Laverne Cox at ELLE’s Women in Television Celebration

Posted on January 23, 2014

There are two things we love about this right off the bat:

“Orange is the New Black” star Laverne Cox attends ELLE’s Annual Women in Television Celebration in West Hollywood, California.

1. That we’ve reached the point in our culture when a mainstream celebrity and fashion site like ours can feature a celebrity transgender woman on the red carpet.

2. That she didn’t fuck it up to the point where we’d have to yell at her. She’s gorgeous and the dress is cute and interesting.

Having said that, while this look gets points for being bold and visually interesting, it also skirts right up to the line of ice dancer.  The netting in the skirt did not need the visual callback in a pair of fishnets. And the white horizontal line would look terrible on just about anyone. A thin red belt and a pair of black tights (or sheers) would fix this right up. Also, a ring or bracelet would be nice.

When are you coming back into our lives, Orange is the New Black?

Don’t love the open toe shoes, but otherwise super cute.

    • BayTampaBay

      Especially with hose or tights.

  • Latin Buddy

    Two points:

    1) yay for our trans sisters! Can’t believe we are moving towards that acceptance where not only if she on red carpet, she has a viable acting career.

    2) As great as this looks…gurl, no on the hair. I HATE two tone hair.

    • marlie

I usually hate two-toned hair, but it works on her this time.

      • alyce1213

2-tone is not my favorite either, but hers looks nice and smooth and soft, not raggy.

        • Anna

I agree, I think it looks very pretty on her.

      • Imasewsure

I think it works here because she didn’t go full Kardashian/JLo/Paula Patton skin tight mini on the outfit. Her very very cute sexy but demure dress makes me ignore the ombre of her hair and just like the overall look. No love for the shoes though…

    • MilaXX

I think the hair is a step up cause her weaves always look a bit plastic to me.

    • VioletFem

Agreed on all points! The darker hair she sports on OITNB looks way better on her.
I hope her and Candis Cayne continue to have a long and fabulous career.

      • marlie

        I love Candis Cayne – she’s GORGE.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I was so pissed off when Elementary had this big song & dance about OMG transgender, and they’ve only used Miss Hudson for about 3 minutes in one episode! Candis Cayne is better than that.

        • fursa_saida

SO ANNOYED. She’s supposedly at their house once a week! Did she suddenly turn invisible and noiseless? Is she at a perfect replica of the brownstone where there are no television cameras? THE TORTOISE HAS HAD MORE SCREEN TIME.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I know! She’s not a freaking brownie, she won’t leave if you see her!

          • fursa_saida

You have no way of knowing this, but I am a fairy tale fanatic (there is at least one person on the internet who refers to me as “the fairy lady”) and therefore you could not have made me happier with a reply than you just did.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I do love a good fairy tale!

        • VioletFem

I recently heard she is on Elementary as Ms Hudson, which is the first bit of news about that show that actually sparked some interest for me. I can’t believe she only got three minutes, though. Ms. Hudson gets a significant amount of screen time on the BBC Sherlock. I really do hope that Elementary brings Candis back for more epiosdes. It would be such a waste to not feature her more.

          • fursa_saida

Well, it is more than three minutes–that’s an exaggeration–but yeah, she was in one episode and then nothing. It sucks.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I really don’t like fishnets with open-toed shoes, and the dress is a bit wet-suity, but it’s not a bad effort, for her first visit to T.Lo Towers.

  • hughman

She woke up like this… flawless. J’adore.

  • Diego!

Since I don’t know her, and I’m not being rude…. is she a drag? She looks like RuPaul’s daughter!

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

She’s a transgender woman. So not drag, no.

      • Diego!

        Thank you!

    • @Biting Panda

      To quote our hosts:

“That we’ve reached the point in our culture when a mainstream celebrity and fashion site like ours can feature a celebrity transgender woman on the red carpet.”

      Transgender. Not “a drag”.

      • Diego!

Sorry I didn’t know her! Peace!

        • MilaXX

It’s cool, we can’t all be couch potatoes.

    • MilaXX

Transgendered actress from the show Orange is the New Black.

      • Emily Rose

Keeping in line with the linguistics talk, It’s transgender, without the -ed at the end. (Think of it as that you wouldn’t call someone gayed or lesbianed.)

        • sugarkane105

I learn so much from this blog.

        • ailujailuj

depends… after a fun night, you could have been lesbianed. . .

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I just had a mental image of Bill Murray in Ghostbusters, in a jumpsuit with slime all over his face, saying “I’ve been lesbianed”…

          • ailujailuj

heh… the ultimate fantasy of ANY self-respecting ghostbuster.

