Jennifer Hudson in Kaufmanfranco at the People’s Choice Awards

Posted on January 09, 2014

Pretty great dress, pretty wrong shoes. Are we wrong on that? Because we feel like we say it all the time.

Jennifer Hudson attends the 2014 People’s Choice awards at Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles, California in a Kaufmanfranco dress paired with Manolo Blahnik heels and Neil Lane jewelry.

Kaufmanfranco Spring 2014 Collection

But those are awful, right?

It feels like she’s missing something. A belt wouldn’t work with that dress and neither would a necklace. We’re thinking maybe some slightly more interesting earrings and a cuff or bangle with a bit more pop to it. Great makeup and hair, though. We never would’ve thought such a short haircut would look good on her, but it really sets off her face.

    Loooooooooove her lip color.

    Shoes are bizarre.

    • StellaZafella

Flawless to the ankles…then I see the retainer straps from my 1963 Barbie Doll…the ones you needed to secure to keep her on her stand.

    • e jerry powell

I’m not loving the lip so much. When she smiles that big, the lip line looks a little fuzzy. Interesting color when she’s not smiling with teeth, though.

    • jen_vasm

      That lip color is fantastic!
He toes are totally making a run for it.

  • Donyelle

her toes are clinging on for life!

    • YoungSally

Do you think she used boob tape to keep those shoes on or just Krazy Glue?

  • ojosazules

You are always right about the shoes. Maybe you should write a book about it as a public service.

    • Rand Ortega

Praying shoe tips are in the (soon to be released) book.

      • MilaXX

        or the sequel

        • Rand Ortega

& by law it now has to be in volume 2.

  • lexilexi

I want whatever she is wearing under that dress.

    • Sarah

Right? I NEED that foundation garment/s for my wedding.

    • kimmeister

It is am impressive foundation garment for sure, doing all the things it should be doing, invisibly.

    • clatie

I just posted the same thing. I have been staring at this photo intermittently all day and I CAN’T SEE IT.

      • conniemd

You can see the right bra strap in the third picture down, but it’s a great bra for its seamlessness and the great lift job it does. The model isn’t wearing one at all.

      • GTrain

I agree on the bottom half but I can see all kinds of bra in these photos

    • ThesisMonkey

      *this*. my first thought also.

  • bravobravp

LOVE her with short hair. The shoes are gross.

  • EEKstl

Love the dress but wish she’d worn the longer version on the model. Shoes look like she has bandages around her ankles, not a good look. Love the hair.

    • MoHub

I actually like it shorter, but the shoes are criminal.

  • nannypoo

I like her hair this way. The shoes suck. I hate the lipstick.

  • Evan

    LOVE the hair!

  • boweryboy

    Shoes? She’s wearing shoes?

  • flamingoNW

    HORRIBLE shoes…

  • Rand Ortega

What shoes? You mean those bandages around her ankles aren’t from a terrible accident involving piranha?
Though I wish she had slipped the neckline to her shoulders like the model.
Everything else (Hair is giving me LIFE!) is perfection.
A metallic sandal would’ve made the look a total WERQ.

    • Pennymac

Exactly! Looks like bandaged ankles and she’s standing on tippy-toes, to me.

    • formerlyAnon

Imagining the piranha accident that would leave both ankles bandaged but the feet unscathed will while away a good third of the trip home today. For some reason known only to my subconscious I believe that Jamie Lee Curtis will be putting in a guest appearance. (I have a rich, if entirely useless, inner life.)

      • Rand Ortega

Hilarity is (has? My grasp of grammar suddenly sucks) its own usefulness.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Or metallic pump, WITHOUT ankle straps!

  • Ms. Schmidt

I’m just never going to be on that lip color bandwagon. And I won’t be beating a drum for those shoes either. But the dress is good. And the hair is great.

  • I don’t like the dress on her, at all, and the shoes are practically non-existent. Love her hair, though.

  • kimmeister

I think this dress could work with a necklace, but not just any necklace.

  • Sarah

Clever shoes! You’ve tamed those recalcitrant feet. They will never get away now! They are tied up good! Now you can torture the toes at your leisure…

    • kimmeister

But the rebellious toes are still trying to make a run for it!

  • Scimommy

Loving the short hair on her. Seriously, that is a WERQ hair move. Dress is pretty killer, too. (though it feels like there are some magical undergarments doing a lion’s share of the work)

    • demidaemon

True, but she’s a smart girl for employing them correctly.

  • lundibleu

The shoes are horrid, and take away from what is otherwise a fantastic look for her. I think longer earrings might have just added a little something, but otherwise it’s near perfect.

  • Glam Dixie

Those shoes are awful, and I don’t think this is a good dress for a woman with a larger bust. It highlights her boobs oddly. But that said, her hair looks the best I’ve seen it here.

