Elizabeth Banks in Ralph Lauren at the Sundance Film Festival

Posted on January 23, 2014

You know what our favorite part of Sundance is?

Wait. That sounds weird. We don’t actually have a list of our favorite things about Sundance, with this next item at the top of it or anything. We admit that we sit around thinking and talking about silly stuff like heel trends on the red carpet or the specific color of jeans most favored by male stars this season, but we haven’t actually sat down and said “Let’s list all our favorite things about the Sundance Film Festival! I wanna go first!” “No, me!” We’re not quite that far gone yet.

But if we did have a list of favorite things about the Sundance Film Festival, then at the very top of that list would be the fact that it’s one of the very few events where stars are encouraged to dress weather-appropriate in non-Southern California weather.

How cute is that look?

Yeah, the posing she’s clearly being asked to do is weird, but we’re choosing to ignore it.

  • Diego!

She looks so cute! It’s a pitty she seems to be cold and a coat is required though…

  • How cute? How about, extremely. Perfect, appropriate, easy to wear, easy on the eyes, and gosh is she selling it. A bracelet or cuff might have been a nice added touch but I love it that there’s no necklace or anything to distract from the classic pattern of the tunic. Brava.

  • Anna

Poses are very strange. The first one is all, “OK, you have a crick in your neck and you’re trying to massage it out!” and then the last one is, “You’re very amused AND flabbergasted at our story, GO!”

But she is adorable, no complaints about the outfit, love her!

    • I took a survey today for someone’s phD, something to do with recognising emotions from facial expressions for neurotypical and ASD people, and some of the facial expressions on the videos looked very much like amused AND flabbergasted.

      • Anna

It is certainly possible to be both at once. For instance, I’ve been amused AND flabbergasted at a lot of the men’s fall collections and the Versace jewelry collection πŸ˜‰

        • demidaemon

I couldn’t get to amused because I was stuck at disgusted.

          • Anna

Understandable, the designers didn’t make it easy to move past that stage. It’s almost as if they all conspired to disgust and horrify us all.

  • Very cute. Although why the girls are busting out the lippy now instead of at the awards shows is beyond me.

  • MilaXX

So cute. I love a good tights/dress combo.
BTW does the cold weather make any one else want to drink ALL the hot chocolate? Preferably with ginger snaps? Even my morning coffee has now become a half coco/half coffee concoction.

    • jtabz

Yes! My morning green tea ritual has slowly morphed into a morning hot cocoa ritual.

      With marshmallows. Because … reasons.

      • MilaXX

my sister like marshmallows. I just like it extra creamy so I use almond milk and nondairy creamer

        • jtabz

(I do milk *and* marshmallows … don’t tell my waistline.)

      • conniemd

This cold weather makes me want to drink a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows AND whipped vodka as I’m watching TV at night.

    • mjude

what a good coffee idea. I am so over the polar vortex. as for the look, I too love the tights/dress combo.

      • MilaXX

Me too. Especially since I’ve run out of ginger snaps and I live on a small street which means my car is snowed in.

        • marlie

Me too. But I had to dig out my car to get to work today. I’m not look forward to playing parking tetris this evening…

          • MilaXX

Thankfully I don’t have to go out.

    • Anna

I hear you on the coffee and cocoa. My office has one of those Keurig machines so I mix half cocoa powder with the hazelnut-flavoured coffee. It’s like drinking Nutella. Speaking of which, that’s not a bad idea…

      • MilaXX

        ooh yum.

      • embers618

This is what I do! It makes my morning biscotti even more amazing πŸ™‚

        • Anna

Nice! I’ll sometimes add in an extra shot of espresso during those certain times when one needs to feel more human in order to interact with fellow co-workers. Not that I did that this morning.

          • embers618

Yum! Like a delicious mocha where all the non-coffee flavored liquid has been replaced with coffee… I could get behind that!

          • Anna

I know, right? Why bother with non-coffee flavoured liquids?

            I highly recommend!

      • Kim Elmore

Hot chocolate & Baileys. That is all.

        • decormaven

          Or coffee/hot chocolate/Kahlua.

        • MZ

Or hot chocolate & Rumchata, if you like a bit of cinnamon-y flavor

      • housefulofboys

Oooh, what an excellent idea, we have one of those and I’m going to go prepare one right this second! Thanks!

        • Anna

          Enjoy πŸ™‚

    • In_Stitches

I’ve gotten into tea brewed with ginger, topped with insane amounts of honey and milk. It started as a cure for a hangover consisting of all of the things I thought my stomach could handle and ended up an awesome drink.

      • An Indian friend pretty much prescribed that for me last year when I had a cold. It’s lovely.

      • jtabz

        That sounds amazing.

    • Jessica Freeman

I am currently hooked on hot chocolate with a shot of espresso in it, topped with an excessive amount of marshmallows.

    • ailujailuj

I envy that y’all are enjoying a real winter season…. can’t complain too much but I think my body physiologically misses the cold.

      • MilaXX

It was 12 when I woke up this morning. Now I don’t mind the change of seasons, but I could honestly live long and happy without 12 degree weather.

        • ailujailuj

without a doubt there is a big difference between cold and frozen! but the “coldest” it gets here is maybe 45 and only while I’m deep in slumber. I haven’t looked into it but I suspect a physiological response to the turning of the seasons – maybe like the circadian rhythm. I’d lived in CA for about 2 yrs but would initially answer “6 months” when people asked me how long I’d lived here–and the only logical response I could come up with is that my body hadn’t experienced the normal changing of seasons. I grew up in extreme weather so maybe that has something to do with it.

        • marlie

For real. I like the cold, but not BITTER cold.

