Kerry Washington in Prada at the 2014 SAG Awards

Posted on January 20, 2014

No, Miss Kerry. We can’t.

“Scandal” star Kerry Washington attends the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California in a Prada ensemble paired with Christian Louboutin shoes and Harry Winston jewelry.

And neither can you.

Dammit. It never goes well when a couple of gay men criticize a pregnant lady for how she’s dressed, but honor and duty demand that we must. Or something.

Look, this is bad. And it’s not bad because she’s showing her beautiful big ol’ belly happily.  That part we don’t mind at all. In fact, we love it for its cheekiness. No, it’s the fact that this silhouette and these proportions turn her into a fireplug. She has no natural shape at all. This is what she looked like earlier in the week. We’re all for comfort in her case, but there are definitely better ways to execute it and still look chic. That top looks entirely too heavy and stiff, and the split on the side coupled with the way it hangs off her, makes it look like she ripped it putting it on. “Busting out of my clothes” is not a good look for anyone.

That skirt is a horror.

I’ll give her points for how ‘in your face, suck it’ the look is. But I agree. This is an atrocity.

  • This silhouette makes me weep sad tears of epic failure. This silhouette should never be seen again, for anyone, anywhere, at any time. It should be removed from the world, perhaps by b6-13 or some other secret unit. Maybe we need a fashion secret service.

But I do love that pink on her. 🙂

    • calimon

      This post inspires awe.

    • Plin

You have finally come up with a socially beneficial use for drones. Kudos.

  • I don’t even mind the idea of an exposed belly on the red carpet, but that skirt is SUCH an unflattering shape. As I said over on the fuggirls, the top would make quite a good choli, so they could get rid of the skirt and stick a sari on her. Also, the lace shoes are tacky and I think the headband looks really juvenile. Call me old-fashioned, but going for a pregnant 15 year old look is a misstep.

    • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

Aikido pants! Bad aikido pants with a choli! There. Maybe she’s trying to do a cross-culture thing? I agree, a sari with that top would be fine, or even some salwar or Anarkali pants with a good dupatta and some very fancy Indian shoes instead if those lace things. Goodness, my mother has a pair of lace shoes bought in the 60’s.

      • TeacherH

I actually thought they were trying to imitate a traditional Korean hanbok, which has a full skirt and short jacket and often uses that shade of bright pink. Remember Miss Korea’s gorgeous national dress for Miss Universe? But hanboks are usually beautiful, and this is hideous.

A salwar kameez is a pregnant woman’s best friend. For that matter, it is the best friend of the middle-aged woman who wants to look good but doesn’t want to deal with her belly pooch.

  • muzan-e

… oh my god. I made that skirt. I made that skirt!

In eighth-grade Home Ec., and I spent the subsequent month trying to work out what on earth I’d done to make my fabulously gothic floor-length shroud go so wrong.

ETA: we were supposed to model our creations at semester-end. A runway. Spotlights. An audience of our peers. I came prepared with a substitute, which I hastily changed into backstage at the very last moment. Yes, it earned me a failing grade. But when it comes to runways, peers, bad skirts and thirteen year old girls of questionable judgement, an unnecessary F is hardly an obstacle.

    • filmcricket

I love everything about this story. Not that you suffered, or got an F, just that the whole thing speaks to me on a really elemental level.

    • Mary229

This is the best post ever.

  • Annarosa

THANK YOU GUYS, I spent the last 3 days thinking the same and feeling bad about it! That’s a relief!

  • SRQkitten

Her look from Golden Globes and this look could be a “Best Dressed/Worst Dressed” double shot.

    • Kathy

      From magic to tragic.

  • KinoEye

Oh, goodness. I really love the idea behind this — baring her pregnant belly and all — but yeah, terrible execution. You’re too beautiful for this, Kerry, and so is your unborn child!

  • ashtangajunkie

‘What the hell happened?’ isn’t a good look for anyone, pregnant or not.

    • Neither is the dog chewed on my top, which I just realised has happened with that wacky pink fringing. This look gets more terrifying the more I look at it.. 🙁

Oh dear sweet jeebus, I just spotted the frangipani beading.. Why did this happen to our fabulous Kerry? WHO ALLOWED THIS. If Fitz were our president for reals, this would never have been allowed.

    • TeacherH

I read somewhere that this was CUSTOM DESIGNED for her by Prada. Is that true? Why do they hate her?

Though that might explain the look on her face. She probably felt like she HAD to wear it. Like when you are a kid and your mom forces you to wear that hideous thing Grandma gave you for Christmas because Grandma is visiting even though Grandma thinks you are six and you are really 13.

