Britney Spears in Mikael D at the People’s Choice Awards

Posted on January 09, 2014

This isn’t an awful dress. In terms of Britney style, it’s actually pretty good.

Britney Spears attends the 2014 People’s Choice awards at Nokia Theatre, Los Angeles, California in a Mikael D dress accessorized with Giuseppe Zanotti shoes and Broken English jewelry.

Although the combination of too-tight stilettos, her usual too-tight dress, camera flashes and hair bleach fumes apparently almost sent her crashing through the backdrop. Steady as she goes there, girl.

You can’t change who someone is and Britney is always going to be someone who thinks tight dresses and bleached hair are the definition of beauty. After all this time, we’re willing to accept that about her. And in a way, we admire her stubbornness. Ain’t nobody gonna change this girl.

Our only real quibble is with the color scheme. A salute to beige. Hair, skin, dress and shoes – all the same color. It’s freaky. If that dress was red and the shoes were black or silver, she’d look amazing. We honestly don’t have any complaints aside from that. Well. There’s the haircolor, which we realize we keep mentioning, but dear god that’s some yellow hair. Her scalp must hate her. Pretty sure you can afford something a bit better than a kitchen-sink dye job, Brit.

The flesh colored fabric is unfortunate. Looks like a rare fungus is attacking her skin.

    • ecallaw1977

It looks like an ACTUAL fungus on her ankle. Yick!

      • Faerie Nuff

She has psoriasis. It can look pretty gross, but I applaud her decision to not dress like a nun to cover it up, or take the medication that has a side effect of “possible death” just to look nicer for public appearances.

        • ecallaw1977

Good to know–I had no idea WHAT that was.

  • Rand Ortega

Yay! Barbara Mandrell finally came out of retirement!

    • CeeRich

      You win!

      • DaringMiss

        Second the win!

        • NYCGlamourpuss

    • decormaven

Does that mean Louise and Irlene are far behind?

      • Rand Ortega

Considering what Kaley Cuoco & Malin Ackerman have been wearing lately, signs point to No!

        • decormaven

Love the Magic 8 Ball reference! It is good for giving life direction.

  • I agree with everything you’ve said, but I still like it when illusion netting actually provides an illusion.

    • BayTampaBay

Which is working here. This the first illusion netting dress I have seen that I actually like.

      • omg_dora

I agree. Well, I still don’t like it, but it matches her skin color very well and is hard to see in the pictures unless you’re looking for it.

  • Diego!

Even her tattoo on her right foot matches the dress!!! OMG! She looks good but the beige shoes are too much.

  • Carleenml

she’s holding an award? has she done something?

    • It’s the People’s Choice Awards – the bar is set pretty low, I think.

    • Evan

I’ve always had the impression that the People’s Choice Awards just gives you an award for showing up.

      • marlie

The only ones who show up are the ones who are getting an award?

        • Evan

Yup, because most of the celebrities don’t even bother to show up for the People’s Choice Awards. If an A-Lister shows up, you can bet your money they’re most likely getting an award.

          • marlie

Yeah, i was agreeing with you. It was more of a rhetorical question. I always seem to lose my ability to communicate effectively, in the afternoon.

          • Evan

Haha I just find it hard to get my point across in this digital age sometimes because unlike speech, there’s no inflection to go by or anything.

  • I made my husband listen to “Perfume” last night as me and one of my biffles slow danced. He has not forgiven me.

That said…can this be the year of the Mandrell reference? I would love that.

  • PlethoraofBooks

Anyone noticed the tear in her illusion netting? It’s visible when she put her hand on her hip and it ruined the whole look from being ok to… Girl, that’s not your dress.

    • MzzPants

      Girl, that’s not anybody’s dress.

  • Introspective

    hair is banana yellow.

dress is giving me ice skater at the club. and is at least a size too tight.

shoes are a non factor. they dont bring the look anywhere, whether up or down.

but to say something nice: makeup is pretty here. that shit cant do enough to save this look though. cause she went out of her box of leger bandage dresses, but did she really venture far enough?

  • hughman

“Oh yeah y’all, I’d love to wear Mikael D! You know I just love their french fries!”

    • Evan

Yes, you know homegirl would probably prefer to be sitting in her sweats watching re-runs of Buffy the Vampire Slayer while eating Cheetos.

      • formerlyAnon

True confessions: I liked this because that’s what *I’d* like to be doing.

    • NYCGlamourpuss

Bwaahahaa!! I seriously just love you to bits!

  • ELauraMaynard

I don’t understand why everyone is so afraid of colour, but oh well. It’s a lovely dress, but yes, I want it in a deep red or maybe even blue. And about her hair, what can she say? She’s a product of fashion from the 90s. It’s a miracle that it’s not crimped or anything. I can stand the attempt to be Buffy Summers as long as it’s not looking like it just came out of a French braid.

