James Marsden in Ovadia & Sons at the 2014 Critics’ Choice Awards

Posted on January 17, 2014

Unfortunately, the necessitudes of awards season means we don’t have a lot of room for men on the site roster at the moment. Everyone wants to talk about ladies in gowns, and relatively few people in comparison want to talk about men in tuxes. Hell, even we find men in tuxes boring to talk about.

Trust James to serve up something worth talking about:

James  Marsden attends the 2014 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California in an Ovadia & Sons suit paired with Givenchy shoes and a Title of Work tie bar.

Ovadia & Sons Fall 2013 Collection

This is a skosh too tight and we wish he’d tighten that tie, but we love this look. The hair’s a little high and we wish he’d shaved, but we find ourselves grateful he didn’t follow the model’s lead and sport a beret. We love a jaunty little look, but we can’t with berets on men.

It totally fits him and his goofy Prince personality. Speaking of Prince Edward …was I the only one that squeed a little bit when he presented Princess Giselle (Amy ) with her award last night and she said she ” had to” kiss him ? He’s just adorable. Why isn’t he a bigger star????

    • Chaiaiai

I’ve heard he is THE NICEST person (friend who does sound editing has worked with him). Maybe he’s TOO nice to be a big stah? He’s also too handsome, I think I would be speechless in real life. I agree on the hair, TLo.

      • ana170

I don’t think it has anything to do with nice. Like a lot of other people, I thought he was just another one of the bland, forgettable good-looking guys that abound in Hollywood. That is until I saw him in Hairspray (then Enchanted). The revelation that he could sing and do comedy, I think, has finally started to set him apart.

      • MemHey

He walked into a chocolate shop where my friend was working. Said friend immediately burst out in a song from Enchanted, and he took it good-naturedly. In a town where you can camp out at Starbucks to spot a celeb, it says a lot when a fella is genuinely kind to strangers.

    • Jessica Freeman

I unabashedly love that movie. You were not the only one.

    • Claire

I’ve been rewatching the last season of 30 Rock and found him SO enjoyable and effortless on that. I wonder if he’s better suited to TV and hasn’t tried out for as much there?

    • H2olovngrl

I must find this on YouTube, NOW.

  • So pretty.

  • @Biting Panda

I was all set to snicker at James, then I saw the model. What a douche. But hey, it worked, because now I’m thinking James looks pretty spiffy. That much suit requires a clean shave though. Yeah, the pants are tight, but that special snuggness is making me blush a little, so I like it.

    • sojourneryouth

Where in Sam Hill is the model going? To read the poetry book under his arm in a dark, smoky café? To Scotland, via pack mule? To spend the night peeping at sorority girls outside their dorm windows? Such weird, creepy styling! But yeah, James looks pretty awesome.

      • formerlyAnon

I feel reasonably sure that the model will be smoking clove cigarettes in his cafe/on his mule/out in the bushes outside of the dorm.

        • sojourneryouth

Oh yes! Skinny, colorful clove cigarettes of some obscure European brand.

        • Heather

          I dated that guy (shame).

          • @Biting Panda

No shame. How else does one learn? Never regret. Never repeat.

          • demidaemon

            Yes. Life lessons all around.

          • ailujailuj

true… unless the stories are really good – then take one or two for the team.

          • H2olovngrl

I think we all dated that guy in the mid nineties.

          • BKagainwiththesweatpants

I was married to that guy (double, possibly triple, shame).

      • Anna

I was gonna say, I’m getting an existential Vincent Gallo vibe. Definitely weird, creepy styling.

James, on the other hand, is a bit of alright.

        • sojourneryouth

TOTALLY Vincent Gallo! Right around his Brown Bunny period. *shudder*

          • Anna

I think there’s something to that! *Ugh* There aren’t enough hot showers in the world that will cleanse the memory of witnessing that motion picture.

      • decormaven

That model’s look is creepy-plus. I don’t even want to know the backstory behind this styling.

      • fursa_saida

I vote for “to Scotland, via pack mule.” He can write a daring travelogue about it.

  • gabbilevy

Clearly snug was the intention of the designer. Still James here can do little wrong. Hawt!

  • Is that Robert Pattinson moonlighting as a model there? LOL looks a lot like him..

I almost wish he had done the tartan scarf thingy.. 🙂

    • carnush

Looks more like a super skinny Jake Gyllenhaal going to a Sartre symposium in a cold room with lots of skinny men in glasses in berets, smoking pipes arguing over their thick leather-bound volumes.

      • H2olovngrl

I kinda see a bearded Ewan McGregor.

    • FancyPhilly

I wish he had gone whole hog too. That would have been awesome.

  • MilaXX

Very nice plaid suit. Love his choice of shoe & pocket square.

    • Mary229

I love a good pocket square.

  • Shawn EH

I suppose it’s meant to be tight, but I’d like it better if it weren’t. Still, he’s got the body for it. And those cheekbones!

    • Trent

      I’m with you — it’s just too tight (and a skosh too short) for my taste. And the rise is too high — Jon Hamm could never get away with this suit. ( ;

I blame Thom Browne for all these ridiculously shrunken suits…

  • homofascist

This is pretty much my dream suit. And how I would love to unwrap a shoebox with the word ‘Givenchy’ on it.

  • BendinIntheWind

    • MauveSF

Liz Lemon and Criss Chros 4EVA!!!!!!!

