Matthew McConaughey in Dolce&Gabbana at the “Dallas Buyers Club” Rome Premiere

Posted on January 30, 2014

This is so wrong it’s making our eyelids twitch spasmodically.

Spasmodically! You just TRY and name a celeb/style site that uses such language! Quality vocabulary. It’s what we’re all about here at T Lo Pretensions Unlimited.

Matthew McConaughey attends the premiere of “Dallas Buyers Club” in Rome in a Dolce&Gabbana suit paired with Salvatore Ferragamo shoes.

Look, before you start yelling at us, you should know that we LOVELOVELOVE the vest and jacket. These are not the things with which we have a problem. It’s the idea of pairing them with black pants AND a black shirt. Nothing says “Please try our potato skins” like a black shirt, black pants, purple tie and print vest. Let’s correct this. Walk with us.

There’s no way we’d recommend matching suit pants. A model could pull off that print as a full suit, but we’re almost 100 percent sure Matthew can’t. That means solid pants are a must. The jacket and vest have touches of bronze, beige and grey. We would therefore go with a charcoal grey pant (that was HEMMED PROPERLY), a light brown shoe and a white shirt. He can keep the tie.

Yes? No?

  • KinoEye

Ahahaha, please try our potato skins. Agreed with your recommendations. Is it just me, or has his hair suddenly gotten darker? I like a bushy eyebrow, but he could do with toning them down just a hair (ha).

    • GorgeousThings

Definitely darker, but I always discount hair color on actors. I would be willing to bet it’s for a role.

      • kittenwithaquip

I would be willing to bet he’s covering some grey and saying it’s for a role.

        • Trent

What’s wrong with a guy using a little Just For Men once in a while? Not that I’m speaking from personal experience, or anything…*cough*

OT, I’m fine with his black pants (if they were properly hemmed) but agree with TLo on that mafioso shirt.

  • Frank_821

yes the suit is off. If you were just to remove the vest, that would make a huge difference

  • MilaXX

Scroll down fug. Now I agree with the uncle’s suggestions but I also think this is Not His Suit. This same look on say Michael Jordan with properly fitted pants in black or gray would look fab. On Mathew it’s just sad.

    • marlie

And Michael B. Jordan just might be able to pull off a whole suit in this print.

    • SierraDelta

“…Michael Jordan with properly fitted pants…”

Does he own any other kind?

  • Blair Sylvester

That jacket print looks like a tie from the mid 90’s I’m pretty sure my dad has in his closet. I could maybe see that jacket working on a younger guy with jeans. too me it just isn’t his jacket/vest

    • carolie_king

YES, I was thinking the whole thing looked like it was made from a very large tie.

    • demidaemon

Now I know where I’ve seen this print before. It was on my first tie.

  • ailujailuj

PTOPS black. new phraseology is born. TY!!

“Black shirt/purple tie” is just so rarely a combo that works on anyone. And, the hem on those pants……..

  • I’d keep those very shiny shoes – I’m not convinced by light brown shoes with charcoal pants.

  • @Biting Panda

I don’t even know. I’m just happy to see that his head is finally wearing its old face.

    • demidaemon

I thought that too. He’s finally starting to look like himself again. Awards do a body good, I guess.

      • @Biting Panda

        L I V I N

  • thenathanbot

TLo, you should know that you’ve trained an entire army of minions that can now look at a photo, without scrolling down to read the caption, and say, “hey, that’s a great jacket. What’s that, D&G?”

In related news, if I had that jacket, I would never take it off because it is that gorgeous. It would be me on the couch, watching netflix, trying not to get pizza grease on my jacket.

  • boweryboy

Words. They escape me. A least he looks sloppy and not his usual smarmy.

  • Karen Belgrad

Spasmodically… my brain goes to… “Yeah, I hope not sporadically.”… And then I think about how Matthew is such a Baldwin, but when Baldwin was a compliment.

    • Imasewsure

Ah Clueless… good pull – kind of a throwaway line but one of the best for sure 🙂

    • We’ve had such a good run of Clueless triggers lately! That was exactly where I went too.

