Lupita Nyong’o for Dazed & Confused Magazine

Posted on January 16, 2014

Here is your Pretty of the Day, darlings. We are shutting our damn mouths because there’s nothing else to say but DAMN:

“12 Years a Slave” star Lupita Nyong’o covers the February 2014 issue of Dazed & Confused magazine photographed by Sharif Hamza and styled by Robbie Spencer.

On deciding to be an actor/her role model: “The first time I thought I could be an actor was seeing The Color Purple. Whoopi Goldberg looked like me, she had hair like mine, she was dark like me. I’d been starved for images of myself. I’d grown up watching a lot of American TV. There was very little Kenyan material, because we had an autocratic ruler who stifled our creative expression.”

And also congrats to Miss Lupita for her Best Supporting Actress Oscar nom. Girl is going to hit that Oscars red carpet and SHUT. IT. DOWN. Can’t wait! Julia Roberts is shitting herself!

    • Donyelle

      All hail Lupita, Queen Glamazon

    • Rand Ortega

The newest of our Alien Overlords has just arrived.

    • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

oh my gawd. the next time they close crop a woman of color on a fashion mag or come up with some bullshit like only skinny white blonds sell covers, someone needs to toss this editorial down in front of them. I can’t even find the words to express how she is shutting it the fuck down. she glows.

      • Evan

How long before she’s on the cover of Vogue? Placing bets now. Though I doubt it will be as artistic as this.

        • Rand Ortega

If she wins the Oscar, September. If she doesn’t, January.

          • Sobaika

God, I hope you’re right – I want her in Vogue so badly.

            • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I feel like there should be a Sacred Heart candle for this…

          • sarajgh

Anna will never give her the coveted September cover sadly.

            • liam neeson

au contraire- anna’s been dressing her as of late!

            • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Really? I had no idea. That may bode well!

          • Donyelle

OMG The September issue would be a HUGE coup.

        • SpillinTea

And since Andre Leon Talley isn’t there, never…

    • algaechick

The internet is now closed for the day, because Ms. Lupita shut. it. down.
      (Her last shot=fantabulousness)

      • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Does a SIT outrank a WERQ? I think it must, because something has to so we can give them to Lupita by the metric tonne.

    • lexilexi

Only she can look fabulous in the very bizarre assortment of clothes.

      • Sobaika

That eye makeup! Show me a starlet who can work glossy colorful palettes like that!

        • SewingSiren

No starlet to be sure. I can only think of models from 40 years ago ,such as Twiggy and Veruschka, that would even come close.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Not a starlet, but Whitney Houston, in the Wanna Dance With Somebody video. I begged my mother to buy me an eyeshadow palette with those shades, and hit my first realisation that there are colours that look better on a brown skin.

      • RebeccaKW

Those rubber sandal things…she doesn’t look good in them, but she doesn’t look ridiculous either. And she’s probably the only person that could make you say “well, I guess they aren’t THAT bad.”

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

That skin! That glowing skin! Like melting chocolate – makes all those colors on her frocks pop. I bow down to her. She’s ravishing.

      • ailujailuj

Yes – her ACTUAL skin tone… unlike vanity fair’s vanilla lens!

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I really don’t think it is her actual skintone – I think they have made her quite a lot darker. It’s still a nice contrast from the whitening treatment a lot of covers give, but don’t be deceived, this is every bit as much about retouching and artifice as any other cover.

          • ailujailuj

You might be right – those colors are pretty saturated. But that seems a little more honest than the washout.
ETA: more honest? less dishonest? something to bitch about while my toast is toasting?

      • another_laura

Almost makes me consider switching teams.

      • Terri Ellis

Totally agree, her skin is so perfect it’s almost as if she is some classical polished statue. No blemishes and such a gorgeous rich color! Maybe she will help to halt the trend of all these non-white girls (ahem Kim K.) who want to be blonde/orange.

    • Scimommy

Beautiful, talented, and (I just watched her on Kimmel) NOT ANNOYING. I hereby designate her my first ever girl crush.

      • ailujailuj

she was brilliant and charming and engaging and made a list of all the celebs she wanted to flirt with on the R.C.!

        • lillyvonschtupp

She just might give Clooney a headspin.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I can’t even deal right now. She must dip herself in a vat of cocoa butter daily- i love it.

