Lena Dunham in Zac Posen at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards

Posted on January 13, 2014

Ugh, no. Absolutely not.

“Girls” star Lena Dunham attends the 2014 Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California in a Zac Posen dress accessorized with Harry Winston jewelry.

There’s not one thing anyone could say to us that would cause us to reconsider our thinking on this look. Everything about it is horrible and we’ve never seen a better illustration of why celebrities need stylists. A good stylist would never even have shown her this dress. Let’s be clear: we think Lena could rock a tight strapless gown. But not this one. The shape, the fit, the fabric weight and the color are all wrong for her.

And to be perfectly blunt, if we were Zac Posen, we’d be a little offended by the DIY hair and makeup here. On the other hand, we’re not feeling a lot of sympathy for him at the moment considering he designed this and then lent it to her.

Awful. And an early contender for our “Worst of the Red Carpet” posts.

Just please don’t come at us with “She doesn’t care about fashion.” Ladies who don’t care about how they look don’t choose to wear skin tight strapless gowns in banana yellow paired with a million-dollar diamond necklace.

I would like to introduce her to the concept of Crest White Strips.

    • Emily Smith

I’ve always wondered what stars with sensitive teeth do about teeth whitening. I for one can’t use a crest white strip, not even for 60 seconds, before I would have to rip it out of my mouth and then cry in a corner from sensitivity pain. What can one have done to their teeth if they’re that sensitive? Not saying hers are, I’m just curious.

      • Kimbolina

My guess is they could go to a dentist and have them professionally whitened. They probably have alternative whitening products or could numb your mouth?

      • barbarienne

Sensodyne whitening formula. Not to be a commercial or anything, but that’s what I use, and over the course of a few years (yes, years, alas) it has made my teeth a couple of shades closer to white, and definitely less sensitive.

On the subject of Ms. Dunham’s look… At least she’s doing something other than standing there like a lump? The poses are about what a 6YO does in front of the mirror while wearing mommy’s clothes, but I still feel that’s an improvement over her usual slumped-shoulder, gotta-pee look.

        • Emily Smith

We use some Crest sensitive whitening something, I can’t say I’ve seen a major change from it, but God forbid we buy something other than a P&G product (husband works at P&G). Apparently P&G is working on sensitive mouth strips though. Basically, the crest white strips, but not for whitening, to help decrease sensitivity. I want them but I don’t know if they’ll ever actually go to market.

          • NYCGlamourpuss

You’re all talking about the big thing I’ve wanted to post. The teeth match the dress, and honey, that ain’t good.

          • Emily Smith

Someone else made the initial comment but she deleted it and I’m not sure why.

          • lchopalong

Probably because it may break T&Lo’s rules about commenting on the clothes and not negatively on the actual body of a person.

          • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

The teeth match the dress, and honey, that ain’t good.

            Genius.

          • NYCGlamourpuss

            I’m flattered! ;-)

          • lchopalong

Looking at it closer it seems more like she got her lipstick on them and just smeared it around instead of getting it all off. It seems to have more of a red tint than a yellow.

          • NYCGlamourpuss

I mean, fair enough – whether it’s lipstick or she needs some Crest Strips. It’s just that the main thing that’s making my eye twitch is that she has dirty teeth at a red carpet event.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

They get veneers. I’m having an odd moment of not being able to decide whether I admire her for not having her teeth done, or whether I think she should totally have them done.

        • Emily Smith

Veneers make me think of Hilary Duff’s first round with them. Oh dear. They look good now though.

      • http://samanthatennant.tumblr.com/ Samantha Tennant

I think you can make a DIY whitening paste with baking soda. I’ve heard that turmeric works as well.

        • YoungSally

Turmeric — I am thinking that could be more of a problem.

        • MoHub

Turmeric doesn’t sound right. In fact, it’s often used as a natural yellow dye for fabric.

          • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

“Use turmeric to whiten your teeth” totally sounds like a practical joke waiting to happen.

      • MoHub

Also, most whitening treatments won’t work on crowns, bridges, or implants. They work only on real teeth, so using a whitening treatment could wind up making one’s mouth look like bicolor corn.

        • Emily Smith

          Lol at that image.

        • barbarienne

This was a warning my dentist gave me when he veneered my two front teeth. A mild whitening treatment (such as toothpaste) doesn’t make so radical a change. When we had to replace the veneers several years later (they don’t last forever), we did get to drop back a couple shades lighter.

I’m very sympathetic to Ms. Dunham on this point, as my family’s genetics mean we all have awful teeth (but good hair, hooray). Sometimes there are limits to what one can achieve. Nothing short of yanking them all out and installing implants will ever give me star-quality teeth. She may be in a similar boat.

          • Emily Smith

That’s my situation, weak enamel everywhere. There’s only so much you can do without going to extremes.

        • quiltrx

So many people don’t understand this. I have a TON of dental work, including lots of fillings and crowns. My mouth would look like a nightmare if I tried to whiten. So yellow it is.

          • Guest

            Our mouths are similar.

          • Emily Smith

            Same here.

      • 3boysful

If you use trays, a dentist friend suggested putting sensitive toothpaste in them and wearing for a few minutes, then using the whitening stuff. I suppose you could smear it on teeth before you use the strips.

        • Emily Smith

Hm maybe I should ask my dentist about it. I just run from all other whitening materials besides toothpaste in fear.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Ask a dentist who isn’t in line to make money from your teeth!

          • Diane

I asked my dentist about a whitening my sensitive teeth, and he laughed at me, but that was a few years ago. I have a reputation at my dentist for having über sensitive teeth.

          • Emily Smith

I think my reputation is “that girl who wont stay numb”. Apparently, red heads require more numbing materials than others, something about the lack of melanin? They always have to renumb me and they’re always surprised about it.

      • Aunt Betty

My dentist recommends using a whitening system for only 15 minutes at a time instead of the normal 30. I use mine at night so I’m not awake for the pain. There are also treatments the dentist can give you the lessen the sensitivity of teeth. Suffering for white teeth is worth it if you don’t have to have teeth that look like that.

      • Gener1c

I’m quite sensitive, too! If you rub your teeth (don’t brush) with Sensodyne about 20 minutes before, it helps a lot.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I think that’s her lipstick over her teeth.

      • Lilah

        That was my thought, too.

      • Magatha

Which makes me wonder: dear god, if I had lipstick on my teeth on the red carpet and no one told me, I would fire all of my friends and stylists and PAs. Jeez. I have told perfect strangers about lipstick on teeth, or mis-wrapped wrap skirts, or spinach in teeth. It’s simply a basic rule of everyday sisterhood. Isn’t it?

        • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

It’s our duty to assist all those who pursue fabulousness.

        • heartbot

Makes you wonder if everyone who knows her hates her.

    • Aurumgirl

They’re not going to help. Some shades of lipstick highlight the natural ivory colour of teeth, and when you throw a radioactive yellow green influence on that on top of it, you are going to get yellow teeth.

    • Kate Andrews

Hey, Christi! Yes. I was wondering if she had lipstick on her teeth.

  • Emily Smith

    Banana colored stuffed sausage.

    • MartyBellerMask

I assume the downvotes came from people thinking “stuffed sausage” implies “fat”. It doesn’t. It just implies the dress doesn’t fit. Which it doesn’t.

      • Emily Smith

That’s exactly what I meant. I was a wee tiny thing in middle school when I wore those tank tops. I looked like a stuffed sausage in them. Too tight and unflattering is the same no matter your size.

      • Carrps

Zactly. Anyone will look fatter if their clothes don’t fit properly. It has nothing to do with actually BEING fat. Lena is not fat.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

The more I look at this, the more I want to ask her “What are you doing?” If she’s aiming for irony, then the jewelry is too traditional red carpet for that look. If she’s aiming for sincere red carpet glam, then the dress is all wrong.

      • Emily Smith

It’s one of those times where you question if the person looked in the mirror before hand and genuinely thought “yeah, that’s awesome” or if they just put it on and walked out the door without a second thought.

      • demidaemon

I’m thinking she thinks she is going for the latter, but is unwilling to either a)find more flattering silhouettes or b) ask for something to be altered when it clearly needs to be fit differently.

  • HVM

I just can’t with her posture and posing on the red carpet. Before someone teaches her how to dress, please teach her to stand up straight.

    • bhl_1123

Another reason to dislike Zac Posen: according to her red carpet interview, he told her to stand like that (to make an “S” with her body).

      • HVM

        Say wha?? Huh? Why?

        • bhl_1123

          Because he clearly hates her.

          • DinaSews

It either explains his judging critiques on Project Runway, or he truly does hate her. Either way we need to question is abilities.

          • DebbieLovesShoes

            Yes.

        • Aurumgirl

See? Zac is no friend to Lena.

          • roverrun

Here’s a fact…When Lena was a child, Zac was her baby sitter.

          • DebbieLovesShoes

            Stop it. Really?

          • roverrun

Yes, she has mentioned that in a few interviews; I think he even made her high school prom (or some other school formal occasion) dress.

          • DebbieLovesShoes

Oh, dear. I have a lot less respect for anything Zac Posen says on Project Runway, after seeing what he’d recommend for a starlet WHO HE KNEW. Wow.

          • http://samanthatennant.tumblr.com/ Samantha Tennant

Exactly! She claims he is her friend but honey no friend would send you so many bad dresses and tell you to pose like that.

          • muelonil

I can’t help trying to think of what wicked thing she did as a child on his watch that has him gleefully exacting public revenge…

      • SugarSnap108

I am astounded. Maybe she misheard/misunderstood him? I can actually imagine that happening.

      • DebbieLovesShoes

        Are you KIDDING ME?

      • MoHub

That’s the posture women cultivated in the 1920s to tuck in the boobs and bums so as to look more boyish.

      • Louise Bryan

Oh, I was wondering if this was late onset scoliosis. Stand up straight, child. (Yes, I admit it, I AM old enough to be her mother.)

      • majorbedhead

Wha?? Why? Who can stand in an S shape? I just tried and I think I threw my back out a little.

She irritates the piss out of me.

