Florence Welch at the Valentino Fashion Show

Posted on January 24, 2014

If you want to be a bitchy celebrity fashion blogger covering fashion shows, you have to resign yourself to the fact that, especially for the European shows, front-row celebs are going to be dressed by the designer and forced into outfits that are more about the brand and FAR less about the person wearing it.In other words, lots of odd style choices or ripped-from-the-runway looks that don’t necessarily work on real people.

Florence Welch attends the Valentino show as part of Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2014 in Paris, France.

Valentino Pre-Fall 2014 Collection

That coat is spectacular and suits her perfectly. Unfortunately, adding the Barbie-matching dress underneath it does nothing for th elook and the clutch looks ridiculous paired with it off the runway. The boots can stay.

Imagine if she’d worn skinny black pants with this? Killer. It almost wouldn’t matter what kind of top she wore. As it is, she looks way too much like a fashion doll. Some of these items should’ve been sold separately, if you know what we mean.

Butterflies are totally a thing right now, aren’t they?

    Butterflies? For spring? Groundbreaking.

    • Jeremiah Capacillo

Love the semi “Devil Wears Prada” reference ;)

    • Emily Smith

I read this in Miranda Priestly’s voice.

    • Danielle

By all means move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.

  • lexilexi

Yay to *these* butterflies… they look rich and glorious.
Agree on changing up the under-coat look.
Wish she had shooshed up her hair a bit.

    • Sarah

I agree that *these* butterflies are pretty, and I’m not hating the coat, but I have to say that if butterflies are “having a moment” then I am not on board with them as a motif. They make me think of garish wind chimes, grandma placemats, gift shop mouse pads, and tacky tattoos. IRL, sure – they’re lovely creatures. I just hate to see them merchandised.

      • Levedi

I’m with you. The 10 year old girl in me wants to run around covered in butterflies. The adult me is thinking “I don’t want to look like a grade schooler’s trapper keeper.”

      • anneland

Remember Effie’s butterfly dress in “Catching Fire”? It was cool. My teen daughter thought they should have had a special effect where the butterflies were flitting around the dress also. I’m recommending that for these designers also :)

  • Angela_the_Librarian

I want that jacket! Everything else is pretty blah.

  • marlie

The clutch is the only thing I’d get rid of. I LOVE the coat on her, and the outfit underneath is fine – under these circumstances. Otherwise, it’s too matchy and monochromatic. But really… that COAT.

  • MW

I love the look, mostly because gingers wear dark green like no one else and she’s taking full advantage.

    • Ginger

Yes we do…greens and vibrant purples are our best friends. Said the ginger Ginger.

  • SewingSiren

God how I love that coat! Is it embroidery mixed with appliqué? Fabulous! Great color for her too. I don’t care for the fussy bow at the neck, but the little clutch purse is a win/win, as is the ring.

  • MilaXX

Splitting the pieces up would also make them stand out more. In other words I’d appreciate the coat better if it didn’t have to fight the dress and the bag for attention.

  • Nancer

I love this. The coat is beautiful, and in a way, wearing all of the pieces together like this IS kind of breaking fashion rules! I say bring back coordinated matching outfits! As they say, everything old is new again…..

    • Vickiefantastico

I LOVE matchy-matchy! Of course, I do have a four-year-old daughter, so that does influence me, but I love seeing all of the matchiness out there. Honestly, the “pop of color” thing always looks weird to me.

      • conniemd

I grew up in the matchy-matchy era, so I love when things match. That’s what I was taught to do. It wasn’t until I came to this site that I realized matching your accessories wasn’t cool at all.

      • Nancer

I just think sometimes we get too caught up in fashion rules. Like the pop of color thing – sometimes it’s great, sometimes it’s just out of place. And matchy-matchy can be so much fun!

        • demidaemon

It depends on the attitude and intent in my opinion. Also, the rest of the outfit. I think, considering this was basically preselected for Florence that she is serving it in spades and looks awesome.

  • Sally Spannagle

That coat is beautiful. I think the shoes look cheap.

  • Coleen

That coat just doesn’t work with the dress. She must send it to me immediately.

  • Sarah

There are so many other things from Valentino that Flo should be wearing. And damn my eyes, but is there not the suggestion on the model pic of a split skirt there? NOooooo

    • Ginger

She’s wearing culottes (sp?)! I don’t care what new word they use for that type of garment…they will always be culottes to me. My missionary mother-in-law wears those. I suppose that makes her high fashion now?