        • SierraDelta

Minus 15 when I woke up this morning. Skipping the coffee and going straight to Bailey’s.

          • marlie

It’ll warm you up a lot faster.

        • Jacob Bowen

Yeah, the -28 windchill in Antioch, IL was LOVELY at 6:30. Ugh. And yet another day of indoor recess with my students in the room.

          • ailujailuj

you should have them review some of the editorials…. and report back.

          • Jacob Bowen

I’m sure they will LOVE Lupita! How could you not?

          • ailujailuj

kids have a great capacity for observation and truth. plus, they’re hilarious.

          • Jacob Bowen

Would HIGHLY debate their capacity for truth today…unless it was to their advantage. Today has been a rough one. Luckily I have only an hour left and they’re still at gym till for 15 more of those minutes.

          • ailujailuj

heh – by “truth” I meant – all the shit that you are thinking but are too polite to say out loud.
You are a saint, I’m sure. I know I couldn’t teach. damn kids.

          • Jacob Bowen

Oh I totally understand the “truth”, like “Mr. B, your hair looks like dogs licked it today” (I had hairspray in my hair and it was a BIT shiny).

          • ailujailuj

omfg you made me piddle. god love ’em.

          • Jacob Bowen

EVERY DAY. They are VERY quick witted.

          • Sartorial_She

Do you get combat pay for that?

      • alyce1213

        It’s tooooooo cold.

        • ailujailuj

I know… I know… I knew I’d get snowballs in the face. I’ll shut my mouth until Uncle Vortex is dead. πŸ˜‰ stay warm BKs…

    • After reading this thread, my morning coffee (cream, no sugar) suddenly seems woefully inadequate.

  • @Biting Panda

I just love her. She’s one of those celebs I want to have drinks with.

    • ailujailuj

I’d make out with her, too.

  • ralish

This is my favorite Sundance look so far. She looks so cozy and chic!

  • i love that she paired this dress with dark stockings and boots. It gives it a great Carnaby Street vibe that works really well for her.

  • Ginger

My only quibble is the color of her lipstick. Everything else if fantastic.

  • Beth

I like the dress but I wish she’d gone up a size. That print is very unforgiving – unless you want everyone to know the EXACT topography of your body.

    • kimmeister

Well, that’s what the gridlines are for, right? I think she must have Spanx or Spanx-adjacent on, because there is no sign of the tops of those tights anywhere.

  • Jessica Freeman

    Really love it.

  • CPK1

the posing is ridic. But she looks very cute and I love and covet her outfit (if it were available in a vegan variety)

  • ashtangajunkie

All kinds of adorable. I love her.

  • Janet B

Yum, I could use a big cup of hot chocolate. Or more sleep, or both.

My grumpy self is happy to see a cute (weather appropriate) outfit on Elizabeth.

  • Introspective

at the risk of sounding trite, the (style) odds are ever in her favor.

she rarely gets it wrong whether dressed up or down. love this look.

  • Jecca2244

i love her. i love her for being Effie Trinket in HG and I love that her small hometown in MA is in her twitter bio. What a gem.

  • Sam Smith

Lovely, but I feel like dress is a skosh too tight.

  • Kerri

Super cute! I totally love it.

  • luludexter

    totally awesome

  • marlie

I love this look! That’s adorable, head to toe.

  • marlie

TLo: I noticed that the tag says “Elizabeth Taylor,” and not “Elizabeth Banks.” πŸ™‚

  • Rand Ortega

    Super cute.

  • ailujailuj

LOVE HER. LOVE THIS. LOVIN SUNDANCE conversation – not because of the fashions but because everyone looks relaxed and engaged.

  • KinoEye

I LOVE this. I want all of it. Well played, Lizzy. I haven’t one quibble for you.

  • Jaeda Laurez

That’s so simple and cute, and I’m glad we get to see folks wearing boots like normal people in winter. Hair could have used some zuzh-ing, but that’s a small quibble.

  • Paula Pertile

    I love graph paper! Cute.

  • Imasewsure

Love it with the tights and love it without. Very cute look and perfect for our Lizzie!

  • Tracy_Flick

Love it, but maybe the go-go-ish boots are a little on-the-nose? I’d love to see this with motorcycle boots.

  • Monabel

    Dreadful hair.

  • Gatto Nero

This dress works so much better with the tights and boots than it does on the model.
    Well done.

  • allcapsERINN

    Love it!

  • OoOooo, that’s… quite good.

  • msdamselfly

Doesnt she remind you of Rachel McAdams?

  • vitaminC

    Elizabeth Taylor tag?

    • bellafigura1

  • lunchcoma

That’s adorable, and you’re right, it’s fun to see celebrities rocking winter-appropriate looks.

  • Kent Roby

Pose 1: “I have a terrible toothache”. Pose 2: “Just kidding; I feel GREAT!”. Pose 3: “I can Parker Posey with the best of them!”

  • Suse

A fab ’60s style long necklace would’ve been a cool addition.

  • Mia Moreno

She is consistently fabulous. I love, love, love her style.

  • Alloy Jane

I want that dress and I want it now. GIMME!

  • teensmom99

She wins the weather appropriate prize!

  • fungstyle

FYI gents, you have this mistagged as Elizabeth Taylor. I went to click for her past posts and discovered this.

  • Sunraya

I loved this dress on the runway, but i think she makes it look boring. She’s too “soft” for this.

  • DuBey2

Love the dress. BUT Ummmm, can we talk about the hair? Is anyone else sick of this “I went to sleep with my hair wet and now its sticking out all over” look? Its OK on shorter hair, but I don’t really like that style at this length. Maybe its just me?

  • GinaGeo

This is what about 90% of the young career women look like in MN. So, of course, I love it.
