Kat Dennings in David Meister Signature at the People’s Choice Awards

Posted on January 10, 2014

You’ll rarely hear us criticize a floral or print on the red carpet – or to be more accurate, you’ll always find us praising the attempt even if we can’t work up the love for the fabric itself. But we really don’t love this one:

“2 Broke Girls” star Kat Dennings attends the 2014 People’s Choice awards at Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles, California in a David Meister Signature dress styled with Amrapali jewelry.

It’s an okay gown. It suits and fits her very well, even if it’s not the most interesting design in the world. It gets the job done. But that print just looks old to us. We’d have sworn this was a vintage gown.

But in the interest of balance, we would like to offer that we truly love what she’s done with her head. Hair and makeup are really, really pretty and we love the headband. Also: points for rocking a bandage with style.

    Hot topic.

    • Missy

      Ha! My first thought exactly.

    • gabbilevy

I think I had this exact print on my very first cell phone cover, back when we all had those Nokia bricks and they sold the plastic shells on carts at the mall. I thought I was super cool.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

The fabric looks a bit cheap, but I like the shape of the dress – although that ruched panel on the front adds to the “vintage” (i.e 80s) look. Beautiful hair and LIPSTICK! Hurrah!

    • @Biting Panda

I would sell a child (mine, or someone else’s)or those lips. She is high ranking on my Crush List.

      • @Biting Panda

        ^^^^ I’m not a Guest. I practically live here. WTH, Disqus? ^^^

        • ThesisMonkey

It randomly signs me out sometimes too. Disqus is like, “that’s it, you’re cut off.”

      • fursa_saida

I can’t even stand how gorgeous she is. It’s unfair. And it doesn’t help that I adore her Marvel character to a borderline unhealthy level.

      • Dangerfield5

Tell you what, you and I sell half a child each to make the full one up and see if we can get a timeshare. She’s very beautiful.

  • jspark

And uni-boob. She’s got lovely headlights… there should be two.

    • Sobaika

As someone who is similarly endowed, I get the impulse to keep them strapped into place and not move an inch, ever. It’s tough – a different style might’ve made them look saggy or overly large or like they’re going to take someone’s eye out or simply not flattering.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

Yup, same here. It’s more enticing to keep them in place than to worry about other issues.

    • Sartorial_She

When enough of her décolletage is exposed to be able to see that she has 2 breasts, I don’t think it counts as uni-boob. I actually think her rack looks spectacular.

  • butterflysunita

I think she looks beautiful. The dress is great with her coloring. But what’s that on her hand?

    • MK03

      Looks like a splint.

    • Erica_Vuitton

She tweeted something about cutting herself while washing knives. Ouch!

    • MilaXX

She injured her hand. It’s a splint dressed up.

  • Diego!

I disagree. I love the dress and those red roses on black. She looks stunning! (love the tiara) :D She looks like a dark modern princess. FLAWLESS Make Up and Hair! And the Tiara! :D

    • anotherkate

Ha, I just came here to say something to the same effect about the dark princess vibe.

      • Diego!

Haha It seems I’m not the only one. LOL xD

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Arwen’s much more fun younger sister.

    • Coleen

I’m giving her an “Attagirl” for sure; it’s not a WERQ for me because I dislike the neckline split.

    • Constant Reader

I was definitely getting a princess vibe (does anyone else remember the old Snow White & Rose Red Little Golden Book?), but I couldn’t decide if I like it because I’m all for anything princessy, or if it is legitimately a great look. Now I’m thinking it’s both. :)

      • conniemd

I loved Snow White and Rose Red. She definitely could be Rose Red.

    • lunchcoma

I like it too! I don’t think it’s quite enough for a WERQ, but I like the pattern and don’t see much to criticize here.

    • kmk05

Definitely agree! She’s not tended to have the best fit, but this is really working for her.

      • Diego!

        Word.

  • decormaven

Something in the fit bugs; maybe riding low on the bodice or short in the waistline. Do love her hair’do though, and snaps for dressing up the wrist wrap.