  • frannyprof

She favors ankle straps, and I don’t know why.

    • kimmeister

Because the #@(!* designers keep putting them out!

  • aquababe

She is totally working it in that first picture. Shame the shoes are so unfortunate.

  • jilly_d

First time I’ve really loved that haircut on her. And she should always wear that lipstick. She looks fantastic! And she joins Naya Rivera on my irrational celebrity hate list (oh, maybe it’s kind of rational – those weight watchers commercials made me stabby)

  • Valdri8

When you have wacky-toes – you cannot be wearing those shoes. Those little wiggies are all over the damned place

  • Bright stone bib necklace. This is one of her best.

    • alyce1213

Agree. That and better shoes would have made this legendary.

    • MoHub

      Or maybe a choker.

  • KT

Those shoes are just plain hideous. But I don’t think anything else is amiss — she looks absolutely gorgeous otherwise.

  • greymain

    LOVE the new hair!!!

  • What shoes?

  • guest2visits

She is amazing in that dress!! Shoes are disappointing. So many things she could have deployed with that clean slate of a dress.
How crazy awesome to be able to chop off all your locks and look this gorgeous.

  • e jerry powell

Why do you say haircut boys? It could be that she had a weave or extensions taken out and this is how she’s working it before she has the next unit put in.

NEVER ASSUME, particularly with an African-American woman. Remember that Beyonce rocked that short look for about 36 hours before she had her next weave put in, right?

That part aside, for a second I thought she was wearing the runway shoes. Then I rubbed my eyes and looked again, and realized that they’re actually WORSE than the runway shoes.

  • Trickytrisha

Sigh, such a gorgeous woman in a beautiful, classy dress with dreadful shoes detracting from the overall picture. Seems like so many celebs lately are clueless about their footwear..

  • filmcricket

I prefer the runway version, and yes those shoes are horrendous. Her head-suit looks amazing.

  • rondele

Love that dress on her. She looks amazing. My quibble with the dress is that front seam, which you can see pretty clearly, at least in pictures. The shoes are tragic; lip color is fabulous.

    • StarburstLady

Yes! That visible front seam is driving me crazy… I can’t tell if it’s intentional or not. It seems too subtle to be one of those “I decided to highlight the construction elements as decoration” things, but it’s visible both on the runway and red carpet versions, so…

  • d4divine

Gold straps on the shoes instead of white…perhaps a mixed metal bracelet

  • GillianHolroyd

The hair and the eye makeup are perfection.

  • MilaXX

I love the simplicity of this look but do not understand her love of ankle cuffs on her shoes. It does the worst things to her legs, but she appears drawn to them lie a magpie. She should be wearing the shoes Lena Dunham wore earlier this week.

  • clatie

I absolutely obsessed with figuring out the undergarments she’s wearing. Whatever is under there is FLAWLESS.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Great dress for Hudson, and the lipcolor and hair really are working for her. The shoes? I don’t know-I don’t hate them, but she could have done better.

  • veronkimo

Don’t really mind the shoes. I mean, yes it looks like her feet are about to slip off, but the overall effect is good. I would have liked to see some dangling earrings. Also, is she wearing one of those Samsung Galaxy Phone wristband?

  • Call me Bee

Perfect from the ankles up. Your feet should at least fit on the shoes…

  • CatherineRhodes

She needed a fab pair of drop earrings and different shoes. I love this dress, and her hot pink lipstick and short haircut. Devil’s in the details.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

i may be in the minority but since she has lost all that weight, she doesnt look her best anymore, her face just looks all wrong for her body. too thin. i dunno..

    • bellafigura1

      Completely disagree, respectfully.

  • It’s funny, they look like the same shoes the model is wearing, except Hudson’s are white and the model’s are silver. Makes all the difference in the world! Also, I must say I detest that there is a visible vertical fold of fabric or something that goes right down the sternum. It’s not a size issue, it can be seen in the model’s photo, too. Completely detracts from the look in my opinion.

  • housefulofboys

When your toes are brushing the carpet, you know your shoes don’t fit your feet. Is that such a difficult concept?

  • bellafigura1

No, you are wrong. It’s all working perfectly here, for me. She is exuding confidence and self-acceptance and the dress is divine and the shoes are fine. Not perfect, but fine. This woman seems like sheis back from the dark side — the violent death in her family, her weight issues — and is in command. I actually think she is not getting the right props, enough props. This outfit KILLS.

    • demidaemon

      I agree!

  • SewingSiren

Love the dress. The shoes, aren’t they the ones where you had to delete all the comments about the models feet being tortured? cuz that’s what they look like. Torture devices.

  • elemspbee

not wrong, not wrong at all.