  • BrianaJC

Can he also shave his face and cut his hair? It doesn’t help that he looks like a used car salesman from the neck up.

  • alyce1213

The jacket is very nice fabric, beautiful, but it’s not the right cut for his body.
In addition to visiting a good tailor to hem his trousers, he needs to stop by at the barber’s for a nice, clean shave.
That said, my money’s on him for the Oscar. He was terrific.

  • marlie

TLo’s assessment is perfect. I would have even been happy with the same pants he has on (hemmed, of course), and a white shirt.

    • kimmeister

Yeah, I’m ok with black pants, maybe even black shirt, but not both at the same time. I can’t give my blessing to brown shoes with black pants though.

    • Tatiana Luján

Your tie should never be lighter than your shirt.

  • mjude

your are correct dear uncles. he kinda is exhausting…no?

  • Sarah

I honestly do not get from whence comes the purple tie. Actually, the vest and jacket are looking like they are MADE out of a tie, on him. I could see someone with different, well, everything pulling off the suit as it is, but not him. And not that way.

  • Kathy

Although he tends to favor these looks, IMO, Matthew looks better in clothing without a sheen.

    • MilaXX

I agree, the only look I have liked is the gold jacket he wore.

      • Kathy

I don’t remember a gold one, but it takes a special man to wear the shiny suits.

        • MilaXX

You know what? I take that back. He had same ill fitted pants problem then as well. I did a search on his name tag. It was the Palm Springs International Film Festival and the jacket was more bronze than gold.

          • Kathy

Found it. I tend to agree with T&Lo, that he looked kind of “mobbed up,” in that one. It’s funny that I don’t like it because I’m usually into sparkly and shiny 🙂 Maybe that’s just where women’s clothes are concerned.

          • demidaemon

It takes a special kind of dude to pull off the shiny and the sparkly. Sometimes it’s Mathhew McConahottie; sometimes, it isn’t.

  • SouthernGirlRena

Sorry, you lost me after potato skins. In the words of Jerry Clower, you’ve done flung a craving on me.

  • Scimommy

Not going to comment on the clothes because I just realized that he’s become the first male celebrity to land on my Irrational Hate List. Oy, Natalie, Keira, and Olivia! Make room!

    • marlie

      Which Olivia?

Who am I kidding… they both annoy me.

      • Scimommy

Wilde. Wait, who’s the other one?

        • Tatiana Luján

          • Scimommy

Oh yeah… She’s not even on my radar.

  • Lilyana_F

Oh hell no to that combo, man! On a side note, I really really dig him and Woody in True Detective.

    • Lower L

Co-sign on “True Detective.” However, I can’t shake an uneasy feeling that the producers will jerk us around the way “The Killing” did. Once bitten, twice shy, I guess.

      • Lilyana_F

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean… What keeps me hopeful is that it’ll be an anthology type format, with each season featuring a different cast of characters and story.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I feel like it’s an “either or” situation. Either jacket or vest (with a different jacket. NOT just a vest. Talk about try the potato skins.).

  • Imasewsure

I like the jacket or the vest – and probably would love them as described by our dear Uncles – but yuck to the presentation by MM…

  • d4divine

  • Monabel

Yes, dears, you are once again, too right. Can you also explain that right hand gesture in the second picture? Pantocrater?

  • He has worn a shiny patterned 3-piece suit recently, hasn’t he? – as well as all of the shiny plain 3-piece suits. So I wonder why he bottled out of this one? I’m not saying it’d be a good idea, just that I am surprised he didn’t go all the way.

  • Sam Smith

I luv the jacket, vest, tie. I think I would stick to black pants and shoes, but maybe a different shirt. Oh, and True Detective is awesome, really enjoying MM in it.

  • nycfan

I think if he had just put on a white shirt, the nearly universal reaction would be wow, what a step up for Matthew! Attaboy. But, alas, he is lounge lizard through and through.

    • conniemd

I don’t mind the black shirt. I like the idea of gray pants, though just to break up the black.