  • gabbilevy

Apparently there was a lace-over-nude-lining dress code for the PCAs last night.

  • sugarkane105

To think I used to take pictures of Brit to the hairstylist to copy her color. Ah, high school.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

her face just looks scared and sad. seriously, does this girl even want to be part of the “spears machine” anymore? girl, you have made your money…just go be a mom or something…you dont ever look like you want to be where you are…

    • sugarkane105

The sad thing is that her father is in charge of her career, thanks to her noticeable mental instability a few years back. I’m hoping that staying in one spot for her new Vegas show will help keep her a little happier.

    • barbarienne

Yes, exactly. I don’t know if she’s just not feeling it, and so her smile looks more like gritting of teeth, or if she just has one of those fakey smiles.

Sometimes I just feel so bad for these stars who spent their childhood as professional performing dolls, dressed up and directed by other people.

    • fursa_saida

Sadly, that choice isn’t really up to her.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

also, when did she become anna farris?

  • Evan

What’s with all of the figure skating outfits today (and this is coming from a former figure skater)? Also, I’m not sure that’s HER definition of beauty. Probably more like her management’s.

    • Constant Reader

Maybe the ladystars are getting in the mood for the upcoming Olympics. Otherwise, I got nothin’.

  • Mrs. Julien

I remember seeing photos several years ago showing the damage of hair extensions to her scalp. Can anyone tell me if the hair comes back eventually? I realise this is the red carpet and the hair isn’t all hers.

    • spooki

It all depends on how badly the follicle was damaged. Sometimes it will grow back but it can be permanent if the follicle is destroyed.

      • Mrs. Julien

        Thank you and YOUCH!

    • Sobaika

It can but not usually when you continue to assault it with hot tools and clip ins.

  • marlie

Aside from this being a Britney “of course,” I just hate how uncomfortable she looks. I feel bad for her.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I don’t understand why women still insist on this shade of blonde. It just reminds me of what I saw in 2003 and earlier.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

Bless her tacky heart but this – even with its problems – is way too refined for Britney.

  • @Biting Panda

So, the gossip rubbish is that she is kept in a non media bubble. No smart phone, no laptops, etc. Assuming for one minute that’s true, her saying that she was so surprised to win last night, had me laughing a little. Everyone at the PCAs knows they won already, imagining her team not telling her just so she can enjoy the moment is deliciously wrong. Yes, I’m sure she meant surprised to win, in general, not in that moment. For a woman who does not appear to enjoy public speaking, she did pretty good, gum chewing aside.

She’s making HUGE bank in Vegas, why is there not a top notch team styling her? Is it intentional to keep her from changing and evolving, so that her long time fans can experience a bit of back in time moment? If she never updates her style, can we still pretend it is 2004?

    • Sarah

I seriously wonder this too. One has to believe it is deliberate, for some reason or another (keeping Britney happy, keeping the fans happy, etc.) because it has been 15 years since she hit the scene and girl STILL HAS BAD HAIR. I mean, even at the height of her fame, she had terrible hair. She could have and probably still can pay for better, but it must be a signature at this point. I has a sad for her. She always looks like she’s trying to be someone/something she just isn’t, like my SIL who is the one chubby short one in a cast of sisters who are statuesque and skinny. She’s lovely, but always comparing herself to them, which is a shame. I think it’s the same for BS.

    • Someone in the bubble can buy her some toning shampoo.

      • @Biting Panda

        Hard truths.

    • decormaven

No one on her “team” is going to rock the boat when it comes to the money machine.

    • demidaemon

It’s hard to use the huge bank for yourself when your daddy controls the reins.

  • Karen Belgrad

She is clearly paying homage to the 20th anniversary of Kerrigan-Harding with her dress

    • Imasewsure

Yes I feel like we’ve been looking at variations on skating costumes all day… now it makes sense!

  • kittenwithaquip

    Bless her little heart.

  • Britney’s one of the few celebs I can manage to feel bad for – I wonder how much input her father/other guardians have on her styling, which actually makes me wonder- is it Britney who thinks of beauty as bleached hair and tight dresses or her legally-in-control handlers? (and how sad if it is her dad who decides she has to look as such – surely someone sees that dye job looks cheap)

Actually, there’s some internal tension in this look when I think about that, because it’s not Dolly drag (which I think would fit Britney just fine – like her denim gown way back when) but rather it seems to me the allover beige is someone’s (mistaken) idea of classy sexy through implied nudity and neutral tones.

  • kimmeister

The illusion netting is the most illusory I’ve seen in a long time. In the first picture I can just barely make out where it starts at her neckline.