      • filmcricket

The takeaway is never allow Prada to custom design anything for you. Lena Dunham’s green and orange flower monstrosity was custom too.

        • demidaemon

It seems custom to Prada means half-assed and ugly.

  • TAGinMO

Eek. I saw a half-second of this look from the waist up when I had the CC awards on in the background Friday night, and I was sure my eyes had deceived me.

Tragically, it turns out they had not.

  • Glam Dixie

I had an audible gasp of horror when I first saw her. This is tragic.

    • jen_vasm

I had a pregnancy flashback when I saw this. Having anything sitting at the same point that her skirt waist is was tremendously uncomfortable – it didn’t even have to be tight or constricting. I don’t know how she isn’t all squirmy. And honestly, she doesn’t look pregnant – just really odd shaped. Prada should stay away from designing specifically for maternity. Far away.

  • Janet B

I can’t imagine how anyone thought that skirt was a good idea.

  • Yolanda13

Kerry’s stylist should be slapped for allowing this her to wear this. We can forgive Kerry and chalk it up to hormones, but her stylist, no. This was bad. Pink is a good color for her though.

    • mamacita32

Rachel Zoe is laughing all the way to the bank…

Im pretty sure she is still Kerry’s stylist.

      • marlie

Further evidence that Rachel Zoe is an overrated hack.

        • mamacita32

Shes great at PR- FOR HERSELF.

      • Yolanda13

If that is the case, chalk this sad choice up to Rachel Zoe’s postpartum. That pink is for the little girl she wanted.

  • Diego!

WORST LOOK EVER in a pregnat woman.
She looks like a piñata! Honey, dear, I know your sensitive right now but is a big NO!

  • Melanie_Bee

First of all, I think she looks great in that shade of pink. Also, I appreciate that she was trying to do something a bit different with red carpet maternity style but . . . I feel like she kind of defeated the purpose. Rather than showing off a cute baby bump, the outfit is just a distraction of ill-fitting lumps and bumps elsewhere (not on her, but in the shape of the clothing).

  • DaveUWSNYC

It looks like her baby bump is coming out from behind in that dress.

    • Mismarker

Agreed. The side view is, by far, the most upsetting.

  • Karen Belgrad

At the Golden Globes, she looked gorgeous. Here… she just doesn’t. The worst part of this is that she doesn’t look beautiful and glowing, the skirt gives her the appearance of a muffin top. I’m truly flummoxed at how that is possible, but it seems as this is truly an evil skirt.

  • jtabz

This is shockingly bad considering how much innate style Kerry Washington has. I’m ready and willing to pretend it never happened!

  • imperfectlaura

If someone had told me the concept of the look, I wouldn’t have hated it. However the execution is not my fave. The fabric choices were less than stellar. The skirt is all kinds of wonky. But my least favorite part is the weird bi-level bottom of the top.

  • kim bunchalastnames

did she … did she just safety pin that sweater to her shoulders?

  • teensmom99

I saw the 2nd picture or something like it on line last night and loved it. I couldn’t see the sides then and loved the way she was playing with a traditional (that is I Love Lucy type) maternity silhouette and loved the colors and fabrics. I loved the jokiness of what then seemed like a small band of flesh. But now I see the other angles and the “ripped open” quality and I am sad that I cannot love this playful experiment. Still, better than Drew’s muu muus any day because I see this as a fashion-y mistake by a fashionista who was having fun.

  • Kent Roby

This is totally Jackie Oh No!

  • Jessica Freeman

Pregnant or not, no one should be wearing that atrocity.

    • Aurumgirl

But, what kind of delusion would you have to sell yourself to believe that this outfit would be flattering or even pretty on a woman who is pregnant? It’s completely disrespectful of the fact that her body has changed but it is still beautiful and should be shown to be that way. This is really the biggest failure of this outfit–it’s like they didn’t care about what she needed at all, but just stuffed her into a generic badly cut taffeta skirt (with box pleats, yet) and a bubble-gum pink belly top.

  • KayEmWhy

Had the fabric of the skirt had some drape to it it might have worked.

    • demidaemon

Maybe. But I would definitely have to see it. I’m still not sold on that top, though. Quite frankly, I think Kerry needed to go home and start over.

      • KayEmWhy

You’re right, but I give her a pass for taking a risk.

  • cocohall

It was apparently very very hot in the southland. I’m seeing some sort of pregnancy hormones meets heat wave fashion apocalypse here. There needs to be a fashion equivalent of FEMA. NOthing short of a helicopter airlifting her from the Red Carpet, taking her to a secret location for an emergency makeover, and then returning her time for the awards would do. Hey, isn’t that sort of the premise of her show? Scandal? I know it is about political missteps, but I see an opportunity to spin this off into the fashion universe. The good news for her is that she can look back later and blame it all on the pregnancy and laugh.

