Cover Girl: Allison Williams for InStyle UK Magazine

Posted on January 06, 2014

Look, InStyle UK, we get that she’s as dull as room-temperature oatmeal, but that’s no reason to go and digitally mutilate her.

“Girls” star Allison Williams covers the February 2014 issue of InStyle UK Magazine in Miu Miu photographed by Doug Inglish.

It’s bad enough the face looks like a paper mask taped over someone else’s head, but we’re pretty sure her hands can’t actually do that.

Miu Miu Spring 2014 Collection

Fabulous coat, though. We wish she dressed like this more often. Then again, it’s likely she’ll see that cover and recoil in horror, forever associating stylish Miu Miu coats with wrist mutilations.  Sad, really.

Cathy Cambridge should wear this coat.

    • leahpapa

You know what they say about great minds :) Though I feel she – like the Dowager Countess – would remark that it’s a bit racy for her tastes.

      • barbarienne

But she might wear this coat in different colors. Imagine it in navy blue with beige.

        • SugarSnap108

I am imaging, and loving, that color combo. These colors are little too newborn-onesie for me.

          • lrober03

What if Miu Miu made a miniature version for George then? Cathy can wear the navy and they’ll be matching

    • JulieTy

      Dos she wear non-British designers?

      • Danielle

If it’s in a British magazine it counts, right?

    • myristica_fragrans

princess mary would be more likely to wear that coat than kate.

    • kimmeister

I was thinking Elle Fanning myself.

    • MishaFoomin

      *I* should wear this coat.

  • leahpapa

Serving up Stepford Wife/uncanny valley unrealness. Nice coat, though – it’s what I imagine Cathy Cambridge would wear on a very tasteful acid trip.

  • Sarah

And needless neck shortening, too, no? She seems truncated up top. And I loathe that coat, but for her, it’s downright zesty, so I give it a pass.

  • foodycatAlicia

Poor girl has a dislocated shoulder she’s trying to reduce AND YOU MOCK. You beasts. Coat porn!

  • MilaXX

Unless she’s got a side gig as one of the contortionist for Cirque du Soleil, that right arm is all kinds of wrong. Cute coat though

  • ballerinawithagun

Great coat. Whoops, put the mannequins hands on backwards again…

    • annmouse

I don’t know – unless I am weirdly double jointed – and I don’t think I am, the right arm seems fine to me. It’s not exactly the most comfortable pose in the world but it’s doable. It’s the weirdly morphed plastic left wrist and hand that I have a problem with – that doesn’t even look like a hand.

      • marlie

The hand isn’t “put on backwards,” but it’s rotated rather far, and even just from trying it at my desk here, I imagine that it would get really uncomfortable/painful really quickly. In other words, no one stands like that, ever.

      • dalgirl

I agree-WHAT is the deal with the left hand? It looks like what I drew in kindergarten.

  • Kiltdntiltd

Its an awesome coat. It does seem though that they have gone way out of their way to insure she looks awkward, ill-suited to the clothes, and physically abused on top of everything else.

    • demidaemon

Is it supposed to be a visual metaphor of her life, perhaps? Inquiring minds are wondering.

  • gabbilevy

Those aren’t my colors, but if that coat came in say… forest green with blue accents, I’d be all. over. that.

    Poor Allison.

  • Mary Carpenter

It looks like she has two right hands. Anybody else see that?

    • SugarSnap108

Actually, the supposed left hand looks closer to a flesh-colored spatula to me.

    • embers618

Yeah, it looks like they photoshopped a different left hand, from the wrist down, but accidentally grabbed a right hand instead.

    • Fanny_Trollope

      It’s not even a left hand. It’s a plastic slab. It’s shudder-inducing.

  • SugarSnap108

Their “Allison Williams Talks” tagline is a great fit. It *is* remarkable for a paper doll to talk.

  • mommyca

Beautiful coat! Anyways, I keep wondering what they were going for when photoshopping the hand like that… Did it look fat so they had to twist it in an impossible angle? Weird!

