Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior at the 2014 SAG Awards

Posted on January 20, 2014

You know how we like to make up stories for the red carpet?

“American Hustle” star Jennifer Lawrence attends the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California in a Christian Dior dress accessorized with Brian Atwood shoes and Jennifer Meyer jewelry.

In this tale, a publicist for Dior, absolutely fed up with the constant complaints about how they’ve been dressing J Law, and utterly mortified that her Golden Globes Dior dress actually turned into a meme, with people dressing their pets in homemade Dior knockoffs made out of sheets and dishtowels, called up the main office, tore some people some brand new assholes and ended her tirade by screaming “JUST PUT HER IN A STRAPLESS SEQUINED SHEATH, YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES!!!!!!!”

Then she promptly got drunk and had sex with a bartender to relieve her nerves. It’s a rough world in fashion.

  • @Biting Panda

    It’s an Awards Season miracle!!

I have no complaints, not a one.

    • StellaZafella

There’s a reason the classics don’t go out of style…this serves her well, she owns it and stands out in it…sometimes less is best.

  • MilaXX

Loved this on her. Hair and makeup look great. WERQ for me.

    • For me too. It may not flatter her bust as much as it might, but it looks like a movie star dress all the way.

    • Emily Smith

I love this too she looks fabulous.

    • A Shiny O’Connor

Yah, j’agree. WERQ it, fashion bambi.

      • formerlyAnon

        “Fashion bambi” is brilliant!

        • A Shiny O’Connor

Thanks. She falters but clearly has no idea what she’s doing and she’s cute, so it’s okay.

    • SuzBald

      Also earrings!

    • DTLAFamilies

Shoes took it out of WERQ territory (too big, too clunky) but otherwise, breathtaking.

  • Adriana

Pretty. A bit of va-va-voom cleavage would have amped it up a bit.

    • Mary229

Sometimes us larger chested ladies like to not have our boobs be the total focus of eye contact. I like it just the way it is!

    • Try and get cleavage in this dress and you get a wardrobe malfunction.

  • Karen Belgrad

She looked so much happier in the meme dress!

  • thecitysleeps

It looks like she has no boobs from the front which obvs isn’t true even if you just look at the picture from the side. It’s riding too low or something, and it’s too long. Otherwise, I love the sequiny colour.

    • fursa_saida

It’s a little too small across the chest, so it’s smooshing them in, basically. I don’t mind that, though. It’s nice sometimes to minimize them.

  • She looks great. No complaints here.

  • Diego!

This is a WERQ from head to toe. She looks stunning!!! I saw her on TV and that dress looked amazing on her. That’s the way JLaw! 😀

  • Anna

Thanks, Dior. Gorgeous girl, sequined dress, was that so hard? Love the earrings!

    • manina

I saw an interview with her family on some local channel (KY) and according to what her mom said Rachel Zoe is her stylist. The mom said (paraphrasing) “Rachel Zoe comes in with her team, the makeup and hair people come in…”.

She always looks great and seems to be having a lot of fun, she is in her element.

      • Anna

        She’s very endearing for sure.

  • Lurk-a-lot

I don’t love it. She looks good, but this dress is too too heavy and constricting for someone so exuberantly youthful and fresh-faced. I want to set her free.

  • Judy_S

I like this lots more now that I know the story behind it!

  • carolynmo

She did not look happy to be wearing the dress. Could she even breathe in it?

    • TeacherH

I agree. The only we reason it looks so good upon first glance is that it is SO much better than the garbage bags, butterfly nets, duct tape monstrosities Dior has been torturing us with for months. The pleasure we feel is relief, people, not an actual fashion moment. She looks decent if somewhat unhappy, but the dress is too tight and nothing about the look is that interesting.

      • jtabz

Dior has gone from torturing us with ugly dresses to torturing her with constricting ones… It’s an inescapably dysfunctional fashion relationship!

      • TeacherH

Just realized how bitchy that post was. I do like the color, and her head looks good. I just think if she had been looking good all along, we wouldn’t think this was as fabulous as we do after looking at crap for weeks and weeks.

    • algaechick

I’m pretty sure as she was being interviewed by Ryan Seacrest, she tugged the dress up and made a remark about it being too small. (I’m sure Dior loved that.) And then her comment about armpit vagina. And, I haven’t seen it yet, but I understand she was quite …interesting… during the post-award interview section. I’m gonna go with TLo’s hypothesis that she got drunk and had sex w/a bartender.

      • AnaRoW

I thought they meant the publicist got drunk not Jennifer.