What will be Cate Blanchett’s excuse for that weird draped pink shower curtain?

    • Maybe Cate heard that Kerry Washington was planning to wear the shower curtain to the Oscars and decided to sabotage her?

  • Irys

Actually Kate Hudson pulled off a pregnant belly-baring outfit quite a few years ago, this would be its atrocious-half-sister-hidden-in-the-basement.

    • @Biting Panda

Yep. If you want to work the belly, you’ve to to WERQ the belly. Drop the skirt low and underneath it. Be fecundate, be ripe, be in their face with your reproductive powers. Go big belly, or go home.

  • nancymae

First things first, that pink is absolutely lovely on her and her face is beautiful as always. That concludes the say something nice portion of this comment because that skirt is just rude. I mean, that profile photo… c’mon!! Rowan Fitz Harrison and Puck would all take out that stylist if they were real people

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

Oh, Miss Kerry, how could you?? It has to be the hormonal imbalance that happens with pregnancy is why you made these truly unfortunate choices for your usually fine self. It’s the only thing I could think of. It’s really awful. Did you put this together with a stapler at the last minute because you were bored?

  • SewingSiren

Oh my word. They just split the side seam on a beautifully beaded top and paired it with a horribly altered dirndl. If the top had been worn over an empire waisted sheath in the same hot pink, it would have been stunning. Because the frame with just her face is (stunning).

  • filmcricket

Pregnancy is making her already stunning face even more beautiful, and her head in general looks flawless. That’s all I have to say, because I just can’t with the rest of it. I’m turning my face to the wall.

  • ailujailuj

wtf. there are better ways to honor the belly. this shamed it.

  • @Biting Panda

I think one of the biggest things that Friends gave us, besides The Rachael, was a real change in how pregnant women dressed. Suddenly it wasn’t all smocks and tents, it was belly baring tops, form fitting dresses and low riding skirts all became much more the style. I can see that Fashion It Girl, Ms. Washington wanted to shake things up a bit, stand out from this current pregnancy pack and really make her mark by sparking a a light on a new way of dressing a heavily pregnant woman for formal events. But where she went for “EMBRACE MY UNIQUE FORM” they overshot it and landed straight on “IM AWKWARDLY SHAPED” The appearance that she is so huge that she is busting out of her clothes is terribly unflattering. This isn’t celebrating her form, it’s insulting it.

  • whirligig7

The black bra in that split area looks, at first glance, like out of control armpit hair.

  • MyFavoriteColorIsGlitter

Oh man… This is really bad. I mean REALLY bad. How on earth could she have possibly thought this looked good??? It is SCARY ugly!!! Oh Kerry, I weep…

  • Jecca2244

there are a lot of other (better) ways to celebrate the pregnant belly.

  • nannypoo

    It looks like two lampshades.

  • scoobynacks

There are some shots where that godforsaken skirt makes her not look pregnant, just inappropriately dressed for the red carpet. Combined with that bra showing top, it’s too much material in one place, not enough in another. If you’re gonna honor the bump, wearing what looks like the fabric going around Lady Mary’s mourning bassinet isn’t the way to do it.

  • colleenjanel

She doesn’t even look pregnant in this outfit. She just looks like she’s beet hitting the Golden Corral buffet a little too frequently. NOT FLATTERING AT ALL!

  • Adrianna Grężak

Honestly, she doesn’t even look pregnant. I don’t understand the thought process that went behind picking this

  • Erica_Vuitton

This is a contender for WORST 2014 RC in my book, preggo or not this is just UGLY!. The split crop top is weird.

  • crash1212

I love the color on her and something could be done with that top…maybe with jeans or something for a high-low look – BUT – this looks does not work for her on any level. I’m really shocked because she gets it right so much of the time. This is a huge misstep for her style brigade.

  • Danielle West

I was terrified y’all might like this for some reason. I’m so relieved.

  • EEKstl

Just as you were 95% certain that Lupita Nyong’o’s Golden Globes dress would be on your BEST of 2014 despite it only being January, I feel equally certain (maybe even 98%) that this will be on your WORST of 2014. I can’t fathom what ANYONE in this coterie was thinking.

  • Shawn EH

All the glitter in the world won’t hide a horrid silhouette, she should have gone the route of Drew’s last look.

  • lojoso

Whew! So glad to see someone else feels like I do about this!

  • Anna

You know when you saw pictures of your parents from when they were young and you made fun of them? Kerry’s future children are going to have a blast giving her a hard time about wearing this garbage bag.

