Juliette Lewis in Zac Posen at the 2014 Critics’ Choice Awards

Posted on January 17, 2014

Love it:

Juliette Lewis attends the 2014 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California in a Zac Posen dress paired with a Brian Atwood clutch and Coomi jewelry.

We know we bitched about red-carpet-colored gowns on the red carpet, but some ladies pull off a red so well that we can’t hate. This looks fantastic on her. We’re not crazy about the foofaraw at her hips, but Zac Posen is the King of Foofaraw and this is downright minimalist for him, so we won’t bitch. Necklaces are currently not much in style with the red carpet crowd, but we find ourselves thinking this looks incomplete without one. Love the earrings and the ring, though. Not at all crazy about the clutch. Miss Juliette does have her wild child side, but an animal print paired with a red dress always starts skirting over into Tacky Land.

But it has to be said: That lipstick looks like she slept in it.

At least with all of Posen’s foofaraw (love!) the look is less in need of bling. I’d give her pass this time, because so pretty!

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Now *that’s* how you rock out with your sternum out. Deducting points for the clutch and hair, though.

    • Mismarker

Her people need to talk to Naomie Harris’s people.

    • DTLAFamilies

I think it works because thin as she is, her sternum isn’t bony and actually pleasing to the eye.

      • Vickiefantastico

Yes, she has a lovely sternum!

      • funwithpurses

Too much sternum. That deep a decolletage should look sexy on a body like hers, but it doesn’t. Maybe it’s just her stiff posture.

  • DKBB

Wow…that’s almost a personal best for Ms. Lewis…very nice! But you are so right about the lipstick…

  • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

    Girl be rockin’. Stunning.

  • barbarienne

I kind of like what the foofaraw is doing around back. A pretty clever way to accentuate the rear without being all “look at my ass!”

Can a dress be both “do me” and “be me” at the same time?

    • Ginger

Yes…and this one fits the bill.

  • Spicytomato1

Until today I didn’t realize she was a dead ringer for Rachel Griffiths. I think she’s hitting it out of the park with this look.

  • Kathy

She’s making this whole look sing. I don’t even care about the imperfections. They’re just part of Juliette’s charm.

  • Ginger

    STUNNING color! GAH.

As for the lipstick, Juliette suffers from the same malady as Courtney Love – they both always look like their lipstick was applied before several rounds of martinis.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

If this is the case, I would love to be the make up artist for Juliette Lewis.

      • Ginger

Can you imagine how much fun that would be?

  • @Biting Panda

    Luv huh!!
Wanna know her. Wanna be her friend. Wanna loan her a great, delicate, long necklace that hits in just the right spot.

    • demidaemon

Have all the necklaces in Hollywood been kidnapped? I’m not sure how much longer I can deal with this. I’m going to need a fainting couch, stat, if this keeps up.

      • conniemd

Me too. I’ve been bitching about this for months.

        • Jacob Bowen

Me three, if I was a Hollywood starlet jewelry would NEVER be out of style! Gotta have my diamonds!!!!

  • Anna

Now THIS is how you wear a long dress. Love this.

  • kittentoes

Nonetheless, this is one of her best looks.

  • MilaXX

I like it. Sometimes a bare neckline is better than a necklace. I love the leopard print bag. I’d give her some primer to repair the lipstick but otherwise I have no complaints about this look.

    • jtabz

I’m with you on the bare neckline and bag — the neckline is so dramatic as is, and I think the ladies-who-lunch shape of the clutch makes it playfully cheeky, not tacky.

    • VicD

Yep. I love a leopard bag with a red dress…. MROWWWWWRRRRRRR

  • MoHub

Combs and brushes are your friends, dear.

  • Glam Dixie

The makeup, the clutch and the slightly too much sternum showing neckline take it down a bit but if you just look at her quickly and then look away, she looks pretty lovely.

    • DTLAFamilies

I upvoted that for the edit

      • Glam Dixie

Sometimes things don’t read quite the way they sounded in my head, you know.

  • Ashleigh

She’s amazing and she looks amazing. I love how you guys pick on Zac

  • Lilah

Agreed! This downright simple for Zac. This looks fantastic on her. And I love that she has a few lines on her face. I know stars need to be cognizant of how they look. But the fact that she didn’t botox her face into submission actually makes her look more youthful in my eyes.

    • marlie

And really, she doesn’t look like she’s aged that much. Sometimes too-agressive plastic surgery actually ages someone MORE because they look like they’re trying too hard to look young. Does that make sense?