    • Spreecord

The posing is causing me to feel a tremendous amount of fremdschämen for her. She looks like a teenager imitating a Cosmopolitan cover in the mirror.

      • Chickadeep

Me too…the persistent slouching and deliberately don’t-give-a-shit posing gets on my last nerve sometimes, but this time I just feel bad for her, particularly if she was instructed to do so (wait…what?). p.s. You get bonus points for “fremdschämen.”

      • sojourneryouth

Me too. I sometimes think that she can’t possibly be this clueless, and then I read one of her interviews…

        :-/

      • Lattis

        fremdschämen

        What a great word.

Looking at Lena in this dress is made so much worse seeing her right after the amazing Lupita post.

        • majorbedhead

Oh frabjous day! Fremdschämen is now on my list of favourite words, right next to schadenfreude.

  • michael tanner

    TT – Total Trainwreck

    • NYCGlamourpuss

This. She looks like this ALL THE TIME. I’m so tired of the whole “She’s anti-fashion” schtick. You wanna look like a slob, Lena? Fine – if you want to be an anti-establishment slovenly hipster, then stay away from the red carpet. Then don’t go to awards shows wearing dresses from top designers. Or, speak up if it doesn’t fit you. Get your teeth whitened for god’s sake. Stand up straight. Put in some fucking effort!

That’s it – she’s now at the top of my Irrational Hate List.

      • KinoEye

Beautifully articulated, Glamourpuss. After viewing these photos she rocketed to the top of my list too. I had a crystalizing moment as I gazed at yet another picture of her doing that infuriatingly stupid open mouth expression. Lena, you have surpassed the dreaded Deschanel on my list. No small feat.

      • butterflysunita

It just makes no sense. She’s a young, beautiful woman with access to designer dresses and expensive jewelry. Why does she look so terrible? There’s no reason for it.

      • Trent

Glamourpuss, ITA. If she’s really an anti-fashion hipster (which none of her red carpet choices suggests) why doesn’t she find a talented but unknown Brooklyn designer with adventurous design skills and give him/her national promotion? There are any number of hipster labels that could use the exposure that the Golden Globes offers (21 million viewers last night, gazillions of online views). Instead she constantly chooses upscale labels that the average Brooklyn girl could never afford. She clearly loves designer fashion…nothing ironic about it.

      • demidaemon

        It only took this long?

        • NYCGlamourpuss

No, I guess not – I think it just took till yesterday for it to hit my brain, “I hate her because she’s a slob.” I mean, she just looks sloppy and grubby all the time. I get the feeling that she thinks all she has to do is throw a designer gown on her body and not bother with anything else. Like cleaning lipstick off her teeth, or doing something special with her hair. A clean, neat appearance, great hair, makeup and accessories can elevate a wonderful gown. She can’t expect the garment to do all the work alone for a lovely head to toe appearance! Sweet Jesus, there’s a REASON that Gwen Stefani fucking turns it OUT in simply a tee shirt and jeans – because she understands that fit, cleanliness, hair, makeup, bag, accessories are all part of a simple “running to the market” look, to say nothing of a red carpet look.

          And I’m ranting again!

          • demidaemon

Nothing wrong with a good, well-thought out rant!

      • PeaceBang

Thank you for the righteous indignation elevated to high dudgeon. I stand in total solidarity with you. This is appalling.

        • formerlyAnon

Points for the use of “high dudgeon” in a completely natural manner.

  • Clueless_Jock

It may not be the best dress for her but she obviously loves it, and that’s all that matters.

    • @Biting Panda

Is it ALL that matters? For my little girl, for your average girl on the street, absolutely. At an awards event? I think more things need to matter.

      • marlie

Yep. Here, she’s selling the brand: for her show, for Zac Posen, for Harry Winston… so she’s not doing anyone (except MAYBE her/her show) any favors be half-assing it.

        • @Biting Panda

It kind of pisses me off. Because I don’t feel this is a case of self esteem overriding common sense. This screams of deliberate baiting for negative comments so everyone can “shame” her in some way,. so she in turn can defend it. It stinks of bullshit, hipster irony for the sake publicity and garnering more post GG’s coverage than a non winner would normally receive.

          • Rand Ortega

Wow BP. That is totally cynical. & totally, completely plausible. Kudos. Real insight. Considering the media landscape these days where the only thing that matters are how many social media hits you get, your hypothesis makes sense

          • marlie

That same strategy worked for Miley last year. As long as people are talking about her, sometimes it doesn’t matter what they’re actually saying.

          • Rand Ortega

That is so sad. & yet in a year or 2 they’ll be completely forgotten (&/or in rehab). LiLo Syndrome.

          • Sarah

Not for their demos, who are (I’m guessing) fiercely loyal. The pitfall of “any publicity is good publicity” is that while you might get your fans to support you more, you turn off everyone else who might have appreciated you if you hadn’t been so lame. As in, I have nothing against young women like Miley and Lena trying to get theirs (and honestly Miley offends me WAY more) but there is something to be said for CLASS.

          • Rand Ortega

Absolutely. Class = endurance. Even if your demo is loyal, with time antics wear thin (ask Lady Gaga). #’s & talent are what keeps the projects/$ coming your way. JLaw is a perfect example.

          • decormaven

Spot on, spot on. She knows exactly – EXACTLY – what she is doing. To paraphrase Addison DeWitt, she has confused us with that gang of backward children she play tricks on. Not buying into her BS.

          • Deedles

Oooo… Does that mean if we screw with her and “WERQ” or “attagirl” her all of the time that she will go away?

          • formerlyAnon

The most we can hope for is a less public role. She’s been legitimately successful, and she’s got connections beyond connections. Going nowhere unless she wants to.

          • NYCGlamourpuss

YES! See my rant above – you put it much more articulately than I did, because I’ve just gotten to the point where I can’t stand looking at her.

          • Super_Red

YES to this! I’m so sick of that media cycle with so many hipster stars. “voice of her generation” my ass. Some of us just put our heads down and work to make the world a better place, and if we’re doing the right thing, then screw what other people say. I read an article where her team decimated a tv critic who asked why there’s so much nudity on the show (citing that he understood that GoT has vast amounts, but uses it to titillate, but that didn’t seem to be the purpose on her show, so what was her artistic choice there). I lost any minute amounts of respect for anyone associated with that joke of a show after their comments about the reporter.

          • filmcricket

I don’t watch either show and I don’t know what “her team” said to this reporter, but the idea that nudity should only be used to titillate is one that definitely should be challenged. First of all, titillate who? Is it just because this person prefers Natalie Dormer’s breasts to Lena Dunham’s that he’s objecting? Secondly, I’m not sure that titillation is an artistic choice at all, but if we concede that it is one, showing the reality of non-model people being naked during sex is surely an equally valid one. I’d be interested in a link to the article if you have one handy, because his argument as you’ve presented it here sounds pretty dumb. (That’s a slam on the writer, not you.)

          • Sobaika

The journalist in question wrote about it on his blog – basically, he was asking her to explain the creative choice. GoT does it for titillation, is that why you do it or for other reasons?

It was worded VERY poorly. Came across as, “You no pretty! You no give me boner! Me want pretty!!!”

          • filmcricket

Thanks, I found it. Yes, worded terribly poorly. The initial question was verbal, so I get that it’s easier to screw that up than if it was a written article, but honestly, are we not over the nudity at this point? It was a discussion question 2 years ago. If that’s the state of TV criticism these days it’s pretty sad.

That said, it doesn’t excuse Apatow being an ass about the guy personally.

          • Sobaika

Apatow seems to be an ass at all times, period.

          • marlie

Dude sort of answered his own question. Quite often, nudity on GoT goes hand-in-hand with the objectification and sexualization of women’s bodies to the exclusion of anything else (granted, it often fits in with the story). Despite what one might think of Lena Dunham, she’s trying to show that there’s more to women’s bodies than something for people to be attracted to.

          • demidaemon

Both of these shows also have different cultural norms and mores they are exploring. GoT is basically high fantasy–anyone who has seen high fantasy art knows exactly the audience and what the purpose of nudity within that audience is. Girls is supposed to be a current examination of twenty something women in modern day society. The audience is completely different, and I assume the nudity has something to do with feminist reclamation of the body and hipster ideology. I don’t know, because, quite frankly, I don’t care and have written too much about this already.

          • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Exactly! My thought is she’s just fucking with us now. She knows what she’s doing. Ugh!

          • Lisa_Co

Yes. She tweeted “This is what I’m wearing to the Golden Globes” and put up a picture of a peculiarly shaped winter squash with brown spots and roots growing out of it. She’s trolling us. Ugh is right!

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

No, it’s far from all that matters.

    • jen_vasm

I get the distinct impression that she does love (and crave) the red carpet attention but tries to mock the experience and infer she’s above it all with these silly poses. Like the high school girl who always badmouths the cheerleaders but clearly wants to be one. Give it a rest, Lena – we’re on to you.

      • Adrianna Grężak

Perfect way to phrase it. I had to stop listening to the interview she gave for the “By The Way, In Conversation with Jeff Garlin” podcast. If she’s above red carpets and 30 second fashion interviews for channels like E!, then why is she so motivated to be accepted by the mainstream industry and audience?

      • NYCGlamourpuss

Yup. Yup yup yup, I think you’ve got it.

    • Erica

Wow. I was just thinking that it’s so almost endearingly clueless the way she clearly loves this dress, even though it’s pretty terrible on her. I heard an interview with her in which she said she’s always thought she was very attractive, even as a young girl. And good self- esteem is awesome, but not when it makes you blind to the faults of free dresses you get to wear.

    • heartbot

I don’t know how she can love it. She looks so uncomfortable. I’m hurting just imagining what being in that dress for a few hours must have felt like.

    • Rhonda Shore

Clearly I’m alone in my view that this is one of her better red carpet looks. For one thing, it doesn’t make her look three times her size, which i’ve seen other dresses do for her. I think it’s a good shape for her body..a different color would have been better, but this isn’t as bad as everyone is saying.

