IN or OUT: Diane Kruger in Erdem at the Hollywood Stands Up to Cancer Event

Posted on January 30, 2014

We’re turning this one entirely over to you guys.

Diane Kruger attends Hollywood Stands Up To Cancer Event in Culver City, California in an Erdem silk jumpsuit.

Erdem Vala Eames Garden-print Silk Jumpsuit

We keep wanting to like it but we can’t seem to articulate any reasons why. We know we don’t hate it, although, as with 99% of the outfits we review, we disagree with the styling choices. The shoes or the bag. Diane. Not both at once. We’d say get rid of the bag. We’d also, since we’re apparently being so chatty, want to know just what the hell you were thinking with that hair.

What do you think, really? Good? Bad? Indifferent? We suppose we’re indifferent, but that seems kind of hypocritical of us, since we’re always asking for outfits with personality. Is this just too awkward somehow? Could the right styling really save it? Is this on the wrong gal? Could Miss Lupita make it work? Is that a rhetorical question? See what we mean? Do you think we’ll ever stop asking questions? Is this annoying you? Should we stop now? Ok.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! Adventurous and colorful. I can’t hate.

OUT! The Blanche Deveraux Boudoir collection. All I’m saying.

You kittens surprised us by voting Jenna Dewan-Tatum’s somewhat … anatomical dress IN.

I’ll leap in with an “OUT”. Awkward is exactly the right word here……..

  • Monabel

    Oh, dear. No.

  • Ginger

Oh HELL no. I’m having early 90’s flashbacks. Somebody hold me.

    • Sarah

      Sheer sleeves! Noooooo

    • LipstickForPigs

Right? I’m thinking Contempo Casuals. Out

      • Aurumgirl

It’s essentially a bowling shirt (buttoned up tight) and capri pants. It’s never not going to look boring.

    • SugarSnap108

No kidding. Someone posted a pic of me on FB today, from middle school. I was wearing an outfit eerily similar to this.

  • AceOn6

    OUT. Looks like pajamas.

    • Clash D

SILK pijamas. Hair and makeup looks pretty though.

  • ScarlettHarlot

  • RohanMBN

I’m going with indifferent. However, if “The Blanche Deveraux Boudoir collection” does exist somewhere in this universe, I would pay good money to go through that based on the nightgown she wears in the first season alone.

  • Mazenderan

Her hair and makeup are so clean and fresh, and then there’s this mess from the waist down. It’s shapeless, pulling in all the wrong places, shiny *and* sheer, and the pattern is headache-inducing. No. It even looks Godawful on the model.

  • Eovaai

    OUT. Just no.

  • Scott Cooper

    My eyes!

  • Betsy

In. The sleeves are awkward and would look better taken in or extended to the wrist. Keep the shoes, change the bag to a subtle metallic. The self-belt should be a solid, but I’m not sure whether black or a color would work better.

  • Sarah

Blanche Deveraux’s boudoir collection would include a turban, which would be an improvement. I hate those minty, minty shoes. OUT.

    • kimmeister

They look like they’re made out of chalk!

  • hughman

Jerri Blank. That can’t be a good first impression.

  • Adrianna Grężak

It’s well styled, but honestly, there are better things she could’ve worn. A different sleeve could’ve helped. I vote OUT.

    • CelandineM

I agree with you, that sleeve is the biggest problem. overall that top looks too baggy on her. OUT

  • Carla_Charlton

Floral fabrics are one of my favorite things, but they are hard to make into clothing that doesn’t look frumpy. The blousey-ness (is that a word?) of the top and the pants just make them look dated.

  • sagecreek

NOOOOO! This is from that same collection as the twee little number that Lady Mary had on, right? She could (barely) pull it off. DK? NO.

    • lunchcoma

I don’t think even Lady Mary pulled it off.

I feel guilty, since I entirely support the return of floral prints to the red carpet, but this just isn’t the way to do them.

    • formerlyAnon

I felt bad about restraining myself to one “out” and an “utter hideosity.” Thank-you for taking up my slack.

  • MikeW_Vegas

I’m getting a “Rosemary Clooney in White Christmas” vibe. But Rosie had that fabulous black ensemble in the Carousel club to wear. not this dreck.

