Lupita Nyong’o Awards Season Style Triple Shot

Posted on January 12, 2014

Lupita’s been giving us so much style to talk about that she gets the rare and highly coveted T Lo TRIPLE Shot treatment. Which sounds a little dirty once we typed it out.

Lupita Nyong’o attends DuJour Magazine Cover Party in a Mary Katrantzou dress paired with a Sophia Webster clutch, Paul Andrew pumps, a Jamie Wolf ring, and Dana Rebecca Designs earrings.

WERQ. Bow down, bitches. You’re hearing a dress sing. We should’ve known she’d be a perfect fit for the Katrantzou brand. They should give her a contract.

We’re not entirely on board with the shoes, though. Once again.

Lupita Nyong’o attends the 2014 AFI Awards Luncheon in a Carolina Herrera dress paired with Manolo Blahnik pumps and Jamie Wolf jewelry.

Gorgeous once again. That’s a beautiful dress and fabric. Carolina Herrera should give her a contract. And as always, we find ourselves actively disliking the shoes. In this case, they’re really distracting. Whoever’s responsible for her style really knows how to pick clothes for her, but in our opinion, doesn’t quite know how to accessorize her.

And just as we found ourselves wondering if she gets a little tired of wearing bright prints…

Lupita Nyong’o attends the W Magazine celebration of The ‘Best Performances’ Portfolio and The Golden Globes in a Proenza Schouler dress paired with Jennifer Meyer and EF Collection jewelry and a Proenza Schouler clutch and shoes.

The coat’s fine and all, but the real showpiece here is the dress, of course.

We think sometimes we and quite a few people in the style world default to the idea that dark-skinned women should wear bright and bold colors all the time. While it’s true that those colors look great on them, we think it tends to shoo such women away from wearing black, which is a timeless and universal standard chic color. We think this dress is a really fabulous way for her to turn the LBD on its head. Once again, she’s making an outfit work in a way that many other wearers couldn’t manage. Proenza Schouler should give her a contract.

She looks fabulous in everything. WERQs all around!

  • teensmom99

Not just the rare triple shot but the rare triple WERQ (that didn’t sound dirty at all).

  • ms_kat

Her makeup is fantastic. I love the gold eye with the very chic black dress.

The middle dress, with it’s offset front seam, is sort of distracting as if she were fighting a strong gust. It’s a lovely cut and fabric, but there’s something odd about it.

    • fursa_saida

Oh, see, I like that–it’s like she’s standing on a mountain with a breeze passing over her, especially in the first picture. She is the Chosen One in a moment of freedom. Nature has spoken. Like Pocahontas’s hair blowing in the wind in the Disney movie. (I may or may not have spent afternoons in my backyard as a kid facing into the wind trying to get my hair to do that. It didn’t work.)

  • jilly_d

    Exquisite.

  • lexilexi

I cannot wait to see what she wears to the GG tonight and the (probable) Oscars!

    • Jecca2244

I just noticed she was the longtime style assistant to Annabel Tollman who died quite suddenly last year. I wonder if she was working solo before that…lovely work.

  • oklund

I can’t get behind the skirt pattern on the Katrantzou. Something about it screams “acid wash denim circa 1990″. The black dress is calling out for accessories. But Lupita is, of course, stunning as always.

    • Stella Zawistowski

Me too. Sometimes Mary K works for me, and sometimes it’s just a bridge too far (see what I did there?). This is one of those “a little too much going on” frocks IMO.

She, on the other hand…I’m about to say no one should wear a dress with a sternum cutout except Lupita Nyong’o.

  • LJCdoc

    She is just perfection.

  • Spreecord

And with that 3rd outfit, I’m pretty sure a half-dozen theses entitled “Lupita Nyong’o's hair as a political statement” were born. God, she’s fucking impeccable.

    • fursa_saida

LOVE the hair. It makes me think of Janelle Monae, a little–not the specific style, but the sort of Afro-dandyism statement.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m imagining Janelle Monae and Lupita N’yongo on the same stage, and somehow I think the world would explode with so much fierceness together.

        • fursa_saida

          RIGHT?!