      • filmcricket

I actually agree. I wouldn’t have picked this for her in a million years, but compared to other shit she’s worn it’s not bad.

        • Rhonda Shore

          well put!

      • ConnieBV

I’m with you. I saw it on her on TV, it was bright and happy and she looked great and really excited to be in it. I don’t hate the yellow on her at all, and for once she has a shape and was trying to pose. The fit is a bit problematic and all the pulls, but it’s certainly one of her better looks and of course she tried.

      • formerlyAnon

I agree to the extent that it clearly acknowledges that she HAS a body. So much of what she wears is so schlumpy or otherwise ill fitting that sometimes one wonders if the results of putting her actual flesh into it had been overlooked.

    • Bisous3

Sadly, in Hollywood, it really does matter.

    • PeaceBang

That isn’t all that matters. Actually looking decent matters! C’mon, Clueless! Or were you being ironically true to your name? You were, were’t you. Clever bean.

  • VicksieDo

This is another horrible look from the slouchy Lena. I don’t watch her show, but I have to say I see NOTHING special about her AT ALL. What am I missing? I’m pretty mad at her for having to see this last night and again today, it’s HORRIBLE. Zac Posen was on drugs when he gave her this. WTF?

    • Vanessa

I’m confused–If you haven’t seen any of her work, how could you draw a conclusion about her at all?

      • Karen Belgrad

I tried to watch Girls (S1, E1) and turned it off halfway through, as I didn’t care for it. But what irritates me is the “hipster cool” affectation she presents herself with… It’s not endearing to me, it is just irritating!

        • marlie

I made it through the second episode, but I couldn’t bring myself to watch anything beyond that.

      • VicksieDo

She talked a long time with Ryan Seacrest, and was sooooo boring (IMO).

  • Ginny Ellsworth

I’m seeing Ursula from The Little Mermaid.

    • semirose

Lol its like her and JLaw decided on a theme since hers is a total Ariel

  • Kimbolina

The fit is so awful. I don’t even understand…

    • Daisy Walker

I can’t get past the color to even critique the fit!

  • BarniClaw

I gasped, “Oh, no!” when I saw her in this. Just no no no no no.

  • save_the_hobbit

Actually….I feel like this is the best she’s looked in awhile.

    • Diego!

      I agree.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I don’t hate this look. I think the color is actually OK for her. When Dunham is wearing a designer dress and these jewels, then it’s time for professional hair styling and make up-they would have given her some polish.

    • tallgirl1204

Oh what a relief– I’m with you! There’s something about the neckline and the bust that are quite flattering to her body. And yellow isn’t a bad choice either, in my mind.
However, the mermaid silhouette (sp?) doesn’t work on her bell-shaped body (I possess one myself, and I’m not snarking). Something with the top half and then flow-ier on the bottom might have done her more justice. She is corseted in to this thing so hard that I can’t breathe just looking at her.
Kudos to her for having the confidence to go out there and try to make it all work. I don’t watch her show, so I don’t have a personal opinion regarding her as an actress or comedian, but I applaud her chutzpah in the face of constant raspberries.

      • save_the_hobbit

Exactly my thoughts! The mermaid dress doesn’t work on her, but the top of it looks gorgeous on her and I actually quite like yellow.

        • Sarah

The top is too tight. It could be flattering, but all of your shoulder blades and armpits should not be outside your bodice.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Agreed – If her boobs had proper support, they’d balance her hips quite well.

      • demidaemon

I don’t think this is flattering to her bust at all. Her boobs look squished and like they are trying to escape. This may be due to the fit, but I don’t believe you can comment on silhouette until the fit is perfect

    • mlurve

I thought it’s “better” than what she’s done previously, but we are kind of grading her on a curve. At least she’s improving?

      • mshesterp

I’m with you re: grading on the curve. It’s not nearly the worst thing I’ve ever seen her in, although the fit in the bust is wonky and the sultry camera mugging irritates me to no end. But I really don’t think it deserves the vitriol it’s receiving. She’s looked SO. MUCH. WORSE. The DIY hair/makeup, though–that sucks.

    • Evan

The hair is horrible though. And the uncles are right; she obviously cares about fashion. Meryl Streep is somebody who doesn’t give two fucks about fashion (And I kind of love her for it lol).

    • barbarienne

Right with you. Sure, the dress fits badly, but the color isn’t too bad, and the general silhouette is appropriate for her. Go up a size and tailor it, and it would look good.

It may be that her smile is selling it to me a bit. ;-)

For me the really awful part of this look is the hair. If the hair were styled, we would have an easier time overlooking the other flaws.

    • Zaftiguana

For some celebrities, that’s a meaningful compliment. For this one, that’s just too low a bar to be much of a defense.

In fairness, i do think that with the right undergarments, fit styling, and FOR GOD’S SAKE, KNOCK IT OFF WITH THE TEENAGER FACEBOOK PHOTO POSING, YOU’RE A GROWN WOMAN WEARING A KASKILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF FASHION, this dress could have worked for her. Not WERQed, but worked. But seriously, if she’s not going to put the effort into executing this like a grown-up professional, then she should get a cute vintage frock from the boho consignment place down the street, stop wasting people’s time, and call it a day.

  • Karen Belgrad

She talked about how she was told to strike an “S” like pose for photos. I think someone should have just told her to stand up straight (for once).
I can’t believe Posen designed a dress to look like a Beatles song.

  • Frank_821

    I echo ugh!

at first I said, wow Lena has the figure to pull off a form fitting gown. why doesn’t she do it more often

then the color and the bodice and THE HAIR kicked in…double ugh!!!

it’s so aggravating. With just a little more effort she could be faboo and stylish yet still be her

  • jen_vasm

Basic Fashion Rule: Do not match your dress color to your teeth.

  • Diego!

I have to say… considering who we are talking about here, it’s not her worst EVER. She looks confident and quite good in my opinion. She wore trashier disasters even worse than this one. I think I’ll giver her an IN but she needs new make up and hair ASAP: And teeth too.

    • Tatiana Luján

I think she has lipstick on her teeth and that’s why they look orange.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

And the wrong shade of lipstick. A bluer red would make her teeth look whiter.

    • marlie

I think this might actually be worse than her Prada from last year.

      • Diego!

You think? I remember an orange dress she wore for which I had nightmares during weeks. Just kidding! :P

      • lunchcoma

I hate this more too. I think it’s because I can see some ways this could have worked that Posen and Dunham both missed, while that Prada disaster was pure go home and start over.

        • marlie

The Prada had a gorgeous print, and was custom made for her. You could argue that because it was custom, there was ABSOLUTELY no reason why it failed as badly as it did, but I think that it had a germ of a good idea. This dress… I hate the color, I hate the way the bodice fits, I hate how fussy it is (typical for Zac Posen), and the way the seams are pulling and puckering. To me, there’s nothing redeeming about this one.

          • formerlyAnon

So we totally agree except on which offends more. All is right with the universe, then. ;-)

          • demidaemon

Do you find it amusing when he tells other designers to edit (as Georgina also often does) when you know the both of them clearly have problems in that department?

          • marlie

YES. And when he nitpicks about some of the finishing details. He has NO room to talk.

          • demidaemon

I’m glad I’m not the only one.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

I click the up button ten times on this but it just turns my 1 on and off instead of giving ten ups!!!!

          • demidaemon

            Thanks!

      • mshesterp

Shut yo’ mouth! That Prada was just awful…I looked at it again and shuddered, the balloon skirt was so gigantic. I think this is way better.

        • marlie

Don’t get me wrong – it was terrible. But I bet it would have been worlds better if they’d even just taken some of the volume out of the skirt.

      • formerlyAnon

The Prada was in better colors for her but it offended me much, much, more deeply. It was CUSTOM for her. In the circumstances the fact that it made her look like a small colorful iceberg with no waist was a crime.

    • Violina23

This is definitely the worst I’ve seen her in, but maybe I missed a few…

      • Diego!

We should check Tom and Lorenzo’s database! :P

        • Sobaika

Speaking of, I’d like to applaud TLo for saying similar things about her style for a while now (they called it) without sounding repetitive.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

It’s sad that we grade her on degrees of terrible. She really is a pretty lady and could look beautiful with the right dress. Sigh.

    • demidaemon

No, it’s not her worst. She has improved slightly, but I feel like she is clearly stuck. Until she gets dresses that fit her properly, she needs to rethink her approach to the RC.

  • NinjaCate

REALLY?!?! As much as I hate this girl, (and, oh, how I hate her) I thought this dress was pretty good! She had fit issues because she always does, and her OMG HER TEETH, but I thought the colour was really nice.

  • nannypoo

She looks ridiculous and I can’t stand her but I do have something positive to say: She has nice eyebrows.

    • Sobaika

Her costar Zosia, who brought it on the red carpet, also has great brows.

      • marlie

Though in the picture I saw last night, Zosia had this smirk on her face that made me want to smack her. I barely thought about the dress.

      • Little_Olive

I like Allison’s better. But maybe I’m biased because Zosia *knows* her eyebrows are, like, “so now”.

        • demidaemon

I saw an interview with her where she said she has a column in Glamour and she was going to write an article about the evolution of the eyebrow.

Seeing everyone’s comments here made me want to throw up a little.

      • alyce1213

maybe they should have called the show “Brows.”

  • thecitysleeps

I sympathize with her, because I can relate to her. She obviously feels really good in it and I have so much respect for her. Having said that, the hair and make up are worse than the dress for me. Also the Girls premiere was quite awesome. I love you Lena.

  • Richard Banger

I feel like this looks better in these pictures because she’s not slouching. It looked horrendous when she was being interviewed on the red carpet.

  • lalahartma

I think it’s one of her better looks.

    • MilaXX

      sadly it is.

    • alyce1213

      She has better looks?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

There was a red coat dress a while ago that looked killer on her… except she looked completely upset about wearing it.

  • Introspective

she literally fell for the banana in the tailpipe. & the results speak for themselves.

  • @Biting Panda

    TROLLING US. period.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

      A FREAKING MEN to this.