  • Lilah

It would be a whole lot better if it fit her. She is too short for it and it’s buckling in the chest. Get it tailored, can the purse and make her hair fuller and it would be an In for me. As it is, it’s an out.

    • makeityourself

I thought the same thing and it does look to be somewhat better fitted on the model. BUT, I believe the ugliness is really caused by the cut and design of the garment in the first place. If you imagine it in black wool crepe, one of God’s most forgiving fabrics, it still sucks. Who could possibly look good in a jumpsuit that had tapered, cropped legs; a belted waistband at the high hip; wide, short sleeves, and a collar that buttons to the base of the neck? There is no redemption here.

      • Carrps

Yes! Yes! Yes! A definite OUT and mostly due to the poor cut of the pieces. She’s way too petite to wear loose pants that both taper at the ankles and end above said ankles. Makes her kinda like a floral Bobo punching doll.

  • kimmeister

OUT, because I hate every single thing about this look. Ok, the bag is kinda cute, but not paired with anything else she has on. Michelle Dockery definitely picked the better Erdem look IMO.

  • charlotte

I usually love Erdem. What is happening today? OUTissimo.

    • sagecreek

An upvote for the use of “Outissimo”. I am jealous and kind of hate you because you thought of that before i did.

  • Kathy

Out. How is it so many beautiful people with so many resources wear clothes that just aren’t quite right in so many ways?

    • kimmeister

      I suspect rose-colored contact lenses.

      • Kathy

That makes sense. I suppose I ought to be grateful because these celebs give T&Lo and us so much material for drive-by bitchery. It’s like psychotherapy I can afford. 🙂

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Meh. It’s not horrible but it’s not excellent either. I feel indifferent towards you, floral pantsuit of Golden Girl extraction.

  • MzzPants

I think this jumpsuit is meant for the very tall, which she is not. Hemming the sleeves may have helped. Or not. OUT.

  • OUT – but it looks like the sort of thing Rashida Jones would like.

    • kimmeister

Which means that no one in their right mind should probably wear it.

    • SugarSnap108

Poor Rashida, but this is absolutely true.

  • altalinda

Not even Diane can pull these pjs off. Nothing about this is good. Ok, maybe the purse. OUT.

  • lalahartma

    Out. It’s rather heinous.

  • MartyBellerMask

    OUT. Nothing good here.

  • Susan Velazquez

OUT. Props to her for not defaulting to a black pump though

  • ModernDowager

Out. Blech on those sleeves, especially with that collar

  • Jess Collett

OUT. This would have been a nice outfit if it had been a blouse, but that is a hideous jumpsuit.

  • Slanted & Enchanted

OUT, although it pains me. I want to like this (sucker for the print), but the top is kind of an ugly shape. And I don’t like her hair.

  • sunflower

  • Sorry, I find it just plain ugly. OUT.

  • samo_samo

Out…an ensemble that might have been best worn by Blanche Devereaux to have afternoon drinks with the girls.

  • Give this to Evan Rachel Wood…..she’s the only one I can even imagine pulling this off. On you, though, Diane? OUT.

  • schadenfreudelicious

The mere thought of having to undo all those buttons, belt, etc to use the ladies room gets an OUT…plus its fugly…

  • Vickiefantastico

Out. I’m like you guys, I WANT to like it, but I just can’t. They look like sloppy pajamas with Easter egg shoes. Even a style semi-maven like her can’t save this. And I think she knows it.

  • Alyssa

Out…I actually really love printed pants, but wished she’d paired it with a solid top and not one so “old-lady-ish”…I like the shoes with the pants, and she can send me the purse. 🙂

  • paintedfish

was the SU2C event really a Mary Kay party? cos no one is wearing any eyeshadow.

  • Madam Von Sassypants

I was about to yell, “SEPARATES, NOT TOGETHERS!” before realizing it’s a jumpsuit. An easy OUT.

    • jtabz

Yes! The main issue to me seems to be that there’s such volume on the top *and* bottom … The top would look cool with a skinny black pant, and the bottoms would look much better with a fitted little sweater. We need to set these jumpsuit halves free from each other!