      • Sarah

She is definitely hydrated. I feel dry and scaly just looking at her, and I use lotion twice a day. Unbelievable!

      • MilaXX

        Cocoa butter and unicorn tears.

    • Evan

Wow. That’s one of the best covers I’ve seen in a long time. And that last shot too.

ETA: She’s also making some seriously ugly clothes WERQ! Don’t like the middle pic though.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

I am offended that they dared to put her feet in sandals that are way to big for them. Hooray for flats in a fashion spread, but boo to disrespecting Lupita feet!

    • ashtangajunkie

Seeing these photos makes me realize how much we’re missing out on with most editorials and covers. Actual, honest-to-goodness art.

    • jilly_d

She is almost gorgeous enough to overcome that hideous D&G “dress”. Almost. That thing is an abomination.

      • ailujailuj

those rubber sandals are 3 sizes too big. but I like the dress on the model. AND THE BELT – want one.

      • Isabel

        Derelicte!

      • Aurumgirl

There are too many abominations in these photos to count, but she pulls all of it off. Even though shockingly hideous supersized tevas.

        • kimmeister

For me the worst are the athletic leg warmers on the cover.

    • TeacherH

Lupita is making those Prada models weep. They look like crap in comparison to her.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m not a big fan of Prada, but Lupita is making those clothes work so much more than the runway models.

      • AudreysMom

My thought exactly. Often the clothes look better on the models because well, they are models and have the body type. Sometimes, like with Taylor Swift, the clothes look about as good as on the model, but you look at the clothes not the person. There are some who elevate the clothes with their personna (Helen Mirren). Sometimes the actor takes the clothes in a completely different direction (see Bonham-Carter, Helena).

        And then… there’s Lupita.

    • All_Hail_Great_Satin

She looks awesome, but holy hell, that red dress with the massive shoulder pads is hideous.

      • Pterodactyl111

The dress is alright compared to those shoes, which should be burnt immediately.

        • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Those shoes hurt my feelings so badly that my feelings are over on tumblr right now consoling themselves with Sherlock Holmes fanfic and James Deen gifs.

…which I find really weird because my feelings and I don’t even watch Sherlock or porn.

      • demidaemon

It is hideous, and, somehow, she is making it work.

    • stubbornthoughts

I really don’t care for those last two, but that cover! AMAZING.

So excited to see her on the next red carpet.

    • Sarah

Her eye makeup is AMAZING. And it is hella endearing that she’d draw a parallel between herself and Whoopi Goldberg.

      • AmeliaEve

I find it a really interesting attribution, because Whoopi often talks about how Nichelle Nichols on Star Trek was a role model for her. Generations.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

And it is the answer for why having people of different ethnicities/sexual orientations/genders/sizes/career choices in the media matters. People DO notice if they can’t see themselves represented. This woman was inspired by Whoopi Goldberg and you can bet that there are little girls being inspired by her in turn.

      • kimmeister

Back in the early 90s, when my brother and I were mentally casting our ideal X-men movie, he picked Whoopi for Storm because he literally could not think of another black actress. I’m glad there are so much more of them getting recognition nowadays!

    • ShaoLinKitten

She better win that Oscar. I love JLaw, but this needs to be Lupita’s year.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

JLaw’s good in American Hustle, but Lupita is just flat out shatterlingly good in 12 Years. I am so hoping this is her year.

      • MK03

Honestly, I’ll be happy if either of them win.

        • liam neeson

          *airhorn* wrong answer

    • boweryboy

As much as I disliked that overworked Prada collection, Lupita is managing to make those pieces sing.

    • sienna elm

She looks like a Lupita action figure in that red plastic dress. Everything else is amazing!

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I love the idea of a Lupita action figure-able to leap picky film critics and naysayers in a single bound!

      • MilaXX

U want me a Lupita action figure.

        • KateShouldBeWorking

Waaaay more than a JLo one.

      • cowper

I want to be her in my next life and SLAY everyone with my fierce good looks and killer talent!

    • Kimbolina

Those are some ugly clothes. But damn does she still look amazing. I love her expression in the last shot, as if she’s saying “I can’t believe these mere mortals put me in THIS.” Cause that Prada is fug.

    • filmcricket

Serving up Grace Jones realness. As stunning as she is, and the artwork here, I actually prefer the previous one we saw (DuJour? Was that it?) because they allowed her to have more than one expression on her face.