  • JauntyJohn

Well…. I would like the vest OR the jacket more if they were paired with something other than their twinsy pattern partner, since if you match your vest and your jacket I want a suit then, which means matching pants… but Lord, NO to a suit in that pattern — I think it is even beyond the Powers of The Cumming to make work (though if anyone could…).
But yes, TLo, if he loves the suit/vest together, then your suggestion is the only save, imho.

  • I used to think of him as permanently sleazy looking in lieu of Bradley Cooper but I saw him in a couple of recent movies and in True Detective and he’s effing amazing. I don’t know when it happened but he turned out to be an impressive actor. I hope Mr McConaughey would help me in the future by not wearing so many shiny things though.

  • BobStPaul

I think the black trousers, though they need to be properly hemmed, are fine. It really needs a lighter colored shirt and possibly a different tie.

  • Judy_J

At least he looks healthy for a change. Can’t say I love the black hair color on him, though. Too severe.

  • Shawn EH

I feel completely unqualified to judge him. Shades of Southern cowboy chic lurking under everything? He looks like an Old West bartender. At least his suits fit his frame pretty well.

  • AMartel

Nothing will ever beat the Wooderson outfit! (Pink pants, t-shirt, pornstache. L-I-V-I-N. Aaaaalllriiiigt.)

  • allcapsERINN

I wish you guys could start giving them Photoshop makeovers and posting your new-and-improved versions of the outfits at the end. 🙂

  • LipstickForPigs

Didn’t he used to be…attractive? I seem to remember being swoony about him when How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days came out. What the hell happened?!

  • Tatiana Luján

He would end up looking like a tall Bilbo Baggins, but anything is better than this waiter uniform.

  • Scott Cooper

No. The only way that jacket and vest work is with a pair of jeans and a white shirt. Alan Cummings could pull off the complete suit.

  • MikeW_Vegas

I like the jacket and the vest.. but NOT at the same time. in the same fabric, they appear to be competing with each other.

    • Jacob Bowen

I TOTALLY agree! I wish he had done the vest with a grey jacket!

  • ShaoLinKitten

I admit this didn’t reallty bother me all that much. I think it looks fine. Also, WATCH TRUE DETECTIVE. He’s amazing it.

    • Coolekat

He is incredible. Woody Harrelson is, too. Love that show.

      • ShaoLinKitten

Woody is good too, and I love Woody. The thing that makes McConaughey’s work here so amazing to me is that he doesn’t even look like himself in this part. All the smarmy charm is gone, replaced with a quiet intensity. It’s a subtle, transformative portrayal. If he doesn’t get an Emmy I will be very sad.

        • I want to thank you for this comment because you have put your finger on exactly what is great about Matthew on True Detective.

Sure, I love him when he is full of smarmy charm too, like in The Lincoln Lawyer, which was a fabulous movie. But this role for him is a whole other kettle of fish and I really like it.

  • paginatrix

    Yes. And some eye drops.

  • lalahartma

I think he looks better than usual.

  • GorgeousThings

“Quality vocabulary. It’s what we’re all about here at T Lo Pretensions Unlimited.”

    Hahahahahahahahaha! Snort!!!!
There you go with your $10 words again.

I’ll forgive him just because I heart him in Mud and in True Detective.

    • Qitkat

He has surprised me in such a good way in True Detective.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

      Loved him in Mud!

  • Allie Carter

I just assumed there was a tragic pants accident in the car on the way over, forcing him to swap with the limo driver.

  • paintedfish

i’m not falling for your “finger-circle game” attempt.

    • formerlyAnon

  • Dan_In_NYC

Yes charcoal grey pants, yes white shirt – not sold on light brown shoes… like the idea some Kittins had of a boot of some sort – perhaps a slight cowboy nod… or a square toed boot. Also, I don’t LOVE that tie, but it’s not too offensive.

  • IraKi

The print reminds me a bit of my dad’s good pj’s. You know, the ones mum got him for Christmas some years ago that were expensive because of the fabric and he rarely wears them in order not to ruin them but he puts them on on special occasions?

