Emmy Rossum in J. Mendel at ELLE’s Women in Television Celebration

Posted on January 24, 2014

Is this pretty? It this not pretty? Who cares? The important thing is that T Lo came in to NY to do some press for our book, and we’ve BEEN STUCK IN A TRAIN STATION FOR THREE HOURS BECAUSE JESUS HATES US.

OR ICE ON THE TRACKS. Something like that. We’re writing this perched on a goddamn bench.

Emmy Rossum attends ELLE’s Annual Women in Television Celebration in West Hollywood, California in a J. Mendel hand pleated v-neck dress with mousseline cord detail accessorized with Christian Louboutin shoes and Chopard jewelry.

You’re on your own, kittens. Rip her a new one. Or praise her to the heavens. We don’t care. Everything hurts and we’re cranky.

Oh God. She matched nude shoes to the nude in her dress.

      • TLJezebel

        And her nails.

      • BayTampaBay

and on top of that the shoes are a half size too big!

    • Adrianna Grężak

I like the dress, but the bodice/bust pieces look a little high. The shoes have too much toe cleavage for my taste

      • kimmeister

Yeah, the bust looks like a giant bow tie that just slipped a few inches.

      • jspark

Agreed, I think it’s stunning from the waist up. Perfectly fitted to her body. Where it looses me a little is the skirt. Aside from that though I like it for her.

    • Renee

The chandelier earrings and updo take me back to my 2007 prom. The dress wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t for the strings hoisting up the bodice work? And I wish the shoes were just a different shade of anything but that skin tone color that totally clashes with her own. I feel like there’s just a lot of potential, but it just doesn’t work overall. Her face is pretty though :)

      • Betsy

Yeah, but were yours real diamonds? After all, this is a Hearts On Fire (brand of diamonds) event. So I’m sure they were happy to lend diamonds to everyone!

        • twigg

Now i’m just imagining Oprah throwing diamonds at people…

          • Donna Tabor

YOU get some diamonds! And YOU get some diamonds!

            Rinse, repeat.

            • 3boysful

              sigh. Love me some Chopard.

    • MilaXX

Poor Uncles. It’s cold as a witches tit out there. I wouldn’t want to be stuck in a crowded train station for anything in the world.
As for Emmy; The good. like the peach & cream colors and I think the accessories are all great. Hair/makeup – really nice. Not in love with the earrings, but minor quibble.
The bad: those cut outs on the bodice are just too much. The shoes are cute, but a size too big.

      • NinaBoo

Oh, I fear the cat-ear boob trend is on a roll. This makes three this week with Emma Roberts & Jenna Dewan-Tatum. Dang.

        • KateShouldBeWorking

I feel like there’s a “cat tits”/”cat nip” joke somewhere but I can’t quite find it.

    • boweryboy

Tragic, from tip to toe. ’nuff said.

    • Nicholas

The Lot 666 earrings are a bit too much on the nose, no?

    • @Biting Panda

      Baby Houseman realness.
Also, I hate the shoes and the way her feet don’t fit in them.

      • Sarah

We’re supposed to do the show in two days, you won’t show me the lifts, I’m not sure of the turns, I’m doing all this to save your ass, what I really want to do is drop you on it!

    • Aidan B

Hang in there, Uncles. I have spent several days since the new year stuck in various Philly-area train stations/shelters, so I feel you.
Also, I don’t like this. Her head looks great but everything beneath it is a head-scratcher.

    • Danielle

I like the idea of those shoes.

    • hughman

It would make a great towel fold on a hotel bed in Vegas.

      • Rand Ortega

I was in Vegas recently & that dress is identical to the drapes hanging in our hotel room at the Wynn.

        • demidaemon

I hope J. Mendel is the only designer taking inspiration from Vegas hotel room drapery.

          • Rand Ortega

            And the last.

    • sienna elm

I like the dress – cat’s cradle bodice and all.

    • KT

This is not pretty. This is crazy and overwraught and matchy and looks like she got TP’ed by local whipper snappers

      • sagecreek

Bonus points for use of “whippersnappers”.

        • KT

          Yay! I love bonus points

      • Imasewsure

        So she got Bieb’d

      • EveEve

The Stylists got to her. Damn shame.

    • charlotte

      B-o-r-i-n-g.

      • SRQkitten

Exactly. The stylist’s version of Sominex.

    • SuzyQuzey

The dress is great! The shoes, however…no. Way too much toe cleavage.

    • Garcia Loca

Other than the weirdness in the sternum area, this is a great look for her!

