Emma Watson in Christian Dior at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards

Posted on January 14, 2014

We keep trying to like this, but we’re afraid we’re going to sprain something in the attempt.

Emma Watson attends the 2014 Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, California in a Christian Dior couture outfit paired with Roger Vivier shoes, Repossi and Anita Ko rings, and Dior earrings.

Because we’ve been stretching and tying ourselves in knots, but it’s just not gonna happen. We love the idea more than the outcome. The pants and shoes look great. And we love the idea of some sort of faux gown worn over them. But this faux gown looks limp and cheap and like an afterthought. We need something in the Auntie Mame mode. A long, glittery duster and some hostess pants for the red carpet, please. This pale imitation has left us flat.

Although we do appreciate her attempting something different at an event like this.

I’m gonna give her my approval. She went further and wore some exotic ensemble and I applaud her for that. She looks great. The back is what is destroying the whole look. Had the back and the “skirt” back been a much closer, this would have been a killer look. But she really looks gorgeous!

    • mshesterp

Agreed! I think it’s super fun and she’s got the attitude to pull it off. There’s something very sassy about it that I’m digging. And what a cute little figure in those pants!

      • Diego!

Word! I still have some issues with the back of the “skirt” but she looks stunning!

        • Rhonda Shore

Me too! She is stunning, excellent hair and make-up!!!

    • StellaZafella

I bet it “moves” better than it “stands”…that chiffon is just crying for a wind machine…or even a slight breeze.

      • AshleyDeHaye

It does. She looked fab walking out on the stage as a presenter.

        • Diego!

I saw her walking too and it was a killer look!

    • Liz Lake

I concur. I unabashedly love this look. She took a risk. She styled it beautifully. And while there were some flaws. I couldn’t help but loving it. I don’t know that distance between the “skirt” and the back destroyed it, but I think the distance did prevent this from being a total success.

      • Diego!

I think if they had been closer (the skirt parts) and camouflage her pants, would have given this look a surprise effect. But I love it. She looks amazing and it shows. 😀

      • Susan Carson

I agree. i thought her looked great and did something unexpected. kudos.

    • Emily Smith

I agree I like this for being different. Also do you think she spent the evening in the bathroom giggling at everyone else trying to pee in their gowns? I would have.

      • Diego!

ROFL hahahahaahahhahahahaaa xD Comment of the day!!! *STANDING OVATION* hahahahaha xD I almost wet my pants! hahaa

    • MaggieMae

      Exactly. This.

  • HVM

    I unashamedly love this.

  • Spreecord

It’s a… smock? Made out of depressed curtains? With… pants?

I’m not sure what she was hoping to accomplish, but I think she fell short of where she was aiming.

  • thecitysleeps

A for effort. At least it’s not boring. The material of that red thing looks cheap though, which I’m sure it’s not. And I don’t like the shoes with that colour.

  • Claudia Fernandes

Like it very much, it’s bold and young and her face looks beatiful. In the screen didn’t look cheap at all, nor in the photos

    • Mary229

I just said the same thing. Her face looks stunning.

  • Errick Loyola

This girl really is a fashion risk taker in my eyes. Didn’t really care for her in Harry Potter, but I’ve always seen her choices of clothing to be bold and different.

And damn, those pants look fantastic on her. And her face is gorgeous!

    • Evan

I loved her in Harry Potter. I’ve always thought she comes across as very intelligent and grounded, just like Hermoine.

    • GorgeousThings

She’s really the only one who can pull a look like this off. Pity it’s a look that just won’t allow itself to get pulled off, except to put it back on the hanger and return to Dior. But I agree – I love her hair and makeup. And I love the pants.

  • charlotte

Party in the front, business in the back?

  • altalinda

Respectfully, disagree. I think that the gown looks crisp and clean. I just wish it were hemmed.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

Agreed, there’s a difference between fabric that gracefully glides across the floor and standing in a big puddle.

    • SugarSnap108

Yes. It’s really just the puddle on the bottom that looks half-assed to me. I love the pants and shoes, and the color of the gown. Oh, and her face.

  • LeelaST

This was a “trying too hard to be edgy” for me. I like the idea of a more substantial glamorous top – like a jacket version of Michelle Dockery’s dress – over these pants and shoes would be pretty terrific.

  • Sobaika

I don’t hate it. Something a bit more OTT and fabulous might’ve come together better, but as it is… I don’t hate it.

  • It’s a formal pinny and that is not a good idea. I am also not a fan of that weird pearl earring. On the other hand, those shoes are stunning and her face is always good.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

Have I gone bonkers or is she only wearing one weird pearl earring?