  • SRQkitten

“Tales from Awards Season”., the follow up to TLo’s first best seller. I would so buy that!

This is the sequined bath sheet version of Jen A’s bath towel dresses. However after seeing JLaw in other Dior mishaps of late, this actually looks decent.

    • MilaXX

I think the difference here is that Jen’s dresses were almost always short. They were literally the same size as a towel, and for a minute they were all she wore.

  • I love this. 🙂 But I am biased, I am a sparkly kinda gal, so anything with sequins is a win as far as I am concerned. If that black tape monstrosity had involved sequins I would have liked it much, much more.

I can’t understand how this works, though. How is it that only certain sequins light up with the blue, red and green? Also does it seem to you there are stripes in this dress as well, red and dark blue?

I hate to say, from what she had to say about it and the look on her face in some of the pics, I don’t feel like she loved it. Which is a shame. 🙁

    • Guest

I think some of the sequins are opalescent or holographic, and that’s
why random ones pick up the light that way. It’s wonderful, and the
subtle rugby stripe underneath gives it something sporty, which I think is the direction JLaw should go.

  • Eva_baby

I loved this at first because it wasn’t her normal voluminous silhouette she’s been wearing. But then I looked at it more and liked it a little less. Honestly I think the dress is getting a lot of play because SHE is wearing it. If it were on any other starlet it would get a nice approving nod we’d move onto the next strapless, sheath.

  • Kent Roby

Classic with just a bit of youthful edge with the jewelry and hair; she looks gorgeous.

  • Laura Renee

Hahaha, I love that story. And she DOES look phenomenal (though I wish the sequins weren’t multicolored).

  • EveEve

Phew! Hopefully, the Year of Dior Disasters is ending for JLaw.

  • Erica_Vuitton

I’d like to think J Law put her foot down and said “STOP DRESSING ME LIKE I’M EMSEMBLY CHALLENGED YOU ASSHOLES!!!”

Love all of this! Hair, make up, the dress, the shoes, everything!!! I think she’s got to calm down a little bit though. You can’t tell everyone to stop using the word fat and then complain you have “vagina armpits”. TRUST girl.. you don’t!

  • LaSylphide

It’s about time they gave her something that isn’t laughable. I still don’t think Dior is a good designer for her (or much of anybody at the moment), but this is terrific.

  • Mary229

I love everything about this. Her hair has never looked better. I love that it’s black at first glance but….wait….it’s not! Those earrings are to die for. And it looks young! This looks like a really expensive version of what a 23 year old might wear to a sorority formal. I love.

  • jilly_d

    • Mary229

They are “get in my jewelry box now” kinds of earrings.

  • brown-eyed girl

Beautiful hair and make-up. Sharing the concern that she is unable to breathe.

  • M. H. Leader

She looks GORGEOUS. Definitely a WERQ!!

  • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

It would have been the best of the night if Lupita wasn’t there.
    A total WERQ.
Up close the texture of the dress is gorgeous.

    • Well I have to say Oprah looked the best I have *ever* seen her. I would probably rank Lupita, Oprah & Anna Gunn higher than this look. 😉

      • MilaXX

Anna Gunn was great for managing to dress in a way that gave a playful nod to her show and still fit the venue.

  • filmcricket

The ironic thing is that she spent the red carpet complaining about it. It does look as though she can barely breathe, but it’s by far the best thing they’ve put her in, maybe ever. She looks gorgeous and the dress is great.

    • Mary229

Did she really? I wasn’t able to watch so I only saw pictures. She looks amazing. I agree—personal best. She didn’t like it? (Maybe it wasn’t comfortable. I could see that.)

      • filmcricket

Supposedly. I didn’t see the RC either, it’s just what I heard reported, but she was complaining about her “armpit vaginas.” Which, to be fair, is not about the dress but about herself. I just got the impression she wasn’t comfortable in it.

        • MilaXX

I saw the remark. It didn’t seem like she was complaining as much as she was joking about it.

        • Mary229

I will say that I did see the footage from the Press room after the Hustle cast won the award and Adams was the only one of the cast not acting like a total asshole. I don’t know what got into the other ones but it was borderline uncomfortable. Lawrence seemed off there and it was odd.

          • pinkxxa

Ohhhh, how were they being assholes? Where can I see this!!!?

          • Mary229

It’s all over the web. Just google it. I have no idea what got into the rest of them but it’s intensely uncomfortable and rude. Adams was literally the only gracious person in the cast. It seemed very OOC for Jlaw. Very odd.

