Lupita Nyong’o in Cushnie et Ochs on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”

Posted on January 23, 2014

Time for your Daily Dose of Lupita, darlings. You didn’t think we’d forgotten, did you?

Lupita Nyong’o makes an appearance on the “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” show at Rockefeller Center in New York City to promote her new movie “12 Years a Slave” in a Cushnie et Ochs ensemble paired with Paul Andrew heels and Kwiat jewelry.

Cushnie et Ochs Spring 2014 Collection

That girl can make a purple sing. We think we’re on board with the matchy-but-not-quite shoes. There’s just enough of a difference to make them interesting. And the shape is gorgeous on her foot. Of course we love that she’s rocking the ladypants (and making the whole ensemble look so effortlessly chic), but think what we love most is that she didn’t succumb to the “swallow my feet” long hem trend that so many ladystars tend to follow. You can actually see her feet! When she’s walking and everything!

    • Introspective

She looks regal and yet effortless at the same time. Love.

      • formerlyAnon

Yes. Like she’s too cool to fuss.

      • Gayer Than Thou

Someone has gotten her money’s worth out of her Pilates class, that’s for sure.

    • ashtangajunkie

      I love that first photo!

      • jennifromcali

I LOVE the third one down (of her – fourth photo including the model). Such joy!

    • marlie

My only quibble is that I wish she had a bold accessory on somewhere.

      • Glam Dixie

Yes, that would definitely up the wow factor.

      • Sobaika

Some giant diamond studs in her ears – can’t you just see it?

      • SugarSnap108

Yep, def needs a dash of jewelry. I don’t care for the cut of the top – it’s just blah. So I’d like something shiny to distract my eye (though, OK, her face/smile are doing a pretty good job of that.)

        • MilaXX

It’s weird. Seeing this live last night I thought it was perfect. Seeing it in stills I want a cuff. Also the shoes looked darker on tv. In fact I thought they were black last night and they appear to be blue here in stills.

          • Trent

She was so charming on the show last night. Loved her description of her brother as “living life on an exclamation point” and telling Jimmy the correct way to pronounce her last name when he asked (and I was so wrong about the pronunciation, too).

      • foodycatAlicia

A hint of turquoise somewhere – maybe a skinny belt?

      • decormaven

Not sure if she could have pulled off the necklace shown in the runway look, but a bold cuff would have been nice. However, the rich color of the fabric shines on its own. She emanates effortless grace.

        • marlie

I think she could have pulled off the necklace, but I don’t think she necessarily needed *that* as an accessory. Maybe some bold earrings or something.

          • decormaven

Bold earrings – good call! She still looks fab, though.

    • Glam Dixie

I like it, don’t love it. It looks better on the model, but there is not doubt the color is gorgeous against her skin.

      • MoreShoes

I’m with you on this one. I actually prefer it on the model. And something is bothering me about the colour of her shoes.

    • DTLAFamilies

I don’t like this when she’s standing but she looks great on the couch.

    • twigg

I love the color, but I think the outfit is boring.

      • random_poster

I agree. I think she’s set the bar high. She doesn’t look bad by any means, but this is a let down.

      • anneland

Our boys have such a fashion crush they see everything she wears through a haze of cartoon hearts in the air. I don’t like this one that much either. Mostly I don’t think the top is great on her. The color and shoes are good.

    • Constant Reader

This outfit would be boring on anyone else, but she’s rocking the shit out of it. Gotta give her credit for that. I agree with the other BKs that I wish she were wearing a bold cuff bracelet or other bold accessory.

    • Constant Cat

She was meant for…all the colors! She’s Like a Rainbow playing full blast in my head.

      • capybara_cafe

Seriously, I have yet to see her in a color that didn’t look amazing on her!

    • hughman

“Please be a jumpsuit, please be a jumpsuit…”

      DOH! And yet, she’s flawless.

      • demidaemon

I was actually hoping it would be a jumpsuit, just because I knew she could rock it. And rock it she did, better than 90% of ladies on the RC.

      • e jerry powell

        I was confused, myself.

    • Sarah

Jewelries please. My purple pants are very, very ashamed of themselves right now. They wish they were as cool as Lupita’s. They are not :(

      • demidaemon

I love your plural usage of “jewelries.”

    • @Biting Panda

Eh. I don’t love how the top drapes. I’m sad at the absence of jewelry and I don’t like the shoes paired with this particular outfit. Sorry, Kittens. Sorry, Uncles.

