IN or OUT: Cate Blanchett in Lanvin at the 2014 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards

Posted on January 17, 2014

Damn, this lady knows how to do “effortless elegance” like no one else.

“Blue Jasmine” star Cate Blanchett attends the 2014 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California in Lanvin.

But we wonder if the Bitter Kittens will agree with us on this. We love it because the color is gorgeous on her (and slightly unusual for the RC), because she’s wearing that amazing belt (She and Sandy need to have a belt-off) and because it’s so simply and flowy and non-fussy. But it might look too shapeless or casual to some eyes, so we’re genuinely curious about this one. To us, this is chic. But to someone else, it might look like a gown-length t-shirt with a big-ass belt.

Bitter Kittens make the call:

IN! Gorgeous in its simplicity.

OUT! You’re kidding me, right?

The Minions with Opinions loved Elisabeth Moss’ Xena gown, voting it IN.

Out. It looks way too casual for the RC. If the hem was shortened to her knees it would be the type of thing I’d wear to a friend’s birthday party.

    • altissima

Yeah, but it’s not shortened to the knee, is it? If it was made of Paisley cotton and didn’t have a belt it would look like a hippy dress. If it was slashed all over you could wear it as a zombie costume.

  • cocohall

Best Dressed Nun in the Convent. She can make nearly anything work, but this feels like she is doing fashion penance.

    • jen_vasm

Love the nunnery-chicness. The arresting lip shade gives it a nice pop.

  • israel8491

She looks stunning, full stop. This is a dress lots of people could look good in. But only Our Lady Blanchett could make this look appropriate for a red carpet like Critics Choice. She could wear a snuggie and make it look couture. IN

    • kduffin7

I completely agree. This woman is a goddess. And she can act. IN

    • Coleen

I’m pretty sure that this *is* a Snuggie. IN.

  • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

Out, this looks like sleepwear. Id have preferred to see her in an actual onesie. ;)

  • clatie

    FLAWLESS. IN.

  • Victor Beiramar Diniz

IN, it takes a true player to achieve this level of stealth chic

    • http://twitter.com/janedonuts Jane Donuts

She is formidable. Perfect lipstick too.

    • RebeccaKW

Agreed. She looks amazing. IN. On just about anyone else, it wouldn’t work in this type of situation.

  • MissFern

    could not love this more.

  • Scimommy

Sorry, but OUT. It looks sad.

  • DKBB

In. She looks elegantly casual (and comfy). But you are right, on anyone else it would indeed “look like a gown-length t-shirt with a big-ass belt.” :)

  • Annarosa

IN for me. too bad the dress color was too similar to the one Oprah wore.

  • Dave Fellner

    IN, she looks great!

  • Samantha Klein

In. Blanchett can generally do no wrong.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I LOVE it on her, but I do wonder if it’s a bit casual for the event. My mother used to advise me to dress down, just slightly. She was of the opinion that overdressing made you look like you were trying to hard. Maybe Cate got the same advice. IN, with slight reservations.

    • Mara Jose Benites

Well, the event is held in an airplane hanger so she definetely not overdressed. Gorgeous either way.

      • random_poster

Yeah, what’s up with that? An airplane hanger? Were all the nice banquet halls booked up?

        • Mara Jose Benites

I know right? But those awards are a hot mess and so badly organized that it is not a surprise.

  • AmeliaEve

In. I wish the sleeves were a little bit narrower. It would make it less T-shirty.

  • altalinda

In with a demerit for that ghastly lipstick.

  • ashtangajunkie

In. I love this on her.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I guess I’m feeling contrary today. This feels very “dinner at a friend’s home” to me, not “awards ceremony in high Hollywood season”. OUT.

    • megalomanic

There is no way I could stay friends with Cate Blanchett if she turned up for dinner at my house looking like this on a regular basis. It’s just too much for a mere mortal’s self-esteem to bear.

  • CPK1

    In!! One thousand times in!

  • http://dentsdelait.tumblr.com/ Nancy Marion

IN. This is the first dress from Lanvin I’ve liked in a while, but probably only because she’s wearing it.

  • Sara Brams-Miller

In. She can do no wrong.

    • MoHub

      What she said.

  • RCH

    OUT

  • lobsterlen

    In.