      • Sarah

Oh, man, I was hoping I was wrong! And no, it does not. It makes the model more like your missionary MIL.

  • altalinda

Her make-up is nice. For once, she looks her age.

    • Poeta Paz

What make-up? It looks like she doesn’t have any.

  • gabbilevy

I hope she took that coat home. It’s perfect for her.

  • ewes_urn_aim

Take the coat off and she’s a German school marm.

  • Jessica Freeman

I want that coat so hard.

I’m not so sure that is a dress. It appears it is a skirt and blouse, which makes it even more school marm. Had she paired the skirt with some sort of colored top or vice versa, this could have been fun. I really dislike those boots.

  • NBG

Love this coat. It’s not even coat porn, it’s art.

The dress can be shipped off to Lancaster, PA for some fine Amish wife to enjoy.

  • Anna

Love the coat, hate that the entire runway look was copied. And it could be just the way she’s standing but despite her height, the length of the dress and jacket combined with the boots seems as if she’s standing in a bucket. An expensive, cognac leather Valentino bucket, but a bucket nonetheless.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

It’s the length, isn’t it? The hems on the model are hitting around mid-calf, and Flo’s are down around her ankles. The shorter length is far better, especially to see those cognac leather boots. Cognac…..it’s so cold here, I wish I could have some right now, but that kind of thing is frowned upon at work.

      • Anna

I know Florence is quite tall herself and she certainly has the stature and personality to pull off a longer length. But something about that hem ain’t right!

I hear you about the cognac though. Either that or some bourbon would set me right for the afternoon.

  • boweryboy

So, that’s actually a thing? Designers dictating what the front row celebrities get to wear to their shows? What happens if the celebrity doesn’t want to wear one of their designs? Are the uninvited? Or do they get placed in the nose bleed seats? What a weird concept.

    • SewingSiren

I think it’s a two way street. The designers are “lending” the clothes to the celebrities that are invited to the shows. Presumably they would lend things to the actresses that best represent their actual clients .In other words the designers get an additional row of models and the celebrity would be more than willing to go along for the ride (free publicity for themselves).

  • random_poster

The fabric looks so I-want-to-touch-it luxurious on all the pieces, and the coat is to die for gorgeous. The look is totally runway and that’s all.

  • mjude

I love & want the coat!

  • Fannie Wolston

I find it appropriate, habitat for the butterfly effect, let your patch of grass grow wild

  • ScarlettHarlot

Agreed, it’s just too much green. A nice cream colored or cerulean dress underneath would have worked nicely.

  • lobsterlen

I love it matchy and all. Florence can pull off all that green.
Not sure black skinny pants would work at all with that coat. Black and green? Maybe something in cream.

  • Diego!

This is a dress Mariah Carey should have worn, because she adores butterflies (???) and also, because she would have worn it with the right slutty stilettos she has us used to. Florence dear, this is too “Green Tea” for my taste. I can’t approve. I’m sorry.

  • KinoEye

Great colors on her, but yeah — the matchy dress is no good. Black skinny jeans FTW. Not crazy about the heel of the boot or the excess of flutterbies in her accessories. Also, is anyone else getting a Garden State vibe from the model’s photo?

  • LeelaST

The dress (or skirt & blouse?) just make the entire outfit dowdy. The boots are cute but…they match her hair.

  • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

The coat is splendid, and I want her boots.
Also, sans makeup she looks so young.

  • Darcy H

Also is it not a little weird her boots and hair are almost the same color? Or is it just me?

  • RussellH88

It’s a great coat, but the butterflies push it into Lisa Frank territory.

  • Jackie4g

I think the look is too matronly and I am in my sixties, so your point about putting clothes on whomever rather that on whom they suit is well taken. One doesn’t look to Mr. V for innovation, but does look for spectacular fabrics, in which case, he delivered. Poor Florence, it’s all a bit overwhelming on her.

  • acevedob

I will do anything to get a different version of the coat sans butterflies. I’m in love with the look and color.

  • another_laura

I adore that coat. And the boots. But yes, too much of that green, even on her. Love the skirt, would not have that blouse. Black would totally set off the coat and kill this.