      • Sarah

Yeah, I don’t like the top either. It reads jammytime. The shoes, I love, but I’m not sure about them with this outfit.

        • anotherkate

I wish my jammytime looked that chic! (And props to you for the word jammytime).

      • Kimbolina

Yeah something about the way the top is falling, especially when she’s sitting, doesn’t look right. I wish it had a bit more of a drape like on the model.

    • Belvane

She should require her minions to always carry a deep blue backdrop whenever she wears purple. The combo is stunning.

    • BobStPaul

Everything about this woman, including her posture, exudes class.

    • Trickytrisha

It’s okay. Color is fab-u-lous on her. Can’t say I like the bodice though… higher cut would have been a tad better, I think. This outfit would have been the perfect setting for some amazing bling too.

    • lillyvonschtupp

      Once again, she nails it!

    • Andrew Schroeder

      Needs a fabulous jeweled belt.

    • capybara_cafe

Her skin tone is so amazing. She can wear such a wide array of colors. I don’t care much for the outfit itself, but the color is amazing on her, and if anyone should be rocking a tank top, it’s those arms, right there. Huge girl crush.

    • ojosazules

She looks gorgeous in her purple pants, and I love the shoes, too. She doesn’t really need much jewelry. Gilding a lily.

    • intheyear2000

Okay, but the *real* story is that she wore this to a BASKETBALL GAME later that night. Everyone else is in jeans/t-shirts and she just strolls in looking like THIS. Can you imagine? (you don’t have to imagine, you have Google)

    • SierraDelta

Regal posture. And her hands are beautiful — long-fingered, slender, elegant, expressive.

    • ailujailuj

perfection… just love her to pieces. she was also great on the show if you didn’t catch it (hulu it) and mentioned that both her parents are from the Congo but she was born in Mexico…thus her name! And he also showed two clips – one from the film, which was awesome and almost made me cry, dammit, and the other was of her equallyfuckingadorable little brother who “lives life as an exclamation point!!!!”

      • DeebaCee

        Her parents are from Kenya

        • ailujailuj

Strange – I don’t know why I typed that! Had just watched a wildlife docu about Congo so had it on my brain I guess. Thanks for the correction.

    • Charles

The lady gives me LIFE. Also, I’m never sure why I’m gayer when I comment here than in real life.

      • ailujailuj

heh… I think we can all say that.

      • Jacob Bowen

GIRRLLLL it’s a little freeing to let the SUPER gay out when you can.

    • A.W.

This is not great. It needs accessories. I think you’re letting your Lupita bias cloud your judgement in this case!

      • ShaoLinKitten

I don’t love it either, but you have to admit, she elevates an outfit that would make most women look like a Violet Beauregard from Willie Wonka.

        • Aurumgirl

It isn’t a huge deal, but it is simple and elegant. It fits her perfectly, and the colour is just so intense and regal. It really doesn’t need much more than the shoes–otherwise it really would be “too much”. Sometimes it’s better to stop at just enough and not go further.

    • anotherkate

I have such a fashion crush on her! She just looks so damn put together and confident. She’s doing so many looks that are well outside the standard wheelhouse of a new “It” actress–bright turquoise! Ladypants! Not a bandage dress in sight (unless we count that Stella McCartney one, which was the literal texture and color of a bandage…which is actually a little cheeky and hilarious, now that I’m thinking about it). LOVE HER.

    • kimmeister

Tickets to the gun show! I wonder who would win in an arm wrestle between her and Shelly O?

      • filmcricket

Now I want them to do that for charity.

      • foodycatAlicia

Shelly – she’d want it more.

    • Imasewsure

I don’t like it much at all

    • alyce1213

That first shot of her walking out is simply amazing– what a glorious smile.
But truthfully, the outfit is underwhelming — the tank top is just meh, the trousers fit fine, and she needs great accessories.

    • Synnamin

girlfriend has some GUNS on her, too. That shade of purple is made for her.

    • flamingoNW

      Dang! She looks awesome

    • GeoDiva

Is there any color that she can’t wear?

    • Carly Clement

For once, I am not actually loving this colour on her… I think the colour is a bit lifeless, but if the suit was in a bolder purple and not so lifeless I would be on board! I also agree maybe a bold cuff or two would have been nice to see… also the fit of the top is off… there is just something not quiet right in this look!