    • Violina23

Seriously! Although she doesn’t have a model-skinny body, she’s certainly not fat, yet chooses the most unflattering thing she could possibly pick for her body.

      • marlie

Zosia has done it too, picking horribly unflattering things. Which just shows that sometimes size has nothing to do with picking the right clothes for oneself.

    • formerlyAnon

      One only hopes so.

  • In_Stitches

Spot on. If she didn’t care about fashion, she’d show up in something from the Gap which would be a cool statement. Instead, she showed up in an ill-fitting, attention-seeking gown with sloppy hair and unimpressive make-up.

I think that dress could work for her were she wearing the proper bra and were the cups fitted to her.

    • marlie

And if she stood up straight, fer chrissake.

    • lunchcoma

I can’t look at that thing without cringing for her poor cleavage. It looks like it’s being sliced in half, and that can’t be comfortable.

    • muzan-e

Amen. A true story: back in my conservatorium days, First Violin occasionally showed up to morning classes in her pajamas, with rats-nest hair and all. The girl was a prodigy, she did it to make a point, and the point was: those who object to this will grit their teeth and put up with it, because raw talent trumps convention and every one of us knows it.

She was right. And if Lena Dunham rocked up to the red carpet tomorrow looking like she’d just stepped out of Walmart, I’d stand up and applaud her for making it all about the art, not the poledance. But this reads like she’s been checking off points on a list: Expensive Necklace. Designer Gown. Lipstick. Hair Did. She cares, she’s trying, and somewhere there are people failing – or being afraid – to give her a hand.

    • not_Bridget

In one of Zoisia’s recent appearances (featured here), she wore a well-fitted little black dress & slightly odd vintage jewelry. Her makeup was good, hair a bit flat. She looked like the Bohemian Artiste Who Doesn’t Care About Red Carpets–but she still managed to look good.

      This is a disaster….

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I don’t *hate* the yellow, but I think this shape in maybe a blue or green and actually fitting her would be a win.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

Melissa Rauch wore a yellow dress on the red carpet last night which was almost exactly the same as this except it had a lot of draping over the top of the corsetry etc, and I just wonder if that could have turned this Lena dress from an epic fail to a win.

What I do not like most about this dress is that this looks like the lining of a dress to me. Too many seams, too much puckering.

Please can someone introduce Lena to Tadashi Shoji, stat?

      • boweryboy

“Please can someone introduce Lena to Tadashi Shoji, stat?”
She would fuck that up as well.

      • alyce1213

I noticed Melissa Rauch’s yellow gown with ruching in all the right places, which I thought might have helped this pathetic soul. Well, Melissa looked good.

  • Scimommy

This is the first time I’m clapping my eyes on this and… I expected SOOO MUCH WORSE. It’s not offensively bad, it’s just…not good.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like the color on her. The size of the dress is entirely too small for her, maybe it would have looked better it it were the right size.

  • Little_Olive

I’m sorry but I can’t refrain from laughing at all the posing and gesturing. From her. Bwahahahahahaha……

  • bxbourgie

The fit probably wouldn’t look so bad if she wasn’t posing like a complete idiot. She looks like you look when you’re alone in the dressing room at Macy’s trying to pose in the mirror for a cute selfie to send to your BFF. The hair is a mess, Her teeth need whitening. Ugh!

  • Anna_Cecilia

Couldn’t help but think of Paula Patton who also wore a yellow strapless dress to the Golden Globes two years ago. Both have equally dumb and irritating posing skills.

For the love of all that is good and green in this world, Lena, pay someone to help you.

    • MilaXX

      Pay and listen.

      • Anna_Cecilia

We and our corneas can only hope!

  • Margaret Grace

So, you know when you’re an obnoxious teenager and your parents say something you don’t want to hear, and so you slouch and go UNhHhHhHhHhHhHhHhHhHhHHhhhhh and walk dramatically out of the room?
I’m making that noise. Lena, you’re making me make that noise and slouch and walk dramatically away from the computer.

  • SewingSiren

Oh I think she cares about fashion alright. She’s mocking it. She isn’t really trying to compete with the beauties. More like entertain with a comic twist. I do think she succeeded in that. It is kind of cute in a Betty Boob kind of way.

    • mariavii

I thought that too, but if I were mocking Fashion, I would still make damn sure you couldn’t see my VPLs (Or maybe VS(panx)Ls).

    • Carrie

It isn’t entertaining or cute. She looks like a fool.

I’m all for mocking red carpet conventions, but like anything else you have to understand your subject before you can mock it successfully and she clearly doesn’t.

      • SewingSiren

The very fact that we are discussing it on this blog post implies a certain amount of entertainment value.

        • decormaven

Yes, and that pains me above all else.

        • Carrie

True. Though now we’re getting into laugh at vs. laugh with territory and that isn’t so great either.

    • MilaXX

I don’t think she’s mocking it. She’s trying & failing. She gets big name designers like Prada & Zac Posen to make dresses for her. Dresses that coast thousands. That’s not mocking, that’s failed attempts.

      • SewingSiren

Zac Posen had to know exactly were this dress was headed when he made a big yellow satin mermaid gown for Lena Dunham to wear on the red carpet .

        • Carrps

Ha, in that case, its Zac doing the mocking. Not Lena.

        • formerlyAnon

That’s the piece I can’t figure out with more women than just la Dunham. You don’t get to be a Big Name Designer, generally, because you are *bad* at what you do. (I personally may not understand it, but that’s my lack of context or difference int taste.) When fashion houses’ gowns make their wearers look awful, what went wrong? Isn’t the point making everyone watching get big eyes and say “Oooohhhhh, I want to wear something by XXX some day (even if it is an overpriced downmarket handbag & not this lovely gown)”??

  • SugarSnap108

From the sublime (Lupita) to the ridiculous (her posing being the worst part, to me).

    • @Biting Panda

      Red Carpet Whiplash.

  • Erica_Vuitton

Is it just me who think Zac is kind of an asshole for putting Lena in pretty much the same friggin dress as Sofia Vergara? I’m loving the color but the fit is a disaster.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I totally have to agree with you on this. Never been much of a fan of him but this is a fashion crime. And no need to bring the crime scene tape, just rip little strips off the dress. No really, it will look better. ;)

  • marlie

WTF IS UP WITH HER HAIR? And she needs to stop with the “sexy” and “coy” posing. STOP. That color is not her friend, and the fit is atrocious.

    • Sarah

OMG THAT HAIR. It is painful.

  • Anne

I hate the faces she’s making in the pictures, like she’s wearing the dress ironically in some way. If she would just own the fact that she’s wearing a designer gown and expensive jewelry, I would respect her a lot more.

    • Carrie

Those faces are the worst, icing on the godawful cake. Everything about this look is wrong, wrong, wrong.

    • Katesymae

She pretty much acknowledged that she’s shit at posing and doesn’t know how to do it. You can kind of see that in her photos – in one, she gives fierce face; in the next, an awkward/cheeky smile. I just don’t know if I can agree that she’s being “ironic” and mocking or merely playfully self-deprecating about the whole thing.

      • Anne

Maybe it’s not irony, but the self-deprecation irritates me all the same. It’s like she’s apologizing to her fans for HAVING to wear this couture gown and jewelry.

        • Katesymae

Hmm. I don’t feel the same way, but I am a fan, so maybe I’m inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt. My take is that she seems to be a little self-conscious about playing the game, and while she wants to be the girl wearing the pretty dress with all eyes on her, doesn’t necessarily see herself as someone who does it naturally. Also, I dunno – would feeling a little funny about wearing thousands of dollars in merchandise for one night out be the worst way a celebrity could feel?

          • Anne

That definitely makes sense. To me it just feels a little disingenuous, I can’t even quite pinpoint why.

          • Katesymae

Fair enough. We all have things that make our eyes twitch. :) I’m just kind of overwhelmed at the tidal wave of Lena hate on the site today.

  • Sara

It’s certainly not the best, but it’s by no means the worst of the night. I saw plenty more gowns that were horrible. I do think Lena cares about fashion, but maybe not what everyone else thinks. It’s a better silhouette for her than her Emmys gown that’s for sure.

  • Annarosa

    everything hurts.

  • Lindsay Donohue

I’m sorry, but that weird open mouthed thing? Actually I’m not sorry, this is horrible and in very poor taste. If she had just smiled that would be one thing. But this? Is she mocking the event? The whole thing baffles me. Her show “Girls” is all about female friendship, obviously she needs a girlfriend that tells her the truth before she walks out the door.

    • MilaXX

She’s trying and failing to do the open mouth pose thing. Shame because she has a really nice smile and I would much rather see her cheesing.

  • marlie

Also, Zac Posen’s designs are usually overwrought and overdone, and Lena Dunham needs dresses that are the total opposite of overwrought and overdone. Whoever thought that putting her in a ZP dress needs to be slapped.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. She cares. She wants us to disapprove of her so she can remain an outsider while being wildly successful. She needs to feel like she’s not one of the group in order to do her thing.

    • MilaXX

I think she cares and used the hipster/outsider thing as a defense mechanism when she gets it wrong.

      • A Shiny O’Connor

        That’s a very good point.

      • largishbearishAtlish

Please please tell me this isn’t that “irony” horsecrap again?? as to the ‘outsider’ thing- I think Kathy Griffin has made a great career out of being on the ‘d-list’ (tho I say she at least up to the C-list now)…

        • demidaemon

True. Kathy knows and sells her brand. And she sometimes chose outfits to purposely get herself on Worst Dressed Lists, because she knew it would get her press. But I don’t think Lena has had to work quite as hard to get her accolades or her place in the celebrity world, and I do think she wants to be looked at as being beautiful. I don’t think she picked out this dress purposely to get on a WDL. I do think, however, she avoids altering her dresses for some bizarre reason I cannot figure out.

    • Magatha

That’s plausible. I kind of get it. But the method she’s chosen seems to involve mocking and trashing her own body. Why not do a Dunham-shaped version of Katharine Hepburn, for example, and choose a dramatic, singular style and stick with it? Find something outside fashion or trend and make it her own. She’s got all those tattoos: why not make her clothing work with the tattoos, kind of architectural that still works with her curves? Instead she’s going all clown-y. I mean, obviously she should do whatever she wants and have fun with it, but I wonder why she chooses this way.

      • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

The truly sad thing is that this is her trying the Hepburn route; she just can’t pull it off because she lacks the requisite taste and creativity.

    • SugarSnap108

I suspect you’re right. I’ve always thought that her looks are calculated, and she’s not just clueless about what works for her. I’m not sure if she wants us to think she’s a too-cool-for-school outsider, or endearingly “real” and fashion unconscious.

    • KinoEye

Well said. Another thought just occurred to me — if she’s trying to fool us into thinking she IS some sort of “outsider,” that’s a laugh. When your parents are well-established, connected New York artists who have both summer AND weekend homes with enough money to send you to an exclusive independent school, I’m sorry, but you’re no outsider.

  • Mary Carpenter

I’m more upset with Zac Posen than I am with Lena. Why won’t someone work with her style? I would have rather seen her in her favorite jeans and t-shirt than this banana.

    • demidaemon

True, but I think this deserves fifty-fifty blame. Zac for allowing this dress to be sent out and Lena for choosing and wearing it on the RC.

      • formerlyAnon

35-65. Dunham isn’t a fashion professional. Posen is.

        • demidaemon

True. I am going to say 45-55 at the very least, as she still wore the damn dress, knowing how it fit.

  • 3boysful

Except for the fact that we KNOW this is an expensive dress and jewelry, this could be the photo of a high school girl who bought the wrong sexy dress and did bad DIY hair and face paint for the prom.

  • Violina23

Is there an opposite to WERQ? Oh Lena, my 4-year-old could pick out a better-fitting dress for you than this…

    • In_Stitches

I’ve heard WREQ used, which I love.

  • MilaXX

Somewhere in there is the germ of a good idea, but the plot is lost. This is the wrong color for her and it’s all horribly wrinkled and baggy looking on her. That said, I think this is closer to the right shape for her figure. I also think the makeup is a vast improvement of some of her previous RC appearances. Her hair needs to grow out a bit more and she needs to learn how to pose & wear the proper undergarments for her body.

    • Saturnine

I agree. I don’t follow her at all (except here:-)), but I don’t see an obvious “disdain for fashion” (read: fancy red carpet appearances) in her choices. I just think she doesn’t have a (trustworthy) stylist, doesn’t know which foundation garments work best for her, or maybe really likes a particular garment that is NHD* We’ve all been there–my mirror doesn’t tell me all I need to know either.

      * Not her dress

    • @Biting Panda

The only good idea I see here was her choice to not show up naked, as I am deeply tired of seeing her tits.

    • Sarah

Yes, by all means, grow out the hair, but I cut all mine off to about two inches long a few years back, and the whole time it was growing to the shoulder-length I have now, I managed to make it look better than this. Curling irons! Product! Combs, barrettes, clips! I want to grab her head off her body in these pics and Barbie Styling Head that mother. YIKES.

  • Barbara Thomas

Her tattoos look like some kind of fungal growth.

    • Carrps

      Or bruises.

  • Clydette Wantland

Hell no! From top to bottom, NO!

  • Lilah

Huh. I don’t get what is so bad. The dress is puckering for sure, but isn’t that the way with anything from Zac Posen? The color isn’t the best choice, also. But the dress is giving her shape and she is obviously loving it. I’d say it is a step in the right direction. Hair, makeup and teeth need a lot of help, though.

  • boweryboy

Feh. I can’t with her anymore. I used to think she doesn’t care about fashion, but she does. She just doesn’t care what it looks like on her.

All the designers of the world should collectively ban her from wearing any of their designs until she’s ready to take the whole thing seriously. If it’s all a joke to her, then why bother in the first place?

    • Vanessa

“…she does [care about fashion]. She just doesn’t care what it looks like on her”

OK .This actually makes sense–she picks a dress that she just LOVES, but doesn’t give consideration to whether it is “her” dress or not.

      • Susan Velazquez

That’s it! That’s the nail on the head. Because she does picks nice pieces but she doesn’t take into consideration how it will look on her and whether it’s for her, FMO, or just not her dress entirely.

  • MsC

Girl, that’s not your dress. The mermaid dress needs someone who can stand up straight and wear the dress, not let the dress wear her. Everything except the necklace and manicure is bad.

  • carnush

Will SOMEBODY help her? Please? It’s getting to be too much.

  • SophieCollier

She’s trying SO HARD here too. Posing! Giving face!

  • Goldfish Venom

I thought she looked great, definitely a personal best. I absolutely love the color on her too. Oop at me I guess.

  • gigi kennedy

none of this makes any sense.

  • Aurumgirl

I’m thinking poor Lena has no friends in the fashion world. One by one, the designers want her dead. Or, at least, suffering mightily in public, on every red carpet, and for posterity.

  • Vanessa

What gets to me in what she wears on the red carpet is not any of these things, but simply how old fashioned and unexciting the clothes are–I feel like all her personality gets washed away in a dress like this

  • Sarah

I know TLo addressed the hair, but SERIOUSLY. That’s a bad fit on the dress, but I think it’s one of her less heinous looks. THE HAIR, however, is KILLING ME.

    • gigi kennedy

yes! the hair and make up make this a bazillion times worse. so annoyed right now

  • gayle

God I cannot wait to see what her Vogue cover now

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

    speechless.

  • larshine

I can’t help but think that if she would STAND UP STRAIGHT FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS… her appeal would improve dramatically. The schlumping makes me insane and puts her at the top of my Irrational Hatred list. However, this dress is so not for her, and the hair and makeup are terrible… but the posture is the worst of the lot.

    • Snailstsichr

Amen. Her posture makes me cry.

  • moppet

I fear that this will come across as damning with faint praise, but I truly believe she has gorgeous skin and eyes, and a lovely, genuine smile. I don’t hate the yellow. I think it’s a lot of look, but it could work with a dress that was more flattering to her body shape. This is just such a no…but she seems so happy! It makes you almost hate to be critical, because she looks like SHE feels great.

  • Rand Ortega

I dislike this young woman for what she represents. But I’m starting to really pity her. If Biting Panda’s very astute assessment is true, her desperation to stay relevant at the expense of her self respect is a very sad commentary on the state of our media culture that fosters a young woman selling her & her era’s soul just to be in the public eye. If she just has no clue about fashion, then how sad she doesn’t have people around her who don’t have the presence of mind (aka courage) to point her in the direction of what really looks good on her. If it’s the latter I hope that blindness doesn’t extend to her other dealings in life.

  • http://figgylicious.blogspot.com/ Figgy

Is she incapable of taking a normal picture? I can’t even tell what the damn dress looks like because she’s posing so stupidly in every picture. Ugh, this woman.

  • Garcia Loca

Is it me, or does that “million-dollar diamond necklace” look like the kind of a rhinestone mess one would pick up off the Wal-Mart clearance rack for $1.99 and have the stones fall out of it the first time they wore it? Would it look good on anyone, or does Miss Lena have the knack for making anything she wears look downmarket?

  • guyfromhoboken

This is someone who so desperately wants to be a skinny little sexy starlet, but pretends she doesn’t.

    • Hiptobesquare

I believe you have hit the proverbial nail on the head.

    • formerlyAnon

I would like to think you are wrong, but it makes sense. (Though I’d imagine she wants to be the intellectual artiste who can compete in the looks department with all the skinny little starlets.)

  • Austen Jane

I think the hair is what I find most offensive. My third grade son, on an average day, has hair that looks better than this.

  • theblondette

Jaysis, woman, no. Look. I have a similar body type to Lena, though my tits are way way bigger- I have a bit of a belly and my upper arms are not my best feature. And if I had to go parade around with a bunch of size 0 celebrities I would feel awkward too. It is clear from these photos that she feels super-awkward, no matter how many “I AM TOO COOL FOR THIS! THIS IS JUST A GOOD TIME FOR ME!” poses she throws. The slouching, the exaggerated expressions, all speak of a woman who lacks confidence. Who thinks: I really want to wear a ballgown but I am too hip and also secretly I don’t feel like I deserve to wear a princess dress, so I’ll pick one in a horrid flashy colour and act like it’s a joke. But you can wear clothes with your tongue in your cheek and not look like YOU are a joke. It’s sad. This dress could work if it had better boning, and if she were wearing serious support garments under it. And it was a size larger. And in a different colour. And she stood up straight. And then she could own her curves and her offbeat looks. Do it, girl. Please.

    • Carrps

Yeah, she doesn’t look curvy … just lumpy.

  • MannahattaMamma

Are we meant to read this entire spectacle as if it’s a satiric commentary on celebrity and etc? The faux kittenish posing, the little over the shoulder glance – it all seems so appallingly bad that it can only be deliberate, don’t you think? If she’s as smart as everyone says she is…doesn’t she know she looks like a tattooed banana? (With all due respect to bananas everywhere.) Because if she’s *not* doing an ironic RC spin, then I’ve moved beyond blech to “oh you poor thing, someone should really stage an intervention on your sorry designer-clad ass.”

  • susu11

I wish I had a more insightful comment to add, but all I can think is ” Barf “

  • CeeRich

I don’t think the silhouette would be that bad for her if this were in a rich color like navy, plum, etc. Her poses are awful and her posture was awful. She needs a stylist STAT.

  • EEKstl

What was Zac Posen THINKING???? He and his people should be more ashamed of themselves than Lena, frankly. Any designer should know going in that this woman either doesn’t know the first thing about what looks good on her or doesn’t care. This was a great opportunity for Posen to go all Henry Higgins on her ass. Missed opportunity, and worse – horrible result.

  • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

Ladies who don’t care about how they look also don’t give us a 1000 and 1 poses and smizes.

  • Sara Hottman

Pretty sure that’s lipstick on her teeth. Girl…

  • Jessica Freeman

Wrong color, extremely wrong fit. This had potential, but of course she shit all over it…of course.