    • boweryboy

LOL. I’m sure she could be a drag if you caught her in a bad mood, but I think she would be a lot of fun to hang out with.

*ducks from rotten tomatoes being thrown*

      Sorry. I couldn’t resist.

      • Diego!

Hahaha you are the only one who is not punishing me for my question

        • Verascity

Come on, dude. People corrected you. No one attacked or punished you.

      • Introspective

        Ha! Pitch perfect…

She looks pretty fab here. Her makeup is gorge. Dress fits like a glove but definitely a smidge short.

By the way- I suspect she is TONS of fun to hang out with. In her past life she worked as a dancer/performer at Lucky Cheng’s in the Lower E Side some years ago… She gave me a lap dance on my bachelorette night for the GODS. my girl can dance her ass off. And was such a sweetheart. Id hit a bar or club with her anytime!!

Was so happy to see her move on up in the world to a hit show cause even way back then she oozed star quality…

  • jspark

Oh no… she’s using Michael Jackson’s plastic surgeon. I hardly recognized her.

    • MilaXX

I think that’s mostly makeup contouring.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

“Kardashian Kontouring, how may I direct your call?”

    • Verascity

Yeah, she’s looking a little… refreshed in these, but I think it’s the makeup. I definitely prefer her look on OITNB.

      • Maryanne525

Agreed. Her blush is a little heavy-handed here. Although, I’d probably do the same thing walking in front of the cameras.

        • demidaemon

I was afraid to mention that, but I though the same. I don’t think she needs as much spaeckle as she’s putting on. I think the style of the hair isn’t great either. It would look much better pulled back, but not the dreaded cocker spaniel version.

  • marlie

No complaints from the neck up – she looks great. I don’t love the dress, though. it’s ice-skater-ish, and too juvenile, with that high waist. But for a first-time TLo appearance, she gets a “not bad.”

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

“Too juvenile” is exactly how I would describe the dress. And I don’t like the white piping at all — doesn’t make any sense to me.

  • MilaXX

I don’t mine the dress. Hair & makeup are giving me Ciarta realness. The shoe is the downer here. I’d like a fierce stiletto bootie, instead.

    • Sarah

Yeah, the shoes are where it goes wrong for me. Booties would work, esp. because she has legs from here to the sky.

    • alyce1213

Yes to boots. My thoughts exactly.

    • ailujailuj

excellent… but – boots that are tight to the calf. I’m growing weary from all the wide-topped boots I’m seeing destroying some cute outfits.

      • MilaXX

I was thinking more along the lines of a shoe bootie.

        • ailujailuj

excellent. I’m too short for the booties – but they always look pretty great on long legs. specially hers.

    • decormaven

      Good call!

    • SpillinTea

I’m glad I’m not the only one seeing Ciara here. Between Laverne and Camila Alves, I keep having double-Ciara-vision.

  • Sarah

I read OITNB isn’t coming back on ’til MAY. Dammit. Probably tryna get the off-season network viewers. I heart Laverne’s character SO MUCH on that show. And there was one helluva cliffhanger for the final ep so I MUST KNOW what happens….

    • Sobaika

      MAY???

      • Sarah

Maybe I’m mistaken? It is still filming right now, with a wrap set for February. So maybe a little earlier? WE CAN ONLY HOPE.

        • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

If last year was any indication, I wouldn’t count on an earlier release. The first season was supposed to come out in May of 2013, but didn’t until July…

  • @Biting Panda

‘Sophia’ is one of my favorite OITNB characters. Am I allowed to be bummed that she appears to be going to the Kardashian School of Beauty? Because I am.

    • Sobaika

The Kardashian School of Beauty got a lot of its notes from drag and transgender communities.

      • Sarah

And I would hazard that if you put Ms. Cox up next to a Kardashian, she’d look better.

        • KinoEye

Are you kidding? No contest. She’s more fierce, and lovable, than they’ll ever be.

          • Kent Roby

Plus, Ms. Cox has actual TALENT. Game over.

          • KinoEye

No kidding! She made me all misty-eyed more than once during OITNB. The most emotion any Kardashian has made me feel is indifference.

        • marlie

And she’d still look like she’s wearing six pounds LESS makeup than any Kardashian.

      • @Biting Panda

Fair. But disheartening none the less. I’m growing so weary of these homogenized ideas of beauty. And I think I have an instinctively negative reaction to all things that resemble KK or the things that KK resembles.