  • jilly_d

Wow I have never been so in disagreement with Uncles as I am today – I think I hate this belt even more than Sandy’s. OUT!

  • MilaXX

IN – It’s simple but it works. Such is the power of Cate.

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

IN but I feel that with that shape very plain top you need an extra-lifting bra. And would it have killed her to put on some earrings?

  • amanda d

I think the problem is the sleeves. I think if they were longer (and tighter) it would take the dress up a notch. And the puffiness above the belt just makes it look a tad too casual. For the colour and belt only, a tentative IN.

  • @Biting Panda

IN. Even thought I despise neon lipstick. Here it provides the needed contrast and the proof of thoughtful effort.

  • sagecreek

    IN IN IN. Gorgeous.

  • Jessica Freeman

Oh this isn’t easy…I think it’s the fit that is off for me, it looks like it was a dress that was too big, so she tried to make it work by putting a huge belt on it. Also, not in love with the lip color or the hair….so I’m giving our beloved Cate an Out on this one. She knows better.

  • filmcricket

IN. I wish she were wearing a great pair of earrings, but otherwise this is fabulous. I like it a lot better than some of the more daring looks she sports.

  • bhl_1123

On anyone else or at any other event, I might have a different opinion, but its an IN. Effortless Chic, indeed! I would have added a nice earring though to dress it up just a bit.

  • ModernDowager

    IN!

  • az67

    IN.

  • xmixiex

    pretty. earrings, please.

  • antheapena

Love it. Great lip colour too

  • SugarSnap108

Out, though it pains me. This is too effortless, IMO, and the lipstick is…not good.

  • jspark

    IN

  • Carolyne

Everything else aside, it give me hope: At 60 years old, I could probably wear this to my daughter’s wedding, but would I be mistaken for Cate Blanchett?! Here’s hoping….

  • teensmom99

IN. BTW, in LA where very skinny people with lots of hair usually wear t shirts, jeans and really expensive sandals, a long belted t-shirt is a step up. But Cate does not need to be graded on a curve. This is simple elegance with a bit of a Santa Monica vibe.

  • Carrie

In, because she has grace and poise to pull it off. She looks amazing. Not many lady stars could pull it off, though, that’s for sure.

  • Kathy

Out. She looks good, but this reminds me too much of Lane Bryant loungewear.

  • Veronica Mers

I love the color. But the top really does read “t-shirt” to me so I am not fully convinced. Love the lipstick color too.

  • CatherineRhodes

    IN

  • Danielle

    DAT FACE

  • eowyn_of_rohan

IN. It was straddling the line, but Cate being Cate tipped it into the IN category.

  • Richard Harper

    In.

  • Emily Giovanni

Gorgeous and simple. Definitely in for me.

  • Laura Renee

    IN! Gorgeous in simplicity, indeed.

  • princessricky

i didn’t even bow down. i just died. amazing.

  • http://myriameron.blogspot.com/ Heron

UUUGGHH I love this. This is literally my ideal evening look if I ever wore anything in the evenings except pajamas. Stunning.

  • mommyca

It’s chic BECAUSE she is wearing it… I don’t think it could be pulled off by some other mortal :)

  • StellaZafella

    In….that is all.

  • Richard Banger

I loved it, and then I saw “gown-length t-shirt with a big ass belt” and I can’t unsee it. However, she looks chic. Her hair is mesmerizing. So… IN!

  • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.com/ Catherine

    IN. Love it, love her.

  • Heather

looks like something I’d wear on vacation

  • kouredios

In. It’s true that it looks a like a gown made from a T-shirt, but that’s part of what makes it an interesting look, and besides, the Critics’ Choice Awards aren’t as formal an event. I just kind of wish she had worn some earrings with it, to dress it up just a skosh. Nothing too dramatic, but some sparkly studs would have drawn some contrast to the T-shirt dress as well as dressed it up just a bit.

    • teensmom99

Couldn’t agree more that the t-shirt simplicity is the essence of the brilliance here.

    • ailujailuj

I love the idea of a t-shirt gown… let’s do more! but don’t like this fabric – whateverthehell it is. looks too bulky (around the arm seams and neck band) so I imagined it in an actual t-shirt fabric and decided it missed. Either that or maybe a snugger fit in the bodice without leaving the t-shirtness – don’t like the blouse at the waist – too much.