If she had to go for that dress, I wish she had gone with a pewter shoe if she was going to be matchy.

  • Anna_Cecilia

Key phrase being, “In terms of usual Britney style.” Yes, it’s too tight, there’s a hole in the armpit and the hair is out of this world unnatural, but it’s been much MUCH worse. When you’ve used a gas station restroom barefoot, even beige shoes are welcome.

  • KinoEye

Yikes. The worst thing about the fleshiness of it all is that it’s only slightly different than her skin tone. It’s like trying to match two different pieces of black clothing together. My eyes are twitching like there’s no tomorrow. Also, what the hell is that on her left foot? Looks like some horrible, flesh-eating disease that already consumed her torso and has moved on to her legs.

  • KT

Oh jesus christ. I can’t look at anything but that god awful hair and those plastic shoes. NOOOOOOOOO oh whatever, what did I expect.

  • Terrified show pony. Same as it ever was, poor dear.

  • MilaXX

Sadly I think this is as god as it gets from her.

  • Alyssa Caruso Ivins

also, girl is sportin some BUTT. she’s like giving face except, it’s her fine bootay.

  • hunt3002

Poor dear. I doubt she gets any say over wardrobe. The people making decisions for her are just terrible.

  • MoHub

I can’t take my eyes off the way the skirt is pulling across just below her belly. It’s like zeroing in on a horizontal target.

  • Imasewsure

Agreed on the color scheme option to fix all of this (fried head to tortured toe)… still not bad for Brit

  • Lauren Lynch Fox

I thought it was okay when she was standing still, even if it was too short and too tight. But did you see that she could not walk up the stairs to get the award? I wish someone would tell her that it is okay to 32(?), a mother of two and not look like a tramp and still be pretty and cool.

    • gigi kennedy

yes! i watched that trainwreck of an “awards” show for 2 minitues to see her trying to manuever on the stairs. it was cringe worthy.

  • I have only one word for you, gurl. TONER.

  • Christine Hart

Grading on a curve, she looks fantastic.

  • Sam Smith

Britt is one I really feel bad for. She just appears so unhappy most of the time. She doesn’t want to dress up and go collect awards, and she actually looks like she is forced to and she probably was. I wish the poor girl could just retire, live of her vast fortune, not have to lip synch in Vegas and just get to hang out in sweat pants all the time.

    • @Biting Panda

I used to want the same for her, but then I thought it through.

I think *she* likes performing, but is not comfortable off the stage and in front of cameras. I think performing is all she knows how to do and she’s looked much healthier and happier since she’s had this show to get ready for. I assume the amount of physical work she puts into it is good for her and whatever her mental situation is. To couch surf and blow her millions at the Bayou Blue Walmart would set back her progress. This gives her purpose, direction, validation and social interaction. She’s too young to be that directionless and too uneducated and sheltered to think to spend that time traveling the world, learning new crafts or generally enriching her life. I want more for her than sweat pants and Twizzlers.

      • cocohall

I watched the I am Britney Jean special while I was doing my Christmas baking, and I think you are spot on. She really appears to love dancing and working with the choreographers. In those scenes she looked focused and involved. In the rest of it she looked completely out of her element: “I haven’t had water for a long time” (in reference to her show elements). People were literally moving mountains of earth for her show and all she could really add was “I like cheesy.” It is an improvement over her previous life where she just drove around with the paparazzi following her every trip through the drive through, but she did seem like she was being managed like a show pony and not an adult woman. Her sister, by contrast, seemed to have actually grown up, both physically and mentally. Watching her hobble up the steps last night wasn’t pretty, and the show seemed to be edited weirdly at that point, as if something was cut out. I’m just thankful that she doesn’t have daughters. Not that all this is good for her boys, but I can’t imagine a little girl trying to make sense of how Britney behaves and dresses in 2014 and beyond.

      • marlie

If that’s the case – and you make a really good point – then I wish she had enough agency to say that she doesn’t want to do all of the publicity stuff. It seems like she can’t have one without the other, and maybe retiring is better than being forced to do the song and dance.

    • sagecreek

Sam Smith, you are very kind, but why can’t the poor girl just retire? I don’t think anyone’s forcing her to keep up the shtick, and if they are, then she needs both a good counselor and a good lawyer — which I’m pretty sure she has the bucks to hire.

      • demidaemon

See my comment above. I really doubt Brit has ANY legal recourse at this point.

  • LostDancer

Basing an entire outfit on your foot tattoo is a little OTT

  • lillyvonschtupp

    LEAVE BRITTANY ALONE!!!!!!*sobs*

  • Hiptobesquare

“A salute to beige.” After that, what more needs to be said?

  • Jessica Freeman

I can’t help but thinks he is looking at her handlers in half those pictures “pose? like this? and then like this?”