  • MzzPants

LOVE her hair! Big-ass earrings might have been reeeeally good.

  • Truthiness2U

Horrible shoes aside…I love everything else about this look. The hair, which I agree, unexpectedly works on her. The make-up…not a fan of the lip colour generally, but feeling it on her, especially with a look that is so stark and clean besides that. And I like the dress. I think Jennifer looks great in white, and the shape of the dress is flattering, and to me, eye-catching because of it’s simplicity and how much that flatters her. So shoes aside, I think this is a total win for JH.

  • megohd

I love her hair so much. She looks amazing. I don’t mind the shoes.

  • Tatiana Luján

silver stilettos would have been my shoe choice.

  • murt

The worst part of the shoes is that her toes are dangling off of them.

  • Jeannie Shmina Greenwald

She looks fabulous and I’m not even going to quibble about the shoes.

  • Diego!

Her toes will become matches in 3, 2, 1…. Whoever set the trend of those ugly shoes, must be deported to an abandoned island. They suck big time. The dress looks great on her but I’m not sure about her lips…

  • decormaven

Shoes keep this from being a full-on WERQ, but I’ll give her snaps for working a short ‘do and looking fab in the dress.

  • Va-voom, Jennifer!

  • KateMaryC

The shoes are better in the silver version. The white version look like hospital ID tags.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

    Blah dress. AWFUL shoes!

  • Jessica Freeman

The glaring seam down the front bugs. The shoes are crazy because the toe straps blend in with her feet so it looks like she has 2 restraint devices around her ankles and she’s just walking on her tippy toes.

  • RussellH88

    This dress needs a turban.

    • MoHub

      A metallic turban.

  • Julie Parr

Hair = best pixie cut of the decade. Love it.

  • crash1212

This would’ve been a WERQ by my standards if not for those awful, awful shoes. I can’t think of a look where those shoes would work. Other than that, this is slammin’. Kudos to the shape-wear/underpinnings expert on this look. From the ankles up, this is perfection.

  • Judy_S

OK, I don’t care for the shoes as shoes, but I think they kind of work here. The white seems like part of the dress and draws your eyes to her feet, which look polished and naked. Given the fact that ALL red carpet shoes look agonizing to the feet, this almost invisible look minimizes for me the usual sense of pain.

  • snarkykitten

Those shoes are like magic. They’re disappearing right before my very eyes!

  • Cyprienne Zed

It just gets better the farther it gets from the floor because HAIR YAAASSSSS GAWD

  • Christine Hart

This would been awesome in a bold color, then you wouldn’t feel like you were missing something.

  • gigi kennedy

i love the hair on her. and you are so right! a cuff would’ve been killer.

  • Janet B

Shoes and jewelry are so often screwed up…..why?

  • stubbornthoughts

Thank you for not showing a close up of her feet. They’re making me uncomfortable.

She is serving great face and hair, and that’s about all I’ve got to say.

  • Lilah

I think she looks great and I honestly don’t have a problem with the shoes. I actually like the clean lines, although she could have gotten away with something more intricate given the clean lines of the dress.

  • amaranth16

I think she needed some Glamazon gold heels. The shinier and more metallic, the better.

It’s amazing how ethereal it looks on the model – J-Hud took it to a totally different place.

  • fasttimesatsb

    Lipstick is giving me life

  • pdquick

A couple of bangles and a pump in, say, teal would have made this a WERQ. Those shoes are just sad.

  • Gorgeousness…until the ankles. Those straps look like hospital ID bracelets.

  • traceyishere

Those straps around her ankles look like band aids.

  • Aidan B

Great dress, hair and makeup. Shoes are offensive despite the fact that they barely exist.

  • shelley514

She looks fantastic even if her toes are clawing their way out of those sandals. Perfect lip!

  • melanie0866

It takes some serious cojones to wear a clingy jersey white dress. And I’m so glad she (apparently) has on the correct undergarments. But it’s too white and too lightweight for January.

  • Lilithcat

    She needs some major earrings.

    And different shoes.

  • I think the dress needed to be worn off the shoulder, but lbr – she’s one good pair of shoes away from a WERQ here.

  • Imasewsure

I like the original length better but this looks good (except the shoes)…. definitely needed something something though but still pretty overall

  • The haircut! PERFECTION.

  • AmeliaEve

The really great thing about her look here is that she is really owning her figure. For the longest time she had the excessive poise of the ex-fat girl who likes showing off her newly slim body, but doesn’t really believe it can last. She looks really comfortable here in a way I have not seen before.

  • Courtney

I could barely tell that there were shoes at first glance.

  • demidaemon

Those shoes are horrible, but she is making that dress sing.

  • understateddiva

so does she decide to wear All The Jewelry sometimes, and then at other times, none?