  • halleygee

In! So chic. I saw another photo of her walking in it with the dress flowing – flawless.

  • Diego!

    IN+
    She looks stunning!

  • brown-eyed girl

In. But only the Great Cate could carry it off. Loving the lip color.

  • pookiesmom

    IN.

  • mrspotts66

    in. on her, definitely in.
on someone else? i’d have to see it to judge it.

  • Claudia Fernandes

    very very in

  • siedhr

Both. It’s her, so the whole vibe supersedes the unflattering bulging of the fabric above the belt, the lack of earrings (sorry, women’s ears look odd to me when empty), the embarrassed spinster neckline and the aging, harsh lip color. It’s a bad dress in a great color with a cool belt that doesn’t go with it. A boat neck would have done wonders in balancing the silhouette.

I look and it’s chic. I look closely and my eyes start twitching. But I still like looking at her, because SHE’s effortlessly chic and classy.

  • Tracy Walker

Out but only because I can’t see past the day-glo lipstick to really appreciate the dress. That shade is not her friend, and I feel bad for the cheetos that died to make that color possible.

  • Chickadeep

IN. Love the simplicity here, and the color is *gorgeous*, though I think it is crying out for SOME kind of earring.

  • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

No. If you study for just a moment, this is not a Tshirt nightgown. There is a certain design and form. Stunning.

  • decormaven

In, because I love the belt and that’s the way to wear flat-ironed hair- it’s straight, but it doesn’t look like a knife edge. A bracelet to echo the ring would have been nice, but she is working the look well.

  • Sofia Vesson

    She is gorgeous…

  • Tatiana Luján

In. It’s the polished hair what elevates the look.

  • Hoffa_w_HerHead

OUT. And let’s not pretend if Julia Roberts were wearing this that anyone would consider liking it.

  • Anna

In. Because Cate Blanchett is the kind of woman who can make a gown-length t-shirt with a big-ass belt look impossibly chic.

  • Sunraya

In!! I love it on her!! I love everything but that orange lipstick. She does seem to default to Joker lipstick too much, but I just hate those colors on lips, so maybe it is just me.

  • amanda lynn

    in

  • PlethoraofBooks

    In for me!

  • Michael_Jones

IN. IN. IN. (How many times am I allowed to vote?)

  • MaggieMae

IN, although I want to change the lip color, keeping it bold, but something with less orange in it.

  • ovarB

In. But just barely. If the top was just a touch tailored and not so slouchy there would be no question.

  • ojosazules

    In. Très chic.

  • ailujailuj

love the color – it’s a great color that many people can wear. but the fabric looks jersey – or something bulky, so it’s an out for me. the belt is a HELL YEAH. loving the belts ladies!

  • Kristin

IN. In, in, in. I would so wear this. I would not look as effortlessly chic as Cate does, though. Much to my chagrin.

  • boweryboy

OUT. It’s a gown-length T-shirt with a big-ass belt that only Cate could rock. If she can make a Stella McCartney look good, she can make anything look good.
Even though I appreciate her Swinton level fashion sense, and she looks lovely here, this does nothing for me.

  • Kitty Shepherd

“Effortless” is the exact problem with it…it kinda seems like she didn’t put much work into the outfit. It turned out okay, but OUT, because anyone could wear it. Y’all should start assigning style handicaps to different celebs. That would be amazing

  • texashistorian

In, because she’s Cate Blanchett and just simply ethereal. I can’t get behind the hair, though… suburban mom do.

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

    Come on, now. IN.

  • Betsy

    IN. But only on her.

  • In_Stitches

Proving that she can wear a snuggie and look chic, IN

  • Blair Sylvester

in for the simple reasom that she looks great

  • sojourneryouth

Out. When a dress reminds one of the Saturday Night Live “Just cinch it!” sketch from the nineties, you’re doing it wrong.

  • annrr

Out. That neckline is a little too “Fruit of the Loom” for me. Not digging the lipstick either.

  • Janet B

    IN

  • Yorgos

she doesn’t need to care about a dress, she will have a second Oscar soon. IN. LOVE. ETERNAL.

  • rissa42210

    IN. Love!

