Jessica Chastain in Oscar de la Renta at the National Board Of Review Awards Gala

Posted on January 08, 2014

It’s dreary and freezing outside T Lo Corporate Headquarters so we’re feeling the need for a shot of sunshine at the moment.

Jessica Chastain attends the 2014 National Board Of Review Awards Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City in head-to-toe Oscar de la Renta.

Our thoughts, in order:

Wow, she can pull off that yellow with her coloring.

Oh dear. Her stylist wept when she saw the bra strap showing.

Wait. Can she pull off that yellow, with her coloring?

Her face looks pretty.

Not so much on the sloppy hair.

God, that bra strap’s distracting.

The dress is pretty, but it’s a fairly literal 1950s dress, without much updating.

We don’t care if she’s styled just like the runway model, those shoes are ridiculously gorgeous.

Your thoughts, kittens?

She is so hot. Love the color on her, but I don’t like the hem. Shoes are fab.

    • Chuck Barthelme

Also don’t really love the literal interpretation of the 1950s hair. And someone needs to help her learn how to pose. She always looks awkward.

      • SophieCollier

Pssht, just stand Lena Dunham next to her. Jess will look like a pro model.

        • demidaemon

          Indeed.

  • L the Phenom

Agree about the hair. It doesn’t look like it was styled at all – she just walked out of her house that way. And is she not wearing a single piece of jewelry??? Don’t like the silhouette or hem of the dress but love the color on her. Shoes are gorgeous.

  • understateddiva

I think she call pull off a literal 50′s look – it suits her better than some of the edgier styles she’s tried. The shoes do a little towards updating it, a modern piece of jewelry would help too.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Yeah she can pull off that intense yellow.
I’m crying inside over the bra strap. She couldn’t have said, “Hang on a sec guys while I fix this.”?

  • Rhonda Shore

She looks adorable and the bra strap isn’t bothering me.

  • MilaXX

I just looked at this and realized she may be my newest girl crush. She just looks pretty. I don’t mind if she did copy the runway version because she’s somehow managing to infuse her own personality into the look. The bra strap is working my nerves.

  • Karen Belgrad

Is see the bra strap and all I can think of is that one dancer during the “Time of My Life” portion of Dirty Dancing. I’m now imagining Jessica in line formation behind Patrick Swayze.

(I think the color works, but the asymmetrical hem is giving me twitches that are compounded with bra strap twitches)

    • https://twitter.com/#!/marla_melendez eme and azul

much to my chagrin, my brother has always said that that’s me in that movie (the slightly obnoxious, overenthusiastic, awkward, bra strap-showing girl). good times! – favorite movie still…

  • marlie

I covet those shoes in the worst way. And the visible bra strap makes ME cry. That’s SUCH an amateur mistake. I’m not sure about her hair or makeup, but I really like the dress, and I like it on her.

    • Constant Reader

I’ve bought cocktail dresses that have little bits of ribbon with snaps to hold bras straps in place — and trust me, I’m shopping at TJMaxx, not Oscar De La Renta. There is no excuse for a dress with that neckline not to have those, or for them not to have been added in the 15 minutes it would take even an inexperienced seamstress like me.

      • ryenerman

Yes! I have FAR less expensive clothing with the bra strap wrangler devices. There is no excuse at all for a dress that probably costs several of my mortgage payments not to have these. I’m irritated just thinking about it.

      • omg_dora

My thoughts exactly! Even if the concept of the dress (or whatever) involved going braless, that’s not a good reason not to add such a simple detail in such an expensive dress.

My inner Betty Draper is thoroughly displeased by the lack of class.

      • Jackie4g

They are called “lingerie straps” usually a bit of rayon seam tape with half a snap on one end and the other part of the snap sewn to the dress. I bet the dress had them, and she didn’t know what they were. Her stylist ought to have known, but I bet the straps were there and simply not used.

  • Alyssa

Need. Those. Shoes. Now. Please & thank you! :)

  • @Biting Panda

Wow, that yellow is a spot of sunshine.

