Claire Danes in Vionnet at the 2014 SAG Awards

Posted on January 20, 2014

So here’s what we think happened with this look. Claire sat her style team down, showed them pictures from her Emmys red carpet appearance in September and said “See this? NOT GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN, DICKWEEDS. Anyone tries to pull that shit with me I cut them, get it?”

It worked:

“Homeland” star Claire Danes attends the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California in a Vionnet crêpe-de-chine mermaid dress with inlaid panels and blue paillette embroidery on tulle accessorized with Forevermark jewelry.

We’re only so-so on the dress – although it is a really interesting design and that goes a long way with us – but  it’s really the overall look here that makes us happy. She looks dramatic and sexy and glamorous as hell. That’s one killer hair and makeup job.

Oh my sweet god, that hair. That is Girl On Fire hair. That is –

I’ve got nothing remotely witty to say. I’m just going to sit here and quietly, feverishly adore.

      • Vickiefantastico

I love the hair, yes, but please someone tell me how she grew so many inches since September. I realize it’s extensions, but man, they look natural!

        • FancyPhilly

Her hair was pinned up in a faux bob in September.

      • Jecca2244

ohhh now you just made me want to go home and finish Hunger Games book 3!!

    • AnnaleighBelle

I love her hair color (minus the roots). It’s a pet peeve how women celebrities seem to think that “go blonder” is always the right answer. Some contrast between skin and hair is usually more flattering.

Her most gorgeous accessory was hubby Hugh Dancy.

      • Barbora

        Agreed and love your avatar!

        • AnnaleighBelle

Have you seen the new trailer yet? Yowza! I’m wishing my life away until February 28th.

          • muzan-e

There’s a new trailer?! … and I have to wait ’til late February for the second season.

Man, they giveth and they taketh away.

            • AnnaleighBelle

Seriously, youtube the trailer. There’s one part where Lecter throws himself against a door. I weep. Mads Mikkelsen is painfully hot.

            • muzan-e

.. aurgh. Thank you so much. The turning around – throwing himself shoulder-first right goddamn at that door –

I need to stop now before I derail this awesome thread even further. Aherm. But thank you, and he seriously is.

            • AnnaleighBelle

And the Stand By Me rendition. And Will’s final statement. Bryan Fuller is a genius.

              I’ll stop now.

          • Barbora

I did. So excited for season 2.

          • fursa_saida

That trailer destroyed me. I could not be more pumped for season 2.

      • Tatiana Luján

Yes to contrast between hair and skin!

      • ailujailuj

the other benefit she’s had to all the back-and-forth coloring… besides landing a beautiful color… is it’s dried out her hair a bit so it’s fuller and whispier and ready to dance.

    • hughman

She looks great. And I love all the little paillettes that are all “FUCK YOU BITCHES. WE’RE OUT!”

      • muzan-e

.. thanks to you, TLo and Claire Danes, I have learned a wonderful new word today. *beams*

    • Aidan B

All of the coloring here is perfection; her new hair color is so complimented by that dark blue. Not in love with the shape and detailing of the dress, but the overall color scheme was spot on.

    • Little_Olive

I absolutely love it. The color scheme is perfect for her; she is really made for some depth in both hair and clothing. Attagirl.

    • KingCrazy

The dress is strange, but damn, her hair and makeup are gorgeous.

    • schadenfreudelicious

Sorry, not on board with that makeup, maybe it’s just my monitor but it looks mighty garish and harsh to me…

      • 3boysful

Thank you! She just does not have the coloring (or the skilled make-up artist) for the smokey eye. To me her head looks like hooker with a great blow-out.

      • alainalynn

I agree. Her eye makeup looks like she rubbed her eyes and smudged it.

    • ailujailuj

heh – love the commentary. been awhile since I’ve heard “dickweed” in a conversation about high fashion.
I love the dress – very unique, all the shiny colored x-acto blades contrasted with the chiffon just looks fantastic on her. And she’s all grows up with that dark, sultry eye and glittery sparkle. DAYUMMM… I bet she had good sex that night.

    • Dandesun

It doesn’t seem to be put together quite right. There are elements there that I really like but the overall look has me cocking my head like a dog hearing a high pitched whistle.

    • ashtangajunkie

Dickweed. YES. I always use ‘dipshit’ because the ‘p’ and ‘t’ make it very satisfying to say. But dickweed is a good one. And Claire Danes looks hot.

    • Daisy Walker

The only thing I like is the color. The sheer top of the dress doesn’t fit right in any photo, those fabrics don’t work together (light vs. heavy) and wtf with the belt? Plus her roots look awful. I don’t get it.

      • Mismarker

I really dislike the way the sheer part is folding in on itself and giving the illusion of cleavage that starts just under her clavicle.

        • Daisy Walker

          Exactly. I can’t unsee it.

        • Kimbolina

Yup. All I could think of was drag queen contour make-up to give the illusion of cleavage.

        • kimmeister

Reminds me of the cheesy t shirts that have drawn on bikini bodies.