  • Garcia Loca

IN. Besides, even if La Cate had worn an actual floor-length T-shirt with a belt, it would have been an IN. She elevates everything she wears to cool/chic/hip/vibrant.

  • flamingoNW

    IN

  • carnush

    Sleek, simple, and sophisticated. IN!!!

  • ana170

T-shirt was my first thought. Out. Also that lipstick is distractingly loud.

  • Little_Olive

Oh so elegant -stylish, uncomplicated, feminine and luxurious all at the same time.

  • Emily

IN IN IN IN. Anyone who doesn’t love this has been taking crazy pills.

  • Taylor Bigler

    IN

  • Joanna

The only problem I have with this look is the lip color. Which may be fine on her generally, but NOT with the color of this dress. Otherwise, it’s IN.

  • AC

In. Chic, as the two wise men said.

  • River

    All the way in.

  • IraKi

I absolutely loved it! The colour and the belt really make the look. It is not the most original outfit in the world but the shape is nice, the colour suits her, it is venue appropriate and accesorized rather well. What more do you want? I for once covet this dress and belt more than Idris Elba. IN with all my love.

  • jw_ny

    IN

    Dull & forgettable tho.

  • Jangle57

The belt helps but the shoes? Obviously can’t see much of them but what I can see of them in that last shot does sort of reinforce the friar barefoot in his robes image. Sigh, I’m torn – almost anyone other than Cate it would be an automatic out – sorry but that shoe shot just pushes me over the edge – OUT

  • Anna Vasquez

“But to someone else, it might look like a gown-length t-shirt with a big-ass belt.”
    ^on
This is why it’s IN. I feel like the ability to wear something and have everyone know it only looks this good because it’s on you is like, the definition of IN.

  • Nazzzy

IN. Love it. Coulda used a bracelet or something, though,

  • Lindsay Donohue

IN, that lip is out of control. I’m a sucker for a good lip color though. Honestly, I’m a sucker for Cate in general. She could make a garbage bag look chic.

  • Zaftiguana

IN. The fabric quality elevates it from t-shirt dress and the belt elevates it from shapeless. And you can’t beat the color, or the fact that she nailed the hair, make-up , and jewelry choices for the look.

  • Kaytee

Out, I love Our Lady Cate, but this looks like sleepwear or beachwear. Love the color, hate the style, Out to the nth degree.

  • tallgirl1204

I’m with t-shirt with belt. In the early ’90s, I had a black t-shirt dress I used to wear with a big gaudy belt. It was super comfortable and easy, but I don’t know that it was ever very stylish. That’s immediately what came to mind when I saw this, even before I read your write-up. I love Cate, and she looks fabulous as always, but… this is a red carpet, and we must hold her to a higher standard of goddess-ness. Sorry, but Out.

  • Peeve

I really like this a lot. On most other people, this would look too plain. On Cate, it looks chic as hell, especially with the great belt. Love her!

  • StillGary

It looks like Peter Popovich, 1987.

  • Shawn EH

IN! But needed a bangle, earring or necklace. Maybe just one, preferably in white or diamonds, but the ruby ring is not enough.

  • mjude

    IN

  • gabbilevy

In. It does look like a gown-length t-shirt with a big-ass belt, and THAT IS JUST FINE.

  • BrookeNR

    In. She is just lovely.

  • AzulFashion

What is it with short sleeves on the full length dresses? They are everywhere. I am not a fan.

  • julnyes

She looks amazing and if she was going out for brunch with friends she would win all the awards. I think this is too casual for the venue however so she gets a little out.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Compared to Julia Roberts’ dress, this seems like cazh done right

  • Arlette Barahona

Now that you mentioned a t-shirt, I can’t get that out of my head. The neckline is not helping or the length of the sleeves, but ultimately I want to touch the fabric. I think in person the fabric would be fine enough to elevate the look above t-shirt territory.

  • MaggieMae

She’s tall, 5’9″. I’m always struck by how statuesque she looks.

  • Rhonda Shore

IN – because she makes flawless/effortless elegance look easy. It’s not.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    IN.Effortless chic is exactly it.

  • Nancer

    In. Love this.

  • Caaro3

IN. No improvements, embellishments, bling, alteration necessary. Adore the color.