          • pinkxxa

Saw it! I don’t even… I figured you were exagerating but that was AWKWARD. To be fair Amy tried to cooperate too but she seemed flustered and overwhelmed. But aside from JLaw who seemed almost ashamed they were being so cold and Amy who at least tried with some questions they were all ROUGH.

    • jw_ny

Her candor is one thing that I really like about her…she seems very genuine. But, there are times when she could/should curb it…not bite the hand that feeds ya…errr dresses ya in this case.

    • MilaXX

Really I didn’t hear any complaints. I hear the armpit vagina remark, but nothing else.

  • Meg0GayGuys6

Right when I saw this I thought, “someone at Dior finally got the message”

I will agree with @karenbelgrad:disqus , Jen did look much happier in the dirty diaper dress, but this one looks way better (IMHO).

  • GorgeousThings

    Hahahahahahahaha! Snort!
I love the earrings. The stylist gets props for those alone.

  • acevedob

    LMAO, Good story.

  • Jecca2244

she has such a great (and mostly realistic) body shape and I love that they are putting her in something a little more form fitting. also, i hope her Dior contract expires soon.

  • I love this dress. I love her hair, makeup and earrings. But I think it must be too tight because she really doesn’t look very comfy.

  • Kat

Sorry, all I see is a giant Lite Brite screen.

    • Sarah

I see Lite-Brite too, but in a good way. I think it’s good.

    • demidaemon

      What’s wrong with a Lite-Brite?!

  • Jessica Freeman

Oh I really love it, but the fit/silhouette is kinda of odd…just a bit too tight and straight. So far best Dior for her.

  • Angela_the_Librarian

Love this dress. It looks like she’s wrapped in video game pixels!

  • Aurumgirl

A good publicist, someone actually capable in her job, will do whatever it takes to make it happen. Glad Dior finally located one.

  • cmb92191

My 19 year old son approved of the dress! “Katniss got HOT!”

  • Kelly

I’d like this look if only for the fact that we got to hear the inside scoop on the roughness of the fashion world and the publicist’s lovely one-night stand. But the dress looks great on its own (I hadn’t seen the colored sequins in other online pics; it looks even better with those). I still hate the hair (it makes her look round-faced and childish), but it’s really well-styled here; not little-girlish at all. So glad they went with just earrings and no necklace. Very chic all around (though as someone else says below, it’s probably partly just the contrast to her recent sad looks that makes us all so rhapsodic). Oh, and that meme is totally hilarious.

  • nannypoo

I love it. I like the earrings too.

She said she had armpit vaginas in this dress. Pardon my stupidity, but what does that mean?

    • Angela_the_Librarian

She was referring to armpit fat that gets squeezed up when you’re wearing a tight dress. I think she was worried that her dress might have been having that effect.

  • TLJezebel

    Love those earrings.

  • jw_ny

This is quite a refreshing change of pace for her, however the dress is a bit too on point with the American Hustle era, disco-ish, and tube top-ish. I’m not crazy about the multicolored sequins either. Despite all that, she looks overall lovely and polished

  • Latin Buddy

I just get annoyed that she’s obviously picking dresses because of the brand rather than choosing whatever will look best. There is a sense of arrogance that is a little annoying. I don’t blame her. It’s the folks making the decisions that grate [ looking at you Rachel Zoe]

    • MilaXX

Contracts with fashion labels aren’t anything new. She’s wearing Dior because they likely gave her a nice, hefty check to do so. Not sure I see any arrogance in that.

      • demidaemon

It was probably the stipulations that came with the check. “You took the money; now you have to where whatever we pick for every major event until your contract expires.”

        • MilaXX

I don’t think they specify each dress. They probably send over a few dresses to choose from and between her and the stylist (Rachel Zoe) they decide which one she should wear. I thin the biggest issue has been Zoe not choosing dresses better suited to her personality. There’s a fine line between a stylist choosing a dress to help a celeb up their game and a stylist choosing a GTNYD. Unfortunately several of the dresses JLaw has been wearing this season are GTNYD.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I think this is my favorite she’s looked since she wore the simple red dress that first Oscars and served body and hair. She needs more stuff like this- simple, letting her body do its thing. And the color of the sequins is perfect, keeps it glam instead of Vegas.

  • SugarSnap108

I love your story and accept it as my truth. She looks beautiful. I’m not completely in love with the dress itself, but it has that disco-ball aura that feels right for an American Hustle star.

  • bertkeeter

Better….but please tell me this is NOT from the Haute Couture? Sequins by the yard….uh….no!

