Emma Watson at JFK

Posted on January 23, 2014

Today, Emma is playing the part of Unhappy Beatnik.

Emma Watson arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport, JFK, to catch a flight out of New York City.

Perhaps she has just been struck by the futility of existence. Or maybe she’s just totally bummed out about The Bomb. Or maybe she’s not in the mood to be papped at the moment. It’s probably that last one but we like the idea of her pondering existence as she makes her way through an airport. Is there a place on earth more likely to provoke one to ask oneself “Why the hell am I here?”

In other news, Emma should rest easy because we think her outfit is adorable (we’re sure she was concerned about that)  and Beatnik Chic is a perfect look for her. This isn’t quite coat porn, but it’s cute.

Her hair is doing something weird, but this is a fantastic look for her.

    • MaggieMae

Soft porn, for sure. I want that coat!

    • Diego!

She looks like a movie star. Congratulations Hermione!!! I love this whole look. It’s so beautiful and chic! :D

    • NBG

I lived near JFK for 20 years. That existential angst sets in as soon as you walk in any of the terminals. Love the coat, though.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

That’s all airports. In the words of Douglas Adams “It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression, ‘As pretty as an airport.”- depressing places.

        • Kayceed

Especially when you consider some of the magnificent train stations around the country….

        • Constant Reader

I love a Douglas Adams reference!

      • Cousin_Rose

Our last trip through JFK was so bad that we now select flights based on NOT going through JFK. Detroit or Atlanta are far better.

        • NBG

I was pleasantly surprised at the Detroit airport the last time i was there. I had a good experience.

      • ankali

I saw a customs agent at JFK once make some poor Italian woman cry. My husband and I still tell each other now and then, “Welcome to New York, go fuck yerself!”

    • mjude

      adorable ook. just love her.

    • sugarkane105

My ankles are shivering at the sight.

      • Heather

Yup. Plus she’s gonna have to go thru security barefoot… ew.

        • kimmeister

Not necessarily. At the airport in Vegas yesterday, we were behind a woman who had flat sandals on. As she prepared to go through the security screening, she whipped out little anklets that had a sneaker design printed on them so she never had to touch the ground in her bare feet.

          • decormaven

            Sign of the smart traveler.

        • Cousin_Rose

She probably flies enough to get “precheck”. Allows you to go through without taking off shoes.

      • Jackie4g

Yeah. It’s about 14 degrees around these parts. Bare anything is downright dangerous. Besides, I could never travel barefoot knowing that I’d have to walk on the airport floor. Goodness knows what’s been there before me.

    • Jmw

      Chic! Chic! Chic!

    • ovarB

Or perhaps she is just suffering from Bitchy Resting Face.

    • hmariec19

Eh, she’s probably just tired and hasn’t had her morning latte yet. Love this look. Emma, when you’re done with the shoes, send them my way, kthx.

      • Tatiana Luján

it is also so easy to get angry at airports.

        • hmariec19

Right? I’m pissed just thinking about being at an airport.

        • conniemd

Over Christmas vacation traveling from small airport on east coast to small airport on west coast. I had to be in four airports each way. It was made worse that we couldn’t land at my destination airport because of fog and got diverted to another small airport and on my way back I spent 6 hours at the Philadelphia airport waiting for the plane to be repaired. Thinking of airports makes me shudder at the moment, though thankfully the Philly airport had a really nice wine bar.

          • fursa_saida

I have slept in airports a few times. It is a truly harrowing (and FREEZING) experience.

    • Anna

Serving up pissed off at Dick Avery Jo Stockton, Emma rather feels like expressing herself right now. Adore those loafers.

      • Rhonda Shore

That’s PRECISELY what i thought!!! Jo Stockton!!!

    • MissDelaware

That’s how chic and simple I always want to look when flying, but alas, never quite manage …

      • Tatiana Luján

I can’t wear sunglasses indoors without feeling stupid, but that helps a lot.

        • ankali

Airports are often so bright, though; I think it’s one of the few indoor venues where wearing sunglasses doesn’t look douchey.

      • lunchcoma

Same. That’s how I’d like to look, but in practice, the best I can do is to be a tad more put together than the people traveling in their pajama bottoms.

        • MissDelaware

Although I always need socks. The idea of walking barefoot through the TSA squicks me out.

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

Is she wearing those shoes in for the Queen? :)

    • Emily Smith

Papped made me think of pap smear for reasons I can not explain and I was momentarily really perplexed by the comment.

      • hmariec19

I always think exactly the same thing.

      • acevedob

        Me too.

      • Youbeguilemenot

And paps smear reminds me of Masters Of Sex. Obvious withdrawals.

    • RedRaven617

I think she is tired and just wants to get where she is going.

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Pink nose and big sunglasses? That says tragic break-up to me.

      • marlie

I wonder if the shades are because of the flashes going off in her face.

        • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

I think you are probably right. But I like my story.

    • siriuslover

I do love her coat. Casual chic. Sometimes I wished I lived in a colder climate so I could make more use of trenches (I have a 20 year old black trench in my closet just going to waste :(

    • Dam_Angel

She is pensive because she just realized she failed to wear socks and in a moment security will ask her to remove her shoes and she will have to walk on a floor trampled by the great unwashed.