  • kcnitch

Out. I agree with the oversized shirt thought. Boring.

  • Sara Hottman

T-shirt gown, but she’s working the hell out of it. In!

  • luluransom

IN. So chic. Things look effortlessly elegant on her because she herself is effortlessly elegant.

  • Imasewsure

IN but a little jewelry might have been nice

  • Jake Donohoe

In. I think she looks awesome. Love the color and the simplicity.

  • ThesisMonkey

IN. On lesser beings this would be sad, but she looks gorgeous. Love the color, and the lip plays nicely with it.

  • Elizabeth Berkana

A belt is what Julia R needed to polish up her dress. Even before I saw Cate and Sandra I thought: JR, run and find a great belt! The three of them would have made the belt NEWS!

  • jkatkins

So very IN. Queen Cate can do no wrong in my eyes. Bow to the Queen, minions.

  • Emily Smith

    In!

  • Tricia

IN. Love that color on her. She could wear a giant t-shirt for all I care and still look gorgeous & other-worldly.

  • chrissybee

In. And I would like a front row seat to the belt-off, please.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

IN. It’s the wearer. I don’t know what kind of contract Emma Roberts has with Lanvin but it is not doing her any favors. Cate, on the otherhand…

  • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

    IN. It’s perfect.

  • phylora

IN. A more contrasting belt might have dressed it up more, but, still, I really like this.

  • Michelle Wilson

I’m not a fan. The dress is too full and shapeless and I’d prefer it with Sandy’s belt.

  • Lori

In, but I’m pretty sure that’s only because it’s Cate. It’s a floor length T-shirt. On the vast majority of people that is not much of a look, even with a great belt. She’s making the outfit, not the other way around.

  • Qitkat

Put her (meaning ME in her dress/belt) behind the wheel of a Porsche, and we’ll talk.
    Also, this means IN.

    • LL

I agree. All she needs is a silk scarf to protect her hair if it’s a convertable and she is good to go. A fabulous, classy, classic IN!

  • Bootsy

It took my breath away at first glance. It is perfect for her, absolutely right– from draping to cut to color to styling (love the lipstick!) Huge IN!

  • luludexter

absolutely IN. I love the color and and the simplicity works with the belt

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

In….I am loving the belts and the long short sleeves (an oxymoron but still love the sleeves).

  • KinoEye

In, but JEWELRY. Lots of it!

  • Sarah

IN Iove that color. And she looks as beautiful as you can possibly look in a big, floor-length t-shirt.

  • dash1211

Love it and her. Definitely in!

  • MarieLD

    I want to be her.

  • Spicytomato1

In, in, a thousand times in. And I think I need that color for the new sofa I have been contemplating.

  • marcia miller

Out. Casual, shapeless, blah. And that orange lipstick is nasty!!

  • kittenwithaquip

I vote this an IN. I think it would have come of less pajama-y if she’d worn some sort of bangle or cuff and earrings. Nothing too fancy, but just big enough to add an impact. I love navy on pale skin.

  • EEKstl

IN, LOVE the color and LOVE the extensions. I like her with longer hair.

  • elleg929

    IN. So chic.

  • marlie

It’s IN, but not quite perfect. Pluses: the color and the belt. The general shape of the dress. Cate’s hair and makeup. Minus: The dress seems a little too big.

  • Carly

In. Maybe it looks like sleepwear, but it’s pretty fabulous on her. The only thing that gave me pause was the lip color, but I think this is just not my personal preference for her face.

  • LaDonna Carpenter

It DOES look like a gown length tshirt with a belt….and I LOVE it! IN IN IN!

  • anotherkate

I’m in the t-shirt/belt camp. It’s actually okay, but I would like it better at a beach restaurant than an awards show.

  • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I love it. She’s earned it after wearing that to-die-for gorgeous Armani Prive gown at the Golden Globes. She reined supreme, high in ratified air with that beautiful beast of a dress on her – so I say – let her chill in a comfy, low keep, swish of a tee-style dress today. Perfect belt accessory. Let your hair hand down, Kate. It’s Critic’s Choice. Compared to last Sunday’s festivities and the Oscars coming up – it’s a day of rest.

  • Elana Bryan

Sorry uncles TLo…this is a bit OUT for me.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

It’s an IN for me because this look surely had everybody looking at her without being loud.