      • decormaven

Spot on the Grace Jones realness, especially in that red dress.

    • marlie

      Gorgeous. That is all.

    • Glam Dixie

      I……(hides) really don’t like this.

      • Imasewsure

I like her in these (a la Grace Jones 1980′s anti-realness) but these outfits are hideous!!

      • anneland

She is beautiful and a better model than 95% of models. Her skin is amazing (to me all dark skin on men or women is so beautiful… especially in photos). But that cover is fug. The clothes, The makeup. Yuck.

    • MilaXX

Face & Truth! Love her so much!!

    • Imasewsure

Gawd this is some ugly sh*t… luckily it is being worn TO DEATH by Ms. Lupita so it’s all looking amazing in her wake… but man is that some dumb looking stuff

    • GeoDiva

The clothes are horrendous, but she is beautiful!

    • SugarSnap108

That red pleather thing is absolutely hideous. And the shoes look the ones from the Seinfeld episode where everyone thought Kramer was mentally challenged. Yet her sheer gorgeousness will not be brought down.

    • d4divine

Hopefully the ladies walking the Oscar red carpet will you their game since Lupita shut down the Golden Globes…talk about throwing down the gauntlet. I can’t wait!!

    • Diego!

Girl brought it. She looks amazing in every single pic! Go Lupita!

    • BuffaloBarbara

I covet that blue coat. That is all. Nothing else needs to be said.

    • Cousin_Rose

Should be a LOT more jobs for dark skinned models on the runways this year!

    • Dreamwr8tr

She makes totally ridiculous (and frankly HIDEOUS) clothing look FIERCE. DAMN.

    • Trickytrisha

She’s a makeup artist’s dream. And a photographer, stylist, editor…. anyone connected to the fashion and beauty industry. Not to mention the rest of the world. Lucky us to be witnessing this lovely woman coming into the spotlight.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

That eye make up is incredible and sings against her skin.

    • Anna

Congrats indeed to Lupita. Cover says, “Ima take those bitches to college,” regarding her fellow nominees on the red carpet during Oscar night. I only have eyes for her, can’t wait to see what she has in store.

    • quiltrx

Bitch is working these fugly clothes like they owe her money! She made every.single.item. look better than it really is. If she ever decides to quit acting, I think GIVING FACE full-time will not be a problem. I love her three different SUCK IT faces–you go girl!

    • Zach Hodgson

I’ll agree with the sentiment that she is fucking these clothes and making them her bitch. However, (And I will most likely, 100 % be on my own with this one) I actually like the red dress on the model better. Maybe it’s the angle of the shot or how her right foot is or the lack of a belt (Which I love and am not ashamed to admit it), but I just think it is a tad bit better on the model. Please don’t shoot me! Although like I said those other terocious, which is a portmanteau of terrible and atrocious, messes are enhanced exponentially just by being in the presence of her radiance…ness!

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I think the colour of the one on the model is better – it looks a richer red with a slight metallic, which I prefer. I actually think they may have flattened the colour for the editorial to make it fit with the primary colour blocking of the background.

        • Zach Hodgson

BINGO! That is it thank you! It was eating at me for a while. I was like “Am I crazy?!” for a good bit. Also I don’t know about you, but I like how the look is more…what’s the word? “Ethnic” I guess would be the best word for the model version. I don’t know what country she would be from, but that is the major difference beside the color that I can tell. Maybe it’s the hair on the model?

    • DesertDweller79

Damn, she’s awesome. I want to see more, more, more from her. Salivating with anticipation over what her Oscar dress will look like.

    • demidaemon

Julia Roberts shitting herself makes my day every day!

Also: HOT DAMN. This is what I want to see in an actress editorial, now and forever.

    • SewingSiren

That is the best fashion magazine cover in more than a decade.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

        Amen.

    • LaSylphide

Absolutely love that cover; the outfit is beautiful, and the jewels…give me those bracelets!!!!

Don’t like the other clothes much, but that photo with the three eyes is inspired.

    • nycfan

So gorgeousness but some one should thrash whoever put her in those dreadful shoes The model of the yellow Prada dress might want to pull that photo from her book and maybe cry a little at the comparison.