  • formerlyAnon

I like, but the colors and tie are so serious and conservative that it looks like office wear** to me. And that makes the scruffy face REALLY seem out of sync.

ETA: **Not any office I’ve actually worked in. But I have visited one or two where he might be the brash young one on staff.

    • @Biting Panda

When I was at the architecture firm, I worked with That Guy. The body was ON POINT but the pants were snug and short, and the shirts were busy and tight. He biked in, ate healthy and was of Scottish decent. So yeah, hawt, but so not of my universe.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Oh, I would’ve paid good money if he’d worn the beret!

  • SugarSnap108

Definitely a little snug, but I can’t find it in me to complain. The tie is the only part that bugs — the tie itself, and the clip, which seems unnecessary here. Not quite sure about the brown shoes — think I’d prefer black.

  • Nancer

Very nice. I approve! (I’m sure James is relieved to hear this….)

  • ailujailuj

    well goddamn… nom.. nom..
I don’t get the loose tie – I accepted it with the fat tie, but are men doing that intentionally? or is there a structural or space problem that prevents them from closing the gap – cuz I mind the gap.

  • acevedob

I love that suit. Nevertheless, he doesn’t look great in it.

  • Imasewsure

The model is hilarious! Props to James for not boring us… Love me some pattern suits!

  • Jessica Freeman

…and he looked even more tasty on TV last night.

  • Viviennne

not a fan of plaid suits….but really unfortunate choice in shoe color and style – gad – brown shoes? – the models’ shoes are so much better as is the plaid scarf because it takes a boring and gauche plaid suit to the next level.

  • shirab

This is a For Stars Only suit, I think. The kind that when my husband sees it, he will say “I would get smacked in the face if I went out in that suit.” (He says the same about seersucker.)

  • In_Stitches

It’s a WERQ for me. I may be influenced more by the wearer than the total effect, but I refuse to fight it.

  • Ann VerWiebe

I will say the plaid makes the pants a little “package-centric,” n’est pas?

  • Cheryl

I don’t mind the tightness, looks good on him. I have to say I laughed out loud when I saw the model. I know it’s not the model’s fault how he was styled, big ass book and shawl, but it’s freaking funny.
Still waiting for the Uncles comments on the luminous Lupita….

    • Eric Stott

I’d go out wearing the suit AND shawl…but I’m 56 and have the right to be eccentric

      • Cheryl

But would you be carrying the big ass book? I carry books everywhere, but I leave the voluminous tomes at home.

    • I don’t even know if there are words for the luminous Lupita in that Calvin Klein. I’m feeling like I need a pacemaker each time I see her in something new.. might need the paramedics on standby for the Oscars.. especially if she breaks out a ball gown because I cannot imagine how amazing she would be in one. 🙂

  • Qitkat

    Thank goodness it’s not argyle.

    • Lori

It’s going to be a long time until I can look at argyle again without wincing a little.

      • demidaemon

        Don’t remind me!

      • conniemd

Me too, and I’m a fan of a nice argyle sweater or vest. That collection really freaked me because to me argyle is conservative pattern, not clownish.

  • Dandesun

If only Scott Summers were this stylish in the comic books.

  • DaveUWSNYC

I saw someone dressed like this on Sunday, waiting in line for brunch, calling for his children, Ava and Odin.

  • Sam Smith

I like the suit, but what is up with his eye. It’s like he got stung by a bee (or Botox).

  • marlie

Definitely an “A” for effort – that’s a gorgeous suit. Agree with everything TLo said.

  • jw_ny

He seems to be one that has a bit of style flare, and takes pride in his appearance..so kudos to James. He looks sharp.

  • JauntyJohn

Love this — and he was sensational in “Hairspray.”

  • KinoEye

    Can I have some, please?

  • Diego!

#SausageFriday and indeed he looks amazing! Yes, it’s tight. But when you have such body and attitude, you don’t need anything else! 😀

  • Lisa M. (ReVoir) Kramp

Oh, what a scrumptious little man muffin! Bravo.

  • Danielle

It made my pants move, which is pretty impressive considering I’m female.

  • Looking good, Cyclops!

  • Trickytrisha

Rather adorable, squinty eyes and all.

  • MzzPants

WIN. thank God it’s not a standard grey suit. And the pants are fine because what this drab winter needs is an ample dose of shapely man thigh.

  • VicD

    Why are tie bars back?

  • a_liking

oh, he looks DIVINE. i love a man in a tight pant. 😉

  • LeelaST

Sharp, but yes, just a tad more room in jacket and pants would have been divine, plus a shave and a cinch up on that tie (hate droopy ties.) Don’t quite understand when a brown shoe is appropriate, think I’d prefer black with this look.

  • withbreaththatisbaited

Oh Criss Chros, you look good!

  • quiltrx

This is pretty great, and I can normally take or leave him. Wish the shoes were black, though.

  • Jacob Bowen

Sorry T & Lo but I EFFING LOVE his scruff…not sure if if it’s an early 20’s phase or that I’ve always LOVED James Marsden, but this made me fan myself.

  • Lilyana_F

Sigh, this man can do NO wrong in my eyes… He needs to be in more things.

  • AnnaleighBelle

    He’s looking positively Hannibalesque.

  • Dan_In_NYC

This is a be me AND do me in my estimation. If I could choose to be a male celeb, he would be on my short list.

  • Yes to this.