  • demidaemon

My only problem is that it seems sinfully under-accessorized. Other than that, I have no issues. Cate rarely does wrong, in my book. IN.

  • fananafanafophalec

IN for god’s sake it’s the critic’s choice awards and she looks gorgeous. I’d be curious to see what the model looked like in it though

  • Bernadette

In! This is so Cate’s dress, would probably look sloppy those less skilled.

  • http://recapscallion.blogspot.com/ Claire

In! I like this 1000 times more than what she wore to the Globes.

  • nycfan

IN but LOL, When I scrolled down, I have to admit, I thought, wait, isn’t this just a floor-length T-Shirt with a cool belt? Still think its cool and dig the color, but definitely fell into the predicted category I guess.

  • conniemd

IN. I would have liked a lower, more interesting neckline, but it looks effortlessly chic without looking casual. Is the color a deep forest green?

  • JauntyJohn

IN, but I’m not entirely convinced this is a peep-toe look.

    • Anplica Fiore

Agreed – I also don’t like the lipstick color, but really a minor quibble.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

IN. But she does raise the SWINTON dilemma; is this only good because she’s wearing it?

  • colorjunky

I think it depends on the fabric it’s made of, if it’s silk IN, if it’s tee shirt material OUT. Also, I think her foundation is too pancaked on. Normally I think she does no wrong.

  • Sunshine16

    IN, she’s rocking it.

  • Charles

100% In. It’s atypical for a red carpet but so is she.

  • Alyssa

I vote IN…but only due to her sheer magnificence. Perfect lip color for that dress, IMO! Love the belt.

  • frannyprof

IN. I even like the orange lipstick.

  • formerlyAnon

In even if it is a t-shirt dress. Though I’m biased, I wore this look for a while in younger days, albeit with a shorter tee-shirt dress and light years less expensive wide black leather belt.

  • Brittany

Her head is amaze. That lipstick colour is divine on her but don’t love with the dress…which I could give or take. But still, IN.

  • Trickytrisha

IN. Perfect way to go casual, but not too casual.

  • Danielle

IN, because it’s Cate and she gets an IN from me no matter what she’s wearing.

  • kim bunchalastnames

nothing cate blanchett does is out, imo. she’s the almost-swinton, the tilda for those who just can’t. i love her and her many strange choices.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Gorgeous–color, fit, shape–everything. And the belt is absolutely perfect for the look.

  • http://brianfortedesigns.com/ BForte

    She looks fantastic. 100% IN!

  • Kirstin McAulay

IN, fabulous as only Madam Blanchett can be

  • Sabin

Of all the sister wife comments I’ve ever seen, this seems like the best fit. Out.

  • crash1212

OUT. The lip shade and shapelessness kill it for me. It is a great color and this is a fab belt…not enough.

  • rh33

IN. However, could have used a gold cuff or bolder earrings (or boulder earrings.)

  • Tracy_Flick

I don’t know if I can give a full “out” to anyone whose face and hair look so flawless. However, that is a droopy t-shirt of a dress, and the colors of the dress and belt seem not contrasting enough. Let’s call it an OUT+.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

    In.

  • Akemi

I love it. She looks GORGEOUS.

  • Lilithcat

    I think it’s too droopy-looking. So OUT.

  • trisker

LOVE this dress and belt — IN. Hate lipstick; wish for earrings.

  • Lower L

    Gown-length T-shirt with a big-ass belt.

  • Sara__B

IN. Yes, it’s “gorgeous in it’s simplicity”. (Simple, gorgeous earrings would have been a nice addition, though.)

  • Nellie Wilson

    IN IN IN!

  • lundibleu

In because it works nicely. I suspect on other people, or with different styling, it could be an out.

  • ampg

Nope, I’m sorry, but this is one time when you guys are giving her too much benefit just for being Cate. Think of it this way – If Angelina Jolie wore this, she would look equally stunning, but you’d put the look right in the “pulling a Jolie” category, and you’d be absolutely right. OUT.

  • Tlazolteotl

IN. A beautiful counterpoint to her GG dress.

  • Tom Markiewicz

IN! Love it, love the whole thing.

  • MzzPants

    IN. Almost Tilda-like.

