GTNYD: Sandra Bullock in Prabal Gurung at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards

Posted on January 13, 2014

Girl, no.

Sandra Bullock attends the 2014 Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California in a Prabal Gurung dress paired with Jimmy Choo shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall 2014 Collection

We recoiled at the sight of this but the longer we looked at it, the more we liked the idea of it on someone like, say Jennifer Lawrence. Something about the colors, proportions and overall feel of the dress just make it look wrong and awkward on Sandy. It’s not her style. And the ponytail, which is her style, looks awful with it.

Girl, That’s Not Your Dress. Set it free on the wind, where it can eventually land on the back of someone like J Law or Anne Hathaway; who’ll set it off the way the universe intended. Let’s get you in a glittery sheath, pronto.

    • Sobaika

      Sad pinata dress.

      • CeeRich

        Yes. Fiesta gone wrong.

        • Kent Roby

Instead of Fiestaware, it’s Fiesta-don’t-wear here.

          • Kathy Monkman

            heehee

        • tallgirl1204

Ah– but true fiestaware colors might have done the trick. These are Easter Egg colors. How about Uranium red (yes, it really was radioactive– we got a geiger counter and checked a piece a couple of years ago)?

      • Rhonda Shore

it’s like the color scheme for a baby’s room. just hideous.

      • Trent

It’s Kaley Cuoco’s dress (NOT a compliment). And it really needs that belt.

    • lunchcoma

Really? I kind of liked it when I saw it on screen. Granted, I can see how Anne Hathaway would really sing in it, but I didn’t think it was so very off for Sandra. She’s done the girly thing successfully before.

      • Violina23

Yeah, I agree it’s probably someone else’s dress, but Sandra borrowed it and I think it looked pretty nice on her! Or maybe it’s just palette cleansing after Lena Dunham…

        • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Oddly enough, Lena might could wear this. Emphasis on the might tho.

      • Lily

I think it’s really important to discuss how good it looked on-stage during the show. This is the 2nd year in a row that she has gone for a dress that is questionable on the red carpet but looks absolutely stunning on-stage. I think she knows exactly what she’s doing.

    • Spreecord

      Her makeup is wonderful.

      …That’s all I’ve got.

      • http://heartprintandstyle.com/ Vivi N

        Exactly! Love the lipstick.

        • KateM

Was going to say the same! Her face looks flawless and I have to know what the lip is.

          • PeaceBang

Please find out because I’m likewise obsessed with the lips.

            • akprincess72

              Me too!!!

      • Spicytomato1

Agree. I like her hair, too, and to me both of those made up for the dress. She was glowing.

      • SugarSnap108

        Her face is divine.

    • Introspective

suited for a younger girl. and a wrinkly mess. so nope.

      • Mary229

Why do you think this is for someone younger? I’m not sure I agree with that. It may not be Sandy’s dress but I don’t think it’s super young per se.

        • Introspective

saw the bow in the model pic and automatically thought twee. saw hallee steinfeld or someone along those lines looking cute in it.

then saw her without it and thought, this just doesnt work without the belt– makes her look blocky. so she’s missing the element to make the dress look best, which was the element that determined the age range of the dress for me. so circular reasoning indeed, but still that’s how I arrived at the conclusion…

        • sojourneryouth

I think it’s for a twentysomething flirting with sophistication, or maybe Marion Cotillard, who seems to be able to make whimsy work as a thirtysomething.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Yay! She left her hair straighteners at home!

    • Maluca

I liked it precisely cause I thought it was a bold choice for her. I hated it upon first sight, but the more I look at her in it, the more I like it. She went with the road less travelled. Which is more than what can be said about the Anistons’ and Roberts’ of the world.

      • Erica

I agree. The dress skews a bit young, but Sandy can pull it off, I think (as someone only a few years younger than her, I don’t think I could). I don’t love the dress, but it has some fun to it which I like.

