Julia Roberts in Gucci at the Palm Springs International Film Festival

Posted on January 06, 2014

Someone needs to shoo her away from this silhouette.

Julia Roberts attends the 2014 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala in a Gucci dress with bell sleeves paired with a Roger Vivier ‘Boite de Nuit’ clutch, Gucci pumps, and a Wilfredo Rosado ring.

Because “shapeless dress with bell sleeves” is clearly not working for her, no matter how much that dress is tarted up in sequins and animal print. It’s all very koo-koo-ka-choo, Mrs. Robinson. Makes her look older than her age. There’s been some chatter about whether or not she’s pregnant, but that happens every single time a female celebrity under 50 has a new or hot project out (which is kind of sad, when you think about it). Pregs or not, there’s no reason for her to be wearing such a shapeless, unflattering frock. Whatever that crap is on the sleeves and hem is the worst part of all. It looks like craft store trim.

Julia, Sandy’s beating your ass left and right. Time for you to step this (probably entirely fictional) rivalry up. We want to see you wipe the floor with her (style-wise, that is) the next time you’re out. Bitchy fashion bloggers need their stories and “Sandy kicks Julia’s ass again” is getting dull. Let’s see you really BRING IT, girl. We promise not to use the term “catfight” if you do.

  • This is a great dress! Just not for her.

    • I was arriving in the comments section to say the exact same thing. I really love this dress. Even with the wickety wack craft store trim.. 🙂

I would love this dress for a lot of people, but on Julia I suspect it needs some tailoring to even begin to get close to working for her..

      • 3boysful

I really like that gold scallop trim, too.

    • decormaven

Looks like one of Totie Fields’ frocks.

      • judybrowni

Yes! I was thinking “”A dress that makes Julia Roberts look chunky!” umm, no for Julia.

But skimming the body of those of us not blessed with Julia’s frame…

  • Donyelle

    Bubbe bat mitzvah glamour

  • Diego!

I like it but I’m gonna be realistic… she is too old for that dress. Leave it for niece Emma!

    • I don’t think Emma has the chutzpah. Emma Watson, however…

      • boldprint

Ooh, E-Watz would look completely adorable in this!

        • Or Carey Mulligan.

          • boldprint

          • Vtg Fashion Library

            Or Kiernan………..

  • Danielle

Bell sleeves need to GO. Right to hell with dolman sleeves.

    • Sobaika

My chubby arms likes those sleeves! But I don’t think that’s why Julia wears them…

  • RussellH88

The hair style turns her into a crazed-leopard disco cyclops.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

      Marry me.

  • This dress sends her body on vacation.

    • Little_Olive

Is that an argument for or against the dress 😉 ?

  • jtabz

I love a fresh face and all, but it seems a little incongruous with all the “koo-koo-ka-choo,” doesn’t it?

  • PastryGoddess

When Sandy is beating your ass in a neon pink and orange Jr. prom dress and crappy heels, you know there is a problem

    • KateShouldBeWorking

I would be OK with Sandy beating my ass in just about any outfit. I could use a new cocktail party story.

  • Jecca2244

i’ve gone from adoring her to irrationally disliking her. she just seems so self important.

  • Candigirl1968

I think Julia confuses comfortable with bell shaped and tries to let her long legs do the work (twenty years ago, she relied on her hair and dressed just as “eh”). If she’s going to do the Oscar pole dance, Julia really needs someone who can help her bring it.

  • @Biting Panda

    Koo-koo-ka-snooze, Mrs. Roberts.

  • nannypoo

She is a celebrity who I find annoying no matter what she does. Here she looks a little disturbed.

    • Deborah McLaughlin

YEah. What’s with the crazy eye? She looks that way in most of her photos.

  • filmcricket

I … actually kind of love this whole thing?

    • GillianHolroyd

Me too. What’s wrong with us??

      • filmcricket

I don’t know. I love the hair, I love the shape. I wouldn’t choose that fabric in a million years, but it’s better than the horrid stuff crawling all over Sandy. Her legs look fab, as usual. And I am not a Julia apologist by any means, so it’s not out of affection for the wearer. Oh well. We can sit in a corner here by our lonesome.