    • Mara Jose Benites

It is actually from the Couture collection. And one the best from it.

      • bertkeeter

Check out the Dior Haute Couture Spring collection…Tragic!

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

    Love it!

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

I love the story behind the dress! I only hope it’s true, lol.

  • Tatiana Luján

I love this, the makeup finally matches the new shade of her hair and the earrings are fabulous.

  • bellafigura1

I’d like to see some more shape at the bodice, she’s too flattened, and also, some hiking up, it’s sitting too low. I mean, it’s fine, she’s working it like a pro, but it’s not rocking my world.

    • MoHub

Ooh! You got this in while I was typing. Great minds and all that.

      • Sarah

It seems to be de rigueur to have things appear to ride low so much these days that I’m no longer sure what is normal.

        • formerlyAnon

Yes. I’ve decided to accept what I see as riding a bit low as normal, except when I simply can’t contain my complaints. I don’t want to become one of those old people who never have anything come out of their mouth that’s not a complaint. (I do think that as a goal, that’s fairly doomed, but if I start practicing early . . .)

          • bellafigura1

I’m so old I didn’t realize that riding low was a feature, not a bug.

    • bellafigura1

Check out the structure on Lupita’s bodice!

  • MoHub

It seems to be riding low. I can’t help but think if she raised her arms, she’d pop clean out of the top of that dress.

    • Yeah, she tugged it up several times during the Red Carpet.

      • Kristin McNamara

She tugs up every strapless gown she wears. She did it ONSTAGE during her acceptance speech the other day at the GGs!

  • ShaoLinKitten

She looks great, but I really hope she hasn’t made a long term commitment to that hairstyle. Maybe she’ll grow it out in time for her commitment to Dior to be over.

    • bellafigura1

      Already looks growing-out-ish to me.

  • carnush

    Gorgeous. The earrings are perfect.

  • Nazzzy

A WERQ as far as I’m concerned.

  • mlle

Love hair, makeup, and jewelery, but the dress is just solidly okay.

  • formerlyAnon

Aaahhh, youth. She’s the first one in a while in that neckline that hasn’t made me wonder where she lost her necklace, and I attribute it to the magnificence of that skin and those shoulders. Like her hair and makeup as well.

    • demidaemon

I think the earrings make up for the lack of necklace, at least from where I am sitting. Her skin does look fab, though, now that you mention it.

  • MaggieMae

It makes you wonder if any heads are rolling at Dior. Or on JLaw’s team, for that matter.

She’s gorgeous! And, it’s been one bad match after another this season.

This is good. Clean, simple. Suits her.

  • Maryanne525

Light years better than the Globes. Stunning.

  • Love the way some of the sequins are colorful (can’t tell if it’s colored sequins or just the way the light is reflecting). Very “bright lights, big city!”

  • Daenyx

    The story made my morning.

  • marlie

This is just gorgeous. I love everything: the dress, her makeup, and those earrings (to die). Perfect.

  • dalovelee

Lawrence’s team has nothing to do with Dior NOT doing a good job in understanding what works. Dior is high fashion huate couture. And this all translates if they can’t dress a young statuesque starlet with all the money available to them then mere humans need to walk away from Dior because we need alot more help and can’t afford to tailor make our Dior off the rack buys.
Dior can’t get away with throwing her under a bus and blaming Lawrence who is a beautiful girl but when put in a ridiculous frock…even she can only do so much to save it!

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I enjoy the made up stories more than I probably should.

  • xmixiex

  • CeeRich

I thought this was beautiful on her. Sometimes a fitted sparkly dress is just the right way to go.

  • GORGEOUS. And the backstory is hilarious! I like to think that’s EXACTLY what happened.

  • ashtangajunkie

I sincerely hope that your story is the real story. Either way, this is drop-dead gorgeous. Finally.

  • Mia Moreno

Finally a half-way appropriate Dior for Jen! (Even if it is still a bit stuffy.) Dior is just too mature for her sassy nature. Dior is for Marion, or Sarah Jessica, or even Natalie, not Jen. It’s a shame she signed the contract during this time in her career. I would love to see her in Miu Miu, or something.

  • ailujailuj

    yay! I love story time.
Jen looked pretty great here – so it was a happy ending for all.
ETA: a little stage makeup suggestion: she might have had less of a uniboob if she’d taken a little bit of dark foundation or eye powder and created some cleavage shadow or emphasized the space in-between her boobs – just ever so slightly.

