Kate Mara in Michael Kors at the 2014 AFI Awards

Posted on January 12, 2014

The awards season fashion has been getting more and more serious as the tension mounts, so it’s kind of nice to see someone looking bright and fresh.

Kate Mara attends the 2014 AFI Awards Luncheon in Beverly Hills, California in Michael Kors.

Michael Kors Spring 2014 Collection

And we are THRILLED to see a gal sporting a substantial belt on the red carpet. It’s been something of a rarity lately. Too many outfits that needed a belt went without one because some stylist was trying to stay true to the latest micro-trend.  We hate the personality-free shoes and we think she’s sporting way too much in the way of shoulder pad, but it’s a cute, head-turning look.

Now, can we talk about how bad her hair looks? Or that her makeup job gives the illusion that she’s a pair of eyes floating on an otherwise featureless face? What the hell’s THAT all about?

The skirt needs to be 3 or 4″ longer to balance those MAHOOSIVE shoulderpads. Bad hair, bad shoes, needs a bracelet and lipstick.

      • UsedtobeEP

PLus that skirt is just too short for January. And for Kate.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

      Shaggy dog hair, no.
I am still mystified with the prevalence for obviously spring looks in the depths of one of the worst winters in memory. Not saying I dislike her in this, cause I don’t. I’m just scratching my head here.

      • MilaXX

I don’t know if it’s because folks are happy to see sunshine or not, but I’ve seen a few pics from this event and lots of the ladies went for very summery looks.

        • ms_kat

It’s been ranging between the high 60s to low 80s, usually setting in the mid 70s for the past three weeks here in Southern California. These looks would be out of place in New York or Chicago, but for here, temp wise, they are right. What would look awkward would be a heavy dress.

          • MilaXX

Considering we’ve been in negative degrees and had snow, ice & all kinds of crazy weather, I have to say if I was in LA I might want to celebrate the sunshine as well. It’s just a bug disconnect to see such summery looks while most of the country is freezing.

          • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

That’s what I was thinking. The dresses are probably appropriate for the weather in SoCal.

    • Sarah

Those shoulder pads! Shudder. And same for the shoes. Pretty pretty colored dress though.

    • bellafigura1

I like it! I may have to revise my I-hate-everything-Michael-Kors … although on second look, it’s not an earth-shaking design. It’s just, as you say, bright and fresh. And I’m ok with the hair, she’s a kid, they defy for fun!

      • LadyLuck777

I can’t really think of her as a kid anymore after the Kevin Spacey oral sex scene.

    • ailujailuj

      I L U H U V V the model’s stompers…. damn.

      • MilaXX

I usually dislike those types of shoe, but they work with the belt.

        • ailujailuj

the belt could just pose there all by itself.

        • decormaven

Even if she hadn’t gone for the runway’s footwear, she should have chosen a shoe in the same leather color. Those light-colored shoes with the heavier-colored belt makes the look unbalanced to me.

    • MilaXX

I like the dress/belt, but everything else is wrong. That ombre blonde do’ went 2 shades wrong at the end and the makeup artist compounded that mistake by setting the makeup gun to corpse.

      • Spicytomato1

“…makeup gun to corpse.” Lol, brilliant. Yes, it’s the makeup that really kiils the look for me. Maybe she needs that hair for a role, so I’ll give her a pass, but fresher makeup would’ve complemented the spring-y dress much better.

        • MilaXX

Really just a touch of a peachy lip would have balance that hair/makeup out.

      • Spreecord

An Olsen head on an 80s executive’s “I feel pretty” dress. No. Bad. Fail.

      • charlotte

And her hair looked so great at the “Her” premiere, just a couple posts back.

    • jennifromcali

It’s good to see a belt, but it’s kinda fugly…does it “go” with the dress? By that I don’t mean color, but the dress is happy, springy, light and the belt looks like it should go horseback riding or something.

    • jilly_d

The proportions are all wrong on this. And I have to disagree about the shoes; I think they have good “personality” for a pair of nude pumps. But they were probably not the right choice for this dress. And I wish she would go back to the auburn hair – she looks Sienna Miller dull with this blonde.

    • Ceur

      I hate that belt.

    • frannyprof

She comes from a family with a shitload of money. NO excuse for the bad dye job.

      • ailujailuj

not sure I agree about the hair. I’m not for it but I do think it is intentional and part of the look. I think it’s supposed to look like that – juxtapose the darlingness of the fresh grass-green frilly romper with the dark roots, a little zhouzhy… haphazard…hungry homeless heroin addict teenager look for the hair. she should have also done something with the face – to pull it off.

    • sagecreek

So cute! Excpt for the fried hair. As fanny said right below, you have money, there just ain’t no excuse for that.

    • ailujailuj

    • Blair Sylvester

She looks fully thawed out from her photo shoot

    • AmeliaEve

This is the same color palette as the Michael Kors outfit Naomie Harris was wearing. I like it! This is a cute dress, and I like the contrast of the bold belt with the silky dress.

    • heartbot

Lipstick that is not the same shade as her skin would have saved her make-up, I think.