        • altalinda

I’m joining you. Hot chocolate as the cold snap moves in?

        • Mary229

I don’t like the dress per se but I do agree with you that this look seems to work for her and she seems comfortable in it. Also, her hair and face look fabulous and she still has that killer smile and those great legs. I really don’t care for Julia Roberts at all. But she looks good to me.

    • formerlyAnon

I like it a LOT, but not for her, here. It doesn’t seem to me to serve the purpose of showing her to best effect on the red carpet. Though it’s nice that she kind of looks like she’s finding it fun.

      • marlie

You do have a point. She doesn’t look as painfully uncomfortable as she usually does on the red carper.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I, on the other hand, never get tired of hearing “________ kicks Julia’s ass”.

  • DominoEstella

I’ve seen her in a bikini via paparazzi shots and her bod is still pretty bangin’. I see no reason why she shouldn’t work those gams. I am thinking she’s going for comfort here and wanted to forgo the use of Spanx. I can’t say I blame her but it’s not like she steps out often enough to be put out all the time.

  • boweryboy

I think the dress is all kinds of fab, but just not on her. I would imagine this looking fantastic on a 20 (or maybe 30) -something starlet.

  • queen b*tch

I’m team Sandy all the way, I can’t take Julia’s smug resting face. I want to do shots with Sandy! But between 4 year old’s birthday party colours on Sandy and old lady leopard print and sequins on Julia, neither are hitting it on the style front.

  • crash1212

Her head looks great. I love the textile and the neckline. I wouldn’t hate it as much as I do, if the tin foil was removed from the sleeves and hem.

  • Little_Olive

The dress is paradoxically too young and too matronly at the same time. Also, not hers.

  • Kent Roby

Apparently Sandy gave Julia a black eye along with the ass-kicking, which explains the hair. Sweetie, send me that dress; I’ll make several cute throw pillows out of it.

  • gigi kennedy

oh how disappointing! i had just spotted her head & the neckline and imagined the dress had a gorgeous simple form fittling cut w/ classy pencil skirt. then i opened up the post and blah…bell shaped? ewww… if only i had my fashion plates set from when i was 10 to draw out the image in my head of a fabulous dress

    • Sarah

Fashion Plates: Oh how I miss you! And I had the same imagination, it would seem. Totally thought the neckline was working for her, and then it just bells out everywhere you want it to nip in. Ergh.

      • gigi kennedy

i know. gah! the bell shocked me b/c in my head it was all fabulousity. so typical monday morning

  • Sarah

Man, if you cut the trim off the sleeves & hem and made that dress a tight sheath, she’d look good. Maybe a little too fancy 50’s beatnik, but I still think it would be better than That Girl (plus sequins).

  • mjude

I am feeling Valley of The Dolls realness.

  • oklund

I know it’s leopard print, but with those clumpy heels and that awkward posture, she really reminds me of a baby giraffe.

  • teensmom99

I kinda like it–but it does remind me of a dress I got at Chicos . . . so I guess that sums it up (and I have a lot to hide in my mid-section that Julia doesn’t).

  • lalahartma

  • Carolyne

    She’s her own grandmother….

  • ballerinawithagun

Very matronly on her. This dress should only be worn by the flat chested. If she was going for the sixties vibe of Palm Springs, she should have gone all the way with the make up, some winged eye liner maybe even Twiggies underneath and a more controlled hairstyle. Those orthopedic heels are horrible with this dress. As long as she was be-dazzling do it to your shoes also.

    • formerlyAnon

Definitely agree about the make up.

Cute and comfy looking dress. Screw’em all says Jules.

  • KinoEye

Ugh. Not great, Julia. And I’m sure this has been said before, but she always looks so surprised to be wherever she is. Her eyes say, “Who am I? What am I doing here? Why are they taking pictures of me, whoever I am?” every time I see her.

  • MilaXX

Yeah that’s a fugly dress and it ages her horribly.

  • Eve Farren Farber

Also, she has only one eye.