      • Spicytomato1

True. I liked that it felt fresh, while Julia Roberts, whom I’m guessing is around the same age, looked positively matronly in comparison.

    • Judy_S

I actually loved this look for her. Ponytail and all. Maybe it’s just my age but it felt right to me–or maybe it’s just that she did look very beautiful.

    • MannahattaMamma

I hate belts, generally (being a waistless human, myself) but that dress needs that belt. The pink is lovely against Sandy-gal’s skin, and the overall dress is stunning, I think, but without that sharp horizontal line, it all gets kind of futzy and weird.

      • Introspective

i agree that a belt was needed in the middle, whether that twee one from the designer or another because the cut and color blocking widen her. and inexplicably so given how fit her figure is.

    • Annarosa

is it really THAT bad? I’m not saying that I love it completely or that it is a werq, but I don’t think it really is one of the worst outfits we’ve seen last night.

      • Mary229

For me it’s more that I just really wanted her to stand out in a good way last night bc I think she’s had an amazing year with both Gravity and The Heat. I wanted her to look incredible bc I love her.

      • Introspective

oh no. zoe saldana is fighting tooth and nail for that honor of worst outfit. but she had lots of competition.

this dress isnt so much bad as it is meh for me. because I agree with the uncles that it would really work, just not on sandy.

    • Mary229

She is just so pretty and I adore her ponytail. Dress is ugly.

    • SewingSiren

The neckline is extremely unflattering. Not crazy about the high low hem, or the color blocking either. Yep, pretty much hate it.

    • @Biting Panda

In 2013, I declared it would be the Year of the Peek-a-boob. (Truth, look it up) I can foresee that 2014 will be the Year of the Sternum.
      I am weeping already.

      • formerlyAnon

There’s been a pretty constant stream of warm up sternum-baring going on, so brace yourself. Weeping may be inadequate.

        • @Biting Panda

I know. It’s as if copious amounts of tit weren’t enough, we need to see bitchs’ bony breast plates.

And for the record, don’t get me wrong, I love women, the female form and breasts, in general, but I’m old enough to think most of the time they are coming off looking tacky, trashy and desperate.

          • marlie

And there’s a fine line between admiring the bodies that women have, however they choose to display them; and pushing the envelope farther and farther ‘just because.’ I don’t want to see gratuitous sideboob or almost-nakedness on the red carpet just because they CAN.

            • formerlyAnon

Yeah. One of the things that make me feel old is when the thought “Has everyone forgotten how sexy a little mystery & imagination can be?” tiptoes across my mind.

    • jonnyf8

I saw only the top initially and I loved the pink (which looked better on television) and then I saw more of the dress and I just didn’t get it — not for Sandy not for anyone.

      • Tatiana Luján

        I completely agree with you.

    • Evan

I was thinking Jennifer Lawrence too for some reason! I think because she wore these exact colors is some Dior ensemble last year lol

    • nannypoo

I agree that it’s just not the right dress for her. Her makeup is pretty, especially the lipstick.

      • gigi kennedy

yes that lipcolor looks stunning on her!

    • MW

JLaw was actually the first person I thought of when I saw this dress.

I do, however, like the ponytail.

    • MilaXX

I think it needs height. Give this to someone taller like Zoe Saldna. I think it also needs the belt.

    • MilaXX

I think it needs height. Give this to someone taller like Zoe Saldna. I think it also needs the belt.

      • marlie

This – or ANYTHING – would have looked better on Zoe than what she was actually wearing last night.

        • MilaXX

oh hells yeah! I worry that Zoe is losing her fashion mojo.

          • filmcricket

She never had any, IMO, but I know I’m in the minority on that one.

      • SugarSnap108

Yep. I like this on the model, with the belt and (presumably) some inches on Sandy.

    • Tatiana Luján

I don’t like the color scheme of this dress, but her face glows with that pink.

      • Lilah

I agree. Her face is really pretty.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Too much dress for you, Sandy.

    • Diego!