    • guest2visits

Such a pretty print & color; love the belt and all, but I felt that the proportions are a bit skewed because of the shortness. Makes the belt appear too hefty for it. The shoes are kind of invisible; like the model’s better for it. Still very pretty though.

    • jw_ny

I’ve been seeing this messy bob hair style on others lately…I know it’s intentional, but I don’t get it. It looks like it was cut with a weed-whacker and then towel/air dried.

    • MissWix

It’s been in the upper 70’s in LA. I’ve barely needed to wear a sweater in the evenings.

    • greymain

      yeah…the hair…WTF??? AND the duo-tone. geeeeeez.

    • WendyD

      The hair is a CRIME.

    • RussellH88

I didn’t even recognize her, I thought it was just some bland starlet I’ve never heard of.

    • quiltrx

I think the shoes should have been closer to the belt color. It’s like her legs are slowly disappearing, starting at her feet.
That hair looks like a nightmare. I’m sure she paid a lot for that tragedy, but it looks like she botched a bathroom-sink dye job to me.

    • DagnyReardon

With her family money and connections she could have Joe Namath’s hair dresser on retainer.

    • Little_Olive

OK with the idea of a belt, not on board with that one on particular for this dress (which is cute) at this event -too “country club”. And the break is so severe that her body looks sorta disproportionate.

Anyway, seems like putting the belt on took so much energy it rendered her unable to sit for hair and makeup.

    • Dan_In_NYC

Love the IDEA of a substantial belt. Somehow the simplicity of the dress is a really great canvas to feature a fantastic belt. I’m not at all in love with this specific belt, though. I looks a little, uh, chip.

    • ThesisMonkey

Love this dress, but would also like to see the shoulders turned down a bit. I like a big belt but I REALLY don’t like this one. It’s not the color, so I don’t know what it is. Maybe it just looks plasticy? Hate the shoes. I think lip color would save the makeup situation. And there must be something wrong with me because I’m not offended by the hair.

    • In_Stitches

Love that shade of green and the shape is fun so it’s a full on love for me. She always seems to pose with her head tilted forward, leading with her eyes. That, plus the lack of lips, really draws you to her. It’s an interesting signature…one she’s employed for a while that really stamped her in my memory quickly. Smart tactic if it is in fact an actual tactic.

    • Janet B

I wish she had a shoe with more weight than putty, for starters.

eta: On second thought; better styling from head to toe is what she really needs.

    • kim bunchalastnames

i had those shoes the model’s wearing back in the ’70s.

      • alyce1213

We all did. (All of us who were around then.)

        • kim bunchalastnames

ya, but i don’t know everyone else, so i’m only comfortable in speaking for me. ;D

          • alyce1213

I didn’t mean it snarky, just funny. I remember the 70s and seeing those shoes on everyone (hyperbole acknowledged).

            • kim bunchalastnames

oh, i didn’t take it as snarky. i was just validating you. lol. DAMN THIS INSUFFICIENT MEANS OF EXPRESSING ONESELF CLEARLY. *adds emoticon intended to indicate friendly amusement*

      • ailujailuj

        I adore you.

        • kim bunchalastnames

          *mwah*

    • @Biting Panda

Love the dress, etc. Loathe the swimmer’s hair.

    • marlie

Cute dress. Love the belt, but the shoulders are just a little bit too high. And the shoes were a boring choice. I HATE her new ombre hair. It looks like a bad at-home dye job. And yes, monochromatic face.

    • Trickytrisha

Dress, belt, shoes all okay. Head needs to go back home and start over.

    • LaSylphide

Love the outfit, but the belt is too bulky for such a wispy dress. Wasn’t she a brunette?

    • littlemac8

She’s another pretty brunette who has ruined her look with that god-awful orange hair. Hate! Love the dress and the belt!

    • French_Swede

Hate that multi-colored hair look. She’s much better as a brunette. I do, however, love the dress.

    • GeoDiva

Her hair looks like she spent the summer lifeguarding at the local Y.

    • nannypoo

I love shoulder pads. I have always felt they make the rest of me look smaller. If I’m wrong please don’t tell me. Anyway, I love this. Her hair, as noted, looks awful and the shoes represent a missed opportunity, but the dress is adorable and it looks great on her.

    • YoungSally

Lord — I had that EXACT print and fabric as a Laura Ashley dress circa 1988.

      • Tracy_Flick

I was just thinking the exact same thing. The small-scale floral with that silhouette is reading very dated to me.

        • YoungSally

Everything old “rayon” is new again!

    • Maryanne525

This is not an attack, but a simple observation: holy HELL she is a wee woman!

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Her hair is pretty bad. But not as bad as her lip color.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

The dress is cute, but I am *hating* that hair!

    • pop_top

I would love that for my everyday life, sans the shoulder pads.

    • Doozie58

Coming from a football family could explain the shoulder pads.

    • Kent Roby

A pretty girl in a cute dress, but HORRIBLE hair.

    • demidaemon

Whatever that MUA did to her face is frightening me.

    • Crystal

that blonde is AWFUL. SO BAD.

    • H2olovngrl

She seldom gets the make up right with what she is wearing. Also, I miss the auburn hair. Also, Also, this outfit screams for a darker brown shoe. Like a cool sandal.