  • lunchcoma

Out. If she wants to wear these very pretty silk pajamas to sit on her patio and read the newspaper, I have no objections aside from mentioning that the legs seem a bit short. If she actually wears it in public, then I have a big problem with this.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I thought BLANCHE DEVERAUX before I even scrolled down to the choices, so… OUT.

  • ojosazules

Stella! Blanche’s outfit is really horrible! Make it go away!

  • hmatz

Out. This just makes her look droopy. The hair is really what kills it, though.

  • Hermitage

She belted it in to give herself a waist, but it ruins the slouchy lines of the pantsuit, which was took it from ‘deliberate hipster dressed at 1950s upholstery’ to ‘fashionable slumber party’. I think maybe Rhianna could pull this off…

    • Imasewsure

Well RiRi would have left the entire top unbuttoned and worn it with better shoes but I think you are right… she could make this work like no other

    • MilaXX

I thin Solange could have made this work as well.

      • Hermitage

Yes! Solange would look great in this. And she would wear some fierce kapow! makeup to edge it up a little. Florence Welch also perhaps…I think for this outfit you either need to be really tall, to let the drop waist sit properly, or have really long legs so the drop waist doesn’t stumpify you. Diane is petite and proportional torso/legs wise, so it doesn’t work as worn on the model and looks weird belted at her actual waist.

  • mixedupfiles

The sleeves just remind me of a sloppy guy in a short-sleeved shirt, so over-sized that the sleeve hems are at his elbows.

  • JauntyJohn

In… though it’s not really to my taste.

  • DominoEstella

IN and I like her hair and makeup. OUT with the bag.

  • boweryboy

I like the shoe, but OUT.

Also, I can happily say I wasn’t responsible for voting Tatum’s vagina flap dress IN.

  • IraKi

    OUT! It is just bad.

  • vitaminC

I’d say it’s more Carol Burnett than Blanche Deveraux, but yeah. OUT.

  • sienna elm

NO!! Hate the shoes…it’s awful all around…but I’ll take the purse. 🙂

  • MilaXX

OUT but based purely on the styling. I’m not a fan of light colored shoes with dark clothes. I’d go with a black shoe and change the purse to the blue color of the shoe. I like the hair and makeup. The hair looks healthy and she doesn’t have dead lips.

  • KiP07

Out. I usually love Erdem and I usually think that she pulls off questionable looks, but for the first time I can remember I don’t completely envy her figure.

  • Richard

I usually hate jumpsuits, but I like this one a lot. I’m going to give it an IN. The hair could be a bit better though, and having a belt that’s in the same print as the jumpsuit itself seems like a really weird idea.

  • Ruth Preston

Outski. The print is very like one on the dress I wore as a junior bridesmaid at my cousin’s 1978 wedding.

  • LeelaST

OUT. This certainly answers the Q I asked about Michelle Dockery’s dress – Yes, black collar & cuffs would have improved it (sans print as we see here). The proportions just seem off: the sleeves are too long, the pants too short, the waist/belt area too bulky. Would have loved a black shoe with the fuchsia bag. And yet another celeb without a hair stylist.

  • Imasewsure

I don’t hate it on the model (although I don’t love it either) so styling is definitely an issue. The hair is out to me… the sleeves seem awkward on her… the shoes are awful and so it’s OUT overall

  • livesarah

It doesn’t work. I think a pair of paint-splattered overalls would look more chic. Out.

  • decormaven

Out. The clutch and shoes are competing- one or the other, but not both.

  • Sara__B

OUT. It’s all so … fussy.

  • Pterodactyl111

Out, but just just barely. If the sleeves were slimmer, then I would have said in.

  • anneland

Out. Eveything looks awkward, too big, or pajama-y. The belt? Really?

  • Jacob Bowen

OUT, but I can see that it would work with better styling. The hair is too pretty for this look and the bag and shoes pull the outfit in two different styling directions, they will NEVER work together. Also, that bag was already carried by someone you’ve showed before and I don’t recommend that ANYONE carry it.

  • formerlyAnon

OUT. Utter Hideosity. Makes her look waistless and almost dumpy.