  • stubbornthoughts

Don’t hate me, Uncles, but I actually dig the matchy-match dress with the coat. For some reason, on Flo, it just works for me.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I don’t mind the matching dress, but that is one ugly purse.

  • Ashleigh

yeah. Been sick of butterflies since Mariah Carey

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

In the realm of coat porn, this is NSFW.

  • Jeff Warhurst

I love it. I think she looks fantastic. She kind of is a doll… being a celebrity and all.

  • elemspbee

I disagree. the top actually ruins it with the damn fussy bow. get rid of that, get rid of the purse and maybe one less ring.

  • Trickytrisha

She’s adorable, but too bad the Valentino machine stuck her with such a literal version of that look. Not her at all, other than the coat.

  • Garcia Loca

I’m afraid that’s not a dress — but rather wide pants, similar to Julia’s crazy pink jumper at SAGs.

    • conniemd

You’re quite right it is a pants and blouse.. You can see it in the model pic as there is a tiny bit of the background wallpaper peeking through at the bottom of the wide pants.

  • Drunken Housewife

(singing voice) Green is not a creeeative color.

    • demidaemon

      Are you Michelle Visage?

  • queeniethebold

With that stupendous coat as the spectacular centerpiece, it would have been SO easy to style this differently and simply, and therefore much, much better. Can’t sign off on the look as it is.

    But the coat? The coat.

  • CatherineRhodes

    Coat porn.

  • sagecreek

That clutch, someone’s head should roll.

  • CatherineRhodes

Butterflies do seem to be a thing. Also noticing the sleeves of coats are hemmed shorter now. For awhile sleeves seemed to be reaching the knuckles.

  • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

I LOVVVVVEEE this coat. Agree that black slacks would make it really sexy and smart. HATE the color of those boots. Maybe I have a personal aversion to them because the color makes them look cheap – even though they’re probably beaucoup bucks.

  • Gatto Nero

You nailed it. The coat on its own has great impact but doesn’t belong with that sad pussy-bow dress, which might have worked on my fourth grade teacher.

  • formerlyAnon

Are those butterfly rings? Perfect with the coat, not with much else.

They really should be consulting you. I’m sure Valentino had something else that could have been put under that coat.

  • ballerinawithagun

Must go back and buy that butterfly brocade…

  • Monabel

    Gasp. That coat.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

What a shame they had to keep ladling it on – that coat for her is perfection and they should have stopped there.

  • Tracy_Flick

The dress and general matchiness, together with that color, is screaming Girl Scout Uniform. Picture it without the coat, with a sash covered in patches.

  • girliecue

The coat is beautiful, but being covered in the same color and heavy fabric makes her look like she’s been upholstered rather than dressed.

  • Ann VerWiebe

The skirt is very LL Bean – although at 40 times the cost.

  • decormaven

    Butterflies are [not] free.

  • littlemac8

MIMI!!!! Mariah must be in heaven!

  • littlemac8

When I was in high school “dyed to match” was all at the rage and that meant a wool straight skirt and a crew neck sweater in a perfectly matching color! Bliss!

  • fursa_saida

BUT WHY. WHY ARE BUTTERFLIES A THING, EVER. Except for Mimi; she can keep them, because I am forever entertained by her obsessive girlishness.

(Anyone is, of course, free to love butterfly-bearing clothing! Go right ahead. I just will never, ever understand it.)

  • quiltrx

But…but…there were SO many looks in the collection we just saw that were PERFECTLY FLO. I even suggested she should have been the finale model.
The coat is great, but the rest is so NOT her, and almost vintage schoolmarm-ish. Like, without the butterflies and in black and white, I see Deborah Kerr teaching children in this.

  • jjjoy

she could’ve sold it better if she brought some attitude. she looks like she just rolled out of bed and her blank, sort of smug expression is bringing this way down.
    .

  • LaSylphide

Actually, I love this, head to toe; just not on her. Color is great, but her stance seems to be saying, “They made me wear this.”

  • AnneElliot

After seeing the model shot in front of that background, all I see is wallpapercutouts pasted on a very nice coat. And I. HATE. PUSSY. BOWS. Ye Gods.

  • Dagney

I actually love this, but why is she wearing those Birkenstock looking boots? A sleek, clean lined boot would polish the look.