  • JenJW

I haven’t seen her film yet, but all your praise for her makes me want to.

    • MilaXX

OMG! lease do. There’s this one scene towards the end… I’m not gonna spoil it for you, but t just makes me cry. I want ALL the good things for her.

      • SRQkitten

Second Milaxx on this! Not an easy film to watch but so well done and acted!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

She has a couple of scenes in 12 Years A Slave that are absolutely shattering. I too want ALL the good things for Ms. N’yongo.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The coat goes too Republican candidate wife for me. I unreservedly love everything else. And Lord bless anyone who can wear #2 pencil yellow without looking jaundiced.

  • thecitysleeps

She’s so beautiful. And three gorgeous dresses she’s giving life too. All the shoes are horrible though. Seems like that shape just doesn’t go on her feet, so to speak.

  • lbl

She’s beautiful and elegant and wears clothes so well, but I really can’t with the consistently awful (yes, AWFUL) shoe choices. What is that about? Fine if she likes simple pumps, but quit it with the suede and velvet. They’re so distracting and heavy looking with everything she wears.

Hope she does well this awards season and that she actually gets opportunities afterward.

    • wisdomy

It does seem like the majority of her shoes are straight-up bridesmaid.

    • cocohall

I’m starting to wonder if she has some sort of foot issue where she has told her stylists to use only one basic shoe, because she does default to the simple pump that does nothing for her otherwise quite chic outfits. It’s hard to believe someone could embrace so much that is good and interesting in fashion from the ankle up, but ignore her footsies.

      • petal malaika

Totally agree with you cocohall. I’ve been wondering what gives with her choice of footwear and also concluded there must be something we are missing – like a foot ailment or something. Lupita has a lovely body, skin tone, demeanour and most of her red carpet outfits have been great so far – except for the Black Proenza dress above which I’m not a fan of at all. Whoever’s styling Lupita’s shoe wardrobe needs to re-think things.

  • Spicytomato1

Love all the looks but the Carolina Herrera is the one that really sings for me. I cannot imagine anyone else looking as amazing in it. So lovely.

  • Nicholas

I need Lupita Sundays in my life.

  • bellafigura1

Absolutely stunning, she wears the hell out of clothes. WERQ WERQ WERQ. I must point out that FANTASTIC part in her hair in the last pictures. It is so cute and eye-catchy and original and striking.

  • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

Is there anyone who should not give her a contract? I THINK NOT. :)

That eye makeup with the last outfit is so.amazing.

She is incredibly beautiful. We could all do with regular Lupita Sundays. :)

    • Evan

So true! But I’m not sure I want her getting a contract for Stella, Marchesa, Pilotto or the current Christian Dior season!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Yes, Lupita Sundays, certainly now that we are in awards season, should be a must here. It seems as if she can wear anything and mamke it look good, if not great.

    • snarkykitten

Can we have Fan Bingbing Saturdays, too?

  • MilaXX

Well the good news is Mui Mui has indeed given her a contract, but I’m going to assume Uncles T & Lo know that. I adore her and agree with the shoe critiques in the first 2 pictures. She’s also joined social media and is just as darling there as she is in print. I especially like the instagram of her pronouncing her name. It’s so beautiful. it sounds like she’s singing.

    • Nicholas

That’s fantastic news, I’m going to love her in Miu Miu.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Miu Miu seems like an odd fit to me. She’s not that whimsical or quirky in her style choices, though I’m sure their silhouettes will look fabulous on her figure and the color palette will sing against her skin.

    • Sobaika

I thought Miu Miu was a slightly odd choice for – she’s a bit too elegant and too much of a woman for the brand. But still, fantastic news for her. I want her to have all the things.

      • MilaXX

It’s the Spring 2014 campaign along with Elle Fanning & Elizabeth Olsen. From the few pictures I’ve seen it works. The only quibble from me are the typical clunky Mui Mui shoe that only Elle Fanning seems to truly love. Even then I think they work for the print ads. I just don’t want her attempting them on the RC.