  • Judy_S

Perhaps she’s satirizing the whole red carpet process? “Look, I can get designers and jewelers to lend me this stuff just because I write and star in a show about regular women who would be chased out of the relevant stores because they obviously don’t belong there. They think some of my success will rub off on them, but in fact it comes from treating their world as on a par with Barbie’s Dream House. So, just to remind you of all that….” That’s a kind of caring about fashion… in a negative way….

    • Susan Velazquez

I don’t really agree with that because at the same time you have Octavia Spencer, Melissa McCarthy, Rebel Wilson, and Gabourey Sidibe who look polished and fabulous even though they have the same challenges Lena faces when she’s looking for a dress to wear. I think Lena just doesn’t have a good stylist and tries to pretend that her bad outfits were on purpose to cover the embarrassment.

      • Judy_S

Right–I was just trying to figure out why most women take it seriously (and for the women you mention look fabulous on the RC) while this gal seems to revel in looking silly/ugly while wearing really fabulous, expensive clothes. Kind of like the Joker in Burton’s Batman “making art” by defacing the paintings in a museum (or the face of a beautiful woman). I’m not saying it’s an attractive or mature approach to the red carpet. I’m just trying to figure out why an intelligent “girl” seems to make fun of the very concept of dressing up over and over again. It’s like performance art.

      • demidaemon

To be fair, I don’t think Lena has a terribly challenging body to dress compared to the other people you mentioned on the list, who, most of the time, look much more polished and fabulous than she does when on the RC.

        • Susan Velazquez

True, which makes her sloppiness even more embarrassing.

    • Little_Olive

Maybe she is, but it wouldn’t make me like her one bit more. Because, I mean, how self-absorbed and infantile a take on things that would be -she *is* making money and she does like the success she is getting, right?

  • http://urban-gypsy.com/ Tess Danesi

This woman needs a stable of queens who will teach her to pose, help her with hair and makeup, and refuse to let her out of her house if she dons anything like this ever again. It’s. Just. So. Bad.

  • Rachel

I understand that she wants to break stereotypes as she proudly (and publicly) displays her body. But if she continues down this road, it’s going to continue to backfire. This smacks of “look, I can wear the same things as Stickfigure McGee!” and I get that, but she’s doing average and plus-size women a disservice by looking like a wreck. Pull it together, employ a stylist who will be brutally honest, and start killing it.

    • Carrps

      Oh, man, THIS.

  • anotherkate

Is it so much to ask for her to get her damn hair done professionally for the Golden Globes? It’s TV’s biggest night (maybe tied with the Emmys, but they’re rubbing shoulders with the movie people so I imagine that’s even MORE reason to bring your sartorial A-game). I mean, I think the dress is wrong for her (the boobs on the dress don’t fit the boobs on her body, which is an automatic dealbreaker, no?), but it’s the DIY hair and makeup that ruin it for me. I love that she’s confident, and I love her smile, but show a little respect and hire someone to do your head.

  • sagecreek

Has she no friends who will intervene? I wouldn’t let someone I even mildly liked go on the RC looking like this.

    • formerlyAnon

Hell, I’d try to talk a total stranger into something better than this, given the opportunity.

  • MissKimP

The red carpet and ironic hipster “I-don’t-give-a-sh*t” attitude (see Robert Downey, Jr., for male equivalent) do not mix well. She’s trying to have her cake and eat it too–basking in the spotlight while signaling that this is all a ridiculous spectacle–but it just reads as lack of confidence and maturity, as well as lack of respect for fellow artists, designers, etc. Own it or don’t show up.

    • DTLAFamilies

      Nailed it.

    • marlie

You have a point, but the only difference I see is that someone like RDJ or Johnny Depp (who I can’t stand) have put YEARS into the business and have sort of earned the right to be a little more devil-may-care. Same goes for Meryl Streep or Emma Thompson. The two of them clearly don’t give a f*ck, but they’ve more than earned their right to be there. And I don’t know who the make equivalent of LD would actually be… RDJ is WAY too old to be a hipster. ;)

      • Little_Olive

Yes! As a mater of fact, I find myself so often agreeing completely with you. Let’s go for beers!

        • marlie

Aw, thanks! Are you in the Philly area? I’m always up for a drink. :)

          • Little_Olive

Not really… I live in Chile :/ I was sorta bluffing… unless you have US$ 2,000 lying around for me to get there.

          • marlie

HA. Not anytime soon. We’ll just have to have a virtual drink together next time in the TLounge. :)

      • not_Bridget

Hipsters have been around a long, long time….

      • Loramir

It is also possible to be quirky or devil-may-care or ironic on the red carpet but in a charming, confident, having-fun-with-it kind of way, not an immature, pretentious, attention-seeking, i-don’t-have-to-care-about-this-because-i’m-an-ARTIST kind of way.

To me it’s the difference between Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. I’m not into either of their music but I generally want to slap Gaga on sight because she’s so unbearably pretentious while Katy most of the time seems to be having fun with it. (Gaga tries to act so deep and artsy and then she writes a song that includes the phrases “bluffin’ with my muffin’” and “stunnin’ with my love-glue-gunning,” ugh) I see that difference between Johnny Depp and RDJ too. RDJ (usually – sometimes he does cross the line into obnoxious clown territory) seems to be having fun, corny as he may sometimes be, while Johnny tends to look like he just can’t be bothered and would rather be anywhere else.

Lena just seems very try-hard and immature and self-absorbed, trying to act like she’s above it all. I also very much agree with Biting Panda above. I feel like she “can’t be bothered” to dress in a way that flatters her, just so she can claim that people are body-shaming her or being superficial or otherwise victimizing her when it’s pointed out. I’m exactly her age and I do NOT want her as the “voice of my generation.” I’ll speak for myself, thanks.

  • ScarlettHarlot

This would look lovely on Jessica Chastain.

  • Erica Woods Tucker

She has the worst posture ever to walk down a red carpet. We won’t go into the teeth. I can’t…

  • MartyBellerMask

I am inclined to say she is trying and leave it at that.
I am also inclined to say those tattoos are HIDEOUS.

  • Victoria Anzalone

Nay to the fit and proportion. Yay to the color and attitude.

  • KinoEye

UGH. Our guncles have said all that needs to be said about that dress. And no, you don’t go out wearing Harry effing Winston if you don’t care about how you look. But what really, really irritates me are her facial expressions. Is it supposed to be funny, or does she honestly think that looks good? It doesn’t. Girl, the pseudo-Monroe sexy open mouth is not your expression. And for the love of the extremely expensive couture you wear, LEARN HOW TO POSE.

    • Carrps

And, ugh, with the tongue pressing against her upper teeth. So babyish and trying-to-be-seductive … just no.

  • marishka1

Million dollar necklace? Are you sure that isn’t from the $10 rack at Claire’s? :-)

  • Scot Meacham Wood

ok. yes – it’s a horrid gown. and yes, we may all agree that she looks horrid in it. But . . . after seeing her on the red carpet these last few seasons looking almost like she’s being taken away to her own execution . . . it’s kinda lovely to see her *clearly* feeling pretty. Using her body (yes, not very well, but I’m grading on the curve here). Flashing what looks like an authentic grin.

  • ShaoLinKitten

The only positive thing I can say about this is: she is trying. She really thought this would look good. She needs a very honest stylist.

  • Stubenville

Did she cut her hair herself? With pinking shears?

  • MoHub

Looks like the guy who plays the Sun in the Jimmy Dean commercials.

    • demidaemon

      That’s terrible. I love it.

  • heartbot

I think the dress in a different color and with proper fitting *could* look nice. As is, though, it doesn’t fit at all. It’s so tight through the waist, the fabric bunches up weirdly above her hips in the back and causes the top of the dress to gap out in the back. And through the rear, it’s so tight it actually cuts a horizontal line through her rear-end. The cups of the breasts are so poorly fitted, I hurt every time I look at them. There’s puckering and pulling, and then inexplicably droopy bits in places. It’s baffling.

Plus, foundational undergarments were apparently an afterthought, and her hair and make-up look like she let a high school age friend do them for her. It’s like she’s going to a small town homecoming dance instead of the Golden Globes.

People give her thousands of dollars worth of clothes and accessories in the hopes that she will represent them well, and instead it’s like she goes out of her way to make it obvious she couldn’t give a rip about how she looks. “Look at me! I’m so awesome, someone gave me a few grand worth of stuff to wear to a nationally televised awards ceremony, and I couldn’t be hanged to put on proper underpants.”

  • schadenfreudelicious

I wont comment on the dress since it’s been covered, but please enough with the ridiculous expressions, it’s like amatuer porn face…not that i have seen any :)

  • ThaliaMenninger

Mr Burns: Tell her I hate her.

  • webslice33

i’m sorry..but tattoos look trashy for me
, maybe a small rose or something is fine but not that huge, and random….just my opinion..

    • Kathy

I don’t have a problem with tattoos per se. Some are quite beautiful. However, these look like they were done by a child with a sharpie.

      • webslice33

i was gna include that in my comment haha..that it looks like a kid drew that tattoo :0

  • Dagney

    for fuck’s sake

  • LeelaST

She can’t possibly think this was acceptable…was it some sort of spoof or joke on her part?

  • Ann VerWiebe

It’s the whole booble area that I just can’t accept. The ladies are getting no support and at the same time, the top of the dress is digging into her armpits. That can’t be comfortable! At any point, I was expecting a breast to make a break for it and run free down Hollywood Blvd.

  • Imasewsure

She is NOT one of those rare women who can rock this yellow color… I could have lived with the dress in a better color for her… could have lived with the hair and makeup if she had gone with a 1930′s inspired dress…. can’t live with (or forgive) this however… not her worst for sure though

  • lifeisastory

Too many people forget to check out the side view when trying on a mermaid gown.

  • ChristopherM

Her hair is horrid, and that dress makes her look like a lumpy squash.

  • Maryanne525

The HAIR is what is most offensive to me! Girl, I get you are doing everything on your own, but I’m with TLo, here. If you’ve spent time picking out diamonds for your neck & a fancy damn dress, get someone to do your hairs!

