GTNYD: Kiernan Shipka at the Tory Burch Rodeo Drive Flagship Opening

Posted on January 16, 2014

Sweetie, we love you in a way only imaginary gay uncles can, but we’re afraid we can’t sign off on this one.

Kiernan Shipka attends the Tory Burch Rodeo Drive Flagship Opening in Beverly Hills, California in a Tory Burch top and matching floral print pants.

Tory Burch Spring 2014 Collection

Dress like a teenager. You’ll be happy you did when outfits like this become the only style options available to you and you find yourself struggling mightily to not make it look dowdy. There’s plenty of time for the Carol Brady (ask your grandparents who that was) getups much later on.

Tell you what: you can keep the top, but you have to pair it with skinny dark pants and some sort of insane shoe. But really, why bother, hon? Go out and snag the outfits designed with you in mind. This is not one of them. Girl, That’s Not Your Dress Look. Pack it up and send it off to Sarah Paulson or Marisa Tomei.

Also, your mani-pedi bores and disappoints. We expect to see obnoxious colors and possibly even glitter from you next time, young lady.

  • 4″ longer and you can wear it as a dress, sweetie. Which would have the added benefit of not cutting off the tops of the flowers in the waistband, which strikes me as a really stupid usage of beautiful fabric. Give the shoes back to your mum – just because she was wearing them the day you were born doesn’t make them pretty.

    • Tatiana Luján

Her mom was wearing them when she wanted to be Baby Spice.

    • Spreecord

Yes. Turn this into a dress and wear it with your Sally Draper gogo boots.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I badly want that to be a dress. The fabric is gorgeous and I love the shape of the top. Another few inches would have made it sing. The shoes are hiddy.

    • Kent Roby

I’d also love to see her wear this as a dress, with blue tights (I recently re-watched “Heathers” twice, and I still love Wynona’s outfits). It would be so very!

  • Ginger

Too mature, yes, but I’m always thankful when a young starlet doesn’t dress like a harlot. See what I did there? Tee Hee Hee

    • NYCGlamourpuss

      You said it, and I can’t forget it… 😉

    • Evan

Yes, classy, but too mature. Idk if anyone’s mentioned this, but I like how she matches the background though!

  • Sobaika

    Twee geriatric.

    • Trent

Twee, yes, but it looks super-young to me, like something a mom might put her 6-year-old in to visit Grandma. I can’t believe baby-fashion-diva Kiernan actually made a (small) style misstep…

  • Tatiana Luján

I hate Pinterest nails, so I like her manicure.
I liked her hair better when it was darker.

    • Ginger

I DESPISE Pinterest nails. They just look stupid to me. Personal opinion…

    • MoHub

I actually found the clean mani-pedi refreshing.

      • Rhonda Shore

YES! Absolutely! I don’t hate the outfit either, i think she makes it look cute.

        • Tom Shea

Ageed. Everybody’s wee-weeing about how it makes her look so old. Yeah. You wish.

    • Erica_Vuitton

Why does everyone call funky nail designs “Pintrest Nails”? Nail art has been happening LONG before Pintrest even existed.

      • Tatiana Luján

In my country, it was considered very tacky by most people until Pinterest got popular.

      • marlie

        Thank you.

      • Did white girls do it before pinterest though?

        • Erica_Vuitton

I had a neon Lisa Frank nail kit in the early 90’s. I’m white, so I’d say yes. But I am also a little ghetto so…

  • deelup

It looks like she already retired to Boca.

    • Wendi126

My immediate reaction was 1970 Palm beach. Add a headband pushing back a That Girl flip, a bangle or two and hoop earrings. She still looks adorable. And I like the plain mani/pedi

  • SewingSiren

The outfit is insipid. But she looks cute as hell.

    • Lorelei_D

Which is why I actually like her in this! She makes the look young. Also, agree with everyone that I hate pinterest nails. ew.

  • Jessica Freeman

I definitely love the top, but the pants are a huge no, for basically anyone.

  • @Biting Panda

Is she old enough for sunset cocktails on the lido deck?