  • ashtangajunkie

I want to believe that they are somehow contractually obligated to mention blondes in ALL CAPS if they put a brunette on the cover. “Also, BLONDES. Blondes are EXCITING. Allison Williams in a coat, but BLONDE WOMEN TOO. Fashion is for everyone.”

    • International Model

      So much agreement.

    • decormaven

      Dying here! That is spot-on.

    • foodycatAlicia

But in the interests of unbiased reporting they went for the only 3 blondes in the world who are as dull as Allison Williams.

      • ashtangajunkie

        Preach, sister.

  • RussellH88

Am I missing something? I don’t see any impossible wrist action.

    • SugarSnap108

Nope, it’s not impossible as far as I can tell. However, you do have to very deliberately externally rotate your whole arm to achieve this look, which seems like an awkward, unnatural thing that no one would actually do.

      • bingo

as someone pointed out above it’s the thumb on the bottom of the left hand (whose palm is facing inwards). just, wrong.

  • alyce1213

Ooh, I don’t like the coat — prolly the easter egg colors, not well used. Maybe in other colors.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

What IS it with InStyle fucking up all the body parts on the lady stars?

And I hate the coat. I like a color blocked coat just fine. I just can’t stand blocking in “after dinner mint” colors.

  • International Model

Diana Aragon, Blake Lively, Cat Deeley and Allison Williams all in one magazzzzzzzzzzine? Good god, UK. Get yourself another cup of tea and wake up.

    • twigg

That’s a whole lot of beige for one magazine.

  • Kent Roby

She needs a smile and a wind machine to put a little life into that cover.

  • marlie

The coat is gorgeous, but it really does look like they superimposed a digitally created version of her face onto the body.

  • @Biting Panda

“OKAY, I’ll try to show some youth and personality on the red carpet. You don’t have to twist my arm.”

  • Janet B

    Very nice coat

  • LeelaST

At first glance I thought this was a cleaned-up Kristen Stewart. Then I saw the creepy mannequin hand.

  • uprightcitizen

I just turned my right hand that way and grasped the wrist with my other hand … without any difficulty or even strain on anything. Am I built weird or something? (I’ll grant you, it’s an odd choice for photos. Anything that looks contorted should go in the “no” pile.) Her face looks like one of the paper dolls my sister had as a kid. And somehow she managed to look pissed and bewildered at the same time. Quite a feat, that.

    • embers618

I don’t think the criticism was of the right hand, it’s that the thumb appears to be on the bottom of the left hand.

      • bingo

great catch. T&L didn’t specify and you’re definitely correct.

    • kimmeister

I can do it without a problem too. I do have elbows that hyperextend, but my shoulders & wrists are normal. It’s just an awkward-looking pose.

      • demidaemon

It is a possible pose. It just seems odd that the editors would pick a pose for the cover photo which everyone is going to fixate on rather than the celebrity, taglines, or clothes being featured.

  • mjude

    I do like the coat.

  • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Dianna Agron’s name pops more than hers. She should really sue somebody.

  • kmk05

…how did they manage to make her look like Kristen Stewart?! No, Photoshop people, they are not the same!

  • tereliz

Love every coat in this collection. Allison has never looked more her age. I mean that in a good way.

  • decormaven

If you twist the wrist the other way, does a gum ball pop out?

  • KT

That’s an awesome coat, but I’m not in love with the colors. Also, why would they fuck with her face? Her face requires no fucking.

  • crash1212

“Digitally mutilate”…hee hee! Actually, my hands can do that – maybe I’m a freak. In any event, she looks great in that coat.

  • Chartreusite

That coat is to die for. She could really work that kind of style if she really wanted to.

  • elemspbee

    Stunning jacket! Wasted on her.

  • kategs

ummmm my wrist can do that. yoga ya know…

  • macwell

That’s just too freaky for words. Does creative proof their mockups? This is almost unacceptable.

  • ShaoLinKitten

My wrists can do that without much strain. The hands look fine to me. The coat is beautiful. I agree that her face looks odd.

  • kim bunchalastnames

okay, how many of us just tried to put our hands in that position? if so, raise your hand. if you still can.

  • Dreamwr8tr

It looks like they melted her left hand. BAD PHOTOSHOP. Love the coat on her though.