  • http://thatswhatthemoneyisfor.wordpress.com/ lizlemonglasses

I’m so annoyed to have even opened this post.

  • Danielle

You know what, I applaud her for not giving in to convention but JESUS CHRIST the posture.

  • Susannah

Okay, when do we get to make a set of Lena Dunham paper dolls (with horrible posture, of course) and style them ourselves?

  • omg_dora

I think what’s obscuring the issue is that it’s basically a good dress (unlike many outfits that she’s worn that just shouldn’t have been created). It just fits her absolutely HORRIBLY and is accompanied by messy, awkward hair and makeup and posture.

Her hair makes me want to kick someone.

  • Dan_In_NYC

This dress is in no way flattering – and most frustratingly, brings out the yellow in her teeth. And that’s hard to get past, since it’s an easy fix.

  • Jenna621

I saw this and immediately thought, “Why does she hate everyone so much?” Because that is the only explanation for this look: she hates everyone and wants them to suffer. She was probably just pissed that she couldn’t come naked.

  • Carrps

She has lipstick on her teeth. Ugh.

  • Kelly Sowers

Not only is the make-up DIY, the make-up ended up on her teeth.
There is red lipstick on her teeth.

  • Kent Roby

The flowers are really pretty in the third picture; that is literally the only nice thing I can say.

  • Toby Wollin

Wow – that is just speechlessly ugly. First, it’s a color that 99% of human beings cannot wear — it’s basically National School Bus Chrome Yellow. And I do not care how much she said, “Oh, I love this; it’s the sort of dress I’ve always wanted…” I would never have allowed that dress to leave the place on her arm. Period. You need a special shape, a certain height and so on to carry off that sort of dress. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think Lena walked in and said, “Give me the ugliest dress you’ve got that will emphasize every part of me that I don’t want anyone usually to look at,” just to give the fashion equivalent of the finger to the whole affair. Just. Mind-boggling.

  • Bisous3

I caught the part when they were showing her being photographed on that E! Red Carpet show- and thought “she is doing full on choreography, faces and all!” Those poses were definitely rehearsed and that makes it even worse….if Posen actually told her to do that he should be tarred and feathered. And with the cheap feathers they sell by the yard in the craft store.

    • lobsterlen

Cheap craft store feathers in neon YELLOW!

  • French_Swede

Would someone please tell this *Girl* to whiten her teeth? Especially with that yellow dress, her teeth look gruesome.

    • MoHub

I actually find it refreshing to see someone who doesn’t have glow-in-the-dark teeth that one sees before one sees her face. However, she needs to whip the lipstick off her teeth.

      • French_Swede

Maybe *lighten* would be a better word. They don’t have to be that bluish neon color, but with her mousy hair and pale skin she needs some contrast. IMHO.

        • MoHub

I agree that a little treatment would not be bad, but lately, I’ve been seeing parades of overly whitened teeth that look almost threatening.

          • lobsterlen

The other end of spectrum is just as scary. Blinding perfect teeth …yikes! However its not just lipstick here. I’ve seen her before and her teeth looked like that. However my reaction wasnt she needed tooth whitening, it was her teeth need a good professional dental cleaning. I tend towards yellow teeth. It helps just getting them cleaned every 6 months.

        • marlie

Like some other kittens have said, first off, she needs to get the lipstick off of her teeth. THEN she needs to wear a shade of lipstick that will help brighten her teeth rather than make them look darker. That would go a LONG way in improving her makeup. It’s a trick that skilled makeup artists know to resort to, further demonstrating why Lena needs a PRO to do her hair and makeup.

      • Jaeda Laurez

Her teeth are flat out orange- yellow though. Can’t ride with that.

  • rage_on_the_page

WHY does she favor yellow? WHERE ARE HER GAYS

  • Janet B

Why does she looks so dang happy?

  • J. Preposterice

you know what, I like the color on her. but that dress does not fit, holy heckballs.

  • Jaeda Laurez

That dress is too small for her boobs. And that particular yellow is a difficult one for pale folks to wear; it really does look better on tan-to-brown girls, as a rule. And at some point you have to concede that hair is awful.

  • Pound of Salt

Usually I agree with the rest of the world that Dunham could dress a LOT better for her figure, but – especially in the first picture – I think she looks kind of great here! (Okay, the picture from the back is a little cringe-worthy)

  • LJCdoc

    OFFS (Oh, for F*cks sake).

  • Big Bear

What dress? All I see is those tattoos tat look like they were drawn on her by a two year old.

  • snarkykitten

I’m not normally one for teeth whitening, but her teeth look down right brown.

  • LaSylphide

She looks awful, of course. But if you’re gonna look awful, do it in a canary yellow, too tight, unflattering dress that shows off the ugly tatts. I mean, you might as well.

  • ailujailuj

I’m surprised she got digital space on the TLo web ways…

  • Andrea

    1. You’re right, TLo, she so cares . . .
    2. I kind of think she cares so much that she picked out Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano from a few years ago as a “size >2 rocks princessy red carpet” example she thought she might be able to follow.
    3. As size >2s, they’re in a bit of the same camp but not really
    4. It’s kind of the same color but not really
    5. It’s kind of the same silhouette but not really
    6. Does anyone else see this?
    7. Does it BREAK ANYONE ELSE’S HEART?

  • jw_ny

I’d like this more if it were in a different fabric and color, and if the cups weren’t so defined…oh, and if the fit were better/not so tight. Basically, if it were a completely different dress ;~p …j/k. The silhouette works for her, shows her curves, and she seems to be lovin it. Hair could be better, but I like the direction she was going, and it’s unfortunate about the lipstick teeth…looks like she was doing some chaw in the limo.

  • amyfromnj

I’ve never seen that bust treatment look good on anyone. Ever.

    • ailujailuj

totally agree. she has many problems going on here but specifically about this dress – I am not a fan of the little bowl cup boning, personally, mostly because no one’s breasts are – or should be – that shape. so it never fits. ever. and any slight shift of the torso (so many posers like to angle their torso or shift off their hip lines for a sexier pose) creates two main problems I’ve never been able to see past: the cleavage gets shoved lopsidedly out of one of the cups, which makes them look deformed; and the bodice line at the top doesn’t shift so the body looks separate from the dress, which is never good.

  • megohd

I know I’m showing my age, but the tattoos are just ugly to me. I don’t have an issue with tattoos as a rule, but I just feel like Lena’s make her look dirty.

I also hate the one expression where her mouth is kind of open. She just looks dumb.

    • MoHub

I’m an old fart myself, but there are tattoos and tattoos. Some are beautiful, but Lena’s just look dirty.

  • pop_top

I actually really like that dress. It’s just not at all meant for Lena.

  • KELLEYKAT

Preach! You nailed it! And there must be a better lip product that she should be using to keep it off of her teeth! Accckkk!! Wonky posing too. Worst.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I can see the idea of putting her in a form fitting gown, but this was not the one.

  • e jerry powell

Now I’m seriously glad I didn’t even look up when Dunham was announced on the red carpet. That look is a travesty.

  • Laylalola

The dress fits — it’s that she has zero tone to her bod (and is proud of it, obviously).

  • SassieCassy

    bah. nope

  • formerlyAnon

She has no people and her friends are all fashion-impaired. Did no one at Zac Posen have any input? It’s not as though she’s doing anything for their reputation here, either.

  • deelup

Lena KILLS me because as a woman with a very similar shape to hers (chunky and pear shaped) I would LOVE for her to look amazing. It’s like she’s trying to prove that pear shaped women can’t look nice.

  • Trickytrisha

Her hair looks like it hasn’t been washed for a few days (nor combed, for that matter). The exaggerated poses are pathetic. I swear she smeared lipstick on her teeth. All that’s missing is the extended middle finger.

  • teensmom99

Wine or forest green with a different bustular arrangement and we would be singing a different tune.

  • Clair Ellis

Based on the second photo alone she cared. And third photo, honey, no. I just can’t with her. That dress is awful and I am sorry, but I hate her tattoos. I have them but if I needed them to be covered up they sure as shit would be.

  • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

In case you’re curious about what my hair looks like on particularly bad hair days when all I can do it put on a hat — now you know. Lena’s modeling it to a t. I so wish she’d simply pick a side and stick to it — “I don’t care” and show up in a pair of jeans and a biker jacket or actually admit that she cares and go all in.

  • brown-eyed girl

At first glance, I thought “huh, okay.” And then I saw how badly it fits. Really unfortunate.

  • Nimith

I’ll never understand why designers continue to loan her stuff for the red carpet. Given that the purpose of doing so is to showcase and promote their work, WHY ON EARTH would you pick a star that consistently looks bad while doing so?

  • melanie0866

I think she’s just effing with us.

  • ZnSD

I just can’t with her. She’s just dreadful.

  • Lily-Rygh

And why in God’s name is she making those ridiculous porn-still facial expressions?? No, no, no, Lena. I love, but no.

  • Dreamwr8tr

From a purely aesthetic point, I don’t understand why designers ever lend this girl clothing. It’s offensive to me — it’s almost as if they’re throwing clothing at her specifically so they don’t have to lend clothing to other plus size/non sample size actresses so they can say, “See, I can’t do this! You’re going to make my clothing look terrible like Lena Dunham.”

  • Closet Crisis

First time poster here and have my shyness overcome by my feelings about Ms. Lena and her antics. Look, I get it. While I’ve never watched any of her work, if I’m to take any of the comments/reviews on the net with any credulity, Lena is a very talented and driven young woman. But Lena dear, you’re in the media…the entertainment business for crisssakes. If you don’t like how the media treats women, fine, write/speak about it to your heart’s content. But please dress/stand like a grown up, when you’re invited to a big ass party. Because people will remember you in a far more positive glow, had you worn a “boring old establishment-type” dress, or even a thriftstore vintage find. Just look at Diane Keaton. She found her sartorial “safe zone” and has stuck with it for over 3 decades. No one thinks she needs to be in a gown for her to be taken seriously as an artist. Oh, and I checked Lena’s stats (linked by a poster above), and I’m about the same shape/size as you, and trust me, if a plebian like me can find gowns/dresses to attend the annual company Christmas party without having an existential crisis, Ms Lena here should be able to leverage her showbiz connections to dress appropriately.