  • decormaven

Oh, such happiness on Golden Globes Sunday! I’ll be revisiting these lovely looks through the am/pm, because you know we’re going to see some trainwreck looks at the awards show. Bowing down to every shot here- gorgeous.

  • jw_ny

Love the first 2 looks. The 3rd tho…idk, kind of dull. Perhaps a bolder lip and some diamonds/sparkle somewhere would help.

  • cmb92191

It’s not fair she is that gorgeous!

  • Judy_S

Adorable, glamorous, and goddess (somehow divine doesn’t work here, gotta have that Germanic word), respectively.
Friday evening at dinner with my husband I found myself amusing him while waiting for the main course by showing him the magazine shoot you (TLo) featured that day. She is just so worth looking at.

  • sagecreek

The second dress is my favorite!

I don’t like any of the shoes. Maybe I’m cranky today.

  • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

I just love that she’s wearing a coat in winter. Shockingly practical! She looks fierce in three different ways here: pretty fierce, sexy fierce, and space queen fierce. I wish she had more jewelry in the second look and different shoes in the first, but dayum girl can wear clothes. I dig her side part in the last look. I am always envious of the sculptural possibilities people of African descent have with their hair (since mine is superfine, goes flat at the slightest provocation, and turns into a frizzball nightmare if I do anything more than brush it with a wide-tooth comb while it’s wet.)

  • CJ Michalak

Were this post an episode of Friends, it would be titled, “the one where TLo prove that Lupita should be signed to a/all major label(s) & all he bitter kittens agree”.

  • quiltrx

That Katrantzou is GIVING ME LIFE this morning!
She REALLY knows how to wear clothes–and agreed, seeing her in them makes you want to buy the clothes. You watch, stores are going to start having mannequins that look just like her.

  • David Calder

If I looked this good in clothes, I would wear clothes all the time.

  • filmcricket

Don’t like the third look at all. Sorry to see that she’s succumbed to sternum-itis.

  • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Miss Lady is the Queen of the Wrong Shoe. But those dresses are fantastic on her.

    • ballerinawithagun

That was my only issue with that dress.

  • http://www.avclub.com/users/genevieve-koski,4300/ Genevieve Koski

She looks gorgeous, of course, but I’m starting to wonder if she has an aversion to jewelry or if her stylist is just dropping the ball in that department or what. She always wears tiny little button earrings, rarely wears necklaces, and never any sort of bangle or rings. Her looks are so dramatic, I guess the thinking is that jewelry would distract from them, but man, would I love to see her rock some big ol earrings sometime.

  • Verascity

From the ankles up, that first one already deserves to be in the year’s best. When December rolls around.

  • Diego!

Triple WERQ and I don’t mind the shoes at all! PERFECTION!

  • SRQkitten

SQUEEE! . I was hoping for a double shot, but of course you boys are so right, she is one of the few deserving of the triple shot! That WERQ is the dress I was hoping you’d feature, love it and how she wears it.

  • Fred Vaughn

Homegirl was born to wear Carolina!

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Really tiny earrings seem to be very fashionable at the moment, and I am not really a fan. Other than that, I adore the first two dresses on her and LOVE the way she’s mixed up her hairdo for the 3rd look.

  • Evan

    Give her ALL the contracts!!!

  • Little_Olive

I’m gonna be a party pooper here and differ on #1, which I think is only working because of her skin cloring (mostly I don’t like the dress itself). She can go further.

  • CB

Her makeup is always so spot on. Her eye makeup on the third look is absolutely slaying me.

  • ThesisMonkey

who needs accessories with THAT FACE

  • Janet B

    She delights me.

  • Glam Dixie

I’m loving looks 1 and 2 but not too fond of dress number 3 and not because it’s black but because it’s ugly. And yes, the shoes are a problem in all of them.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

OMG-that first dress is simply.to.die.for. Love, love, love. I like all three looks. Yes, the shoes for the second look are distracting, but otherwise, Lupita has fast become one of my personal fashion crushes.

  • Nicola Anna Molly Page

Amazing. Even though I chuckled at the image of a bridge going over her breasts in the first dress.

  • boweryboy

The last look is my favorite, and I’m not entirely sold on the dress.