  • marlie

I love this dress on her. I don’t mind all of the hip details. The clutch is a small enough nod to her wild side that I don’t mind it, but her people dropped the ball on her makeup.

  • jay

You know, I try to be cranky about this because I love her tendency to dress like a gymnast on a meth bender, but goddamn. I can’t hate, because she looks INCREDIBLE.

  • Mismarker

Her whole face looks like last night’s makeup. Other than that, perfection. Also, dat ass.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

    Power animal.

    • @Biting Panda

      excellent choice

    • Jacob Bowen

      Fa-her sure!

  • Surely

No to the lipstick, but besides that, one of her personal bests. Go, girl!

  • marcia miller

Love the color on her, and it’s a pretty dress. The hip foofaraw is jarring, giving her body a weird shape. Otherwise she looks good!

  • NMMagpie

Never a fan of plunging necklines (midlines?) but this looks just right.

  • Jessica Freeman

Necklaces are obviously not on trend, because I find myself sounding like a broken record “this really needs a necklace”

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I love the foofaraw (which personally I like to spell phoofaraw – I think the ph adds phoofiness) – I think it is a really elegant update on the bustle.

    • jtabz

The world would be a better place if more people philosophically mused upon spelling.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I also spell the aubergine dip “babaganouj” because I think the j makes a longer more luxurious sound. I have oddly strong opinions on these things!

    • conniemd

If you were a Philly sports phan you’d be replacing all the “f’s” in the world with “ph” as in Phillie Phanatic.

      • marlie

I usually hate doing that, but it’s ok when it’s the Phillies. ;)

  • Sarah

Her butt looks amazing in that dress. So does her solar plexus.

    • alyce1213

She has a great butt to begin with, and the pleating on that skirt is genius.

  • JauntyJohn

I’m split-decision on a necklace with this. The clean plunge of that deep V is really stunning on her. It’s like in the close-up I want one but from farther out it’s all Fabulous Drama without it. Overall though (aside from the lip) truly striking.

  • jw_ny

I’d like to see this from behind because it looks like the foofaraw is also a butt sling…and her butt looks kinda perky from the side. ;) I kind of like it from the front, although just a bit to much plunge for my taste. Anyway…Juliette looks really great here..and the color is perfect on her.

  • Cheryl

Don’t like the American Hustle neckline, but the colour is lovely. I like the foofaraw, the way it goes from the hips to embrace the buttocks is attractive. The clutch is fine by me, but you are so right about the lipstick. Just reapply it, if you are going to consume a beverage.

  • demidaemon

I can’t with the hip pleats. Zac Posen is quickly skirting over into Marchesa land for me. However, Love it from the waist up.

    • Shawn EH

They’ve been sitting too near each other on ProjRun, haven’t they?

      • demidaemon

They were in the last PRAS finale, I believe.

  • decormaven

Work it like it’s HOT! She is selling it for sure.

  • Diego!

Gorgeous! She looks amazing! I love Juliette and her last RC appearances have been superb!

  • conniemd

When Posen minimalizes all the extra fofaraw, he does know how to design dresses that fit a woman’s body. Someone needs to impose the remove one design element rule on him.

  • webslice33

she is looking more amazing these days..good for her!

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

The lips…it must be stain…I wonder why when doing a heavy duty thing like an awards show they don’t stick with some tried and true battle star like a Shiseido or Guerlain lip color? Particularly in reds. Makeup artists know how to deal with ‘creep’; hell, I know how. Lovely look.

  • ailujailuj

WOW… I was impressed twice – love her in red, her hair, makeup, gown are all quite lovely and wonderfully coordinated – love the leopard print on the clutch and don’t hate it with the outfit…
But was impressed again because as I was reading TLo’s comments…and at the same time listening to Steven Colbert talk about the unbelievable Kalfin diamond-studded pacifier (wthf)… LITERALLY as I was reading TLo’s line “…not crazy about the foofaraw at the hips” as Colbert launches into another commentary with the phrase “foofaraw brewing over income inequality”. And THEN Carol Burnett skypes in… The constellations are aligned.

Anyway, I scrolled back up to take another gander at her hips – and I quite like that period detail. I generally hate all fluffles but this is appropriate to the style, nicely draped and I don’t mind them. I don’t think they were done well – too much pulling (seeing so much of that lately – why are all the important people’s asses fighting with fabrics?).

  • Carla_Charlton

Recently I complained about the current trend for super-low necklines, but this looks good.