      • terpsichory

Serious question: are sock liners not a thing in America? Because they sure are in Europe and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t wear them in this kind of shoe. I ponder this question everytime stars are accused of going sockless and stank-feet.

        • algaechick

I’ve only tried one type of liner, no-show sock in the US, but it was bunched at my toes within 10 minutes. Since she’s European, hopefully she’s heard of and is using sock liners from her homeland.

        • Dam_Angel

Sock liners are ok but hideous if exposed.

    • elemspbee

      chic.

    • hunt3002

Going back to Brown. Classes started yesterday.

    • Jessica Freeman

She’s probably just pissed that she decided to fly into JFK hoping to avoid the paps in LAX and there those buggers were anyways.

She looks fantastic, great look for her.

    • Vickiefantastico

I know the bare ankles don’t quite go with the rest of the outfit, but somehow, that makes the look so chic to me.

    • Marie Sea

What brand luggage is that? Looks very nice but not LV.

      • MilaXX

        Tumi maybe?

        • Marie Sea

Nope, I’m a Tumi ho so I know that’s not Tumi. I’m thinking it is a very insider elite British brand. That I must own because I can’t stop buying matched sets of luggage.

      • decormaven

        Think it’s Cherchbi

    • imspinningaround

Give me every part of this outfit immediately.

    • MilaXX

Cute outfit but she looks ready to a cut somebody.

    • LaDonna Carpenter

This is the same look of dread that is on the face of every person in every airport across the country. It’s the Oh-My-Gawd-do-I-really-have-to-get-into-that-damn-flying-tube-again look. Can’t fault her for not being all smiles.

    • marlie

This is how I will dress to travel from now on. Cute!

    • KinoEye

J’adore! Give me everything you’re wearing, Emma, and no one gets hurt.

    • sagecreek

Very cute. And I recognize that face, it’s my “do not even think of talking to me” face. Very useful.

    • wildemoose

It was 10 degrees in New York this morning. I don’t understand how her feet aren’t FREEZING.

      • bellafigura1

She’s walking from the plane to the limo to the hotel. Do-able.

    • Kelly

Cute, but I hope this was taken last week — because Emma, it’s been like 15 degrees F in NY these last couple days. Socks, girl, socks! Even beatniks wore them.

    • Janet B

      Chic and so easy.

eta: the gorgeous coat is what I am missing in my outfit today (and the cold weather to necessitate such a coat)

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

A classic camel hair coat always qualifies as coat porn IMO.

    • megohd

It is offing COLD in NYC. Put some socks and boots on, Emma!

She looks adorable, but my feet are freezing for her.

      • Gatto Nero

She just walked from a warm limo to a warm terminal. She’s fine.

    • Bernadette

Not coat porn, but loafer porn for sure.

    • greymain

She is, in other words, a normal person ?

    • Imasewsure

Those shoes… I need them… and guessing that her bag is chuck full of Kafka, Sartre, Beckett, Nietsche or some other sort of uplifting reading!! You don’t get that serious look by reading Vogue on the plane!

    • ashtangajunkie

Loafer envy. And I’m not much for loafers.

    • Tracy_Flick

Very nice. It always weirds me out when people go to the airport in a thousand layers with scarf, hat, 10 pieces of jewelry, and high-heeled stank boots. That’s a lot of inconvenience to put up with in order to look sort of dumpy.

    • TwiddlyStun

That is the face I wear for headaches.

    • sweetlilvoice

I always admire those who can wear all black and not look furry. I have cats and own little black. If I am wearing black at all, I have to watch where I sit in the house as cats are magnetically drawn to black.

      • sugarkane105

As the owner of a fawn-colored corgi puppy, I feel your pain. I’ve started hanging the lint roller by the front door.

    • Little_Olive

Mu usual comment… I have trouble with warm top + no socks.

      • bellafigura1

Socks suck! I will do anything possible to avoid them!

    • Shawn EH

      Copping some Hathaway style.

    • Lily-Rygh

Super chic! Her shoe choice is giving me new life.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      *steals coat*

    • MannahattaMamma

She is thinking “maybe all those years of Hermione weren’t worth it, if a gal can’t just get through the 8th ring of hell known as JFK departures without having my damn picture taken.” (She’s wrong, as evidenced by: that coat, those loafers, her sunglasses, and the fact that she’s not carrying any luggage.)

    • VicD

That’s beatnik in Gucci loafers to you.

      • bellafigura1

My cup of tea precisely. I’m totally splurging on those come spring.

    • Jean Beaton Leavitt

I get the same way at the airport knowing of the travel ahead…just want to get it over with.

    • Mia Moreno

      I like it alot.

    • judybrowni

I doubt many beatniks could afford Gucci loafers, but otherwise on point.

      And cute.

    • guest2visits

Unhappy beatnik, I love your outfit!

    • quiltrx

      Love the shoes!

    • GillianHolroyd

      Timeless classic.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I think she just saw INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS and she fell under its folky melancholy mood.

    • Jn Cody

-1,000,000 points for the neck pillow. They don’t help and look so stupid dangling from arms or bags, I would happily shiv everyone who uses a neck pillow, even you Emma.

    • Sunraya

She often has a sourpuss. Poor dear. She suffers so.

    • amf0001

she’s at JKF? I thought for sure it was LA. It’s freezing here. I can’t believe she is so underdressed!

    • French_Swede

JFK is a miserable airport. I look bummed when I’m there, too.