  • Its a perfect outfit if one is 85 and lives in Boca.

  • MilaXX

I would be okay with this if she was wearing cute flats. Those shoes are too grown for her. Also lose the bag for something with a bit of whimsy.

  • tallgirl1204

I love love love this outfit. And would totally wear it. Which is probably the problem because I’m 55 years old. However, I do like the Megan Draper-ness of this outfit very much. I also like the pants very much. I think that the flowers are cut off because they shortened the top from the waist when they tailored it to fit tiny little Kiernan, which I guess is another reason that it’s not her outfit. But boy oh boy, it’s someone else’s outfit, and in another life it would be mine.

    • The tops of the flowers are cut off on the model’s version, too.

  • CLoverleaf

Well. I actually really like it…… *hides*

    • Nothing wrong with that. It’s a perfectly lovely outfit for someone 20 to 40 years older than her.

    • Valdri8

As I posted, I do too. She is back shooting the show, and I think that this is her quirky way of having some fun with that. I would detest this on anyone wearing it as a serious outfit. Kiernan is way too hip for that.

    • I like it too. She has a precociousness about her that I think translates well to outfits that are grown-up but not overtly sexy. Personally, I’d much rather she was doing stuff like this than going in a super-youthful, twee direction. Plenty of young stars are doing that, and it’s boring.

Plus, she matches the backdrop! Extra points!

    • Lily-Rygh

I do, too! In fact, when I saw this on another site (::hiding my face in shame::), I just assumed our gay uncles would be bestowing yet another WERQ on our favorite girl! I think it works on her because she makes it look young and fun. Basically, it works for her youth, and it would work for her geriatric equivalent, but I don’t think it would work for many women in between.

      • CLoverleaf

        Well stated!

  • MoHub

I think I had that outfit in 1969.

    • tallgirl1204

that’s kinda what draws me to it– it’s a really cool Mad Men reference. I wonder what her Sally clothes will be this year– and will we see Megan in an outfit like this?

  • Erica_Vuitton

WAY too mature for a 14 yr old unless its an Easter outfit for church.

  • mjude

how old is this little girl? i like the look but just not on someone her age.

  • Betsy

Thank god the bushes are not awkwardly placed.

  • In_Stitches

The pants make the look read matching pajamas for the tropics; she’s young so she can pull it off, but I’d be trashing Marissa or Sarah if they trotted out in this thing.

  • I agree skinny pants in a dark color were the way to go with this, but that top is dynamite! Hair and make-up adorable and fresh.

  • Tara

Oh no, I love this look. I think if she’d gone with a shoe similar to the model’s, it would have saved the look from Golden Girls territory. The shoes she’s wearing look like orthopedic sandals purchased off a rack at a drug store in Pomano Beach. At least, from afar.

  • teensmom99

While I totally agree, I’m going to out on a limb and say there is always something a little Lily Pulitzer about the way she dresses so this was an obvious next [mis]step. The advice on gawdy nails is well taken and I think she needs that advice in general. She needs a little teenage experimentation and tackiness (but as the uncles so kindly point out, not Burch’s Pulitzer rip off kind of tackiness which is strictly for the middle aged and the totally wrong kind of tacky). And the uncles didn’t even mention how seasonally inappropriate this is, unless she’s on winter break in Belize.

    • I think the seasonal inappropriateness is inevitable – it’s a Tory Burch store opening so everyone has to wear current-season clothes, and we’re in the spring fashion retail season now.

      • demidaemon

I had the exact same though and wondered if there was anything appropriate for her in the current line/collection to wear.

  • Judy_J

Call me an old fogey, but I think it is great that she’s bucking the trends and dressing so tastefully. It’s a breath of fresh air, at least to my way of thinking. I think she looks adorable. Now you kids get offa my lawn!

    • alyce1213

Okay, you’re an old fogey. And so am I, proudly. I love this look.

  • Mothra

I kind of think it is adorable on her in an ironic way. Her smirk does that outfit justice. But to pull it off she needs something different with her hair. Something with alot of hairspray.