The hair color is a mess, as is the rest of it. It is pure Brit Brit, but really, its time to try something new.

  • EEKstl

Real Housewife. Not that it was ever going to be OTHER than Real Housewife, but…just sayin’.

  • deelup

    Awards Show Skipper doll.

  • MoreShoes

    She doesn’t age well.

  • NYCGlamourpuss

Is body fungus sweeping the nation?

    • sagecreek

Yeah, I was surprised the Unks didn’t mention that. It’s the same thing that took over Sandi’s dress.

  • Erica_Vuitton

I love Honkey Tonk Britney!! She’s made some very public statements lately about how shy she is and how she has a difficult time with crowds unless she’s on stage. She clearly went through a mental breakdown a few years back so its pretty obvious she’s uncomfortable in public but is a total professional and does her pop star duties. I think the dress is perfect for her & the event even if a bit tight. As for the hair I’ve seen pics on other sites where it doesn’t look anywhere near this yellow so I’m not sure what that’s all about…

  • Jenna621

She looks so unbelievably uncomfortable. Outside of the beige-ness, it’s actually a cute look for her.

  • lalahartma

    Pinky pink pink.

  • bellafigura1

Also, Brit, deep breaths, hon. Get your yoga going, your mindfulness meditation. “Cause you look crazy tense, all the time. She always seems to be faintly reaching out to hold something for ballast.

  • Tracy_Flick

    1. Go up a size, dress and shoes.
    2. Wear something with some color.
    3. De-crisp your hair.

I have to admit, though, she comes across as likeable even at her fashion worst.

  • Jennifer Marlowe.

  • Danielle

She always looks so uncomfortable in pictures.

  • xmixiex

she always looks so painfully awkward and uncomfortable. changing that would work wonders for her whole appearance.

  • Carla_Charlton

    Pineapple hair.

  • nannypoo

    She makes me sad.

  • queeniethebold

Whenever i see her, it makes me feel sorry for her. Her smile never reaches her eyes. Her eyes always look scared or bleak or both.

The dress? No. Hair is pretty heinous.

  • Akemi

It doesn’t help that she just always looks extremely uncomfortable.

  • teensmom99

I actually think a big problem is the many hues of beige. If you are going to wear a light beige dress, it might just highlight unnatural dark beige that is your face and legs.

  • formerlyAnon

She needs to either go full-on Dolly Parton for dressy stuff or get a hairdresser who’ll rule her with a rod of iron and refuse to let her look like – well, it would be calling names based on socioeconomic status and geographic location and would sound ugly – so I’ll just say, look like that hair does.

  • Pennymac

I’m grading in a severe curve, here, but on the Britney scale, she looks good.

  • She looks better than she has in ages and that makes me happy. She doesn’t have that deer in the headlights look about her here either. I hope she’s finally coming into her own and has started loving her honky tonk self.

  • GillianHolroyd

    “Her scalp must hate her.”

  • veronkimo

The color of this dress is absolutely hideous! You’re right, that hair color is terrible!

  • CatherineRhodes

The ice rink is that way.

  • ThaliaMenninger

When Britney Spears isn’t even close to the trashiest person there, you know the world as we know it is going to end soon.

  • guest2visits

Yes – the hair. I started to complain about it; but why bother. Asking for a less brittle & more healthy looking head of blonde for Britney is like asking for …… the Kardashian’s to buy a little island somewhere and go on vacay for 3 to 5; Years. NOT gonna happen, no matter how wonderful it would be for everyone…..
I do like that they let her have a somewhat grown-up dress, for a change. They could have hacked it much shorter in typical Britney-style. Not crazy about the tight, or the shoulder design, but it could have been worse.

  • kerryev

The hair color is awful but her roots are done, which seems to be the RC exception for ladies with yellow hair.

  • Coleen

Is anyone else getting some latter-day Monroe out of her? I worry.

  • MM4321

Yes the hair is bad but, for me, the teeth have always been worse. Just how many teeth does this girl have? And why must I always see all of them, all at once? And why can’t I look at her teeth w/o needing sunglasses? I have a pet peeve about celebs overdoing the veneers, and here is the prime example of why. It looks uncomfortable to have teeth that big.

  • amaranth16

Yeah, the outfit isn’t the height of sophistication. But her skin looks gorgeous. And something about the shape of her legs and the shape of the toe on those heels is really working for me. If only she’d dumped all the beige. I think red would have been too holiday at this time of year, but I think a royal or navy blue with that same pewter detailing, pewter shoes, and slightly more normal-colored hair would have been really lovely.

  • Sam

I honestly try to understand the source of her tackiness… Can someone just be… genuinely… THAT tacky?