    • guest2visits

Some of the Prada hurts my feelings (especially the ‘flip flops’); but Lupita makes them beautiful.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Utterly gasp-worthy, and both D&G and Prada should bow down to thank her for lending her fierceness to their labels.

    • pookiesmom

      FASHION ORGASM

(even though the fashion is actually kind of terrible) (Lupita WERQs for days)

    • Kent Roby

The models look pissed to be judged next to The Goddess.

    • lillyvonschtupp

I love that she gave props to Whoppi

    • lillyvonschtupp

And I hope she gets that golden dildo and tells St. Julia to lick it!

    • lillyvonschtupp

I thank Prada for using Greer Garson as inspiration for a dress.:0p

    • bellafigura1

I’d love to start seeing some street shots of her, start to get a sense of how she puts herself together off-camera.

    • Sam Smith

Spectacular, hate the shoes in the second photo though.

    • Tatiana Luján

Lupita looks amazing, but Prada was on crack when designing those shoes.

    • MoHub

      Per-FECT!

    • carnush

She really is having her moment. It’s so refreshing to see such a talented woman of color making the most of her time to shine. She’s looking fierce as shit!

    • NYCGlamourpuss

      She should be illegal!! HAWT!!!

    • RedRaven617

I’ve never heard of this publication, but just went to the website. WOW! This is not Vogue. And I mean that in a good way. Great trailer for movie Lupita is producing. She is going to go many, many good places this woman.

    • theblondette

HER SKIN IS ACTUALLY BLACK NOT FILTERED INTO SOMETHING THAT CAN BE DESCRIBED PATRONISINGLY IN THE TERMS OF YOUR DAILY STARBUCKS

    • Kelly

Hate that vinyl dress. But the shoes rock it (not to mention the fierce face).

    • Danielle

The amount of stunning is blinding. She is absolutely, 10000% perfect. I have lady wood.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

I saw these pics the other day and I’ve been waiting on the T-Lo review and DAMN is right! Stunningly fabulous! Miss Lupita is going to have every designer in the world throwing clothes at her and begging to dress her for the various award events leading up to, and including the Oscars. The great thing is, we know from recent experience, she will choose wisely and wonderfully. I can barely contain my excitement for the upcoming parade of fashion and style!

    • crash1212

She is stunning and smart and I wish all good things for her – but – even she can’t pull off those hideous shoes 4th panel down. Also, can’t wait to see what she wears to the Oscars!

    • kt

She is a gorgeous woman, but WTH is with stylists spraying down darker skinned women with silver spray paint? Is metallic skin a thing now? Fetch?

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

      FABULOUS.
Although, I will say that I don’t like the Dolce. It’s just not styled and photographed very well.

Also, this is the first time I notice that the title font of “Dazed & Confused” sometimes – like here – reads as “Dated & Confused”

    • MzzPants

      What a striking woman.

    • julnyes

She is just so … pretty … that eye makeup … I just … ngh.

    • Shawn EH

She’s a fabulous exotic peacock in all those jewel tones! Even like the crazy Prada leg warmers!

    • fananafanafophalec

Is it just me or does, despite her perfection, that red dolce & gabbana dress not quite fit her. as well as those sandals not being even a little bit her size? like her posing is amazing, but the dress still looks hella awkward to me

    • NBG

I hope other magazines follow their lead and DO NOT mess with her skin color in their photos.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

She is a work of motherfucking ART.

    • Lilithcat

If she weren’t so gorgeous and didn’t wear clothes so well, I might hate her for having the good fortune to be able to wear that incredible eye makeup and not look like a clown. Astonishing.

    • lundibleu

Those are some ugly clothes, but DAMN she’s good. The yellow and blue on the cover look SO much better on her than they do on the models that should be selling them.

    • Alfred Cox

This woman is ridiculous. The definition of shuttin’ it down.

    • VicD

She is the ONLY ONE who could wear that weird shit and make it WERQ.

    • Lilyana_F

      God, she’s flawless!

    • Guest

I hate the clothes, but Lupita is a goddess. So stunning.

    • Gatto Nero

Wow. And she’s channeling Grace Jones in that red sculpted D&G dress.
      I’m gobsmacked.

    • Jumpingjacks

That Dolce&Gabbana dress is absolutely hideous.. the shoes don’t help but that dress shouldn’t exist