  • I LOVE IT! It’s totally adorable.

    • Denise Alden

Me, too! It has a Betty Draper circa 1976 vibe to it, too.

  • Anna_Cecilia

Love the top on its own, hate the pants. This really should be packed up and sent to Janie Bryant to use as a costume for Betty, I could see her wearing this as a hostess outfit.

    • decormaven

So, so wish I had held on to my mom’s set of ceramic barware festooned with pineapples – perfect for the occasion.

      • Anna_Cecilia

Perfect! I haven’t watched the show since Season 3 but I could see Betty drinking a Tom Collins out of something like that while dressed in this outfit.

  • kayleymaybe

She actually looks a lot like a young Tory Burch.

  • TigerLaverada

Yes, to me the problem is the matching pants. Pair that top with dark skinny jeans and it would create a completely different (and IMO unusual and fresh) look. And god, ditch those shoes. Their orthopedic vibe only adds to the Sun City-ness of this outfit.

  • hmariec19

I saw this on Suri’s Burn Book, and I was like “Ohhhhh HONEY. No.”

    • Jacob Bowen

Suri’s Burn Book is THE BEST (after TLo of course)!

  • sweetlilvoice

At first I thought the look was very cute and then I remember how young she is! She can do better, but on the bright side she doesn’t look like a prostitute like some of her peers do. I’d love if she had Carol Brady’s mullet! That was a work of art!

  • carnush

The top would be amazing with jeans and Converse.

  • Kathy

She makes it look youthful. And she gets points for matching the background.

  • Kate

My brain, as I scrolled: “Well, what’s wrong with…(hemline)…ooh, but wait, cute (knees), Ohh, she’s got pants under…(calves)…OHHH no! Not Marcia Brady!!” I’m a total sucker for embroidery, but this definitely veers squarely into Brady territory. I can see where she was going with the neutral shoe, but yeah, a little too Easy Spirit for someone who isn’t allowed to drink legally yet. Notice the model is wearing the pants ankle-length, which would have been a much better choice here – realizing that hemming an embroidered pant is ridiculous at best. Better still – as someone said below, style the top with something different or turn it into a mini dress of some sort…but this looks like she raided grandma’s closet for Vintage Day during spirit week at school.

  • SugarSnap108

This getup would be great at the retirement community luncheon. But she’s still so darn cute.

  • kipper

How FUN a Carol Brady themed store opening !! Kids today have all the fun!

  • Verascity

That would have been great as a dress for her, too.

  • Valdri8

I think it is a s cheeky as hell, and I love it!

  • A Shiny O’Connor

Someone on Twitter said that she looks like a teen Tory Burch. The likeness is uncanny when she’s literally dolled up in the brand.

  • Danielle

But from the neck up, GIRL, That Is Definitely Your Hair And Makeup.

  • ojosazules

Considering her work environment, and her very good style instincts, it seems like it’s going to be hard for her to be anything but pretty sophisticated in her style choices. Interesting problem. Sophisticated doesn’t equal old, certainly, but I think she’s already skipped the glitter stage.

  • TLJezebel

    I think she looks adorable.

  • Diego!

WTF is that outfit? Besides she is wearing some kind of make up which makes her look like 20 years older. Girl, fire all your staff. NOW!

  • crash1212

Only thing I don’t like about this look is the shoes. I never expect wild colors or glitter or obnoxious manicures from Miss Kiernan.

    • funkycamper

If she reads TLO, hope she ignores their advice about doing wildier or glittier mani-pedis. It’s refreshing to see a young girl with class and sophistication so I hope Ms. Shipka doesn’t cheapen herself like that.

  • Sam Smith

She is adorable and I loved the look from the waist up.

  • Janet B

Matching top and pants is for the very young or very old. As pretty as the fabric is, I don’t think it’s right for a teenager.

Funny how everyone thinks Boca Raton for rich old ladies. Is that where you retire after a long life in Palm Beach?

  • boweryboy

I dunno. The entire look is very juvenile and twee to me so I think she’s actually pulling it off.