I’m surprised it’s working so well on her.

I think it’s because she added a little color to her skin. She’s not her usual super pale self, that helps.

    Oooooh, those shoes!!

    (read TLo’s thoughts)

    What bra strap?

    Ohhhhhh, there it is.

Meh, she still looks pretty great.

  • SugarSnap108

Can’t see past the BRA. STRAP. OK, I can…Those shoes are fabulous. And that is how powerful a good shoe can be.

  • Michael_Jones

I think she looks pretty, and I had to go back to see the bra strap, so obviously it didn’t distract me. Maybe, however, it’s because I’m freezing in my office this morning, but I looked at this dress and I said “New York? In January? THIS January??”

    • ampg

I think it’s funny that TLo spent most of December yelling at starlets for wearing spring looks in the winter, but now that we’re all freezing and miserable, a bright yellow dress is totally fine. :)

  • carnush

    Beautiful.

  • altalinda

The fact that those shoes don’t fit her bugs me more than the bra strap I didn’t notice.

  • Julaine Haraden Morley

A dress seemingly designed to look rumpled, and with the messy hair and complete lack of jewelry, she appears to have emerged from a romp in the back seat – sad, because she’s in the minority on whom that color is not a mistake.

  • Laurie Landry

Ditto! You’ve nailed it once again TLO!

  • Jenna Marie

I love this. But the bra strap. Ooooooooooooooh it hurrrrrrrts.

  • Miss_Led

Is the dress fitted right? It looks ill-fitting in the wrong places.
Sloppy dress, sloppy hair, great shoes!

    • Shawn EH

It does seem bunchy, but the wide collar is very flattering on her.

  • CommenterFormerlyKnownAsR

The much-needed color covers a multitude of fashion sins, at least in my book.

  • Jaeda Laurez

The hair really needed to be more polished than what it is. And she’s sorely in need of jewelry, because otherwise, the hem makes the dress look kind of Gordon Gartrelle. But those shoes are DOPE.

    • filmcricket

A thousand likes for the Gordon Gartrelle reference.

    • Introspective

yaaaaas for bringing up gordon gartrelle.

and snaps to jessica for rocking those fierce as shit shoes and bucking against the redheads cant wear yellow thing. she looks good here.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com/ The Gifted Collector

When I was a redhead, I often wore yellow. No one ever told me I couldn’t.

  • Judy_S

Love the shoes, like the dress. Don’t like the eye makeup.

  • ashtangajunkie

I LOVE IT. I love the yellow on her. The bra strap is distracting as hell, but her face is radiant and those shoes are delicious.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I have a couple of dresses in a similar weight fabric with that kind of wide neckline and I have to sew bra-strap-keepers into all of them. It’s a necessary pain in the arse. I would have hoped that Jessica’s people could have whipped out a needle and thread and got hers sorted.

    • kimmeister

It’s so wide set, it’s a wonder she didn’t just go for strapless.

    • Constant Reader

I mentioned the same thing up above before I saw your comment. Even a newbie seamstress like me could fix that problem in no time flat. I’d think the folks at Oscar De la Renta would put the bra-strap-keepers (you just taught me that term; thanks) in for her, but failing that, that someone on her team keeps a needle and thread around for moments like this.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I’m sure there is a better term, I just don’t know what it is!

… just looked on ebay – they sell as “shoulder strap retainers”.

        • Jackie4g

Lingerie straps. I grew up with that term and I am old old old.

          • Constant Reader

            Lingerie straps FTW!

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Is she allergic to jewelry? Not a single little embellishment anywhere that I can see.

  • Anna_Cecilia

Halfway there, that colour is an absolute knockout on her and the shoes make me swoon. But the bra strap is really unforgivable and she deserves better hair.

Now I’m in the mood for lemon sorbet.

