Emma Thompson at the National Board Of Review Awards Gala

Posted on January 08, 2014

Miss Emma continues her “wacky British aunt” schtick on the red carpet.

Emma Thompson attends the National Board of Review Gala in New York City.

She’s the fun aunt at the funeral.

It’s a shame. Someone ruined a perfectly good LBD by pairing it with a coat that doesn’t work well in photographs. Both the zipper and the lining are distracting as hell and frankly, the whole thing looks a bit beat up. Also, the shape’s working against the dress. If it’s a new coat or a loaner, it definitely doesn’t travel well. Keep the dress and the fun necklace, put her in something like, say… this, and for God’s sake, stop shoving the poor woman’s feet into Minnie Mouse shoes.

Oh, and burn that clutch. It looks like something you unsnap from a compartment in your luggage.

I understand the criticism of the coat, but this isn’t too bad for her. When the wackiness gets clamped down too much, she doesn’t look like herself and it’s just sad.

  • I mean, does she have another shtick?

    • Shawn EH

I’d imagine she could cut one dead when she felt like it; but she’s always trying to be so charming for the Americans. Let’s get her and HBC on the same RC!

  • Sarah

I want her to be MY aunt.

    • kimmeister

I could listen to her talk all day. (I just mentally heard that sentence in my head in her voice. What a dork!)

  • Rand Ortega

Auntie Em! She’s a twister! She’s a twister! (RIP Stephen Stucker)

  • @Biting Panda

Well, I’m glad she is so amused with herself. I’m still not on board with that hair color, and the ensemble is just :::this::::far away from being gloomy and dreadful.

  • charlotte

I just read what Meryl Streep said about her (it’s on Vulture):
“Not only is she not irascible, she’s practically a saint. There’s
something so consoling about that old trope, but Emma makes you want to
    kill yourself because she’s a beautiful artist, she’s a writer, she’s a
thinker, she’s a living, acting conscience. Emma considers carefully
what the fuck she is putting out into the culture! Emma thinks, “Is this
helpful?” Not, “Will it build my brand?” Not, “Will it give me
billions?” Not, “Does this express me? Me! Me! My unique and fabulous
self, into all eternity, in every universe, for all time!” That’s a
phrase from my Disney contract. I’m serious! “Will I get a sequel out of
it, or a boat? Or a perfume contract?”
Isn’t that marvelous? I’m not feeling her hair and outfit though.

    • The full speech and her reply are on the Vanity Fair website. It’s brilliant (and she took her shoes off).

    • demidaemon

I watched the Meryl Streep feature after the PRAS finale, and I realized that woman needs to be named a national treasure. Smart, talented, witty, hard-working, and doesn’t give two shits about the celebrity machine but gives a million shits about her work. LOVE HER.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Oh, Emma stop, stop! You’re way too young to be aging yourself up like this. You were more youthful looking in your Elinor Dashwood costumes.

    • Tom Shea

That was 20 years ago. So she was, indeed, more youthful.

  • Kate4queen

She looks more like my wacky British sister Amanda every day. Quite remarkable.

  • trisker

LOVE the clutch comment — perfect! laughed out loud!

  • hughman

Unlike other celebrities, it’s refreshing to clearly see the amount of fucks she gives.

  • mjude

being the fun aunt I am, now I want this look.

    • marlie

I’m the fun AND the cool aunt (how’d THAT happen?!), so I’m not quite ready for this outfit. 😛

    • Constant Reader

I’m the fun aunt, too, but I think the coat is problematic — and that we (and she) can do better. 🙂

  • Jessica Freeman

I cannot sign off on the hair style. NO Emma. NO.

  • marlie

My love for Ms. Thompson here is definitely clouding my judgement, because I want to say that this isn’t so bad. But… her haircut is too matronly, and the color is too light for her. BUT I love her, and I want to be her when I grow up. Also, anyone read the transcript of her awards acceptance from this event? Also, apparently Meryl Streep did her intro, and was also fabulous. Oh, to have been in that room…

    • stu844

They have her speech over on Jezebel. I love how she complained about the shoes and just took them off.

    • SugarSnap108

I cannot/will not be objective about Emma Thompson. She could sock me in the face with her ugly shoes and I will continue to love her.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I love Emma too, and I just want her to be her best self-so that means a more stylish cut and a more suitable color.

  • She’s far too young and pretty to be relegated to gramma wear. Stop it, Emma.

  • luludexter

with the exception of the zipper on the coat, I like this for her. and if you’ve read her speech, she took those darn shoes off anyway…

  • raininmai

My love for Ms. Emma is absolute, no matter what she wears. Such is her power. 🙂

  • Erica

Ms. Thompson is cold, and she ain’t taking off her coat and gloves for ANYONE.

  • Blame Kenneth Branagh for the shoes. He has that effect on his ex paramours…

  • teensmom99

She’s a year older than me and looks great but . . . ahem, . . more mature. Even my teen said so. It’s not her skin, etc: it’s how she dresses. I’m glad the uncles didn’t mention the necklace since my husband bought me something similar. As to the coat–can’t we give her a pass for this incredibly cold weather? That just looks like a coat to wear when it’s freezing not a fashion item. Can’t excuse the shoes and clutch, though.

  • filmcricket

Just went and revisited Julianna’s gorgeous coat, sigh. I don’t think it would have worked with this, but Lena Dunham’s gorgeous red leather one might have.

I love Emma Thompson and do not care how wacky she looks. However, I’d love it if she went back to her caramel hair colour.

    • ampg

Yes, that hairstyle in a caramel would be much less aging. I really do love her, though.