  • Aurumgirl

They got her, too. So many Dior fashion victims.

    • Except this was a Prada custom design. 🙂 I do not believe Dior was involved with this train wreck of a design.

      • Gatto Nero

        Prada CUSTOM? For shame!

      • Aurumgirl

What? How did I miss that–it’s right there in black and white. Perhaps its because Prada has been creating red carpet road kill for a little while longer than Dior.

  • DominoEstella

No, Never, Ever should this be worn by any human being.. this would look great on my dog, a little poof skirt and a sparkly cardigan.. so sweet for a japanese chin hosting a house party but not on a pregnant woman and I’ve been pregnant twice so I can judge.

    • Haha – I love the image of a little dog hosting a party!

  • MilaXX

I agree. The top is pretty, but those side slits make me worry about seeing something I shouldn’t. The cut of the skirt is awful. I wish it was just a regular pencil cut. This is nearly as bad as the gingham monstrosity.

  • ElaineMarie34

This could be a candidate for one of those Project Runway do-overs. I can imagine some version of sparkly pink top and black skirt and great shoes, with some sass, and her gorgeous face and hair — and it would work beautifully. I’m just going to think of this as a weak first draft. (And oddly, the more I see it, the more it’s kind of growing on me).

    • Sonny

The sparkly half-top could work over a slimmer cut black maxi dress, maybe?

      • martha

        I thought the same thing!

  • Mismarker

Who green lit this shit? Top to bottom, horrendously unflattering. And, speaking as a lady who’s birthed two little ones, my feet cry for her feet.

  • Oh thank God. I thought I was the only one who thought she looked atrocious. In this era of where Kerry Washington can do no wrong, It was the good ol lets-show-the-world-your-beautiful-pregnant-body bullshit either self inflicted, or spewed by a stylist. Epic fail. It shows off her beautiful pregnant bod in the worst way.

  • JuliaInBlack

Then allow one pregnant lady (13 weeks, whoo hoo) to criticize another – this look is a tragedy, like when the feeling’s gone and you can’t go on sort tragedy. The silhouette just isn’t right at all; she looks wide and squat with a bustle butt and we know from seeing her in that exquisite Balenciaga you guys referenced that definitely isn’t the case. Chalk this one up to placenta brain, lightning crotch or any other gestational malady from which she might be suffering, and hope for a brighter tomorrow.

  • colorjunky

First rule of fashion is PROPORTION (see YSL for sublime examples). This has horrid proportions. Misstep big time Kerry.

    • Gatto Nero

Proportion, silhouette, fit — all bad here.

  • jw_ny

Well, if it’s any consolation, this gay man and Tim Gunn too, as stated on GMA, didn’t care for Kerry’s look either…so you’re not alone. I seriously doubt that you’ll catch any flack for the criticism. Hair and makeup are very pretty tho, imo.

  • MichelleRafter

I would love to see what it would have looked like if she’d pulled the skirt up to right under the girls to give it the appearance of an empire waist, think it would have looked better.

  • It’s like she had decided on this ensemble before the pregnancy really got itself, er, established and just went with it anyway with whatever alterations were necessary to fit her new body.

  • procrastinatrice

This is a disaster of epic proportions…speaking of proportions, the outfit’s are way, way off. The skirt in particular makes me murderous with rage. HOW? WHY?

  • marlie

This was all sorts of awful. Ugly, unflattering, and dated. I mean, that TOP. I just don’t have the words for how awful it is.

  • PastryGoddess

had that skirt been watered silk and sitting below the belly this may have worked MAY i said

  • CeeRich

Absolutely unfortunate. When Bad Clothes Happen to Good People.

  • Dagney

Oh dear. And that pink is so pretty on her! Why not an A line dress made of that pink fabric?

  • SylviaFowler

“People at Wal Mart Red Carpets”

  • lunchcoma

Belly-baring is fine, but that’s the wrong place on the belly. The top looks like it would flip up if not for that oppressive beading, and that ugly mess of a skirt is coming up too high on her.

If she’s not actually carrying in a way that lends itself to showing a little slice of lower belly, then she should skip this look altogether and wear something not cropped.

    • Kappyapp

That is exactly what I was going to say – the way/place it cuts her off is just so odd.

I also can’t help but think this would be really uncomfortable. Or at least, I wouldn’t have been comfortable in it while I was pg.

  • bellafigura1

The skirt, the horror, the horror, Kerry, ayi ayi, my disappointment is boundless.

  • MzzPants

    How unflattering.

  • I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one who thought this was a huge mistake. This two piece ensemble is not doing her beautiful pregnant body any favors. I wonder if this was her idea or her stylist’s?