I like the shoes with it, though.

  • SierraDelta

Give it to Solange. She’d know what to do with it. (If it were given to me, I’d burn it.)

  • LaSylphide

Makeup: great. Everything else: dowdy. OUT.

  • rkdgal

    Nope. OUT.

  • On the fence: I like it from the knees down. But can’t put my finger on why north of her knees just doesn’t do it for me. Perhaps it’s the sleeves and the buttoned up top?

  • michael tanner

Its the pantsuit version of Lady Mary’s dress!

  • Lori

Out. I think wearing the top and the pants together is probably too much of that print to work off the runway, even for Diane Kruger. It just looks so fussy and pajama adjacent.

  • greymain

    out…that hair …wtf?????

  • unbornfawn

OUT. The problem for me is that the outfit looks droopy on her. The proportions are off. It is much more striking on the model. Another case of the actress being too short for the outfit, something that is getting all too common. It would be nice to see some designs with a shorter wearer in mind. No to the shoes and the hair.

  • somebody blonde

In, but weakly. I think this would’ve been better as a tube top. I really don’t like the whole sheer business at the top. And it would’ve been better served with some kind of updo.

  • Hetha Innis

    No Way! So out.

  • BobStPaul

It’s an incredibly blah outfit. It’s as though it can’t really decide what it wants to be. The styling is pretty horrendous and the first thing I noticed about her when I saw a picture of this on another site was the same as on this one – what horrible hair.

  • Tom Markiewicz

IN. I actually love it, i think it’s got elements of being classically pretty while still having edge and glamour to it. Probably could have done with a subtler bag, but I still don’t hate it.

  • jw_ny

I just can’t think of anything nice to say about the outfit.

  • marlie

It’s OUT. Her hair and makeup look pretty, but I’m not loving the outfit. jumpsuits – with cropped pants – are just not ok.

  • BrianaJC

OUT. Keep the pants and the shoes.

  • Kaytee

Out, there is just something off, it looks awkward, and she is a professional clotheshorse.

  • AmeliaEve

OUT. Brenda Walsh is going to scratch her eyes out when she finds out they are both wearing the same outfit to the Mother-Daughter Spring Tea at West Beverly.

  • Ma. Gabriella Dutari

  • carolie_king

I treat all upspeak like legitimate questions. Drives my daughter crazy. So:
    I think it’s awful.
    No. Yes. No.
    Somehow, yes.
I don’t think so, which doesn’t mean someone won’t prove me wrong, and I think they could start with a different belt.
I don’t think there’s a right gal. Lupita would be beautiful, outfit would still be fugly.
Probably. Yes. I hope not. Maybe a little.
Yes, I’m sure you have better things to do.

    And… OUT.

  • Anna

I’ve always wanted to know what would happen if a shower curtain mated with a pair of pyjamas.

  • another_laura

Out. The dropped waist is a mistake, the sheer sleeves, the pale blue shoes. And I don’t like the fabric to begin with. A real disappointment.

  • In_Stitches

Out, the Mad Men hair is killing it.

  • demidaemon

I guess I’m going to be the contrarian here and vote this IN. Love the outfit on her, love the accessories, love her hair and makeup. I’ll stand behind you, Diane, even if I’m the only one!

  • trisker

OUT — shirt would be awkward on anybody, and I’m trying to think how to improve it. No sheer? Shorter – tighter – no sleeves? ALL sheer? Anyway, it’s bad. If Diane can’t wear it nobody can.

  • It’s a nice fabric, and I like “prim chic” in general, but man… it’s a really ugly jumpsuit, isn’t it? OUT.

  • Gener1c

Out. Please don’t besmirch the name Blanche Devereaux with that insult!

  • Columbinia

  • jjjoy

Diane’s one of the few actresses that actually has a style of her own on and off the runway. I think I read she doesn’t use a stylist or makeup artist. I’m pretty impressed she always make such interesting choices on her own. This is true to her personal and IMHO impeccable style and for that it’s an IN.

  • bailey

  • Reality TV Casting

in in in those ice blue pumps are brilliance

  • Maya

out. faaaar into the realm of out-landia.