Was that dress just taken out of a washing machine? It’s so wrinkled!!! And Sandra hon’… you can afford a better hairdresser to do things way better than an “I just got up and tie a ponytail hair”. Honey, it was clearly NOT your night.

    • Angela_the_Librarian

Would have looked better with the belt and sans wrinkles. Not the best look, but certainly not the worst.

    • Chelsea

Love, love, love it….on the model.

      • Errick Loyola

Hear hear. That dress looks divine on the model. On Sandy? Not at all.

    • RussellH88

I love it on the model, but it just looks awkward on Sandra.

    • Courtenay P

It looks so expensive and chic in the model photo. On Sandy, not so much (and that’s not her fault). That fabric looks really cheap and could use a steaming.

    • Errick Loyola

Damn. Those creases make my eyes twitch.

    • decormaven

That dress cries for the white belt. Without it, the pink “v” looks chopped – and makes her waist look wide. She’s got the Globes jitters- fingers crossed for a more flattering choice for the Oscars.

    • marlie

I want to like this, and I sort of do, but Sandy could have done so, so, SO much better than this.

    • SophieCollier

I hate to say it needs the white belt, because white belts are anathema, but… It needs it and it needs to be on a very tall, very lanky younger girl. But I admit I will always hate angled hems, so I’m not sure I’d ever really like this dress.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Give it to Emma Roberts. Maybe she’ll look classy for once.

      • marlie

She actually looked pretty good last night. And I have to admit, I was surprised at that.

    • pookiesmom

Her face looks gorgeous, but the dress is sad.

    • Victoria Anzalone

This bummed me out so much.

    • halleygee

I actually like this, but she should have had it hemmed and went with the white belt and the shoes in the photo.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Her hair and make-up are lovely. And the dress would be fine, except for that blue stripe. If it had been black all the way down, it would have worked for Sandy.

    • Kent Roby

I would have expected this dress to work (or even werq) on her, but it really doesn’t. It’s such an odd dress; it could look either amazing (like on the model or the other celebs suggested) or, dare I say, “Home Economics sewing project” like it does here on Sandy.

    • Erica Woods Tucker

      It looks like a kite.

    • boweryboy

Every thing about this from tip to toe is a hot mess. What was she thinking?

    • webslice33

but that face! i’ve never seen her more beautiful…her features look so soft…the dress is not that bad..

    • ThaliaMenninger

This one was a surprise because it’s so different from what she usually wears and so very wrong. Oh, Sandy. You’re stunning. Who put this on you and why?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips SC TSu

Well, you said she needs to wear more color…

    • DaringMiss

I love the shape on her. If you got rid of that dreadful Barbie pink at the top and either went all black or matched the contrast band at the bottom, I think it would be better.

But if you went all black and made the contrast band a deep vibrant purple — that would have been AMAZING on her!

    • madge

huh. i actually really liked this one on her, and appreciated the small amount of risk taking.

    • jilly_d

I’ll defend this. Is it a little young? Yeah, but not ridiculously so. Is it a little wrinkled? Yeah, but I’ve seen worse. The colors look pretty on her, her head looks FANTASTIC, and it’s different than what everybody else was wearing. Don’t listen to these BKs, Sandy.

    • Daisy Walker

Love everything from the neck up. And would love to see the rest on JLaw.

    • lifeisastory

I’m ok with the pink OR the blue. Not both. Other than that, it doesn’t bother me. Her shoes are better than the model’s.

    • tallgirl1204

I think that different colors and a slight styling tweak would have turned the tide. The dress is a beautiful shape. More jewel tones instead of Easter egg colors would have had WERQ potential. And even a low chignon (read: comfortable) in back would have elevated the styling.

    • Allie Carter

On the other hand her head is incredible. That is such good make up.

    • LeelaST

It does seem designed for a much younger woman. When I first saw the pink bodice last night I had visions of the pink Paltrow Oscar prom gown. At least this wasn’t that bad.