  • cocohall

I love the genuineness of her smile. She looks radiant. The shoes are everything. As for the bra strap, I find it endearing. Sometimes you really don’t notice that a strap has slipped. It is not as if she has a whole breast exposed (Tara Reid managed that wardrobe malfunction once on the RC and stood there continuing to pose, revealing not just her boob, but her very bad boob surgery as well) – it is just a strap.

  • TrishR

    Those shoes!!!!!

  • bellafigura1

I can not believe Jessica Chastain, on a red carpet, scootches down her bra strap on a dress with that neckline, rather than having the perfect strapless in the master plan. I mean, that’s what *I* do!! It’s kind of endearing. And yes, the shoes, wow.

    • Constant Reader

      Celebrities: they’re just like us!

  • crash1212

My thoughts? Mostly your thoughts, except I absolutely conclude that she CAN pull off yellow with her coloring and I like the messy hair. The shoes make it perfection, the bra strap makes it art.

  • Danielle

    Channeling Celia Foote today, eh?

  • Lisa Dugan

I love love love those shoes. She looks lemony lovely.

  • quiltrx

I like the dress and shoes a lot. I cannot, under any circumstances, wear a yellow like that (turns me total corpse)–but I think it’s working on her.
The hair is half-assed…and omigod can she not FEEL that bra strap????

  • boweryboy

I would like this more if she wore it in April.
As it stands, it’s seasonally inappropriate considering the majority of the nation is undergoing an artic freeze of epic proportions. I can’t get past that.

  • mjude

    love the shoes.

  • MannahattaMamma

I agree with @crash1212:disqus – the bra strap makes it art. And pretty much a person could wear a bag with those shoes and still be red-carpet worthy, I’m thinking

  • elemspbee

she looks awful. she’s not pulling off anything here, except for those shoes. those shoes deserve the runway by itself. she’s just ruining it.

  • Shawn EH

Yes, she can rock canary yellow; yes, the shoes are fabulous; she can turn the world on with her smile!

  • Mrs. Julien

I’m still on those shoes. GORGEOUS!

  • Jessica O’Connell

Seriously though, she doesn’t own a strapless bra? WHY is she wearing a regular bra with this dress? The hair could look better, but I’d still love this if it weren’t for that damn bra strap.

  • Sunraya

I want those shoes!! And I like this dress on here, except for the hem. And the hair needs help. But I want those shoes!!!

  • the_elle_word

I gay grunted when I saw the shoes.

The bra strap makes me want to cry because she otherwise looks like perfection.

  • filmcricket

Aside from not minding the hair and noticing the bra strap first, your thoughts are mine exactly, TLo. That was easy, thanks!

  • Jessica Freeman

I am on board with this minus the extreme napkin drape that is going on on the one side. Her bra strap should have no excuses since I speak for most women that is (one of) the most annoying places a bra strap can slip and one should feel it immediately.

  • Ashleigh

it’s fun to see shoes by someone other than Louboutin and Jimmy Choo

  • decormaven

Those shoes are star-worthy for sure. Love that color on her. We all need a ray of sunshine today!

  • NYCGlamourpuss

I dunno, I just hate that color as a rule, so I’m having a hard time getting on board with any of this. But that’s just my problem – carry on!

  • Imasewsure

I’m not sure that color works on her but it’s a fun dress and the shoes are awesome

  • E. D.

I can’t believe how well that color works for her.

  • AzSportsGirl

I don’t see anything except Smile and SHOES!!!!

  • SewingSiren

Too bad she didn’t go for broke with the earrings. Otherwise all good, excepts the bra.

  • ConnieBV

I keep recalling Janie’s admonition on Dr. Oz about the proper foundation garments being key. Strapless bra, honey. Otherwise I love the entire thing.

  • kcnitch

Hair is way too sloppy, but the color of the dress is great on her. I kinda wish we had the model’s hairstyle and earrings too.

  • jonnyf8

    Remember her? Sort of.

  • Tracey Magyar

    Love the whole thing!