        • ailujailuj

if it were just homogenized ideas of beauty (unfortunate in-and-of-itself), I could ignore it. My ire is raised from an overwhelming saturation of idiocy and nothingness. This KK nonsense is a plague that has infiltrated every facet of our american culture. not because it really has, but because it’s the best marketing machine that money can buy. although I don’t blame KK.

          • marlie

I was with you until your last sentence. I DO blame KK (among others).

          • Sobaika

If s/he meant that the real crime is a society that values X over Y and KK is just an opportunistic evil byproduct, I get it.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I think that’s partly why the Bitter Kittens hearts are soaring with the Lupita ascendency. We see all these white women, and light-skinned women of colour with straightened long blonde hair, as the ideal of beauty and then miss Lupita sails in like a refreshing breeze.

ETA there should be an apostrophe somewhere in Bitter Kittens hearts but I’ve had half a bottle of wine and can’t be arsed to figure out if it is Kittens’ or Kitten’s.

          • fursa_saida

It’s the latter, not that it really matters :) Enjoy your wine!

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Isn’t it after the s with the apostrophe for the possessive plural?

Very much enjoying the wine, thank you. I’ve had a headache all day which paracetamol hasn’t touched and it is taking the edge off.

          • Sobaika

I’m positive it is Kittens’. Enjoy the wine!

          • KinoEye

As a professional grammar stickler, I can say with confidence Sobaika is right!

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

How does one become a professional grammar stickler?

          • KinoEye

Become a copy editor! It’s great fun, though the people whose work you edit don’t like it too much.

          • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Amazing. I did a journalism degree and they always told us that journalists can’t write, they can get stories and the sub-editors do the real writing.

          • ailujailuj

don’t ask me how I know this – but “correcting other’s grammar” was on the Asperger’s diagnosis questionnaire. I embrace it. wtf.

          • fursa_saida

ARGH, I mistyped. It is, as you say, the former. Glad the headache was at least partially vanquished by alcohol. (I have had my fair share of wine tonight myself. Solidarity.)

  • Sobaika

Never can sign off on open-toe shoes with stockings but…

MY GOSH I LOVE HER SO MUCH

  • filmcricket

I want to yank this whole thing down about an inch and a half, and replace those shoes with something fabulous and pointy, but otherwise this is pretty great. I envy her legs.

  • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I would love to see them Swarovski this up for the ice.

That zipper down the middle, at some point that can be unzipped to reveal an amazing Swarowski blinged out leotard.

Hmm.. maybe it has been too long since I watched some ice skating. ;)

  • KinoEye

Agreed with TLo’s recommendations, but she looks beautiful. One of my favorites on Orange. I want nothing but great things for her!

  • mickiemonkey

Oh this makes me happy. She is beautiful and smart and she is owning it.

  • Jessica Freeman

Don’t the she needed the fishnets at all, and certainly not with peep toes. Gorgeous otherwise.

  • Eva_baby

I was so mesmerized by how pretty she is that I never even looked at the outfit. Blasphemy, I know.

  • LJCdoc

I think she looks great, and I love the fishnets, although not the shoes.

  • MsAfroCAN

Not sure about the pose, but lovely dress. I like how she’s not trying to hard and I need me some more OITNB!

  • TT

I’m gonna allow the fishnets, because her legs look amazing.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

For me, everything’s working but the shoes and the visible zipper. Gorgeous!

  • Haley Buchanan

Love her! I’m not wild about the stockings either, but she looks fantastic. Loving Laverne both on the red carpet and in her role on OITNB!

  • Cathy S

She looks gorgeous. I like the idea of the white stripes, I’m just not sure about the placement.

  • Lily-Rygh

I love her and I love OITNB, but I HATE any type of stocking with open-toe shoes, and her eyeliner is like WHOA! It seems like she normally gets it a bit closer to right than this, not quite so Ice Capades and cheeky… or am I just being bitchy and overly critical?

  • MannahattaMamma

She’s got the leg cross wrong somehow & with legs that long, it’s understandable, but she sort of looks like she’s about to curtsey, which in a skirt that short would be a dicey proposition… And stance notwithstanding, I applaud Points #1 & 2, absolutely. yay.

  • Wendy Todd

Posing her ass off! She gives good face too. A bit of a Wendy Williams look to the hair.

  • SportifLateBoomer

The symmetry of the dress is freaking me out. To me it looks like she’s standing next to a mirror and it’s a reflected image, or photoshopped as such. Does that make any sense? At all?

Love her confidence and presence! “I’m sexy and I know it.”

  • Lilithcat

I hate this dress. There is way too much going on. Random white stripes, visible zipper, netting – I don’t know who the designer is, but whoever it is should learn to edit.