    • TAGinMO

The dictionary illustration of “JBF hair.”

Come to think of it, that looks like a JBF smile too.

    • lunchcoma

Her hair looks great, but what’s going on with the neckline for that dress? It’s all wrinkly, and not in a way that looks intentional.

      • conniemd

I’d have liked the dress a lot better without the wonky black sheer. Just make it strapless or a narrow black strap.

        • lunchcoma

That, or make the shiny bits go all the way to the neck! There’s already a lot going on with that dress. No need to add another texture.

          • makeityourself

Yes, BUT I believe we can all be grateful for the nude chiffon lining. At first I thought we were in for another see-I’m-not-wearing-any-underwear dress and I was going to have a tantrum.

    • filmcricket

Her face looks amazing. Minus the roots, so does her hair. Hate the dress.

    • charlotte

I think she looks terrible. The makeup isn’t even bad per se, but it looks bad on her. And the wrinkly dress…nah, I’m not buying this.

    • @Biting Panda

This looks better in stills, than it did in motion. She looked near a hot mess, on TV. Still, I’ll take bold and brash, over pale and tepid, any day.

    • berkeleygirl

Not crazy about the dress, but am ecstatic that she’s darkened her hair… I’ve never liked her as a blonde – too cold. This shade, though, is warmer and more youthful – just incredible.

      • sarah jacobs

But she IS a blond. I knew her when she was a little kid. She had light blond hair then.

        • jilly_d

Tons of people have blond hair as kids though, and it darkens. My hair was practically white until I was 4, and has gotten gradually darker ever since. I have a lot of family and friends who had the same thing happen. It’s not out of the ordinary. Plus, this looks so much better on her IMHO. Much like Christina Hendricks (a natural blonde) looks better with red. Sometimes we are not blessed with the best hair for our complexion.

          • ailujailuj

so true. my complexion has also changed – from easily tanned to pale. what goes with pale???

            • demidaemon

Something saturated, like a deep chocolate or red, like Christina Hendricks’ hair.

            • ailujailuj

yes – I can see that with other women —– but I think I just might try it on myself! thx…

            • demidaemon

              No problem!

            • KinoEye

Demi is spot on! I’ve always been ghostly pale and have dyed my hair every color of the rainbow. Deep, saturated red (few shades darker than my natural color) always gets the most compliments. I’d highly recommend, especially if your eyes are green or blue.

            • ailujailuj

mine are both green and blue so… I might go auburn.

    • nannypoo

And she is the woman who would cut them, too. I love this.

    • SRQkitten

From the neck up, she looks great. That dress looks like she’s showing a lot of slip, I don’t know if a different color than that nude fabric would have looked better.

    • Zaftiguana

In the words of Sassy Gay Friend – “P.S., this is the best your hair has ever looked.”

      • Jacob Bowen

“I can’t believe you were going to get it wet!” SO PERFECT!

      • ShaoLinKitten

Except for the inch of dark roots showing so clearly… And then the Sassy Gay Friend would look at the camera and say, “She’s a stupid bitch.”

    • nowlo

Head looks great. Dress is just bizarre. It doesn’t look so bad here, but there are images with the skirt spread out that make it look like two dresses were frankensteined together.

    • ojosazules

Strange sort of dress, but she looks beautiful.

    • Sara

I wish the entire dress had been blue (or just two tones instead of the three here) but yeah, she looks like sex. That hair color is magic.

      • ballerinawithagun

Exactly what I was thinking, if only that nude cheap looking slip thing were royal blue or blue violet it would have been wonderful.

    • Lilah

I love this dress. It’s interesting and appropriate and looks gorgeous on her.

    • teensmom99

      Yup. And the dress flatters.

    • melanie0866

Stand up straight!! Put your shoulders back!

    • Trickytrisha

Such an improvement. Face and hair are fantastic, dress is… interesting.

    • Dana

It’s amazing what hair and a dress can do. Compared to the Emmys, she’s lost about five years.

    • jilly_d

I wish the fit on top was better, but WHO CARES BECAUSE THAT HAIR. I WANT IT ON MY HEAD.

    • Nika E

Her hair is glorious. GLORIOUS I SAY!

    • frannyprof

I don’t love it! The netting at the neckline is weird and she looks pregnant, not that there’s anything wrong with looking/being pregnant, but…

      • Fordzo a.k.a. Fancy Mukluks

I was going to say that when a woman makes THAT big of a change, I speculate like crazy that there are other big life changes happening, too. I was wondering if she was having another bebe. But that would mean she had sex with Hugh Dancy a second time, and I’m uncomfortable with the idea. In fact, I’m straight-up jealous.

    • Pennymac

The black illusion netting is giving her the illusion of over-developed pectoral muscles. I wish the neckline was anything other than black mesh. Hair and make-up are straight up sex.

    • Stefanie Argudo Mackenzie

Love the hair and makeup, but the ‘dress’. It’s a like futuristic bib apron..