  • msdamselfly

    Darling

  • ballerinawithagun

My dream shoes! After seeing so many photos where she doesn’t look like her beautiful self, it is so good to see her face look this gorgeous!

  • Ann VerWiebe

I would think that something this high end would have strap guides. Guess not. With the shoulders on the sleeves being that dropped, they really should have pinned her in.

  • Lilak

Already tired of the awards season dogs ‘n’ ponies, so thank goodness for Miss Chastain, who’s like the sun coming up no matter what color she’s wearing.
She’s such a welcome sight right now that I won’t give a second thought to the careless hair and slipped strap.

  • EEKstl

Obsessed with the shoes; dress is pretty, as is the color; bra strap = ANNOYING (shouldn’t one of the photogs have shouted “BRA STRAP’S SHOWING” instead of “JESSICA! OVER HERE!” You know, just to be nice…)

  • teensmom99

I need those shoes. I like the dress but it is sort of a costume it’s such a literal interpretation of the 50s. And been there done that with the bra strap.

  • Trickytrisha

Great dress – which might have been more effective at the length on the model – and oh, those shoes! The rest of her is rather too casual for me. No jewelry is evident – a bracelet would have been nice – and the hair is a bit too unpolished. That dress deserves first rate treatment. She’s glowing, though, so kudos.

  • littlemac8

After the last post, aren’t we glad to see a celebrity wearing a bra!! Her bust looks fantastic. Even if the dress is just an excuse to wear those shoes, it is totally worth it. Love her!

  • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

Dress and shoes are gorgeous. Absolutely beautiful. Now please learn how to stand.

  • thunderthighs

Is that matte velvet? I feel like velvet is ripe for a revival.

A navy blue earring would have done wonders here.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

Yes, it’s freezing cold outside here in nyc and Jessica and Allison from yesterday are wearing these sleeveless dresses that seem inappropriate for the season. But they do both look fabulous. This yellow is hard to wear, but Jessica looks great in it.

If your bra is properly fitted the straps won’t fall down like that.

  • Aurumgirl

Yellow on redheads. It never fails. But that hem is spoiling what is actually a gorgeous look on her, especially the shoes.

  • Nancy Karpen

She couldn’t buy a strapless bra? That bra strap is really distracting. I love the shoes, like the dress and even the color looks good on her but some jewelry would help and better hair.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    I’m living for those shoes.

  • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

I love yellow, but it’s not working here. It doesn’t do anything for her but it’s not the color’s fault. It’s the dress style. This dress is wearing her, and that’s not right. (I though I was the only one who went around with her bra strap showing. Ew.)

  • Jacob Bowen

That hair is absolutely bad. It’s not messy enough to be “messy hair”, it just looks like she didn’t fix her hair after pulling a shirt over her head.

  • GeoDiva

That bra strap….. no further words needed.

  • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

Bee-yoo-tee-ful. And I’d maybe suggest a strapless bra next time out, eh.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I love the shoes-LOVE. I’m not wild about the dress-it’s OK. Unfortunate bra strap slip. lovely smile.

  • bertkeeter

    Color …YES!

  • MzzPants

The color is good, the shoes are to die, and the bra strap is a shame. You know every photog in that space saw it and didn’t tell her.

  • Mary Lauer

Shoes are fab, but couldn’t they find ones that fit her?! I am wondering how she managed to walk without losing at least one every step.

  • Samantha Irene

The shoe are fantastic – no reason to say no to them, dress is lovely and bright and it works, hair – meh, makeup – lovely, bra strap – minor tragedy. Lack of some kind of earrings – alas – it would have totally distracted from the bra strap if she had whacked on something sparkly in the ear vicinity.

  • nycfan

Wow, those shoes!! It seems like they ran out of time and/or product with the hair — like they intended to have a 50s style smooth helmet and then were all, oh shit, you’re on, so instead it looks like her hair just got back from the gym.

  • lalahartma

    I think she looks great!

  • demidaemon

I think it is a little long on her. Not sure about the cornflower blue shoes with the yellow.