  • Danielle

Fuck it, her hair is cute.

    • manina

Love the hair and the make-up, and, she looks comfortable which is very her.

  • Sam Smith

Did anyone ever figure out the label for that fab red coat? I live in So. Fla. so I don’t need it at all, but I’m still interested to know its origins.

  • ErmengardeGreen

It’s like she’s angling to be cast as Camilla in a movie.

    • Sarah

Holy crap, that’s a scary thought. But so entirely possible.

    • StarburstLady

Or on a happier note, maybe it’s for an adaptation of Graham Greene’s Travels With My Aunt.

  • PastryGoddess

I hate her hair. there I said it

    • Pennymac

It looks like mine after a bad hot roller attempt. No Mas!

  • Cathy S

She has a fabulous smile. Please be my fun aunt, Emma!

  • MilaXX

Before I clicked the link I was thinking she should be wearing a red coat or some sort of bright print coat. As for the bag, these little satin evening bags loo cut in ads but always read free gift wit purchase on the RC. Stylist really should stop trying to use them

  • formerlyAnon

I am am thisclose to liking her so much she can do no wrong. I don’t love the hair color, but I don’t mind if she chooses a style that works for (many, many) women her age, even if most of them don’t have her resources. But really, the coat doesn’t photograph well and making sure she photographs well at a planned, staged photo opportunity is the job of SOMEbody on her payroll, I would imagine.

    • Shawn EH

It’s that giant zipper. They couldn’t have painted it black, or used some nice buttons or snaps instead?

    • Sabin

I think the hair style would actually not be so aging if the color weren’t blond. A nice, rich brown would be much less aging.

  • I love her so much, but I hate those shoes. They look like they belonged to the Queen Mum.

  • crash1212

Love her. Love the components of this outfit. The coat is killer to my eye, just doesn’t go with this dress. Everything else is A-OK to me. Even the Minnie Mouse shoes as I’m assuming she’s asserting her prerogative of comfort over style.

    • Sue_Asponte

Agree, I just love the coat. It’s not perfect with this dress, but it’s still pretty fab.

  • kat89

I actually like this on her. It’s the best she’s looked in a while. Not perfect, but better than usual.

  • jspark

That coat lining is an optical illusion. I thought she changed dresses half way through.

  • I have had an intense dislike for her ever since she mangled Hillary Clinton in “Colors.” But I just saw her in an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s THR Roundtable and she looked so fabulous and was so charming that I had to recalibrate my opinion of her. Everything about her was perfect, especially her hair and make-up. Never saw her look better.

  • decormaven

“It looks like something you unsnap from a compartment in your luggage.” So. Much. This.

  • Shawn EH

It tried to be a nice coat, but it’s actively fighting the much nicer dress.

  • Sunraya

OK, I don’t get it. Look how nice Meryl’s legs look with stockings on. And then look at these legs. You can see every bump, lump, mark and vein. I understand why people my daughter’s age don’t like stockings, but we older ladies know better. If she had some sheer hose on, this would have been a lot more polished.
Plus, can anyone please tell me how you can stand to wear shoes barefoot without hose?? The leather sticks, or it is hard in the cold weather and grabs at your skin on your feet. In the summer it smells. It is just not supposed to be!!

    I do adore her necklace!!

(Hiding in my room, now , feeling very old at 52.)

    • formerlyAnon

      I will cosign every word.

(Except the precise age, though we’re as close as makes no difference.)

    • Pennymac

Plus, stankfoot. And I’m about to turn 50. and some days, I feel all of the old that comes along with that damn number. Blurg.

      • Sunraya

Yes, stankfoot. Thank you for that apt description!!

  • DTLAFamilies

She needs a hair consult because that’s practically Brooke Astor hair. But she gets to cuddle up to Greg Wise every night, so what do I know?

  • quiltrx

Dress, necklace and hair are super-cute. I’ll spot you the rest THIS time, Ms Emma.

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I like her hair much better than the last time you featured her. And I have to say, I don’t mind her outfit here. Sure the coat could be nicer, but all in all, she looks good.

Or perhaps my unwavering love of her is skewing my opinion.

  • Trickytrisha

Good grief. At least she’s cheerful.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I hate her current matronly hair. The woman has gorgeous hair. Grow it out! Put it on display!

  • antonialee

She got that clutch for free with her $30.00 Lancôme purchase at Macy’s!

  • CT14

    I don’t like her hair.

I think better hair alone could kill the “crazy aunt” thing.

  • DeTrop

I wonder if this was a last minute invitation for ET.

  • TLJezebel

That hair color/style really ages her.

  • SouthernGirlRena

I was wondering what that long danglely thing was around her neck. They called it a necklace. I think I remember those from back in the day.

  • lillyvonschtupp

She looks like my old French teacher.

  • joything

MY wacky British aunt …wait, no, the niece I want to be when I grow up, is Helena Bonham Carter. Emma is the childhood girlfriend I had to hate because I loved her so much and could never quite tell her.

  • carnush

It makes me cry to think of how fabulous she COULD look in Juliana’s coat, a sharp pair of leather boots, and less outdated hair. The woman is gorgeous for god’s sake.

  • Ann VerWiebe

I knew if I liked the shoes T-Lo would hate them!

  • jen

I don’t care what she wears, she is a delight! And this actually seems very toned down for her. She married Kenneth Branagh in a purple ikat print dress in the 80s!!

  • MzzPants

Can somebody explain? To my eyes it looks like the dress changes color in the bottom two pictures. What am I not seeing?

  • H2olovngrl

She looks like Sharon Stone’s cookier, even CRAZIER sister and I kind of love it.