    • Rand Ortega

Love the jewelry but for all intents & purposes she’s wearing dyed to match drapes.

    • Gatto Nero

She always looks like she’s trying too hard and never quite getting there.
The shoes are too big for her and look painful besides.
(I’m so sorry about your travel hell.)

    • Bridget Smith

You and everyone in children’s publishing: the American Library Association midwinter conference is in Philadelphia this weekend, and everyone is trapped in Penn Station trying to get there. GOOD LUCK.

      • sagecreek

What was the ALA thinking? January conferences need to be in Tampa! Miami! San Antonio! (Although San Antonio had snow today, so…go figure.)

        • Bridget Smith

Hah, right? I have a friend who just escaped the cold by running off to a conference in San Diego, and we are all wildly jealous.

        • AnneElliot

Well, not really snow here in San Antonio, just freezing rain over night. Schools were closed and most people started work, but not me — library open as usual at 10 a.m. I think Austin got a tiny dusting, probably gone by noon. It’s supposed to get up to 70 on Sunday.

But yes, TLo NEEDS to come to San Antonio!!! Or Austin, which is even more fun and full of hipsters. And the world’s best independent bookstore!!! Please, TLo!!

    • The Counselor

I’m generally a lot more forgiving of the messier hairstyles than many seem to be, but I think this look could’ve been improved by an updo that was still this shape, but more polished. And, of course, no to the shoes.

    • Ashleigh

      It’s ALL ridiculous

    • jtabz

Goodness, I hate that bodice. Feels overworked and dated at the same time.

    • sagecreek

What? Your publishers do not provide a VIP helicopter for you? GIVE US THEIR PHONE NUMBER!

No, this is…okay. It’s quite silly for January, for one thing, and I find those shoes ludicrous, as you clearly cannot walk more than about 12 feet in them, but she looks pretty.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Sorry, I’m blind (see icon) – is she wearing a dress or does the female naked body supposed to look like chiffon?

    • LeelaST

Looks way too old for her. Don’t like the cutouts. Dont like the color (too pale.) With all that draping would have been much better as a gown. Don’t like that the shoes are duplicating the bodice lines exactly – and fabric color – very matchy.

    • Michele

      No, it’s not pretty.

    • schadenfreudelicious

The longer you stare at her feet the weirder that toe cleavage looks…

      • Annaline39

        Yes!

    • Valdri8

That is hiddy with a capital DIDDY

    • greymain

uh…sausage Friday??? did I miss it?????? Sorry ’bout your hurts and cranky……

    • Julie Parr

Penn Station? Definitely one of the worst places on earth. Bowels of hell.

      • ailujailuj

        omg. such horror.

      • decormaven

“Pink Milford granite columns– I don’t think it’s crazy to be attached to a Beaux-Arts masterpiece through which Teddy Roosevelt came and went.” At least the Uncles can console themselves with this thought while waiting in Train Hell.

    • Tricia

      Those shoes look paaaaiiiiinful.

    • stubbornthoughts

      Overworked, but still gracefully pretty.

    • Imasewsure

I had a bathing suit in the 70’s with the same neckline and for that reason I guess I’m picturing a lifeguard whistle hanging from her neck… as a dress it’s pretty but dull. The shoes look ouchy

    • Squareface

She is one with her dress. She reminds me of a hard boiled egg. There’s no contrast anywhere except for her hair. Heavier eye makeup/red lip and bedroom hair is my recommendation.

    • Pennymac

Oh, for fucks sake. Its JANUARY. January, I tell you!I don’t care if you’re in the desert in Dubai, in January this dress is inappropriate!

It would be stunning in May, however.

    • cocohall

Desperate times call for junk food and adult beverages. You can at least cater your travel hell and laugh later when you find cheetos dust in your pockets. Good luck Uncles.

This dress is the angelic flip side to Mindy’s goth bridesmaid look. She does NOT seem like a good bridesmaid candidate however. High maintenance and unlikely to share her flask of vodka (or remember to bring one) when nerves start to fray.

    • Tlazolteotl

That top has “Leeloo Dallas multipass” written all over it. But you, my dear, are no Leeloo Dallas.

      • amanda siegelson

i love this… and you for writing it.

        • AnneElliot

          FTW!!!!

    • Kbear

Do you suppose this has a zipper? Or do you pull on that cord around her neck to cinch up all the scarves she is wearing? It is kind of a mix of bondage with a nightgown…. I’m confused. The nasty shoes don’t help.