  • Danielle Colman

IN. Cate makes this work for two reasons. 1) She’s about eleven feet tall. On a shorter or stockier woman, this would look slouchy, but Cate’s height balances out the volume and makes it look breezy. 2) She’s 44. A drop-dead gorgeous and exceptionally well-preserved 44, but still: on a much younger woman this would look too casual, but Cate’s maturity makes it look studied.

  • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com Kristel

I think she’s IN – there’s no way that billowy t-shirt style nightgown of a dress should look good, but she does look elegant and beautiful.

  • procrastinatrice

Ah, I think this is lovely. That green is perfect for her coloring. I thought I would hate that lipstick, but nope, it brings some necessary glam to the outfit. So very IN!

  • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

The polished hair and makeup make it work. Plus, what lovely posture! IN.

  • Hazelnuts

Gorgeous color and on-point accessorizing. IN.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

    OH SO VERY IN!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

OUT. Also, McD’s orange drink lips.

  • Jenna Marie

IN. But I disagree about the belt. I don’t like it one bit. It reads 2009 Forever 21 to me… but I wasn’t on board with Sandra’s either. Overall though, the look is stunning.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

In! Love it and it’s perfect for this event.

  • Verascity

Love the dress, hate the makeup. Still, IN.

  • Adriana_Paula

    IN!

  • Random Compliments

    INNNNNNNN I WANT IT ALL

  • Kathleen

In. This isn’t a “Red Carpet” red carpet so I think a more casual elegance is perfect.

  • Barbora

    Biggest IN ever!

  • Maya

out. this isn’t a red carpet look at all!

  • VicD

    Out. You’re kidding me, right?

  • SorayaS

IN. It looks chic because she hasn’t styled it too casually. Her hair and make up is impeccable and the belt makes it looks more polished and put together rather than slouchy (a thin belt would have been awful. Though I wonder what Sandy’s belt would have looked like with this dress…)

I wish we could see more of the clutch but I don’t wish we could see more of the shoes because I feel they might be awful.

  • elemspbee

IN. Easy elegance indeed. Nothing bad about this at all. it’s stunning. Clearly this Critics Choice Award red carpet is not as “formal” as the others. They’re not all ballgown and glitter, right? I wish someone could give a rundown of these awards according to formality and glitter content required.

  • random_poster

IN. What does it for me is I LOVE LOVE LOVE when she wears her hair like that. Her features are so striking it takes the soft hair to balance it out. It also coordinates to the soft vibe of the dress, and the big belt doesn’t really take away from that. This is expertly styled.

  • LeelaST

Female monk, or, a woman in Robins’ Merry Band. The belt by itself is to die.

  • Carly Clement

IN!!! I thought wow when I saw it!! The colour is stunning and her hair and make up is flawless and the belt and clutch add edge. LOVE IT!!!

  • Pterodactyl111

IN, but probably only because it’s Cate Blanchett. On a lesser mortal it probably wouldn’t work as well.

  • megalomanic

IN. I let out a little sigh of happiness as soon as I saw the thumbnail. The lip colour with that dress is just sensational. And that is one fierce-ass belt!

  • KT

    In — pure effortless chic.

  • Tanya Wade

    IN. That color! That Belt!

  • Aurumgirl

It actually is a big, oversized t shirt with a big oversized belt. And sandals. No.

  • gracedarling

IN, and also please tell me that’s an off-the-shelf lip colour?!

  • granite5

    I’m obsessed with it.

  • LaSylphide

    In, totally in.

  • Meri

In, for the color if nothing else.

  • somebody blonde

OUT. I’m sorry, you guys are blinded by your love of Blanchett. It’s a chic look for the street, but it’s definitely too casual for the red carpet.

  • Monabel

In. Can’t see in detail, but I bet that is a very good fabric, that drapes and catches the light well. Not T shirt material.

  • SRQkitten

IN. On the rest of us mere mortals, it would be out.

  • quiltrx

IN. It’s a little not-shapely but I’m fine with it. And mere mortals cannot wear that lipstick she is rocking!

  • Bethany Roullett

    Out. It’s a tshirt. :/

  • SophieCollier

    IIIINNNNN!!!! She looks gorgeous!

  • elzatelzabelz

OUT- yawn, and it doesn’t fit.