    • kimmeister

That style of earring, especially rendered in pearls, is disturbing to me. Looks like she has tumors or boils sprouting out of her lobes.

  • Daisy Walker

I think this is a modern version of the Auntie Mame look. I love everything about it and want those blue suede shoes on my feet!

  • tiger18lily

I’d love this dress for a movie premiere or a lot of other events, but it seems a little too… maybe casual? I don’t know. Emma is someone who really could have brought it with some great couture and this just seems a bit of a let down.

  • Jessica Freeman

If it was a bit shorter, from the front, it works for me. The back became some sort of an afterthought…

  • Thank god she wore pants. For some reason I can’t help but see a Kardashian in this with a pair of granny panties or, worse, a thong. Now off to bleach my brain.

    • lundibleu

It’s a terrible thought, but my brain headed that way too. Though I try to avoid the K-family, so wasn’t sure who I would’ve put in it. I thought even Heidi would draw the line at that.

    • barbarienne

I did a double-take, thinking she had maybe accidentally tucked her dress into her underwear in the bathroom.

Points for being daring, but the whole thing says, “LOOK AT MY ASS, IS MY ASS NOT FABULOUS?” just a little too loudly for me.

      • scoobynacks

In fairness to Emma, it IS fabulous.

      • AnneElliot

Yes. It looks like she was getting ready and the limo driver showed up and she grabbed a bathrobe to throw on over her leggings, but forgot that it was missing the entire back panel. And she was going to dress in the limo, but the garment bag got left behind and she had to show up looking like this. Oh, and she also forgot one of her earrings.

Or maybe it’s a really fancy smock from the hairdresser’s, because her face and hair are beautiful. I do love the shoes.

    • demidaemon

Why did you share this horrible thought and put it out on the internets for them to get the idea to this? WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYY?!

      • I apologize. Some things are best unsaid. 🙂

  • Nicholas

Better to be daring than boring, but we should probably start a pyre at the exit door of award shows for celebrities to toss their Dior garbs on.

  • TeacherH

I usually like what she wears, but find this just awkward. When she turned around, my impression was not “edgy” but “hospital gown”. But poor Emma really suffered from the fact that every too I glimpsed that red, I hoped it was Lupita, so my heart would sink at the sight of her. Head looks good.

  • anneland

This is basically my Burning Man look. I take a sparkly evening gown and remove the back almost completely. Although I wear booty shorts. And accessorize with dust.

  • RussellH88

I love this. I cannot help it. It may be my favorite look of the night.

  • Tatiana Luján

I like it. I even like the back more than the front.

  • Constanza Álvarez Espinoza

A big NO for me. The color of the dress (gown? cape?) is gorgeous, but not only this thing it’s an hybrid, it’s just too long for a quite short girl. If it was a proper dress, it would have been quite nice with that back, but not for a Movie Premiere.
The hair is a shame, I can feel it crying.
I won’t comment of the pants and shoes… argh!!

  • Anna_Cecilia

    Michelle Dockery needed those shoes.

I really don’t hate this either, especially considering it’s Dior (as a sidebar, if you DON’T have a Dior contract, does that mean you get the halfway decent outfits?), but agree that it needs to be better executed. I find the makeup very heavy. I love your face, Emma! I want to see you, not your makeup.

  • shirab

Why didn’t the Dior people give Jennifer L. something from this side of the showroom to wear, instead of that bundled sheet thingie?

  • Deborah

Thank you, thank you, thank you for linking to the ONLY acceptable Auntie Mame, Rosalind Russell. There is only one Mame Dennis!

    • Snailstsichr

      Amen, sister.

  • colleenjanel

I love the back. The front needs more interest. I think if the skirt had been more open and it looked intentional, I could have gotten behind it more. As is, it looks like she’s in the store trying on the dress without taking her pants off.

I do love that she paired it with a blue shoe though.

  • Danielle

I appreciate anything that lets me eat as much as I want at dinner and hides a potential food baby.

  • @Biting Panda

Bless her, she’s posing her little heart out. But what she’s selling, I’m not buying.

  • ashtangajunkie

I like this. The colours are lovely are her, it’s sassy, and she took a risk. I think it paid off. Also, FACE.

  • Sarah

I have been staring at this trying to decide if I like it. I don’t hate, but I think it’s a bit forced (I’m looking at YOU, weird earring). What I really regret is all my staring has now made this a backwards robe, and that’s not what’s meant to be going on, I’m pretty sure.