    • nannypoo

Well I hate it. Also she always poses with that simpleminded look on her face – eyebrows raised, a little smile but not too much. I suppose it’s better than
taking a chance on an actual smile, but it annoys me. I have a cold and it’s snowing again, so do not mess with me.

    • AmeliaEve

Do the uncles not know how to find the bars in Penn Station? What they lack in elegance they make up for in the availability of comfy seating and alcoholic beverages.

    • a_liking

don’t care for the shoes, but Emmy can make me love basically anything. she looks beautiful.

    • marlie

This isn’t thrilling me. The bodice of her dress doesn’t seem to be fitting correctly, or her posture is so weird that the dress bulges in the back. I don’t hate the shoes, but I don’t think they’re right for this dress. But her hair and makeup are pretty, so there’s that.

    • SophieCollier

I don’t think we should be seeing that much of her toes. Badly fitted shoes, but for the most part, it’s pretty and interesting.

    • Carly Clement

The Neckline is far too complicated, and the shoes are wrong! and I love a good nude shoe… but this is wrong even for me! Far FAR FAR FAR too busy!!! and I dont even know if I like that pink!

    • AnneElliot

I like her and her hair and makeup are pretty, but that dress is over-designed and I’m sick to death of nude-colored dresses on pale women. Plus I hate her “I have to pee stance.” And it’s damn cold today and I’m freezing just looking at her. It’s January, dammit!! Pack that dress up and bring it out again in June.

But that’s not nearly as bad as TLo stuck on a train platform, so I should shut up.

    • colleenjanel

I’m sorry … I couldn’t see anything in these pictures … I couldn’t get past the sheer joy of knowing that lip COLOR is making a return!!!

    • quiltrx

I always have to start with “I love her”! I really like this, tricky but it’s working. I wish it were a bit more of a color, though.
And if I can see almost your entire 4th toe, those are some poorly-designed shoes.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

I think this was a gown and someone cut it short with a pair of scissors. In the last image it looks like it wasn’t cut straight. I love the earrings. Hate the shoes. She is lovely.

    • kerryev

The last picture makes me think it’s pretty, but ‘mousseline cord detail’? If it’s bad on paper, best ensure it works in reality.

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

Damn. It’s a difficult bodice and she was making it work, until I scrolled down and saw the saggy swags of fabric obliterating her waist and the unfortunate length. If only it were a gown and/or she had gone for a dark shoe.

    • E. D.

How can she walk in those shoes – they’re huge! The dress looks too complicated, but without that center V cord, it would be a lot better.

    • Monabel

Poor dears. I hope you are home in the bosom of your cats.
That dress does not live up to its ambition.

    • amaranth16

      Take care, uncles!

I love this, I love her, pretty pretty pretty.

    • Latin Buddy

      Dirty Dancing-Final Scene-Jennifer Grey-Pre-Nose-Job-Realness

    • LaSylphide

This looks like it can’t decide if it wants to be underwear or a dress. I think underwear is winning. And don’t wear low-cut shoes if you have bunions. You’re great, Emmy, but missing the boat with this one.

    • Susan Shafer-Landau

      *like.

    • In_Stitches

I could argue that such a humdrum skirt doesn’t serve such a sexy bodice, but I like the counter point. It’s a neat little dress that would be far better served in a declarative color instead of this paas-dyed failure of a tribute to easter. Her head is dramatic, sexy and gorgeous, but it’s a bit over done for this kind of look.

    • Anabag

I think she looks lovely, but the dress is totally inappropriate for January.

    • scoobynacks

Am I the only person not a fan of toe cleavage? Closed toe, open toe, pick something where the shoe looks like it’s doing what it’s meant to do as opposed to one where it looks like your feet don’t fit in it. Real people don’t have toes the length of pencil erasers. I don’t get why anybody should get a pass on designing shoes for actual feet.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

I feel like this dress is an opt-tit-cal illusion. Like one of those Magic Eye images. If you stare at it long enough, her boobs will float right off of her torso.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      *sends drinks and a hovercar*

I can’t imagine it’s not entirely too much for the event, but that’s a great outfit. Color me shocked that she can wear a color that pale, and the shoes are delightful.

      • decormaven

[Note to self: File Space Kitty's contact info for next time I need hovercar lift.]

    • trisker

Poor TLo! Travel delays suck. I think she looks pretty except for shoes–I usually like her style. Good weekend to all BKs and TLo when u get home!

    • StillGary

Pretty! wish it had gone down with the floor — shoes are too, although I agree there are fit issues.

    • Lilyana_F

I think she looks adorable. Especially love the hair and face.

    • Chuck Barthelme

I’m thinking she’s just out for some meat. Shoes and dress combined seem to be screaming “F#@% Me!”