    • Imasewsure

I don’t think it would work on anyone. Really didn’t like this one at all

    • Sam Smith

Needs the belt or a belt. Really like the vibe of this dress, interesting and different. I think with the belt and a more formal hair do this would be an In.

    • rkdgal

Her head looked so good, but she just didn’t seem to be feeling good about the dress, either. In every shot I saw of her before and during the telecast she looked slightly peeved. Perhaps she should have accessorized with Clooney; surely that would’ve made her feel better.

    • MsAfroCAN

I think I would have loved it if someone steamed it when she got out of her vehicle.

    • MsAfroCAN

The styling on the model is great. The belt and shoes tie it together.

    • ChristopherM

She looks like she belongs on top of a quincenera cake. Fail.

    • 3Beaz

awww i loved this on screen, I thought she looked sharp and fresh on stage. The picture really doesn’t do it justice compared to how it appeared on screen :(

    • Jennifer L.

Dress is a fail, but that soft rose lipstick is a major win.

    • VicD

I loved this; glad to see from the comments that I am not entirely alone in that sentiment.

    • Danielle

It looks so wrinkled, which is my major fault with it.

    • MzzPants

Well, at least she switched up the part in her hair.

    • formerlyAnon

Hair and makeup are good on her, the dress so-so. Commendations on the fit, though. I didn’t see it in motion, I suspect that it might have looked much better or worse as she moved.

    • Erica_Vuitton

This is just U.G.L.Y and that facial expression says she knows it. Hair and make up are beautiful though.

    • French_Swede

It reminds me of a funky bridesmaid’s dress.

    • susan6

That’s no one’s dress (not even the model’s). It’s chip in a chip way. It looks like a handmade prom dress.
Everything above the neck looks awesome, though.

    • Kate

Oh my god it’s satin make your assistant carry around a damn steamer have you never been in a wedding GAH

    • Janet B

      Love from the waist up.

    • Kerri

I think if maybe the bottom was solid black and didn’t have the strip of blue, it could work better for Sandy. That said, I do still like it quite a bit and was nowhere near one of the worst looks of the night.

      • Jaeda Laurez

That’s what I thought- I really like the shape of the dress, but the blue and pink are doing a bit too much.

    • Sally Spannagle

The pink does look nice on her, though.

    • MoHub

This could have been one of the parachute dresses from the last season of Project Runway.

      • demidaemon

I actually think it might have been. It does look oddly familiar.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Sandy, what the hell? Don’t put me in a position where I can’t defend you, because I love you, girl!

    • jw_ny

That satin fabric is just a mess, and the pink and blue!?…you’d think she was one of the pregnant celeb attendees. Her hair and makeup are really pretty tho.

    • ailujailuj

I immediately liked this dress… pretending that Sandie was not in it. Although, regardless of who was wearing it – it’s a wrinkled mess. So was Lupita’s but I was too scared to write that on her page – heh…

      • conniemd

LOL I did write about Lupita’s wrinkles. :)

        • ailujailuj

          you’re so brave. ;)

    • BKagainwiththesweatpants

At least it’s not as bad as the woman’s dress (to her left) in the last shot. Honey, we can see your foundation garments. Put them away. I’d almost rather look at that atrocity on Lena Dunham, who has far surpassed Zooey on my irrational hate list.

    • BitterOldQueen

The only time this dress looked good was when Sandra was sitting down at a table, with lots of glasses, bottles, and a breadbasket in front of her. It didn’t look good on the red carpet, it didn’t look good on stage, and it probably looked pretty terrible in the ladies’ room too. Bad, bad dress.

    • Aaminah Khan

Shame, because her hair and makeup are looking gorgeous.

    • nycfan

First time I’ve ever disagreed with a GTNYD call. Not awesome, needs a belt, needs pressed better, not entirely flattering bust line, so not a WERQ or anything, but surprised about the extent of negative reaction.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Needs a belt and a lot less sternum. But mostly, it needs someone else to wear it.