    • jennifromcali

Wait! She’s 30????? There is no question in my mind that this girl made a deal with the devil – all that talent, poise, grace, that body, that smile, that skin color…

    • MilaXX

      Dear Juilia Roberts,
This is how you wear a jumpsuit.

    • Boop

      God, I love her.

    • ellatheingenue

      how is she real

    • filmcricket

You can only just barely see her feet when she’s walking – I still think the pants are just a titch too long. And I agree with the other kittens that this called for some bling – either big earrings, or a cocktail ring, or, to quote the Fug Girls, NAB. The shoes are amazing and I want them.

    • ellatheingenue

she and Fan Bingbing should be best friends

    • LadyLuck777

Wow. The model pales in comparison. And those arms even make Shelly O jealous!

    • Jacob Bowen

Not in LOVE with the top, but she is so beautiful she could sell me plain white t-shirts…let alone THOSE ARMS! Madonna is WEEPING because her arms will NEVER be that great!

    • bellafigura1

This is a mega WERQ for me. She is owning her moment, utterly. Knows exactly what’s she’d doing and that is so great to watch. Show me Lupita in a parking lot, hurry! Dying to see it!

    • Lily-Rygh

Miss Lupita apparently went straight from this taping to a New York Knicks game, IN THE SAME OUTFIT, thereby confirming the collective suspicion of kittens everywhere that she is, in fact, not a mere mortal but some divine space alien sent here to show us Earth bitches how it’s DONE.

(That’s way too much information for one sentence. Sorry.)

    • AnneElliot

Gorgeous — I love the shoes, and bless her for showing them off. However, I do agree with the other BKs that it needs some chunky jewelry. Not crazy about the choker on the model, but something at the neck, or huge earrings — some piece of statement jewelry. But I’m quibbling.

    • HVM

It’s refreshing to see a celebrity not sitting awkwardly on the couch and pulling down a micromini to protect their modestly.

    • Maryanne525

      I cannot get enough.

    • livesarah

I was prepared to hate it because it’s Cushnie et Ochs… So I suppose it was a pleasant surprise! Also it is SO GOOD to see a woman wear a garment on TV that doesn’t force her to contort herself in order to avoid showing bum cheek/good china/belly rolls once she sits down. I can see her feeling like herself in this thing, even though it’s a tiny bit boring.

    • lunchcoma

This is the best-executed pantsuit I’ve seen all year.

Though I still disapprove on them on the grounds of even famous people needing to pee.

    • formerlyAnon

She looks FABULOUS. I like this kind of ensemble, though. Only way I might like it better if the top was some kind of fancy button down in the same sexy fabric, but I could be wrong. Given that she’s on a talk show, the top is fine, without jewelry.

    • Anna

If WERQing was easy, everyone would do it. This woman truly is in her own category.

    • gefeylich

This woman is a vision. She really knows which colors set off her beautiful face and skin to perfection.

    • cheekypinky

Of course Lupita makes a jumpsuit work. They are not for the likes of mere mortals.

    • Diego!

WERQ! That purple ensemble is STUNNING! I also love the shoes. Lady Lupita was born for fashion!

    • alliekat9090

For those who are saying she needs accessories, just NO. This is perfection.

    • numenah

The color doesn’t offer enough contrast with her skin tone, imo. Not crazy about it, although she’s always beautiful.

    • TLJezebel

Are the top and pants two different shades of purple, or am I just blinded by that million-watt smile?

    • In_Stitches

I don’t know, it kind of looks like fancy overalls to me. I mean, she can work that silhouette and she can work that color, but the fact that the top and pants are in slighty different shades or purple is really bugging me. Those pants have a bit of red in their tone whereas the top is colder. I wish they were either the exact same or pretty far apart.

      • Gatto Nero

I noticed the color discrepancy, too. Just off enough to look *off*, and not intentional.
But I didn’t notice this while watching the segment on TV.

    • Jessica Freeman

Sorry but no. No accessories, this is just boring and ill fitting on the top. Master Lupita, we know you can do much much better.

    • carnush

      OMG this woman. Perfection.

    • sweetlilvoice

I don’t want to see this movie (I don’t have a strong stomach when it comes to this genre) but she is so fabulous I may have to redbox it. The purple is lovely with her skin and I do love her hair–very sexy.

      • sagecreek

I want to see it, but we’ve made the decision to wait on the DVD — like you, I find this kind of thing upsetting, and may need to take a break.