    • VicD

      Frankendress

    • quiltrx

The head looks fabulous! And I like that the dress is risky but not way out in cray-cray land.

    • Kelly

That Emmy hair and dress were horribly painful. This dress is pretty ugly on its own (a black apron over a peach-colored sheath? Is that what we’re looking at?) but the whole effect is such an improvement over September that I feel like jumping up and down on the couch.

    • Lynn Landry

      She looks better than ever.

    • StillGary

Beautiful — just a minor little note — it looks like she’s plucked some scales off of the dress, but it is def interesting!

    • SewingSiren

This dress requires a PhD in FASHION, Claire is still working on her GED.

    • MilaXX

I like this look and her hair has never looked better. This may sound weird, but I’m getting a bit of an Ann Margret sex kitten vibe from this look, That is the hair color she should always keep.

    • AnneElliot

I like her hair color, but cannot approve of the roots. It’s the SAG awards!! Make time and get those roots done!!

And I dislike the flesh-toned side panels. It’s a bit of a Frankendress for me.

    • ThesisMonkey

I like the shiny blue of this dress, but that’s it. It’s just messy, and those flesh-colored (?) side panels (?) are atrocious.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

The dress I’m not sold on, but like my fav uncles, I love her hair and make-up,and she looks as if she feels like a million dollars!

    • sunflower

I love the dress.. I am crazy?

      • supri_supri

I’m crazy too then! The tulle at the neckline photographed terribly, looked like weird cleavage shadows unfortunately. But I love the mix of textures and colors, especially with the super sexy hair and makeup.

    • CeeQ

SUCH an improvement! Loved it head to toe. Except the tilted head thing….

    • St. Ace

Just skimming through the thumbnails on the front page, I seriously thought for a second Uncles T Lo had written Claire Danes in Vomit….

    • Diego!

I agree guys, the dress is so so, but hair and make up are flawless here. She looks fabulous! You rock that RC Claire! :D

    • sherrietee

From the neck up she looks great. That dress hurts me.

    • katiessh

i would have liked it better if it was all panelled. why are there weird things on the side like that? i do love her new hair

    • decormaven

This is a great look for her. Her hairdress and MUA should tape this photo next to the mirror; the darker hair tone is so much more flattering.

    • marlie

Her hair and makeup look good, though I think her eyes are a little too smokey. The dress is beautiful from the front – that’s really gorgeous detailing, but I’m not sure about the sides.

    • Mary Featherstone

I love her with darker hair!! Wow.

    • Jecca2244

      that IS her hair color.

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby

Lovely. This hair suits her so much better

    • KinoEye

This is the best I’ve seen her look in a long time. Light years ahead of the ghost Betty Draper look. That HAIR. And I unreservedly love the dress. Perfect for an intelligent, sophisticated and slightly unusual actress like her.

    • cocohall

Are hair extensions heavy? Poor dear cannot hold her head upright in these photos. But she is so improved overall that it is hard to believe this is the same woman from the Emmys. Claire’s got her groove back.

    • Carolyne

She looks so beautiful. I’m with T&L on the dress though. Maybe if the metalic-looking mesh replaced the hideous slip-colored parts in the sides?

    • E. D.

The neckline (where the paillettes start) seems low. Like the hair.

    • crash1212

I hope she keeps this hair color forevermore.

    • Tracy_Flick

Very Mary Kate and Ashley. Raccoon eye make-up and expensive messy clothing.

    • Erica_Vuitton

THIS is her hair color. Seriously the best she’s ever looked in her life from the neck up. The dress looks like a PR contestant had this wonderful idea for a “fabric treatment” but was only able to finish the front before Tim called time.

    • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

As much as I really like this overall look, that middle part of the dress can’t help but make me think of gum wrapper chains my sisters used to make when we were kids.

      • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

Yes! That’s what it reminded me of – but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Thank you!

        • http://www.readbarbara.com/ ReadBarbara

          Ha! Happy to help.

    • Gatto Nero

Miles better. The warmer hair color and longer length suit her. The dress is interesting but flawed. But I’m just so relieved that it’s not cleaved to the waist.

    • kathryn_dc

      Constant wind-blown hair. I’m jealous!

    • PeaceBang

She looks like a hot mess. Genuinely hot, but a mess. Visible roots, and that dress is made out of recycled gum wrappers.

    • http://tvblogster.blogspot.com Boop

Sorry, I don’t see it. I want to like, and agree it’s a step up from the wash out from the Emmys. But she looks like she’s been dragged through Mood by her hair after an interior design class left their fabric patches all over the floor. Maybe this dress is better live and in motion, because those tiles look like they move. If not – she looks like their become dislodged.

    • elzatelzabelz

Her hair is awesome, the dress doesn’t work for me- the weird saggy black netting throws it off.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com cheekypinky

It’s weird and vaguely 1920s, and I like it on her. Especially the glitter blue eyeliner–best she’s looked in ages on the red carpet!