  • Lisa_Co

I love her but this is too blah for me, I expect more. Out.

  • Alison – NYC Recessionista

This is a total IN. All hail Queen Cate!

  • http://logical-insnaity.com/ elizonthelam

In but i wish the proportions above the belt were less full.

  • prettybigkitty

In. How could she be out looking as beautiful as she does?

  • katiessh

IN. because she’s awesome, and also i’m pretty sure the dress has pockets, which i love

  • AnnPopovic

I think it was FINE until you showed the closeup! The stitching around the neck looks like serging that’s come undone. But she gets an ‘in’ ’cause until I saw that I wanted it…and I might’ve STILL if I didn’t have a personal grudge against the stitching on the outside thing.

  • Rachel Lee

IN. She looks like she rolled out of bed today and said, screw it, I’m going to be comfortable; enough of those big poofy gowns. And then managed to achieve a level of chicness that only Our Lady Galadriel can. Yes, it isn’t show-stopping, and it may be too casual for the red carpet. But you just can’t fault a lady for wanting to be a bit laid-back for once in this awards season!

  • JimiG

I love it. The definition of casual elegance.

  • anneland

OUT. I do think it looks like a tee shirt.

  • Jacob Bowen

This event seems to be a not so fussy event, so this is ALMOST perfect, minus that STUPID collar stitching like it’s a t-shirt. IN still because that color is beautiful.

  • mickiemonkey

Way IN. Timeless and stunning. Lipstick works against all reason.

  • lesmaha

    Out. Too casual.

  • PeaceBang

Not out, but not really RC carpet worthy. Still IN! Because it’s beautiful even if not up to the occasion.

  • Suse

I would love her in a Hefty bag! I don’t like the shoe, though, and she needs some fab jewels. What color is this dress?

  • sunflower

    IN IN IN!!

  • bailey

    IN lanvin is never out

  • Jarethee

    IN! She’s perfect.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i do love the color, and the belt is so chic, but the t-shirt style top and that horrible orange lipstick just kills it for me. sorry, cate, but out.

  • Lilyana_F

    Very In. So very chic.

  • DeTrop

I’m not fond of this. Too casual and loose fitting. A little bling might help. What a let down.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

    IN.

  • ankali

    Out. Belted sack, awful lipstick.

  • E. D.

OUT due to the T-shirt neckline and seaming.

  • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

    IN. That’s a fierce belt.

  • Reality TV Casting

i know everyone is going to out-vote me but such an OUT the color is great btu the lip is too bright and clash-y and the belt is pure renaissance wench, sorry cate, not your best

  • Warmheartedgirl_Seattle

    In.

  • AnnaleighBelle

I really seriously want a floor-length tee shirt now. That seems awesome.

  • http://bowtiesare.blogspot.com Meg Smitherman

    IN SO IN

  • allcapsERINN

It’s an AWESOME time to be a belt over here! In or out, I have no clue. All I see are lips and a big fabulous belt.

  • Lianne S

    in! I love it!

  • Empty

In with a whiff cedar — Love it

  • Lara Morris Starr

    J’adore! The
Red Carpet at the Critics Choice didn’t know what it wanted to be –
there were ladies in day dresses, evening dresses, cocktail dresses –
The Great Cate did a great job of choosing a dress straddled those lines. She is perfection and looks comfortable without being casual.

  • Gatto Nero

This is fantastic — in the same league as the sack-like but freakishly elegant Lanvin that Tilda wore (and got such grief for) when she won her Oscar.
And the color — and with her makeup/lip — is making my heart go pitter-pat.

  • lrhoff

    In, in, and more in!!!!!

  • Slanted & Enchanted

    IN.

  • MandyM

In! I love it! She could have added a dazzling necklace to make this more RC but this is much too lovely to warrant an out just for being casual.

  • veleri

    absolutely IN!

  • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

This is what Julia Roberts was going for.

  • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

Adore. If i had her body and a reason to be on a red carpet — I’d be wearing this.

  • Judih1

good color but boring dress and accessories – including the belt. OUT

  • http://www.getbrilliantfx.com/ BrilliantFx Skin Products

perfect – she can do no wrong.

  • Sara McDarby

In!!!!! Gorgeous!!! Love how simple it is!