    • gigi kennedy

yes weird earing is eating at me. would have loved to see beautiful jewelry deployed here

  • knockknockknockpenny

  • cmb123

LOVE the color on her and i think the neckline and shape of the “dress” is great. She looks amazing. It is the disconnect in the back that throws me. I would give her an “attagirl” and aplaud her for taking a risk and looking almost completely fab while doing so.

  • It should have been more open in the front to match the back. It looks like the back of her dress got caught in the limo door and she put on pants as a quick fix.

  • lundibleu

I actually really like it, but think it could’ve been improved. Just imagine those trousers with a tailored top and cape in the red. Now THAT could have looked stunning, and I think she could pull it off.

  • nannypoo

    It’s idiotic.

  • cocohall

It is interesting how polarizing this look is. I’m definitely in the “love it” camp. And big old snaps for doing something a bit different from the rest of the pack, especially her peers. Girls got moxie!

  • Lilah

I admit I don’t like everything Raf Simons is doing at Dior, but I really like this. It’s fresh and modern. She looks great.

  • Lilithcat

She got home from yoga class and threw on a robe.

  • kt

I think she looks fabulous, but, much more importantly, so does she. She’s selling it, and whoever said it looks better with movement is 100% spot on.

  • SewingSiren

She looks good, she almost always does. But the dress or apron more accurately is dumb.

  • decormaven

The look is crying for a dramatic, edgy, metallic cuff. I give her snaps for the effort, though, and for those killer shoes.

    • gigi kennedy

ooh a cuff would have been fab here!

  • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluk

I only saw this when she came out to present, and the glimpse I got made me think it was a jumpsuit with big, swishy palazzo pants and I thought I loved it! But now that I see what it really is, I am disappoint.

  • MoHub

I was shocked at the way the Fashion Police team gushed over this. Front is not bad, but when she turned around, I got the impression the construction team had run out of fabric and had to throw that sash on to hold the back together.

    • demidaemon

I had a lot of shock over their likes as well. At least they came to their senses and only nominated the two most deserving to be best-dressed for the evening.

I thought their worsts were all over the place. Paula Patton was the only one I could really get on-board with, but I thought for sure that Joan was going to overrule everyone and give it to Zoe Saldana, who definitely should have been nominated.

  • ralish

I love the idea of this, and I don’t think it’s a total miss, but I do agree that the dress piece could use more interest.

  • Ginny Ellsworth

Looks like a fancy hospital gown. And in the absence of Stella’s wind machine, she keeps handling the fabric like a magician trying to show you a trick. I wish she had kept the pants/shoe combo and paired them with a really edgy top!

Did she lose an earring on the Red Carpet? I only see the one.

    • demidaemon

I think I have seen these reverse mullet dresses before. They are pretty stupid, but adding pants doesn’t make them look any better.

      • Ginny Ellsworth

You know what could have been worse? Biker shorts!

        • demidaemon

Hey! Don’t give Dior any ideas!

  • guest2visits

It just seems to fit Emma’s personality in a delightful way – very pretty. I do agree that the red fabric comes off cheap in some pics. That Giuliana hostess for the RC had one of the best looking red dresses I’ve seen in awhile.

  • MartyBellerMask

Good for her for trying something different. My thought is that the presenters have more leeway than the nominees.
Sure is ugly though. Just bad, bad. And her hair was not great either.

  • French_Swede

    She can certainly wear orange!

What’s up with the earring? Did she lose one of them? Looks strange ….

  • bizarro

    I love. She looks fantastic.

  • kayleymaybe

I bet she was the most comfortable one there. Because she’s wearing an apron.

  • MarieLD

I like it a lot. She’s so tiny, too much Auntie Mame would have overwhelmed her.

  • ballerinawithagun

I love the idea of this, just isn’t taken to fruition. Hem it up, close the back and open the front a little, then fabulous! That is not the kind of earring that you wear as a single. (Coming from the woman who has one larger earlobe remnant of the 80s, shaved hair on one side with one LARGE earring.)

  • marlie

I like this – I like it a lot. The only thing that I would have changed is the color of the shoes. But it’s fun and edgy, and still a bit demure and classy. Though I’m not thrilled wit6h the 1-earring thing. And her makeup is gorgeous.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I said it before- it’s a fancy hospital gown. I’m not here for it. And the fact that she had to hold it open posing, so people would get the “point” lets me know it failed.

  • MilaXX

I like the idea of this, but not the execution. I think it has to do with the fabrics use. I don;t like the chiffon-y dress paired with the suede shoes. They feel like they are fighting each other.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m going to give Emma credit for going for a different look on the RC, and I rather like this.

  • Sunraya

I do not like this at all. And she seems like a smirky little thing, doesn’t she???

