Drew Barrymore in Vionnet at the People’s Choice Awards

And now… The Judging of Pregnant Women.

Drew Barrymore attends the 2014 People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles, California in a Vionnet white cady stretch T-shirt dress with a micro-plissé yellow tulle skirt paired with Roger Vivier sandals and Irene Neuwirth jewelry.

Vionnet Spring 2014 Collection

We really hate that top. There. We said it. We’re all for her seeking out comfort, but that looks like half of a pair of scrubs. Those sleeves are horrible. The skirt’s really pretty, although we wouldn’t have picked such a pale yellow for her if she’s appearing on stage. Basically, it’s half a decent outfit, helped along by hair, makeup and personality. She looks pretty, even if that top makes us recoil in horror.

    Some Simplicity pattern realness, there.

    • DaringMiss

Exactly! I judge all fashion by the standard “Could I have sewn this item myself?” This clearly qualifies.

    • Vtg Fashion Library

I’m getting a definite Walmart vibe. The the stripe across the middle of her fetus is uber unflattering.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I never would pick pale butter yellow for her. The essential shape is fine, and the fit is perfection.

  • http://www.luxperdiem.com/ Paige @ LPD

lets be real, if she was thin and not pregnant it would look great. BUT SHE’S SUPER PREGGERS. Honestly as long as she’s not stuffing susage feet into heels like kim K it’s a win for me. KUDOS

    • Sarah

Dunno if it would look great, exactly, because I share TLo’s loathing for that top – it is HIDDY. Pregnant wearer aside, it’s not doing the model any favors either. It’s just a damned smock. So, I agree that she looks comfy and I think the skirt is pretty, I think the dress is problematic from the jump.
ETA: I see the model’s top is different, but I think IT is ugly too.

      • marlie

I’m wtih you. I hate the outfit on the model possibly more than I do on Drew.

        • http://www.luxperdiem.com/ Paige @ LPD

thats def not the same top on the model.

          • marlie

I can tell, but I still think the outfit is pretty awful, either way.

          • suzq

The top on the model is worse.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Ehhh, I respectfully disagree with you. It looks worse because she’s pregnant, because maternity clothes can be challenging to begin with. But I don’t think this would look good on anyone.

    • Spreecord

She’s wearing heels and has got to be about 89 months pregnant at this point. I can’t bring myself to fault anything she’s doing with the rest of her body, because you know walking has got to be horrible in those things.

    • YoungSally

Still better than Lena D on most days.

  • TropiCarla

    lol @ the opening line.

An empire waistline would have made this MUCH better.

  • Diego!

I think when a woman is pregnant, shouldn’t be wearing that kind of top. It’s terrible. It makes her tits look flat and wide. It’s so awkward I can’t describe it. I love love love the skirt, hair and make up!

    • ConnieBV

That is a bad bra choice. Or no bra, possibly. Looks like she is wearing a camisole.

      • Introspective

she’s definitely taking cues from the girls cast regarding undergarments. which she shouldnt be.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

good point-Drew looked as if she needed a well-fitted, supportive bra to make this top look more flattering.

    • Jenna Marie

As a woman 8 months pregnant, this is my nightmare. Avoid this shape at all costs!

  • giddypony

BRA! Buy a decent freaking bra!

  • kimmeister

Yikes, not a flattering dress for pregnant ladies. The boxiness of the top makes it look like she is just big overall, rather than slim-but-with-child.

    • alliekat9090

What you said, Kimmeister. This dress is unfortunate. It makes her look like a boxy, overweight mannish woman instead of a pregnant lady .

  • marlie

Her makeup and hair look good. And I like the earrings!

But a question to the ladies who have been pregnant: Isn’t that one of the more uncomfortable spots on the belly to put the waist of the skirt? Aside from being hella unflattering, it seems like it would be really uncomfortable, too!

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

      Those earrings are gorgeous!