    • murt

      I like it actually.

    • Trickytrisha

Well, dang… I liked this dress. A little too bare up top, but the rest is fine. Her face and hair are flawless, IMO.

    • amanda lynn

What to wear to that black-tie Baby Shower that you’re invited to.

    • bouionice

So glad that you didn’t like this – so many of the other commentators did. To me she looks like she’s ready to film a scene from I Love Lucy where Lucy wants to be in Ricky’s act at the Tropicana!

    • Lily-Rygh

I don’t mind the idea of this dress, but the fabric renders it really cheap IMHO.

    • largishbearishAtlish

agreed, it’s too ‘pretty/shiny’ for her. I can def see it on someone else, just not her, maybe in a less shiny fabric? and with out the blue (with pink underlining at the bottom)? Maybe on Ms Reese…but not Sandra. She looks good but not “good”.

    • LiliLynch

I originally saw only her top half and thought she looked beautiful…her face looks absolutely gorgeous here! But then I saw the whole dress and kind of scratched my head. So many mullet hems last night, are they really a thing now?

    • Jacob Bowen

From the waist up…ehhh okay, but the bottom ESPECIALLY with the peek-a-boo pink. NO. Come on Sandy. You can do SO much better.

    • PastryGoddess

Would this dress have worked if it was rendered in different fabrics with more saturated colors?

    • EEKstl

It’s a really really interesting dress, and from the hemline (or should I say the baby blue) upwards I actually think it works for her. But the blue and the uneven hem just reads too “twee.” Perhaps as others have said if the contrasting colors were more jewel-toned than pastel it would have been different; but as it is, I agree. Jennifer Lawrence should have worn it instead of that white blah of a Dior.

    • River

It’s the waist placement. It’s in the wrong spot for her.

    • shaziz

I wished she’d have taken a styling cue from how it was presented on the runway with the belt and spectator pumps- much more fun and carefree than the open toed bride’s maid shoes she wore… I think if her attitude was lighter and matched the accessories and some more “fun” make up she could have rocked this.

    • quiltrx

I actually wasn’t minding the bodice (though I don’t care for sternum-baring wide necklines like this very much)…then it all went very not-Sandy south of the waist.
I’ll give her credit for trying to do something different, even if it really didn’t work out. And her face and hair look fantastic.

    • CeeQ

I have no words. So I’ll use my Hub’s: “She looks like one of those highlighter pens that has the pink on one end and the blue on the other.”
I’m thinking that wasn’t the point….oh dear. Her hair is nice though! And ditto make up.

    • ms_kat

Awkward. It’s like sportswear colors in a heavy and ugly fabric.

    • bertkeeter

One more strike and Prabal …your out!

    • guest2visits

That close-up of her is just gorgeous. The more you pan away and see the dress – all that satin just does not translate well. It’s a neat looking dress in theory, on the model where there is absolutely no wrinkle or imperfection, but the dress just does not look like that outside of the fantasy-page. In the reals; it looks like a kooky prom dress. Sandra could, should have a better gown than this one. Not awful at all, but after her last cool dresses I was expecting amazing.

    • akprincess72

Does anyone know that lipstick? I’m coveting it & could wear it happily!!

    • Raymond Dnomyar

Looks like Prabal Gurung was on major sabotage duty this evening.

    • lillyvonschtupp

You want Jude Law to wear this dress?

    • Lynzee Michelle Lamb

Dress looks heavy. I really like her make-up though.

    • Kathy Monkman

I love the style of this dress but not the color blocking…it kind of distracts from the beautiful lines in it.

    • Katherine Leay

I dont like the dress, at all, the fabric looks cheap, i hate the colors, Sandra burn that dress, don´t send it to anyone please

    • GillianHolroyd

The squared-off bottom edge of the pink border meeting the center panel of the skirt is making her waist look wider. From the back, the skirt is also unflattering. This, more than the choice of colors makes me think the designer’s skills are lacking.