  • Jangle57

It just kept getting worse as I scrolled down – OUT

  • ailujailuj

I don’t like that print enough to keep seeing it – what – two or three ladies have worn something similar in the past week or two? She’s too short for that style, her hair didn’t get all the way ‘did’ yet. Makeup is quite pretty. I do like the powered blue.

  • pookiesmom

I think this is pretty ugly. OUT.

  • lesmaha

Out. The fit is wrong, and I don’t think she loves this either. Pants are too full and short.

  • Snailstsichr

    OUT. This is just horrid.

  • Sunraya

Out. Ugly outfit, horrible bad, dreadful hair. Major OUT.

  • quiltrx

OUT but I probably would have worn this in the late 80s.

  • scoobynacks

Trick question, guys. Lupita would never go anywhere near this. Something about the top of this reminds me of those shirts with flower embroidery on either side that are worn by old school country singers–I just can’t do that seam across the chest the way it is here in combination with the collar. At least the one Michelle Dockery is wearing has the detailing in the middle which makes it work better. Also, floral pants, ugh. They remind me of an outfit my Barbie had in the 80s.

What did Erdem call the collection? “Spring Funeral”?

  • lizajane1776

    Hate the hair.
    Hate the lip.
Hate the blousing of the top.
Hate the purse (does it match the lip?)
Hate the hand in the pocket.
    Hate the shoe style.
    Did I mention, out?

  • bitchybitchybitchy

That’s a very sad waste of good quality silk. Diane looks dowdy and mumsy. OUT

  • Poeta Paz

OUT, it just doesn’t fit right and I hate button up shirts.

  • AnnaleighBelle

    Sweet Jeebus, No!

  • CatherineRhodes

  • ankali

OUT. Immediate OUT. That floral, with the sheer, and then it’s a jumpsuit — there’s something so 90s mall rat about this look. She is capable of soooo much better.

  • Those pants are incredibly awkward, and paired with that hair? Dude, if she wore this to middle school, the mean girls would give her a swirly.

    I’m just saying.

  • amanda lynn

  • Janet B

    Nope. OUT
I didn’t like Lady Mary in the companion dress from the same collection either.

  • veleri

    nope nope nope nope :/

  • Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

I was intrigued by the head shot, but as soon as the full length shot came into focus, I disliked it. I love the print, but not how it is being used here.

  • gorenlj

She doesn’t like and I think that contributes to the awkwardness of the entire outfit.

  • Tatiana Luján

I don’t like the proportions of the jumpsuit. The torso and the sleeves are too long and loose.
The hair coloring is bad and the clutch is a redundant and clashy pop of color.

  • katiessh

the fug girls have started a bump watch, and while i sometimes find those uncomfortable, they’ve been right a weird amount of the time. her clothes do seem to be looser than normal

  • GreenTurtle

Man, I want to like this, too- I think the fabric is so lovely and I actually don’t hate the sheer with it (which is rare for me). It’s a terribly unbalanced look, though. The proportions and tailoring seem to be kind of all over the place. And she’d look better with her hair pulled back. It’s certainly very Erdem, isn’t it?

    • GreenTurtle

Ah! sorry, Tatiana- didn’t see your comment before I made mine.

  • RussellH88

Didn’t Lady Mary wearing something just like this a few posts back?

    • Gatto Nero

Yes, a dress (also by Erdem) with a white collar and cuffs, and rampant floral appliques.

  • Jessica Freeman

OUT. Fit is everything when it comes to jump suits and this is atrocious. Full Stop.

  • Diego!

I’m gonna give her an IN, though those shoes are awful. This is nice, for an eldery woman but nice indeed 😛

  • DesertDweller79

OUT. It really looks ugly on her. And if it looks ugly on Diane Kruger then something is very wrong.

  • Vanessa Reyes

Perhaps if this were two separate pieces and she either wore the pants or the top with something else it may have worked but as a jumpsuit the fit is horrible. I don’t mind the shoes so much but the hair is not working. OUT

  • VicD

Out. I seriously had something like this in the late ’80’s, and I look back with chagrin that I wore it in public.