    • Zaftiguana

If the waistband isn’t super firm it might be okay, but I bet it was shifting all over the damn place all night either way because of not sitting at a good, narrow place. For comfort, convenience, AND aesthetics, she really should have gone empire.

    • Alyssa

I couldn’t stand any waistband to be on my pregnant belly…it makes the itchiness of the skin being stretched even itchier! I only wore below the belly waists…

    • formerlyAnon

If not stretched to be actually *tight* I never minded elastic over my midsection while pregnant. But I am on board with the unflattering. If I had to guess, she picked this because it’s a very size-variation-friendly look – it is going to fit and look about the same (not good) at just about any point in her last trimester, no matter how the baby bump mutates and whether she’s gained two pounds or eight in the last month.

  • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

The elastic going across the widest part of her bump makes my tummy hurt. Actually makes me feel a little panicky and I’ve not been pregnant for quite a few years. Pull it up and over or down and under. And yeah, agree about the top, and love the skirt. Just not there.

  • @Biting Panda

Hmmmm….well….in the interest of kindness, I will only say that while she is under no obligation to highlight NOR hide her pregnancy shape, she certainly didn’t do herself any favors trying to split the difference by making it as unflattering as possible. I also won’t say that on tv she sort of looked like a knocked up stick of butter. Because, kindness.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

      Laughing . . .

    • demidaemon

      You are so, so kind.

      • @Biting Panda

        #humanitarian

  • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ foodycatAlicia

Did none of the ladies at this event bother blending their foundation down their necks?

    • marlie

Maybe they knew noone was going to be watching?

  • lillyvonschtupp

How can you be 40 and adorable? Look above.

    • Sarah

She’s not 40. She’s 38. (As am I and know it because we’re the same age). But she’s cute, for sure. I always think when she starts to look old, I’ll have to take a look at myself and see if I need help.

  • Mrs. Julien

She looks comfortable and she’s not posing with her hands cradling her stomach. I’d call it a win.

  • hughman

    Leave Tori Spelling alone.

    • decormaven

      Dying here!

    • DebbieLovesShoes

Hahaha… my family is sleeping as I read this, so my laughter is confined to my shoulders shaking! Thanks for making me laugh AGAIN hughman.

  • MoHub

    Sad bra.

    • Fordzo

      What bra?

      • MoHub

It’s there; you can see it if you look hard. It’s just not doing its job, so she’s sagging and her nips are popping.

  • sugarkane105

It looks pretty in the backstage pics, but onstage it’s all shot to hell.

  • LGenz

I hate the idea that all pregnant women need to wear empire waist gowns but why would the ONLY area of interest on your outfit be designed to emphasize the ONE thing you no longer have?

  • MilaXX

The top is pretty bland, but in terms of formal maternity wear since celebs don’t seem to every shop at like Pea & the Pod for their RC appearances, I thought this was okay. Hair/makeup and a great pair of earrings are doing all the heavy lifting though.

  • SewingSiren

Paper bag waist is not the way to go when you’re pregnant. If ever.

    • kimmeister

Heck, it’s not particularly flattering when you’re 36-24-36.

  • 3boysful

From the bust up view in the thumbnail, I was prepared to dash to Drew’s defense. Then I scrolled down.

  • Jessica Freeman

The break in the dress is landing in the wrong spot as well. The skirt had much potiential, but pairing it with a glorified white t-shirt was a big, fat NO.

  • KT

Ohhhh no. She’s making the mistake of trying to cover up her pregnancy to the point where you can’t tell that she’s pregnant — she just looks fat. I know that’s super mean, and I’m not actually calling her fat, but that’s the effect here. Agree that that shirt is AWFUL and also is she not wearing a bra…??

Also I don’t usually mind when things are out of season, but this is so casual and summery that it looks like she’s about to twirl around a damn maypole.