It’s funny I would like the dress more if it was on a younger starlet…weird

  • queeniethebold

Someone needs to just shoo her away. As with another poster, i find myself completely disliking her sort of automagically every time i see her. She gives off such an obnoxious vibe. She has great legs, though, doesn’t she? But what’s with the popping eyes? Her eyes look all weirdly, as if she’s constantly surprised or scared. i’m not Eye Shaming here; it’s just that it’s so noticeable.

The dress is awful on her.

  • sagecreek

Hate the animal print more than I hate the shape.

    • kimmeister

I hate the festering sequins more than I hate the shape or print.

      • sagecreek

        Bonus points for “festering”.

  • SugarSnap108

I have learned that one crazy eye is scarier than two.

I’d really like this dress without the bell sleeves. The shiny, foily business would work for me if it was confined to the hemline.

  • Lilah

    “ARRR I’m Julia Roberts, a one-eyed pirate.”

    • Kathy

      lol, The Dread Pirate Roberts.

  • Lorelei_D

Disagree! She looks great in an updated Madmen way!

  • marlie

Wow… that’s kind of matronly, despite (because of?) the print and the sequins. But Julia’s face and hair look pretty. Simple and no-nonsense, but pretty.

  • Anna_Cecilia

Julia: make nice with at least one gay who can show you that in between Maitre D’ and crazy aunt of the bar mitzvah boy, there are actually a myriad of lovely options for women in your age group. Please.

  • Nika E

I think this would look good on Helen Mirren. She’s got the boobs to give it some shape and she got great legs.

  • Rhonda Shore

i love that hairdo on her though. I don’t think she looks bad!

  • Katie Wolf

That face! Jebus, she is so freaking beautiful I think that if I saw her in person, I would quite actually faint.

    • formerlyAnon

I did see her in person nearly 20 years ago, in bright noon daylight, in a diner in Texas, apparently dressed down and having a casual meal (with then-husband Lyle Lovett). For the first time I knew what people mean when they talk about how some celebrities whose features aren’t all that stunning are absolutely, radiantly gorgeous in person. Her skin was glowing, really luminous, and I don’t know how much was high dollar skin care and subtle makeup and how much was something genetic, but I was stunned.

  • Julie Parr

Anne Bancroft was 36 in The Graduate. Julia Roberts is currently 46. I think she looks amazing for her age and otherwise.

    • alyce1213

I think “koo-koo-ka-choo, Mrs. Robinson” was meant figuratively, not as an actual comparison to the incomparable Anne Bancroft, who is incomparable. Especially with Julia Roberts.

      • Julie Parr

I get it. But, isn’t it *amazing* that Mrs. Robinson was only 36? And, that we think of the quintessential “older woman” as an actress who was only 36 in the role? When I saw The Graduate in my teens or early 20s I thought Mrs. Robinson was supposed to be 50-60!

        • alyce1213

I get that. Amazing how perception of “age” changes as we do.

          • Julie Parr

Yes, I’m old! The same age as Julia Roberts, and I would be so happy to look 1/2 as good as she does!

  • deathandthestrawberry

I just got back from a week visiting the in-laws in Florida or what I like to call the Land of Leopard Print and Spangles. This is pure grandmother-of-the-bride or fancy night at the club. My mother-in-law would give her left tit for this dress.

  • formerlyAnon

I do not think the shape of that ‘do is doing her any favors. I think the hair & make-up ages her more than (as much as?) the dress.

Maybe because they remind me of “trying to be hip but actually a bit overwhelmed middle school teachers with teens of their own” in the late ’60s/early ’70s? (ETA: which actually wouldn’t age her but would track with her actual age, though dolled up celebs aren’t supposed to look that.)

  • ashtangajunkie

    This is heart-warmingly terrible.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I walked smack into the thumbnail again. I thought, “Heeeeey! A little leopard print! I like a little leopard print.” Then I clicked. And there was leopard print and metallic gold lace trim and bell sleeves, and and and… Kittens, I’m from Queens, and even *I* think this is tacky as hell.