    • alyce1213

I believe my dad may have had the same or similar pj’s. But they never came out of the drawer.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

I like this except for the black shirt or the fact that the shirt and pants are the same color. Reminds me of older women who wear black pants with a black tank and top it off with a colorful blouse a la Marie Barone.

  • decormaven

    Where’s his flair?

    • formerlyAnon

I really don’t think the “real” Matthew & his flair comes out unless the outfit involves boots and jeans – or ratty shorts and god knows what.

      • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Matthew’s flair is only on display when he’s naked and beating a bongo.

        • formerlyAnon

Heh. He & I lived in the same neighborhood when that happened. (Not that I ever saw him, as far as I know. Blocks and blocks away.) Before the bongo incident, my neighbor/babysitter took my kids on walks past his house, sometimes she’d see him doing yard work and her entire WEEK was made. I think after that incident it became too well known where he was living & he moved. She was bummed.

          • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

You know, I’ve always imagined him living in a trailer. I say that in the nicest possible way.

          • formerlyAnon

Ha. He does exude an air that would have me wondering “dyed in the wool Texas frat boy or just dyed in the wool Texas good ol’ boy?” if I met him at any of the bars I no longer go to, back when I did.

  • formerlyAnon

    Yup. You guys are right.
But for him, lately this is good.

  • somebody blonde

I think this would be great with a gray tweed pant and a purple shirt, but maybe I’m more inclined toward flamboyance.

  • AmeliaEve

That foulard print looks like lining fabric to me. It could work on the vest, but on the jacket it just looks like he is wearing it inside out. That vest could work under a charcoal suit with a white shirt and he can keep the purple tie.

  • chof1

Just say no to black shirts.

  • demidaemon

  • trisker

Laughed out loud at the potato skins! Of course you two are absolutely right!!

  • andi56

The lace-ups appear to be very nice, though! That’s my effort to say something nice about an outfit that doesn’t deserve it. Except for the shoes.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Yes, to Uncles T and Lo’s suggestions for what would have made this work. Either take the jacket or the vest, but not both together, and pair with appropriate garments.

  • Terri Terri

    Is that jacket kinda short??

  • rmp6y5

    CVS dye job?

  • CatherineRhodes

He was so good in the movie, I’m willing to forgive his sartorial choices. Gets a “talent pass.”

  • Yes. You are (per usual) absolutely right.

  • veleri

    Oh no he didn’t.

  • fringebenefit

For some reason, “cultivated” five-o’clock shadow really bugs me.

  • TropiCarla

Given the fair number of fellow bitter kitten editors, I would say that it’s your quality vocabulary that puts our asses in the seats, gentlemen.

  • pdquick

  • NBG

Yes to everything. And now I want potato skins.

  • crash1212

Yes. You’ve fixed it. Also, Brother McConaughey is killing it on HBO’s True Detective. He’s got the chops.

    • carnush

Agree on both counts. He’s mesmerizing.

  • jonnyf8

I think the face and hair looks better than it has in a while. A little less oily than usual.

  • Beardslee

I agree, especially about the shirt. I despise black shirts as they are usually deployed.

  • kategs

Keep the pants but hem them, make the shirt charcoal and the tie one of the bronzy colors. the light brown shoes would make my eyes twitch.

  • T F

I do love the vest and jacket. The black isn’t bad but isn’t really making this look sing. That being said, his acting is getting better and better. He is phenomenal in “True Detective”. You boys need to watch it if you haven’t started already.

  • guest2visits

He’s never looked better than when he started in on the fancy men’s jackets (fancy as in textures, colors, patterns).
I like this one also – but the vest is too much. I’m still ok with the dark pants and shirt if the tie is a different shade, like here.

  • Michael Wightman

While I applaud the effort, the truth of the matter is that he’s too thin. Which makes him look old. Too old to wear this outfit, and that’s sad, because he’s a great looking guy. Trade the Jacket and Vest or eat some butter.
