Matthew McConaughey. Whether he’s wearing a lush green velvet tuxedo jacket or naked, playing the bongos, it doesn’t matter.

Her? I have a ridiculous irrational hate for her. No, I’m not jealous … she just bothers me.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Oh, wow! I’m voting these two Most Improved! The green velvet tux suits him, and it kind of elevates him, you know? It classes him up and still suits his personality. As for her, I can’t not love a slinky Morticia Adaams gown in black sequins! LOVE!

  • Danielle

WHAT is going on with her eyes? Is it the makeup?