  • Sally Spannagle

The shape doesn’t embrace her pregnancy at all — she just looks like a chubby gal like myself in that dress!! :-D

  • EEKstl

Pregnant Sisterwife who was given permission to leave the compound to present at the People’s Choice Awards.

  • deelup

I LOVE that Drew isn’t following the celebrity trend of “wear clothes so tight during pregnancy you can see the baby’s veins.”

  • NYCGlamourpuss

No, Girl Crush, just no. There are many, many flattering and pretty things that pregnant women can wear, as we saw with Natalie Portman a few years back. What you are wearing is not one of them.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I can see why she went with it, but there’s got to be better options out there.

  • http://www.tumblr.com/tumblelog/lastbutnotleast janinedm

I like the top. It’s not exciting, but I feel like it’s an open invitation, a blank canvas to have something interesting happen at the neck. I would skip the model’s death by handbag and go with some sort of statement necklace. I’m getting to the point where the unending lack of accessories on these people is making me angry. I can forgive it when it’s a CW star who is not famous enough to have anything lent to her, but this is a Barrymore. Grab one of Ethel Barrymore’s damned sapphires and put it on your body somewhere. The fact that she’s chosen all clear accessories somehow makes me more over it.

  • Violina23

Her boobs look sad and her belly looks sad. I feel sad….not the best Preggo choice, IMO

  • MzzPants

What she really wanted was to stay home in her raggedy fleece robe, park it on the sectional, turn on some rerun, and munch graham crackers with a two liter of ginger ale. But. Mama’s got to make that cash.

  • MichelleRafter

I would have hiked up the skirt so it looked like an empire waist dress instead of having the waist at the widest part of her body. Love the skirt color though, and the red lip is dynamite.

  • suzq

I’ve been pregnant twice and always managed to look pretty gosh darned good. Here are my short list of rules:
    1. A baby is hanging from your body where your waist should be. So forget about your waist for the next 6 months or so.
    2. Dresses that tie or adjust in the back are the most flattering. Show the belly. Emphasize what you have left of the small of your back.
    3. If you must have a line in front, have it go along the top of the belly, under the breast.
    4. Speaking of…support those breasts. Please! They’re bigger than they used to be.
    5. Believe it or not, flowy silhouettes are not your friend.
    6. When wearing shirts with skirts or pants…don’t fight it. Shirt tails out and covering the belly.
    7. No exposed belly unless you’re under 30 or a gansta rapper.

  • crash1212

I love her, but I hate this outfit. All of it. There are comfy and cute clothes out there for the preggos…this ain’t one of them.

  • Trickytrisha

She’s practically unrecognizable in the first pic. As for the dress, it’s like she decided to pull a Lena Dunham and look as awkward as humanly possible. Too sad, ’cause she’s a fave of mine.

  • cocohall

I’m giving her a pass as she seemed to have launched herself from a couch and gotten something clean over her swollen belly just to honor a good friend. She rallied on behalf of Adam Sandler (whose movies I generally dislike, but there is something sweet about hiim none-the-less – I just can’t hate on him). They looked genuinely happy to see each other and in a show that was pretty much devoid of any genuine emotion (I won?! I had NO idea, but that must be why I’m here in the front row!) it was sweet to see. That and the Jennifer Hudson award for her and her sister.

  • Sara Hottman

That top destroys her boobs. I am pained for her.

  • therealkuri

OK, so I’ve never been pregnant to that stage and likely never will, but do you really want your waistband to be mid-belly like that? Don’t you want it either under or over? It just looks so damned uncomfortable like that.

  • Tracy_Flick

That is exactly the wrong place for a waistband on a maternity outfit. Yikes. I think if it were moved up to above-belly/under-boobs, and her girls had some decent support, it would have been a lot better.

  • MaggieSays

This is just not a dress that looks well unless it is pinned and draped just so. It’s not a real life dress, even though it screams “COMFORTABLE!!”