I hate the dowdy shoes, but I do agree pairing the top with some black skinny pants and some flats or a kitten heel (I’m a sucker for a kitten heel) would be a vast improvement.

  • Shawn EH

You’re basically saying she’s being way TOO tasteful, aren’t you? What a great idea for ballerina Sarah Paulson! Instant chic with a Carol Brady wink.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

See, I think this is super cute – but then again, I’m 50 so yeah….

  • asherlev1

BUT I LOVE THIS! (Minus the shoes, but I give her a pass on that because I will forever and always be forgiving of her little slip ups)

  • Sartorial_She

I agree with the Uncles’ comments regarding the outfit. I will add, however, that I like her hair and I think her makeup is beautifully subtle and age-appropriate. She’s gorgeous! I admire her poise.

  • I love the ensemble, but it is a skosh too mature for her. It would have youthed it up a bit not to have the matching pieces and to have a cuter bag.

  • MaggieMae

LOVE that outfit, but man oh man, I see the point about it being too mature. Actually, I remember doing the same thing in my late teens. I wanted to dress more like a grown-up, and I often overshot the mark into the dressing-like-your-mom territory.

  • KinoEye

    Vero Beach retiree.

  • NCHresident

Did they get this at Talbots?

  • Cheryl

I completely get the Uncle’s point, but dammit, she looks so darn cute, that I like it. And she’s not doing the little girl transformed to over sexualized trashy look, that we’ve seen again and again.

  • Imasewsure

I wish she would pack this off to Marisa Tomei… but she’d just f*&k it up with some wacky yoga hair anyway so why bother….

  • bellafigura1

All true, girl, this is not your pants set, nor are those your shoes or your toes.

  • MannahattaMamma

I kind of love it & it needs to be worn by a sylph because a more – ahem– mature body (say, mine) would look like an actual lawn with weeds in that top. And to further demonstrate my age, I *like* those shoes. They’re silver mirrory platforms on the sides, aren’t they? So fun. And the whole thing is SO palm beach that it screams out for wicker furniture & frothy drinks.

  • Clearly, she is in the running to play young Tory Burch in the Lifetime Biopic. That outfit is kinda cute, and she’s adorable (awesome hair and makeup). I just think this particular outfit needs to be worn by an equally adorable 6 year old or a 66 year old. It just seems off for anyone in between.

    • LadyLuck777

Heh. I was just thinking Doris Day.

  • webslice33

huh? she looks so cute and really really put together…she’s not showing her butt and cleavage…this is perfect!

  • d4divine

That’s probably the best she could do in the Main Line white lady store aka Tory Burch.

  • Aurumgirl

Who can actually (want to) wear Tory Burch? It is all Geriatric Ladies Who Lunch, all the time. This so reminds me of my mother in Florida for the winter, happily spraying on the Shalimar before meeting the ladies next door. Right down to the sandals.

  • Kent Roby

If she’s trying to match the background, she nailed it.

  • marlie

This had a bit of JAN Brady to me, not her mother. It’s cute, if not a bit costume-y, in terms of “This is what Sally Draper will be wearing in a couple of years.”

  • jen

Oh, I don’t know, I kind of love it. But then I’m partial to things that look like fancy pajamas.

  • Loola234

    Scrolldown fug…

  • msdamselfly

Like the outfit but not the hair

  • jspark

But she matches the background perfectly! Did she get the memo before hand? Green peonies in ming vases.

  • frannyprof

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Tory Burch=Geriatric Couture.

  • Jeez, she’s not 60! Swap the pants for a saturated mini that barely peeks out from under the top and some color in the shoes I say!

  • Jean Beaton Leavitt

Miss Kiernan obviously doesn’t have gay uncles.

  • Maybe it’s because I’ve chosen a child as a style icon, but I’ve gotta disagree. I love it, it’s unexpected, and she looks incredible. The fit in particular is killing me.

  • Joanna

I think I would like this better if the pant were more of a capri. She still looks cute, though!

  • bluefish

Nah … Super cute. Love it on her and don’t get the aging thing.