  • I’d like it a lot better if it had the skirt in back and the opening in front. It does need some kind of sparkle or something.

  • KinoEye

An A for effort, Miss Emma. Really can’t fault her for trying something so eye-catching and different. Plus, I really love that shade of orange for her. And hurray for thick, dark brows coming back in style! 12-year-old me is doing a happy dance and laughing at those mean girls who made fun of my eyebrows.

  • bouionice

I applaud her for taking a major fashionista risk but this kind of looks like an apron over pants and i just don’t understand the blue suede shoe wit this dress.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Emma should be the Dior girl instead of J-Law.

    • Imasewsure

Emma would be perfect for Dior… she could totally work that edgy/girly brand in to submission.
My theory is that JLaw wants off of the fashionista train anyway which is why she has looked so half-assed lately on the RC (that and Dior is not the brand for her at all)!!

      • demidaemon

I think Jlaw is ready for a flat out vacation. She’ either been poledancing or filming for the past three years straight.

    • alyce1213

Absolutely right. And this is why T-Lo and the BKs should run the fashion world.

  • Sophia Finfer

I actually love this and love her for doing something different. But I also just love her in general, so perhaps am slightly biased. But that color looks fabulous on her and it’s so refreshing to see something less traditional in a sea of boringly pretty gowns.

  • boweryboy

Please don’t hurt yourself. It’s yet another Raf Simon hot mess. I think you guys summed up his aesthetic nicely – the idea of his designs are much better than the outcome.
On the otherhand, Ms. Emma is working this like it owes her rent. That alone makes it an IN for me.

  • Mary229

I can’t get past how pretty her face looks and I’ll forgive a ton for that.

  • suzq

It drove me crazy that the back was open and the front was closed. So when she walks, the skirt just flaps around and doesn’t poof out dramatically.

And the side slits….are they there to give you a place to put your thumbs or to fool you into thinking you have pockets? If it were me, I’d be leaving a trail of tissues, etc…. as I walked down the runway.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Don’t sprain yourselves, Uncles. It’s just dull.

  • Nancer

I disagree, I love this. But why one earring, did she lose the other? Some fabulous accessories were called for, she missed the mark there. But the dress/pants and shoes – love!

  • GorgeousThings

Auntie Mame is one of my favorite movies ever!!!!

Now, on to this. I also like the idea. But I keep coming back to questioning WHY anyone thinks Raf Simons is a good designer? He was much more Dior before he came to Dior. These days all of his designs look like brain cramps done up in fabric.

    • demidaemon

Agreed! After hearing about how the film came to fruition though, I do wonder what it would have been like with Angela Lansbury in the leading role, not that I don’t like Rosalind Russell, who played her in the film version.

ETA: Correct names of awesome film stars.

  • conniemd

I don’t like the short sleeves and high neck. Put in a sleeveless V-neck and it looks a lot more red carpet and less lounging robe.

  • Imasewsure

I never really got a good look at this one but now that I do, I can see it isn’t working at all. Keep trying Emma (but do better please!)

  • ailujailuj

  • Sam Smith

I wish there wasn’t such a gap in the back. I liked the dress, something different and unique, right venue and she is working it.

  • msdamselfly

Too much fabric, especially in the bodice and waist. Her facial expressions are really off-putting

  • Kappyapp

I agree with the assessment of ‘cheap’ (looking). Love the idea, but it just doesn’t work

  • formerlyAnon

It’s not awful, it’s just the nth degree of wannabe.

The back “skirt” needed to be closed or almost closed, but even more importantly, there should have been bedazzlements. This could have had a very glamorous air of overkill, instead it looks like someone wanted to be spare and elegant and yet modern with an edge, and had a near-miss.

  • imakeart

What’s up with the one earring?

  • Jessica O’Connell

I was hoping you’d feature this one! I personally really like it, both for being different and just because I think it looks good. A little confused as to why she’s wearing only one earring, though – is that a thing?

    • I remember thinking one earring was the coolest thing when I used to do it in the 80s!

  • Lindsay Donohue

She needs to fire whoever applied her bronzer. It looks like she has a muddy complexion, not her usual glowing self.

  • Kate4queen

I think for me it’s because it lacks symmetry. If it was less gaping at the back and a little more so at the front, I might have gone along with it.

  • Ediths_Head

Yes! More Auntie Mame (always!) and less weird T-shirt dress that has been attacked by scissors. Love the shoes and the color combo though. Also, love the strong brow.

Is her second earring in her mouth? Is that what prevented her from closing it in so many shots?