    • Kelly Sowers

Her make-up looks SO MUCH BETTER!
I think this look would be endlessly better if it was a color or two.

    • Pterodactyl111

I like it, but some color would be nice.

    • Michele Morningstar

I actually adore every single element in this outfit.

    • MzzPants

      Overwrought crepe paper.

    • Tanya Wade

I like it. Ice sucks, be it on the tracks or the wings of a plane. Or dove.

    • Kate

Would have been better as a floor length.

    • GeoDiva

She is too pale for that dress. On a woman of color, much better, but you still have to ditch the matchy shoes.

    • unbornfawn

She is blending into the wall. Always NO to toe cleavage. I hope the rest of the promo tour
      goes a lot smoother.

      • lifeisastory

agreed . toe cleavage is never cute

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

interesting dress but she’s so washed out. the eye makeup is not helping. it matches the shoe color.

    • ThaliaMenninger

The only think I like is the ring. The dress is too pale and too complicated and the shoes need more there there. I don’t need to see all of your toes if you’re wearing pumps.

      • lifeisastory

Agreed. The dress is needlessly complicated, as if designed by someone who thinks he’s extremely clever.

    • Sally Spannagle

I think it would look better if it were floor length. Either way the color washes her out.

    • Sabin

More kitty boobs! Having spent the last 16 hours in bed with stomach flu, I appreciate my daily cat bodice.

    • prisma

      That’s just tacky.

    • mickiemonkey

Cat’s cradle neckline! My inner 9 year old is happy.

    • CatherineRhodes

Does Penn Station have a bar?

    • BrooklynBomber

She looks very pretty. The dress is a bit much.

    • demidaemon

That bodice is way overworked and somehow manages to still show too much skin. NO.

    • alyce1213

Penn Station is such a shithole. Sorry you weren’t in the infinitely nicer-to-be-stranded-in Grand Central Station.
Oh, the dress I don’t like. The bodice is gimmicky with not much payoff.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

Poor Bitter Uncles. May the hotel comp you a giant, delicious bottle of wine.

    • LaDonna Carpenter

I’d be afraid of stalkers wielding scissors if it was me wearing a dress that was held together with just one string on top. From the waist up, it’s interesting, if a little overworked. Even in stills, you can tell the skirt moves nicely and it has just enough “Seven Year Itch” to it to be very sexy. I love the shoes, too. The hair and make up are OK, but I’d have liked a little more color considering that the rest of the outfit is so devoid of it.

    • AceOn6

Good gawd, no. Over designed, doesn’t fit, wrong color, 1980s shoes., earrings don’t work with the style of the dress.

    • CPK1

This whole look just washes her out.

    • heartbot

For being so overwrought, the dress is incredibly vanilla, and the shoes render it moreso. She looks like she doesn’t love it, either, though.

    • Little_Olive

      1) This in JANUARY? Hahahaha c’mon. 2) Those shoes are tacky. 3) Is the planning on being suspended from something? 4) Her boobs (whatever is left of them in that thing) worry me. 5) Super blah hair. 6) I find myself wanting to give her a Red Bull.

      = Princess Buttersnooze.

What, I’m on the other end of the world, its 100º here and I’m also cranky.

    • Suse

Why, why, why do these young ladystars pose pigeon-toed???

    • Diego!

It’s not pretty, it’s not flattering and it’s not her dress nor shoes nor make up nor hair. OUT.

    • DominoEstella

I can’t get past that awful hair

    • Scott Cooper

It’s a little complicated and mature for her.

    • Cathy S

      No.

    • OhSheila

her eyes look jaundiced, and the outfit is awesome, if it weren’t beige.

    • melanie0866

Pretty. Not very interesting. Is she in Australia? Otherwise it’s not season-appropriate at all.

    • oohsparkley!

I was having trouble deciding if it was a win or not. I finally decided that if it were a real color, it would be much better.

    • webslice33

i like you Fiona but I am disappointed with you for effing your BF’s brother!!! uggh! hehehe, really so disappointed!

    • katiemckinnie

She’s swimming in those shoes and her poor toesies are gripping for dear life. I can’t with the dress. It kinda gives me a headache.

    • DesertDweller79

I was going to auto complain about cutouts, but I actually kind of like these? Maybe? Don’t like the white mixed with the nude at all. Kind of looks like the dress got dirty in sections. Hate her shoes.

    • bertkeeter

      Nasty!

    • Jessica O’Connell

The dress is FAR too complicated for its own good and the shoes are just ugly.