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

Out out out. The top half of the pantsuit works, but the pant part does not, and the hair just makes no sense.

  • Emily Roach

  • MannahattaMamma

Just don’t stand her next to Lady Mary at the London “NonStop” premiere b/c all that twee would make people’s heads explode, all over the little bitty posy print. feh. women in baby clothes.

  • prisma

Just a big ole pile of “meh” to me.

  • It’s not ~awful~ but I really don’t like it. Out.

  • barbarienne

Yeah…I gotta go with OUT. It’s too busy, too much going on. And to be clear, I blame the clothes. I don’t like it on the model, either, and I doubt any styling would make this work.

  • ashtangajunkie

Out. I want to like it, but the proportions bug.

  • empath

well…. to be kind, she does look comfortable….but the baggy fit does nothing for her, and the overall look reminds me of high-end pyjamas (yes, in the old-school style, spelling with the ‘y’). She has “bad hair day” slicked down hair…. all that’s missing is a fabulous (and annoyingly matching) kimono…. so I am voting OUT.

  • rissa42210

In – looks great. Take the bag away and give her something more subdued and wintery. The shoes can stay as long as the bag balances it out. The hair looks so morose. I’m fine with that styling, but it should have been picked up or dressed up a little bit. Right now, it’s trying too hard for that i’m-perfect-but-i’m-not-into-this look.

  • crash1212

OUT. outoutoutout. First off the hair – WTF? This borderline Amish jumpsuit needed something else with the hair…anything else. The shoes and bag? NO. Also, this is just an ugly outfit. Awkward sleeve length. Horrible textile. Schlumpy fit. This outfit has made me crabby.

  • Michele

OUT. This outfit can’t be saved.

  • carnush

    IN. She’s making it work.

  • Rosary Jones

Blanche Deveraux Boudoir collection is too kind for that jumpsuit. It reads grandma’s garden party to me, and much to old for her. OUT.

  • OhSheila

OUT. I don’t dislike it, but I feel like that’s not the venue. She and Gwen both look like they got dropped off at the wrong event.

  • ChelseaNH

Out. That’s too much floral for any human being. Maybe SWINTON could pull it off, but we’ve decided she’s not human, right?

  • Shawn EH

Out! I like Diane in skirts or jeans. Apparently not fussy capris.

  • Pepper Collins

It looks like she’s wearing fancy pajamas. Yikes. OUT.

  • conniemd

In. Her face looks clean and fresh with real colored lipstick. I actually like her hair. The outfit is kinda meh, but it is event appropriate and overall she looks presentable.

  • ovarB

In. Mainly because it is an outfit that doesn’t catch my glare for being hiddy or gorge.

*I think you should rename this feature OUTfit or INfit?? 😛 sorry…an outfit being OUT or an infit being IN struck me a stupid silly this morning.

  • iloathethesea

Umm, this is the shit. Love it.

  • luludexter

    out out out

  • Sara Hottman

Don’t care for the clutch or the hair, but the jumpsuit is sassy and I love the shoes with it. In.

  • Ann VerWiebe

I think the shirt is just too boxy. If it was fitted and the sleeves were shorter, it would be much better. Maybe.

  • melanie0866

OUT. Looks like an ’80s shower curtain.

I didn’t like the print on Michele Dockery, either.

  • Guest

Lupita couldn’t make it work, but I could see it on Patsey…

  • Bernadette

Out, the bag is too much and the fit seems off.

  • judybrowni

  • msdamselfly

In I think she looks lovely (except for the pink bag). Love the soft hairdo next to the sheer fabric.

  • Gatto Nero

It’s just awful. (I’d sob if I saw this on Lupita, by the way. But there’s zero chance she would wear this.)

  • Sweetpea176

  • Mousentrude

Out. Pyjamas, and ugly ones at that.

  • Sara McDarby

Out! That is one ugly outfit!!!!

  • altissima

Very fug. So much ugly. Out.

  • Jessica Rose

out! That purse, that lipstick! No not forgiven.

  • DuBey2

Did all the hairdressers/excuse me, Stylists, go on strike that night? I hate almost every hairstyles I’ve seen from that event. All heads looked flat and boring.