    • MoHub

I’m so caught up in her smile that I have to work to see the dress, which is gorgeous.

      • Jessica Freeman

So completely caught up that you don’t even realize she is wearing pants.

        • MoHub

So they are. And very elegant pants, tool.

    • mjude

    • Patrick Cleary

It may have been planned that way, maybe not, but the purple against the blue chair is totally fabulous.

    • nycfan

Also, shows some foresight regarding the venue (how it looks sitting down/personal comfort not holding a skirt or shirt closed).

    • Lee

This makes me want to buy a purple jumpsuit, and trust me, it would not look like this. I love this and I love the shoes with it, too. It looks like the shoes have a little bling on them…wish I could see more!

    • RussellH88

It’s nice to have a woman of color, especially a woman with dark skin showing how that skin tone can really make clothes look amazing.

On a pale starlet, this would look like a running errands outfit, but on Lupita it instantly becomes “Yes mortals, I’ll grace you with my presence”

    • Nancer

Is she even human? Because it is rare that anyone nails style so perfectly and makes it look effortless! She is my new lady-crush. I need to go see her movie. :]

    • SewingSiren

Lovely shade of violet. I wouldn’t mind a fabulous bib style necklace. But she doesn’t need it either.

    • Rand Ortega

She’s made purple a whole new color. WERQ!
(microscopic quibble– A diamond bracelet would have sent this through the stratosphere!)

    • World of Sass

Dear god she’s fabulous. It almost hurts. And hell yeah for wearing pants that look both comfortable and to-die-for elegant to a gig like this. Too often the ladystars go for an ultrasexy-cocktail-hour vibe and, to me, it reads too much as, “Please focus on my hotness and not my personality.”

      • Gatto Nero

Yes — and then they sit down and start tugging at the hem and neckline to keep all their body parts from spilling out.
This is a breath of fresh air.

    • KinoEye

Wow. Is there any color that doesn’t look spectacular on her? Simple and bold. Gorgeous. Also, that HAIR. How I wish I had the face for hair that short. I wonder, though, how she might look with a lady afro? I love that style for African-American women. I bet it’s hard to manage though.

    • NDC_IPCentral

I haven’t scrolled through the comments so I don’t know whether others here mentioned this already, but there was a lovely article about her in the Arts Section of Thursday’s New York Times that discussed her background (Yale drama, Kenyan) and her approach to her work. Not only is Ms. Nyong’o attractive, she is quite intelligent and very grounded. She’s admirable in many, many ways.

    • Danielle

Girl’s got some damn fine arms.

    • boweryboy

She looks gorgeous, but I’m not loving the color or the outfit itself.

    • Shawn EH

      Purple WERQ!

    • Akemi

      LOVE HER

    • Jeff Warhurst

      That body is sick!

    • Drunken Housewife

She looks better in designer clothing than the models do. My favorite is that blue dress with the insanely elaborate neckline from last week, but I don’t think anyone has ever looked better in purple pants than Lupita. Can’t wait to see what she does for the Oscars. All other stylists must be raging with envy.

    • sagecreek

Great fit, great color, and look at that smile!

    • Gatto Nero

Just watched her segment on Fallon. Aside from her stunning looks (see anywhere on this site), she is unfailingly charming and gracious, even through what is probably a grueling promotional schedule. I admire that most about her.

    • melanie0866

And she could sit down comfortably. That shows forethought.

    • UsedtobeEP

I am sure someone else has said this but I love that you can’t see her bottom when she sits down. Comfy and pretty!

    • Qitkat

Damn girl! But I wish there were a bracelet cuff.

    • lalahartma

Yes, I would love to see more pants during these kinds of appearances!

    • traceyishere

She would look glam in a paper bag.

    • Sunraya

I am missing some jewelry. It is just too plain.

    • JP

She is always so freaking gorgeous!

    • jjjoy

      BOW DOWN

    • LaSylphide

Why am I suddenly feeling hopelessly inadequate? Oh, right. I just saw another Lupita photo. Could someone give this woman a zit or something? Anything to mar that perfection so the rest of us don’t feel like 15 year old mattresses left out in a rain storm for two weeks? Please?

    • Dagney

      Muscular arms FTW!

    • LambeeBaby

Great color and shape but it needs some baubles.

    • maggiemaybe

Damn, she is gorgeous! Chic, comfortable, ladylike. Just love her.