This woman is not pretty. She is not glamorous. Instead of “celebrating her curves”, which is the look she was going for, she chose to wear a dress that makes her look like she so very badly wanted to fit into a size 4 at all costs. I am sure she needed the jaws of life to put that sucker on. ALL that being said, because she is the antithesis of a glamorous Hollywood actress, she needs to style and present herself in a cutting edge way i.e. – I am clearly not Charlize Theron, but I am still a rock star because my personal style screams ridiculously cool. Lipstick on the teeth, weird poses, and a bad set of tattoos – could this be what hunny boo boo likes like in 15 years???

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

Should charactor actors make their teeth white or straighten them…I dont think so. This is an extreme case of lipstick on teeth.

  • Sunraya

EVerything about this is so wrong, but the worst part is her posing that seems to vamp it up. Why can’t anyone help this girl get her own style?? No, she is not glamorous, she is not even that pretty, which is all fine. She is talented and funny. Lots of great actresses aren’t glamorous. But this is just embarrassing. Yes, we get that she likes her tattoos, but they just don’t go with a very formal gown. She needs to hire you guys to help her find her style. What would you put her in ?? Maybe one of the funkier Herreras from the Spring 2014 collection? One with sleeves.

  • Jacob Bowen

Zac Posen has been SCREWING women over for a WHILE now. He kept instagramming how “AMAZING” she looked and supposedly (according to her interview on E!) told her make the “S” with her body….which is essentially amplifying her AWFUL posture. HORRIBLE.

  • bellafigura1

Absolutely on the clothes, but also, please, someone help her with posing! She looks absolutely ridiculous. As with everything about her — her writing, her acting, her clothing — I can’t figure out if she’s being ironic or clueless or defiant. Whatevs, the faces and boop-boop-di-do thing is just, massively UGH.

  • Eve Farren Farber

Her teeth are normal people teeth.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

Which is actually a nice change of pace from the over-whitened chiclet one-giant-tooth look.

  • LuxLisbon

I’m not a fan of that colour in general. It’s way too Strictly Ballroom. I’m scared she’s going to screech “Scott!” and then start crying.

  • kimmeister

The dress itself has a buttcrack. This is one for the “worst of” list for sure. I feel sorry for her armpits, which must still have a crease in them from that poor bodice fit.

  • demidaemon

She really needs to retire the strapless silhouette, as it does nothing for her, and this dress is all kinds of unflattering on her. Lena, you could be beautiful; instead, you are showing everyone how not to pick out the right gown for your body shape.

    • Susan Velazquez

Didn’t TLo write about that once? I can’t find the post but it was like, “Someone must have told Lena her best feature was her shoulders because that would explain the strapless dressed.”

      • demidaemon

I think they or someone in the comments must have said this at some point.

The strange thing about them on her, though, if they actually do not make her shoulders look great. If she really wanted to show them off, she would do better with dresses that had more of a structured shoulder. I think she picks them because she wants to show off her upper body tattoos.

        • Susan Velazquez

Yeah it was a commenter when she wore Reed Krakoff. The comment was by Agatha Guilluame and it went, “I get the feeling that one time long ago when pressed for an answer to “What do you think is my best feature?” a beleaguered stylist quickly gave Miss Dunham a once over and unable to find a “best feature” settled said for the only thing on her that wouldn’t make a baby cry and said “Your creamy white shoulders Lena.” And therein lies the answer to why someone who clearly needs boning and straps and spanx keeps giving us formless and strapless.” And funny thing is, it still applies here.

  • Pennymac

I hate dresses, especially strapless ones, that have those boob envelopes. They NEVER look good. And in caution yellow, no less.

  • Knightley

At least the gown matches her teeth…..

  • Nicola Anna Molly Page

Disregard the colour, but the dress would be so lovely if it were fitted properly. Why is this an issue?

  • Lune

There is no way this was made for her. If Posen knows her body so well, he would know that the gap between the cups on the dress is for a woman with a wider spread between her boobs. Lord love her, Lena’s got cleavage — so don’t give her a dress that fights it! It’s one of her actual assets.

  • dschubba

It’s rare that a gown hits every wrong place on the wearer’s body, but it’s kind of happening here. At first glance, I thought it was simply a size too small, but when she turned to the side it became obvious that it’s just Not Her Dress. The color almost works for me, though. Maybe more of a goldenrod?

    I wish she’d hire some pros. :/

  • Kelly

On “school picture day” when I was in the 10th grade, I woke up with the worst bad-hair day ever. This was before blow-dryers (yeah, I’m old), so I was pretty much stuck with it. I tried wetting down the worst sticky-up bits and bobby-pinning the others. When picture-time came, I took out all the bobby pins (or so I thought), smiled, and hoped for the best. When the pictures arrived, my hair looked pretty much exactly like this — flyaway, frizzy, sticking-out, and yes, with a rogue bobby pin I’d missed.

I took one look at myself and burst into tears. Even my mother, who would have told me I looked good even if I’d been a dead-ringer for Boris Karloff in “Frankenstein,” admitted that my hair “normally looked better.”

And presumably Lena actually *paid* someone to do her hair like this.

  • KayEmWhy

She doesn’t even make the attempt to stand up straight. She reminds me of the person who just slaps something on and goes to an job interview. Sorry hun, but your appearance especially in Hollywood does matter. This whole look from head to toe is horrible, and disrespectful to the venue. Get a stylist for goodness sake!!!

  • elzatelzabelz

UGH. She clearly cares, she wants to prove some sort of point. Fine, but wear things that flatter you while you prove whatever you’re trying to prove. It can be done. Also, Stand up straight.

  • Danielle Colman

What strikes me – in the one picture that doesn’t show how distractingly awful the dress is – is that she has a completely adorable smile. Based on her smiley-face alone, that’s a gal who could have so much fun with some crazy prints and colours. She should find a silhouette that flatters her and then get it in twenty different look-close-and-laugh prints; I feel like that would match her personality so much better than all the swing-and-a-miss high fashion attempts.

  • quiltrx

I know it’s not REALLY anything to me or to do with me…but it still offends my sensibilities a little bit that someone who is a successful entertainer and gets to attend the Golden Globes in a high-fashion designer gown (for fuck’s sake) shows up with DIRTY HAIR and lipstick on her teeth!
And WHOEVER was involved in putting her in this gown should be ashamed of the fit. It looks so unflattering AND horribly uncomfortable. With a good fit, clean hair, and a black/white houndstooth clutch, I think she could have rocked this!
(Oh, and that necklace wants to come live at my house.)

  • CeeQ

Oh awful. She needs a stylist like it’s her life. And her hair! Darlings. Hot mess. I looked better rolling out of bed this morning than her hair does in those pics.

  • bertkeeter

Just cover up those TATS for god sake!

  • D J H

I agree with what T&Lo said (of course!) but this is the first dress I’ve seen Lena Dunham in where she DOESN’T look like she thinks she’s “a fat girl showing Hollywood that all sizes are beautiful THREE EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!” I don’t think she’s fat/overweight, and it’s always bothered me that she dresses as if she thinks she is, even though for her that means MY! NON-HOLLYWOOD-SIZED! BODY! IS! BEAUTIFUL! Every woman, regardless of weight and size, has to consider clothing proportions and styles when trying to look their best. Saying that she doesn’t look great in mis-proportioned clothing that is the wrong style for her figure isn’t a fat-discrimination thing. And, BTW she’s NOT FAT.

As bad as this dress is, it shows that she’s got a lovely figure, and I find the strapless back framing the tattoo to be striking. That said, throw the dress in the fireplace NOW.

  • Glammie

Late to the party, but she doesn’t have a stylist? WHYYYY? Dunham desperately needs a stylist. Her proportions are a challenge (short torso, short neck while broad-shouldered), but stylists know how to deal with that. Part of the teeth problem is the lipstick shade. A stylist could have helped her there, too. Some actresses can do without stylists. Dunham’s not one of them.

    • Lune

      I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE

      • jjtxgrrl

        Awesomeness.

  • Gatto Nero

I give up. It’s too exhausting.
Yes, this isn’t her dress, for a thousand reasons — but even the *fit* is horrendous.
Can’t she see that? Has she no friends to tell her?
But she looks so pleased with herself. Should we all just be happy for her and be done with it?

  • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

So…apply lipstick to teeth and blot, then?

  • katiessh

i hate the stupid boob cup things. why are there all these dresses like that these days? boobs do not need cups!

  • DeTrop

Just in case we were taking the RC too seriously, LD always brings us back to earth – most times with a thud. Thanks for the comic relief.

  • guest2visits

Going to go against the tide…but I didn’t hate the dress on her. At least not from the front, the back appears to be uncomfortably tight.
I liked her hair even. It was cute on her. The lipstick on the teeth – no. And the giant tats are horrendous to me, but you already know that. In fact, it’s the tattoos that ruin it for me. I don’t mind the silly poses here either.
Are there better silhouettes for her to consider besides the whole world of sleeveless, strapless dresses that she seems to love; hell yes, but surprisingly this wasn’t her worst choice.

  • Judy_J

Quite possibly one of the worst looks I’ve ever seen her in, and that is saying something.

  • allcapsERINN

I feel sad because I think she really likes this dress.

  • MaggieMae

The day will come when she will get this RC stuff right, and we will be bowled over. Come on, Lena, you can do it! This ain’t it.

  • Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

Little girl playing in Mommy’s dress up box, posing in front of the mirror. She needs a hairbrush in one hand to use as a microphone. Or maybe a banana, since it would match her dress.

  • Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

…and her cleavage doesn’t line up with the cups of the dress. That is bringing out my OCD, something fiece. I just wanna yank on that dress and pull it into place. Cups are clearly too small.

  • stacey

Her hair reminds me of a three year old, you know before their hair grows in all the way? She seems to go out of her way to don any and every unflattering look. And then tatoos. sweet Jesus on a cracker’