  • MW

I think she looks gorgeous though it looks like she must be struggling to breathe. Hair and make up give me life!

  • @Biting Panda

I respectfully disagree about the fit. It could use a bit more hoisting up top, and the little V should be in between her boobs, not over one of them. Sister has a helluva rack, and it’s awfully close to making an appearance.

Overall though, I love this. I would have put her hair up a bit more, but still had it soft and romantic, like it is here.

    • Paigealicious

      Yep, definitely titscrepancy on this.

    • demidaemon

Usually, you can tell she has more spillage than this, so she is a bit more tamed than usual.

  • http://thejoyfulfox.blogspot.com/ Laura

The print is utterly forgettable, but those colors look gorgeous on her.

  • anotherkate

I think she looks really pretty! Agreed that the print itself isn’t the greatest thing in the world, but I can’t hate on this. Her hair makes her look like a princess, but like a really cool and edgy one? I don’t know, I dig it. And the dress is doing marvelous things for her already-marvelous bewbs.

  • nannypoo

I love it. I think she looks beautiful.

  • barbarienne

I feel like the design of the bodice is completely wrong for this fabric. Large print on fussy rutching and divided up space just doesn’t work. If the skirt had the pattern and the bodice was solid black or solid red, maybe?

  • Missy

Yeah… I don’t know HOW old, but it at least gives me flashbacks to my Hot Topic loving days in the 90s. Oh baby-fake-goth, how I miss that phase.

  • Kbear

Maybe I watch too much CSI, but the print looks like bloody footprints on a black floor. The fit is OK. If it was another print, it would look really good. Fitting a bustline like hers is a delicate proposition without any straps for support.

  • jilly_d

She looks extremely pretty. I don’t hate the fabric, and I don’t remember seeing her in a lot of ball gowns. More of this please, Kat. Good effort.

  • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

We’re what.. 10, 11 days in Australia, into 2014.. and I have to declare this lipstick deployment the best of 2014. I can’t see this getting beat anytime soon.. :)

  • Dan_In_NYC

She looks like an extra from Man of La Mancha. That might not be a bad thing. I’m not sure.

  • ojosazules

The people’s princess. I kinda like the slasher looking black lines in the roses.

  • Erica_Vuitton

That lip colour is giving me LIFE!! I love the hair, make up and the dress! She was a host so it’s good this was only the RC dress… those (fab) girls look like they are about to make a daring escape!

    • gigi kennedy

YES!! lip color is so pretty on her!

  • PeggyOC

That is how you put boobs in a strapless dress. It’s beautifully fitted. Cleavage, but not baby heads.

    • cocohall

I agree – she often seems to have poorly fitted clothing (I can’t be easy to fit her as she is tiny other than her bust) and this dress does a wonderful job of accenting her figure but not letting the boobs tell the whole story. I thought it was a personal best for her.

  • amaranth16

Oh, I think the whole thing is gorgeous, and what a badass for what she’s done with that brace.

    • Targettaste

At first I thought it was jewelry-that-looked-like-a-brace. Now that I know it is a brace that she dressed up, it is adorable.

  • MilaXX

She really looked great i most of her costume changes. She later wore a black jumpsuit that was gorgeous. This I think I would like better if the skirt was solid black.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Good for her for blinging out the bandage, and for providing some support and coverage to those bodacious ta-tas!

  • gigi kennedy

oh the lipcolor is so pretty on her too. love the headband

  • omg_dora

I think the dress is a bit too small for her up top and the print is a bit 1980s, but she looks very very pretty.

When my mother hurt her arm and had to wear an arm sling, she got my grandma to sew one for her in sparkly black fabric. It looked fab. I adore anyone who does that.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

I am not 100% sure, but I think Kat and I get our waffles at the same place.

  • boweryboy

I actually like the gown. It definitely has a vintage vibe so I think it calls for vintage inspired styling. Shorten the skirt a skosh, add some opera length gloves, and top it off with Alexandre inspired hair and it could be a win.