  • PowerfulBusiness

She’s so fresh and adorable the even if it does look like something Mrs. Brady would have worn I can’t help but feel Miss Shipka makes it work.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I think she is adorable in this. Yes, I can understand TLo’s opining that the top would look more chic paired with a dark pant, but I really can’t fault her for this. It doesn’t look too old for her in my book

  • fursa_saida

The sight of flowers on pant legs is taking me back to 1998 when all jeans had to have embroidered flowers and shit around the bottom. I remember my first pair like that. I was so proud.

(Yes, I know much of that period of style was recycling the 60s, but I can’t be taken back there.)

    • LaSylphide

Ah, but I can go back to the 60s, and that was the first thing i thought of, too.

  • Qitkat

Totes agree. Totes adorbs, for Rose Nylund!
JEJ, get out of my head!

    • demidaemon

It definitely has a Golden Girls aesthetic about it, no?

  • ThaliaMenninger

She’s already dressed for next season of Mad Men. I think I wore this (with a very similar platform sandal) in 1970.

  • formerlyAnon

I think it looks age appropriate. Because it reminds me of (an actually much more stylish version of) some of the “pantsuits” which were the ONLY acceptable way to wear trousers to my Catholic school with-a-changing-dress-code for about a year when they caved and changed the rule to “dress pants, no jeans.”

  • LaSylphide

Actually, i like it. True, it might be a tad elderly, but she ‘youths’ it up. Hate the shoes, though.

  • No way. I ADORE this on her! Gah! Perfection. Sorry. I will have to disagree.

  • Synnamin

LOVELOVELOVE this on her. You sure you guys didn’t find some leftover eggnog in the back of the fridge?

  • BobAKABuffy

Most others her age would just ditch the pants entirely and show their cooch. It’s a cute design though.

  • Pennymac

I disagree! Tori Burch is ladies who lunch for those of us at a certain “ahem” age. But on a young lady like Kiernan, it feels like a wink at us all. I love this!

  • quiltrx

It’s very Carol Brady as it is, but I think more of a capri/cigarette pant look would take it Doris Day. It’s really cute, and I don’t mind it (it matches the background, and I’m sure head-to-toe TB was required), but I’d rather she had kept the top and skipped the pants.

  • Wendy Todd

I kind of love it. But mostly I adore her hair. I’m sorry to disagree with you, uncles. As her imaginary black mama…I approve wholeheartedly!

  • CommentsByKatie

I think it would be a total slam dunk if the pants were white skinny pants. Not loving the embroidery on the pants, though I really like it on the peplum. Face and hair look great, although it’s a lot of make-up for someone so young.

  • Aww I love this unabashedly. But I have admittedly old-lady style sometimes.

  • p_capet

it’s ’70s kitsch and i love it. i think someone her age is exactly the sort of person who could pull this off. charming as hell.

  • guest2visits

Even though I know what you’re saying – it could be seen as too mature; except it’s just not coming off that way.
Kiernan looks just perfectly adorable in this, very young and playful on her, especially with the platforms. Cool little retro look.

  • Tanya Wade

“Carol Brady, The Puberty Years.” I love it this outfit, plus she’s standing in front of the perfect backdrop.

  • Tee

Gay uncles be trippin’. She looks adorable!

  • KayEmWhy

Sorry I had this similar look when I was a kid. my top had a peek-a-boo back. Brought back good memories on vacation in NOLA. See looks lovely.

  • Jen

I would actually love the top paired with a cute pair of crisp white shorts and some blue or green wedge sandals.

  • KT

Those pants are really bordering on Golden Girls. If that top was just a little longer and became a dress instead, this would be really cute. Definitely needs some more fun accessories though

  • Candigirl1968

I’m sad that she’s started doing the potty pose.

  • CatherineRhodes

I think she looks positively adorable. Love it.

  • alyce1213

    Love it, minus the shoes.

  • fooepi

Wish you would stop telling people to dress like a teenager. Teenage fashion is sad and I’m glad she mixes it up.

She looks cute and the fabric goes beautifully with her skin.