  • Jaeda Laurez

She’s so dope. Her beat is flawless, and the dresses, especially the Katrantzou require an extra level that most starlets just don’t have.

  • marlie

I don’t like the shaping of her hair around the hairline in the first two pictures, but I LOVE her hair in the last set of photos. I like all three looks; three distinct “vibes,” and she’s rocking them all (except for the shoes). And her makeup is always lovely, but it’s outstanding in the last look.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I love her line. Chiwitel needs to ask her who her barber is lol.

      • SpillinTea

        Yassss!!!

  • alyce1213

I love her in #1 and 2; #3 not so much (I just don’t like the dress). I adore her hair in #3. So cool.

  • Lilyana_F

She just makes clothes sing on her, that’s a gift. WERQ, girl!

  • Zaftiguana

Oh, LOVE her hair in the last one. Her classic, close-cropped ‘do is always fabulous of course, but I like to see her having some fun with it and doing something with a little shape.

  • akprincess72

I WANT that Mary Katrantzou dress & I am typically not a fan. Ms. Lupita makes it SING.

  • PastryGoddess

Her head game in the last photo is just fierce!

  • SpillinTea

Yasssss at that New Millennium Gumby haircut in the last set of photos. WERQ diva!

  • unbornfawn

    Stunning. Bowing down.

  • mmebam

DEAR GOD, CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP HER POOR FEET? Such perfection from the ankle up. It’s a shame.

  • Imasewsure

Don’t like either of the last two but the Herrera is one of my favorites on her EVER… shoes are awful as usual!!

  • LaSylphide

The real stunner is #3; gorgeous cut and draping with no fussiness. I would have liked a little touch of color somewhere, though. Love her hair in this one; gives the look a little zip.

I especially like that with all the dresses she keeps the earrings low key – her beauty doesn’t need much accessorizing, which would just be a distraction. Adore the ones with the LBD.

  • NinjaCate

But in all seriousness, if she doesn’t get all the contracts, I’m going to be very upset.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

The last look just killed me dead. When I come into my fortune I’m stealing her makeup people and her stylist. Love you Lupita, but some of us could use a little more assistance.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

I love the shoes in the first look. I think they really complete the look. Hate the 2nd shoes. And I actually think the Proenza dress is a bit over-worked. The first look is the WERQ!

  • Nicole Little

Each one better than the last.

  • joything

Now that my workout regimen is showing results, I am fascinated by her arms. What does she do for that lovely elongated shape?

  • murt

She always has such gorgeous makeup too – love that she takes risks with her makeup as well as her clothes.

  • CeeRich

She looks flawless in everything. WERQ Lupita!

  • Anna_Cecilia

Along with good friends, cupcakes and cute guys, you can never have too much Lupita gorgeousness in your life.

  • nannypoo

I don’t like the coat and I don’t like her hair in the last look but those dresses are fabulous on her. She can wear anything and make it look beautiful.

  • ashtangajunkie

Girl could show up in her dressing gown and get a ‘WERQ.’ She’s such a stunner.

  • Danielle

I was nodding in agreement until I hit the third dress, Glorious!

  • Kent Roby

    So, class, in conclusion:
_________ should give her a contract. Note: There are many correct answers.

    • demidaemon

Luckily, there are only a few incorrect ones, and any BK should know them by heart.

  • Shawn EH

I love the more severe hairstyle for the LBD.

  • LeelaST

Love the second dress. The Proenza Schouler looks as though it’s on backwards (wonder what the back looks like?)

  • formerlyAnon

She’s amazing, and so is whomever dresses her. I’d give dress #2 the WERQ, though the shoes are the wrong blue. If you had to do blue it should have matched the dress. ETA: Though dress #3 is growing on me, helped along by the eye makeup and hair.

  • Louise Bryan

You don’t want too many contracts out on this lovely lady, now do you?

  • Sabin

I have never actually done the gasp before today. But this is three for three. Just, wow.

  • Demeter

Doesn’t it bother anyone that the coat is too short for the dress? And isn’t the coat too sporty to go with that dress?

  • p_capet

    wow