  • crash1212

I love that the hair minions have finally figured out how to give her hot short hair. Having had very short hair for a number of years, I knew they’d figure it out eventually, but it can be difficult. Her head has been spot on for the last several outings, and now – FINALLY – Dior came through with a dress she looks great in and that I don’t hate with a passion. Well done Dior publicist!

  • Melanie_Bee

Not the most exciting or memorable dress, but sometimes simple is the way to go, and she looks gorgeous. I’m still not a fan of her short hair, but I do like the way it’s styled here. The hairstyle and the sequins give it the overall look a just a hint of the glam-rock feel (at least, I think that’s the vibe I’m getting), without being too much.

  • EEKstl

HA HA! That is EXACTLY how it happened! She looks great, safe but great. She is rocking some good earrings lately. ‘Do looks good.

  • Flawless. She’s just flawless.

  • DagnyReardon

I thought the same thing – well not exactly. But clearly they took the path of least resistance with this choice.

  • Gatto Nero

Simplicity + elegance. She was smart to go with a dramatic earring and leave off any neck jewelry. Looks classic and fabulous.

  • decormaven

Damn tootin’ this happened. One more fashion fail for JLaw, and Dior would be the fashion laughingstock for sure. Her Academy Awards gown better be transcendent.

  • Bethany Roullett

I bet JLaw found it hilarious that her last dress became a meme. I also bet that Dior did not. She looks great though. Love the sparkles.

    • Synnamin

I bet she did, too. She seems like the type of woman to totally take it in stride.

  • Trickytrisha

    Positively, absolutely, totally gawgeous.

  • Chevalle

Despising this hem. Loving this sequin sparkle.

  • trisker

    LOVE this story!

  • demidaemon

I love the story more than the dress, which is fine. Well-accessorized, but fine.

  • unbornfawn

Love your story boys. Bet there is a lot of truth in it. And I loved the creativity shown in the memes!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

The memes were great-Mr. B3 and I found them so much more stylish than that Dior hefty bag!

  • Jen

They seem to have finally decided on how to make the hair work. Looks good.

  • Dana

Comparatively, a win for Dior and JLaw

  • Hey, whatever works. Hope the publicist didn’t suffer with too terrible a hangover.

  • DesertDweller79

Big upgrade from that ridiculous bedsheet/electrical tape dress from the Globes. BTW, thanks for that link to the Post. Hilarious. This is a nice color on her. I like the simplicity a lot. Too bad it appears to be crushing her in the chest. Ah well. Can’t have everything.

  • Louise Bryan

“Look, in order to save some time and not become more repetitive than we already are, let’s just all agree that everything Miss Lupita wears during awards season is a de facto WERQ, okay?”

That would be because Ms. Nyong’o herself is quite a piece of WERQ, n’est-çe pas?

  • quiltrx

Love her hair, and I love the multi-color effect of the sequins! And those memes are hilarious. Think I’ll post one on FB for a break from the Richard Sherman arguments.

  • DeTrop

Love this. Top to bottom a WERQ.

  • boweryboy

    Fabulous, … just fabulous.

  • CeeQ

I love the hell out of those earrings.
Yes yes, she looks stunning but seriously, the earrings. I covet.

  • Sam AL-shaibany

Please everyone watch earthlings and gary yourofsky on youtube please and please go vegan it’s better for us it’s better for the animals and it’s better for the planet that we live on and be careful sugar is not vegan because of the bone char just search online for vegan sugar brands or just call the company or e mail them and ask them if they use bone char and be careful with the products that contain sugar just read the ingredients btw beet sugar and evaporated cane juice are vegan

  • Mike

I really like her dress, but I’m souring on her personality. She was so rude in the press room after ‘American Hustle’ won Best Ensemble Cast.

  • Closet Crisis

Awesome look, in and of itself, even without the comparison to the bedcurtain/electrical tape fiasco. Esp. love the hair/makeup.

  • queen b*tch

Thank the fashion gods, never have I been more relived to see someone in something so… standard red carpet. She looks fantastic

  • amaranth16

    Lite Brite.

  • Andrea Lentz

I think this is stunning and more of the type of thing she should have wore while promoting Hunger Games!

  • Oh my goodness she needs to shut the door on the House of Dior. Fast.

  • Alloy Jane

Finally, the hair looks cute. And that other dress was a hit for what it spawned. But this look is simple and lovely.

Anywho, I could really kill those stupid celebrity interviewers for spoiling Homeland. Not everyone has cable.

  • Nicole

atleast Dior finally dressed her up right