  • decormaven

I think this is a “Flee Me” design.

    • Oh, my deities. Comment of 2014 thus far. 🙂 LOVE!

  • snarkykitten

That is aggressively ugly, liek her stylist secretly hates her ugly

  • Trickytrisha

I was gleefully waiting for this to appear here. Uncles and BKs have not disappointed.

  • unbornfawn

This outfit is a disaster. The pregnant silhouette is beautiful. Show it off by following the natural curves.

  • anyalama

This is so hysterically bad, I nominate it for one of the top 5 worst looks of 2014, already in January.

  • Jenna621

It’s so sad. There’s a time and a place (and far better ways) to bare the pregnancy belly, but this ain’t it.

  • webslice33

    yes, a disaster it is!!

  • demidaemon

  • bouionice

Awful – this outfit combines every flavor of unflattering in one big mess.

  • That color pink looks great on her, so I love the look from about the shoulders up!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I love that shade of pink on her, but that skirt simply looks bulky and sad. Kerry has looked so much better, so we can write this off as a glitch?

  • Dana

She’s so cute when she smiles and pats her belly I almost can’t criticize her clothes. Almost.

  • She and Julia Roberts both lost a bet.

  • E. D.

One of the worst, and probably the worst of those who actually made an attempt.

  • alyce1213

  • DesertDweller79

Oh my God. I have to stop looking at it. It is horrifying! HORRIFYING! Who allowed her to go out looking like this? No, you don’t get a pass just because you’re pregnant. I’m sorry, but this is Hollywood, so no.

Oh dear, I keep finding more and more terrible things. The hair, the shoes…Oh, I have to stop now.

  • Milos Mom

::sigh:: I want to like it because I like her so much and I feel sooooooo old-fashion saying this but : It is inappropriate to have a bare pregnant belly on the red carpet. Any way you slice it, it will look tacky as hell. Unfortunatly she is short and she is really starting to round out (not that I have an issue with that – she is having a child and that is what the body is suppose to do… but back to her “look”) so she should have gone with the classic empire waist that always looks good on a pregnant woman. It basically never fails.

  • LaSylphide

Agree with the outfit criticisms, but come on. How can you say anything mean to that perfect face?

  • CarrieBaby

Whether she was pregnant or not, this outfit does not do it for me. I get that her stylist/ her are trying to do something different with what is usually worn by pregnant stars but crop tops just aren’t it. On top of that, the skirt is suffocating her belly and leaving those marks on her stomach. She used to wow me with almost everything she wore on the red carpet but lately its been ht or miss 🙁

  • quiltrx

I don’t even know what to say…I’m kind of flabbergasted by the sheer horror of this. The sad thing is, I would like the top if it were finished and a normal top length (I don’t even mean for a preggers lady, I mean for ANYONE)…and I like the color of the skirt with the top, but man is it made weird.
Is there a child standing under there where her ass should be? What is WRONG with this skirt?

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

Hormones will make a woman do crazy things. Just sayin’.

  • GTrain

    Good lord that is bad.

  • CommentsByKatie

Oh no! This has to rate among my worst EVER. Incredibly awful, from the boring skirt shape rendered in puckery seams to the exposed pregnant midriff (I want to say that there is nothing wrong with that in theory, but deployed horribly here) to the…just ugh. I can say no more.

  • katiessh

    this is just so odd

  • Reality TV Casting

thank you tlo. those crackheads who fun the fashion section of jezebel gave me acid reflux but this cured it

  • Closet Crisis

Uh….NO. Let’s just chalk it up to her hormones disrupting her usually spot-on fashion brain.

  • Qitkat

The only thing I can applaud is having the verve to show off one’s beautiful pregnant belly, but honey this is not at all flattering.

  • amaranth16

  • Carolyne

Not to mention that the top hangs all crooked and wonky and that fringy edge looks kind of “Grandma’s toaster cozy” or some such thing….

  • Joy

I’m pregnant right now and I’m just confused by this choice. She is showing the part of my pregnant belly I hate the most..the upper belly. That is where your stomach & fat just gets kicked up by the baby. I saw it and thought to myself, why is she showing her upper belly fat!! They could have done some sort of dress that showcased her entire pregnant belly. Maybe something shear in the middle. I don’t know, this is just horrible.

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

In that last shot it looks like her ASS is pregnant instead of her belly.

  • Fred Vaughn

That is too wrong in too many ways.

  • allcapsERINN

  • e jerry powell

I can’t really blame this one on Kerry, though. MIUCCIA MADE THIS CUSTOM.

  • samo_samo

I do love that shade of pink on her. That’s all.