  • formerlyAnon

Love it for the color and the beautiful fit. It could have been very meh.

  • Chuck Barthelme

    Damn girl! Wow.

  • Danielle

YES YES YES YES. I luv huh.

  • bellafigura1

Sorry that is cut two inches too low. It distracts from the power of the look.

  • Trickytrisha

Yep, a little too low cut for comfort. She looks great though.

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

I theoretically dislike this dress, but she’s looking good here.

  • crash1212

Well, a Zac Posen dress I don’t loathe. Whodathunkit? She looks great, but those deeeeeep V necklines make me twitch.

  • Tracy_Flick

She has the perfect figure for that neckline, and in fact the whole silhouette. Gorgeous.

  • Sunraya

She looks great!! I don’t usually like such low cut fronts, but it is classy and elegant on her, not tacky at all. Great job!!!

  • Akemi

It looks like her head on another person’s body, and the more I look at it, the more I can see nothing but that.

  • lundibleu

Ooh, she looks good. I do agree though, when the neckline goes down that far a necklace would balance it all out a little better. Also nice to see someone else who is slim but not bony showing that it is possible.

  • procrastinatrice

The dress is nice, but I really dislike the hair. It is too flat on the top part. And agree that the clutch, paired with this dress, takes the outfit to a rather tacky place…

  • alyce1213

She looks amazing in this dress. The neckline is very deep, hello sternum, but she’s not spilling out all over the place, so it’s okay. I’m not a Posen fan, but I love the pleating around the hips and butt, and the way the fabric drapes down.

  • LeelaST

I’ve not “gotten” her. Even though there’s nothing vulgar going on, I’m not a fan of the sternum-baring necklines. Still, she looks the best I’ve seen her in recent memory.

  • hannabanana

Do Me dress. And she’s selling it – she looks great!

  • Lily-Rygh

I swear to God, she looks more and more like Stockard Channing every year! (J’adore Stockard, by the way, so this is NOT an insult.)

  • Monabel

The foofaraw almost redeems that ghastly neckline.

  • quiltrx

This does need a big ol’ necklace, to my eye. She looks fantastic! And I think this particular foofaraw is pretty great–I love how it comes around from the back. You go, girl!

  • elzatelzabelz

Gorge, the stuff on her hips is weird, but the overall effect of the whole look outweighs the floofery.

  • whirligig7

I love the horizontal line in the middle of her forehead… no seriously. I get SO excited any time a celebrity (and one who has been in the spotlight her entire adult life) does NOT mess with her face. Look how she looks so gorgeous and so much like herself and also still young and fresh, yet there are wrinkles. What a thing.

  • Rachel Lee

I can’t put my finger on why, but I keep thinking she looks as if she’d got the dress on backwards.

  • prisma

Gwyneth Paltrow made me despise sternum-baring dresses but Juliette totally pulls this one off. I wish I could look that amazing in that dress. Rock on, Juliette!

  • Jacob Bowen

Mr. Posen CLEARLY followed the Santino Rice rule on this dress. I was waiting for a RIDICULOUSLY HUGE mermaid skirt to ruin this for me, so clearly someone has been telling him to remove elements. And this really wouldn’t be a Juliette Lewis look without the leopard print, she’s gotta have her kooky personality somewhere.

  • PeaceBang

    Three words: Fab-u-lous.

  • Suse

Her right breast looks sort of lumpy in a couple of shots. I don’t really like plunging necklines on anyone. Her strong features look great in that dress color, though.

  • sunflower

Gorgeous dress! The best Zac Posen has done in eons. I don’t mind the bag because it’s very her, and a little self expression is good. She could use some lip liner though

  • Corsetmaker

I love the pleats on the hips. If there were no detail, no fooferwhatsit then designers would have to retire, bored, while plain frocks in different hues just rolled off production lines. Agree it needs a necklace though.

  • E. D.

I like it a lot, even the pleating. Totally right about the lipstick though.

  • allcapsERINN

She looks gorgeous. These pics make me happy.

  • Crystal

She looks hot, but I wanted to slap her during the entirety of August: Osage.

  • Gatto Nero

The color is fabulous on her, but all the overworked pleating defeats this look. A simple bias cut might have been more elegant.
    And the clutch is bad..

  • MandyM

This is a WERQ! Seriously the best she’s ever looked!

  • Miranda

I love a blood red dress.

  • bertkeeter

Dress looks messy… n she needs a good shampoo!

  • Jecca2244

she does look a LOT better since Ilaria Urbinati has been styling her