Overall, I think she’s the problem. It’s not her dress. I want to grab the bodice and yank it up a few inches.

  • marlie

Kat looks really pretty. The shape and fit of the dress are really flattering, and I don’t love – but don’t – mind the print. Her hair and makeup are great, and the headband was a cute(sy?) touch. And way to rock the bandage.

  • SouthernGirlRena

The dress is fine the the head truly is flawless. LOVE that lip color.

  • Charles

Great shape, and her makeup/hair is way better than usual (she can wear a lot of makeup, but she tends to wear A LOT of makeup), but that fabric is the wallpaper in a boutique hotel 15 years ago.

  • MannahattaMamma

    She’s wearing my grandmother’s couch.

  • Kerry McCombs

I think the entire thing is GORGEOUS!

  • Sunraya

I actually love the gown, and hate the hair and make-up. Way too much Renaissance Fair for me!! And I know – many of my friends regularly attend them!!!!

    • kimmeister

The headband doesn’t seem to be in her wheelhouse.

  • Aidan B

I refuse to apologize for liking this. She honestly looks great.

  • Frank_821

The print is inoffensive but it’s kind of on the safe side. Almost too safe. It doesn’t really suit her. Like why bother with a print? I like the rouching on the bodice. A different fabric would have made a huge difference in terms of impact

  • filmcricket

I love this. I can see all the arguments against that the Uncles and some BKs are making, but I think it and she are so beautiful that I don’t even care. The word that always comes to mind when I see her is “luscious” and this is no exception.

  • Clydette Wantland

    I like it!

  • random_poster

I love this. She looks very feminine and beautiful.

  • melanie0866

    BREASTS. That is all.

  • Tatiana Luján

I love this dress on her and the bold print seems to suit her personality.

  • jw_ny

    very pretty…I like it all.

  • sagecreek

Oh, it’s a bandage. That’s okay then. I thought this was some kind of weird Michael Jackson throwback.

  • In_Stitches

She has a very romantic look to her that the dress suits. She’s like a modern version of a classic painting. It’s all working for me.

  • Trickytrisha

That dress? Totally lovely. The shape is great, the print is very effective with her coloring. Hair and makeup super. This is some creamy skin she’s rocking.

  • KT

Totally disagree — I think she looks gorgeous. The silhouette is the right idea for her figure (except the waist is maybe a tad too high), I’m loving the dramatic red and black combo, and yes, her head looks very pretty. This may be a personal best.

  • oatmealpie

That slit just screams “Here are my boobs!”

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I rather like this look, although the dress needs hemming.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I wonder if a different pattern would have given this a more modern look? Those are certainly her colors, and the bandage thing was handled really well.

  • Ashley Ellen Wilson

Oh i love her gothic princess look. This is so feminine and yet suits her very well. I actually really dig that print–but I also like vintage prints a lot, so I don’t know that that says a lot ;)

  • formerlyAnon

I like, but I don’t care for the top of the bodice. It bugs that the “v” is not centered between her breasts. I also think I’d like the bodice to come up an inch? Half inch? A very small but critical amount, anyway, to dispel the illusion that it might slide down too far with any sudden movement.

  • Imasewsure

I love this girl (never seen her act of course though). Dress is ok but the bodice seems really short… kind of like the retro print

  • crash1212

I love the bedazzled finger brace! Kudos for that. She looks pretty…it’s not earth shattering.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I love this on her. LOVE. The fabric could absolutely be better, but the shape and fit are superb.

  • Nancer

I love this, and I even love the fabric! She looks wonderful.

  • elemspbee

    aw, prom 1984.

  • LeelaST

    Beautiful fabric.

  • Janet B

    Color On Her Lips!! Brava!

Beautiful from the neck up. Too bad the dress doesn’t fit well.
The print looks cheap although the fabric itself doesn’t look inexpensive.

  • quiltrx

I think I like this because it *does* look vintage. And it suits her coloring very nicely.