  • littlevase

Not a fan of her reedy overarched perpetual surprise eyebrows, and the fact that although I have no idea how old she is, the dress reads too young, too short.

  • lunchcoma

I don’t care for either the zipper or the shoes, but yes, this is fine.

I’m hoping that OITNB opens up some doors for her and that she continues to receive work – she’s a talented actress.

  • Janet B

A few pieces of jewelry would have been a nice addition, along with a different shoe.

  • Tracy_Flick

I don’t love the hair (roots, basset hound shape), makeup (heavy round-the-eye liner), or styling (fishnets – WTF? And with peeptoes!). Also, it must be a trick of the lighting, right? Those shoes aren’t actually dark brown?

Otherwise, she looks great. The dress is a good mix of cute and edgy.

  • Bexxx

Did y’all see her Couric interview with Carmen Carrera? It was really incredible. They were both asked some really intrusive and inappropriate questions and they answered them with such poise, class, and intelligence. She is truly a “possibility model.” I actually love the dress and the hair but everything from the hem down needs to go-except the legs of course. Can’t wait for the return of OITNB.

    • demidaemon

      No, thankfully. But unsurprising, unfortunately.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like the dress, but it’s too short for her, is she very tall?
Her makeup needs to be blended.
The shoes are terrible and have nothing to do with the dress. Are the shoes made of brown satin? Yuck.

  • Julie Parr

Hooray for Laverne Cox, changing the world, one fashion post at a time.

  • jilly_d

Omigod, she is fantastic and heartbreaking on OITNB. I’m so thrilled to see her on the RC that I can’t even be objective about those fishnets. GET IT GIRL!

  • willworktomorrow

She’s a hero–an amazing advocate as well as a talented actress. And beautiful as well. But I just can’t get behind tights, hose, anything with a covered toe inside an open toe shoe.

  • Kent Roby

I’m loving seeing this right now; this morning I numbed up the face of a friend who is transitioning to help her get through an electrolysis appointment. I think the fishnets sometimes become default for drag queens (as well as guys who dress as woman prior to transitioning), so maybe Laverne keeps them as a go-to look as well, though I agree that they’re not needed here. In spite of that minor detail, she looks terrific here.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I haven’t had a lot of experience with people who are transitioning, but of the women I’ve met there is a thing about fishnets (and mini skirts etc). It’s like when they were children and first realised that they weren’t like the boys, they latch onto some of the most iconic symbols of femininity because they don’t have the chance to chuck around different feminine personas in the way other teenage girls do. As a cis-woman I got to be a bit gothy and a bit preppy and a bit tomboy and have a year when I only wore green and purple. Transwomen don’t seem to have that opportunity.

    • filmcricket

A trans woman I know said the trick is often to layer the stockings: sheer ones first and then fishnets over top. Gives you support and line that you wouldn’t get with just one or the other. She had fabulous legs, so maybe she was right!

  • Rand Ortega

Delish! Wish the toes were closed but a tiny quibble. Considering the frequency, might be a “me” problem.
Hope she wins an Emmy this year!

  • queeniethebold

i adore her. She is one of my absolute favorites on OITNB. i think she looks very cute here. Her face is so beautiful.

  • ashtangajunkie

Not my favourite dress, but I LOVE seeing her on here (and anywhere else). Can’t wait for OITNB to return.

  • StillGary

Love her and her character but wish she’d go a distinct style route — this says wannabeyonce to me.

    • J. Preposterice

let’s be real though, like 80% of women under 40 want to be beyonce

  • stellamaris73

Love the dress! Black tights and closed-toe shoes would really make it.

I had no idea who this is. She looks pretty.

  • River

Agree about the fishnets, otherwise I think she’s perfect.

  • ewes_urn_aim

Haven’t seen OITNB but I DID see Miss Cox on the Melissa Harris-Perry show this past week and I was impressed with her – both visually and intellectually.

  • Tanya Wade

Her brain is so pretty I don’t mind the fishnets. Luv huh.

  • Trickytrisha

    Nicely done.

  • Susan Velazquez

I love her but the shoe choice was tragic. I don’t understand wearing peep toes and tights.

  • quiltrx

I can’t with the shoes and fishnets, but otherwise pretty cute.

  • Garcia Loca

I don’t care, I don’t care — I love Miss Laverne! And yes, it’s great to see her on T&Lo.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Ach, she gives me such leg envy.

  • LambeeBaby

Peep toes are a miss otherwise FAB!! Dig her lots.

  • Qitkat

I saw this netting the other day when I was looking for a new shower curtain.

  • jjjoy

the brown bow shoes are terrible but i love her and love that she’s featured here