    • Evan

If it had some more shape to it, it might be tacky enough for drag! haha

    • demidaemon

If you were from Jersey, I could almost except this statement. 😉

      • NYCGlamourpuss

I’m originally from Jersey! And I promise you, we’re the same level as tacky in Queens, don’t kid yourself!

  • Imasewsure

It’s a perfect frock for Palms Springs… in fact I believe she took it straight out of Phyllis Diller’s closet there!! Phyllis would have rocked it properly… Julia just looks stupid

    • alyce1213

Nailed it — definitely Phyllis Diller.

      • NYCGlamourpuss

YES! Serving up Phyllis Diller realness!

    • Julie Parr

Revision, I think Julia looks good in it AND I agree it’s straight from Phyllis Diller’s closet.

  • altalinda

Ok, I’ll dissent. I think she looks good in this.

    • Julie Parr

      I think she does too.

  • EveEve

Leopard-patterned black lace now? Really? Die lace, die. Bring on the luxe brocades!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m not liking this dress-tulle/net over leopard print with a MIchael’s band of gold sequins? Ms. Roberts, you and your stylist can do better.

  • traceyishere

I like it, maybe it just needs a belt?

  • Mary229

I would choose Sandra Bullock over Julia Roberts every day of the week. In fashion and in everything else. There. I said it.

  • I’d really love to see animal prints die a fiery death, and not just because I’m inching into age/size demographic where it seems to be the only option for ‘sexay.’ Loathe it unconditionally.

  • Warrior89

Though I give her a thoughtful head nod for having smooth and non-brassy hair, she needs to get it off her eye…it’s like an eye patch. Also: hideous dress.

  • mickiemonkey

And someone needs to shoo some of that hair out of her face.

  • throwaneyeonthis

She is a woman of a certain age experiencing major changes in her body. It happens and you usually flounder around trying to first camouflage the pouch tummy and the breasts that are dropping, accentuate the positives, try new silhouettes and hopefully learn to accept these changes. Or get tons of plastic surgery a la Demi Moore. But once you accept and feel like yourself again, you realize your original style is usually the best one for you. Either that or she’s pregnant.

    • makeityourself

You are dead-on correct. I recognize that body, as Miss J and I are built the same and I’m 53. She’s either pregnant and for personal reasons doesn’t was to divulge it just yet, or she’s experiencing –for the first time in her life– weight gain with a metabolism that’s slowing down. At 46, it could be either.

    • She’s a huge movie star on the red carpet in ten thousand dollars worth of borrowed items that do nothing for her.

      • throwaneyeonthis

Don’t disagree. Still in my New Year’s Not-So-Bitter Kitten glow.

  • Sarah Souffriau

She looks like a giraffe in some of these shots. There, I said it.

  • rondele

I’m with the Phyllis Diller group, may she RIP. This isn’t the first time she’s worn this silhouette, I don’t think? I don’t understand why her stylist lets her go out like this. It seems to me she either tries too hard or not enough. Julia, your Pretty Woman days are over. There. I said it!

  • berkeleygirl

Though her style goes in a different direction, I think she’s like her co-star Meryl. At this stage of her career, she really doesn’t give a f*** about fashion, and mostly wants to be comfortable. That’s well and good, but just so sad. In my opinion, she’s never looked better, but has no idea what to wear.

  • Therese Bohn

I think it just needs a belt.

  • pookiesmom

She looks so happy! Unfortunately, the dress is horrible. It’s great to see her so radiant, though.

  • lillyvonschtupp

Someone needs to shoo her away, period.

    • Sunraya

      Comment of the day!!! HAHA!!

  • Sunraya

What is with the bug eyes?? Did she have very bad work done??? She looks shocked, shocked, I tell you!!!

  • bertkeeter

The late BROOKE ASTOR would rock that dress….. she died at 105 years of age…okay!

  • demidaemon

She. Looks. So. Dumpy. A+ on the hair though. At least it isn’t the same old same old.

  • LambeeBaby

She should give this dress to Meryl.

  • alliekat9090

I recently saw some pap photos taken of her and she looked like she had put on considerable weight around her midsection. Hence the tent dress. My God a middle aged movie star with figure problems! The horror!