  • ilikemints

When I saw this on the livestream, I laughed and laughed. I love it. I feel like you need a sense of humor to really pull off risky fashion, and Emma has it. She knew exactly what she was doing and she owned it. I mean, look at that smirk in the first picture!

  • deelup

She has the invisibility cloak on backwards!

  • mjude

I do love her. but not sure about this

  • Dagney

    Risky. Different. Love.

    • Sue_Asponte

Agree! The top half is just beautiful – I love the T-shirt sleeves – and the bottom is risky and fun.

  • LaSylphide

Red on the rc is becoming trite, but aside from that, I really like it.

  • HOSTESS PANTS! God, so close.

  • I love the concept of this look as well. However, I think Lucille Ball in “I Love Lucy” and Rosalind Russell in “Auntie Mame” pulled this classic look off with more flair – to the point where the beauty made you salivate with envy. It’s a style that you kind of have to earn – either with age – or with a certain personality – i.e. Ball and Russell. You have to enter a grand foyer or a Manhattan apartment with martini’s in hand for your guests and followed by running your hand through your perky hair. (Now I sound like the J.Peterman catalog.)

    • demidaemon

So awesomely described! And thanks for reminding me of who played Auntie Mame in the feature film!

  • jw_ny

it’s so weird….a “look at my ass” gown. why would anyone do that?

She really had to pile on the makeup in order to get any visual interest from the front…

  • Trickytrisha

Love the her spunk and the look, but it’s a bit too casual for the event?

  • I say good on ya to anyone willing to wear something other than a sparkly/strapless/ballgown/mermaid dress with an updo and a giant sparkling boring necklace and/or earrings.

  • giddypony

SO she’s wearing somekind of freaky apron…alrighty. Love the color, and the full coverage of the apron would avoid anything getting anything on your capri pants…

  • Nazzzy

    Well, I love it.

  • DominoEstella

Nope. I think she has pulled it off perfectly. She looks great and this is awesome.

  • E. D.

The worst out of those who tried.

  • largishbearishAtlish

The hair and makeup is flawless. I give her points for TRYING something different, but doesn’t work for me (not a fan of the blue shoes) but would rather she have tried that gone boring….nice try!

  • Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

I adore a good hostess pant ensemble, but this one seems backwards and droopy and sad. But I think Emma herself looks lovely.

    • murt

Definitely…. the dress looks more like a hospital gown that’s come open at the back.

  • jjtxgrrl

I love this…except I dont think the gown should drag on floor….it would be better if it just barely hit her toes. I think the color is gorgeous on her, and I like the back and the front together. IMHO.

  • housefulofboys

I was thinking maybe…maybe…maybe as I scrolled down. And then I saw those SHOES and I died and said YES! Love them on their own, and love what they do to this outfit. She looks so cute in this and it’s creative enough to make heads turn.

  • TigerLaverada

Agree completely. I had the exact same thought before I read your thoughts after the scrolldown — like the idea, don’t like the execution.

  • Nonnah

I like it – perfect for the Golden Globes. However the pockets have created a place to hang her thumbs which is creating a “look at my dress while I hold it out to the sides” effect. Also, do you think the one earring was intentional or was someone crawling around on the floor looking for the other?

  • demidaemon

Appreciation understood. Outfit is still dumb and, now that I see close-ups, really cheap-looking.

  • Joey Melliza

didn’t bjork wear a similar outfit of the same idea by christopher nemeth?

  • CeeQ

    1. I love the colour of that dress. 2. I love the pants. 3. I love the shoes. 4. I love her hair and make up but two things make me grumpy – A) DRESS PANTS Hybrid. No. and B) Close your mouth, do not pose like that Hermione! We are not a cod fish!

  • MM4321

    Pose hard.

  • mdcoon127

Like it a lot. It flowed very well when she walked so the fabric must have been ok, or even good. She looked very “her age” and fresh.

  • katiessh

look she’s great, and pretty, and i will always love her, but she’s basically wearing a backless apron. i hope this doesn’t become a trend

  • lifeisastory

Trying too hard to be cool.

  • I see what she was trying to do, but wrong venue.

  • Sam Erin

I’m going to have to say I love it. Weird earring thing can go, though. Very refreshing and she’s pretty gorg.

  • Candigirl1968

Perhaps if this was on Charlize Theron or maybe Cate, it might work (but still would be on the bubble). Emma isn’t tall enough, mature enough or sassy enough to pull this off.

  • melanie0866

NO NO NO. It’s a simple rule: “Never wear pants under a dress, unless you are Kay Thompson and it is 1957.”

    Love the shoes.