  • Danielle

Hey, any maternity dress that doesn’t look like she ripped it off of a curtain rod (looking at you, Kim Kardashian) is fine in my book.

  • ShaoLinKitten

I didn’t recognize her, but I have to say, it’s refreshing to see a celebrity who looks the way most of us looked when we were pregnant–bloaty, retaining weather everywhere. That said, the top is doing her no favors at all.

  • jen

Oh Drew. Girl, what happened to you?

  • sagecreek

As a pale gal myself, no. White top? Never. EVER EVER EVER.

  • Call me Bee

I like the skirt, and Drew is goofy enough to wear it–but jeez that wiastline. Should be higher. As it is, she doesn’t look PG, she just looks pudgy.

  • surfergirl70

When I was pregnant, no way in hell would I have ever worn an elastic waistband around the biggest part of the belly. When you’re really starting to show, you either wear something with an empire waist, or you wear something tunic-y that drapes over the belly and hides the fact that you’ve pushed your waistband down under your belly because it’s much more comfy that way. I love Drew, but this outfit is just silly.

    • J. Preposterice

Yes. Over the belly or under the belly, not around the belly. Around the belly you look like you are a beachball on top of stilts.

  • ashtangajunkie

Terrible, but my love for Drew prevents me from having any reaction beyond “OMG Drew! I love Drew!”

  • aquamarine17

she doesn’t look like Drew to me. now that i’ve gotten used to how pregnant women dress nowadays (form-fitting), I think she’d look great in something black and tight with sleeves.

  • teensmom99

I think she needs to wear real maternity and not just larger sizes.

  • Miss wks

I’ve given birth twice and there is no way on gawds green earth I woulda ever stepped outta the house dressed in THAT….

  • LeelaST

Why wear a skirt? This, if ever, is the time to wear a pretty unstructured dress or go Bohemian! Hate yellow. Love her.

  • E. D.

    Needs a better bra.

  • LaSylphide

It makes her look dumpy instead of pregnant. But nothing can detract from that pretty face.

  • rondele

Oh god, who dislikes Drew enough to dress her in that? How unfortunate. She is so beautiful and that dress is fugly from beginning to end. I like the earrings, but even hair and makeup need work.

  • veronkimo

The weird detail of the skirt at the top is crazy unflattering! Wow, and the makeup is really bad.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

It looks as if the skirts look lovely when she walked. I wish that she had paired it with a top that had a bit more style and polish.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m good. She’s so pregnant her face doesn’t look like her anymore. Under those circumstances, I say let her wear whatever she wants. Go, Drew.

  • Hilda Elizabeth Westervelt

    Oh my eyes…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1180174329 Elizabeth Phillips SC TSu

It might have worked if the waistline had been raised to just under the bust.

  • Kimi Colney

why…when you have all the choice in the world…why..

  • MannahattaMamma

Horrifying. Anyone who has ever been that pregnant knows that a waistline like that – when you HAVE NO WAIST – is, as my kids would say, an epic fail.

  • amaranth16

Her hair is so shiny and healthy from all the hormones but GOD her roots look dreadful.

I don’t think the color is that bad, but that waistline placement is one of the saddest things I’ve seen a pregnant lady wear.

  • Areilles

I thunk the entire outfit looked awful on TV: and the way she kept touching her hair said she didn’t feel good about how she looked

  • DuBey2

Worst ever for Drew, IMO. And no matter Where you put that waistline, it doesn’t help the neckline or the horrible sleeves and color.

  • Ann VerWiebe

I don’t think she’s wearing a bra, which, in this case, is not the correct choice. Now’s the time to hoist the ladies!

  • greyhoundgirl

Clearly, she’s just trying to get through the last weeks as well as she can. I always like maternity clothes that show the belly rather than try to hide it. I feel for her–she put clothes on, she’s up there–good enough.

  • H2olovngrl

Ohhh…she’s at “that” stage of her pregnancy. Don’t worry, Drew. It gets better.
