Beyonce in Michael Costello at the 2014 Grammy Awards

Posted on January 27, 2014

Give it up for Project Runway alum Michael Costello, you guys. This is one hell of a “get” for him and he should be justifiably proud of it.

Beyonce attends the 2014 Grammy Awards at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California in a Michael Costello gown accessorized with Christian Louboutin heels and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

She killed last night with the opening number (voice got wobbly at times but she had untold millions of people eating out of her hand for a couple moments there) but we really don’t like the hair. Fortunately, it’ll be something completely different in a week. Hell, it’s probably something completely different today.

The dress? It’s okay. It looks a little rough in closeups, but it’s definitely her style and she’s wearing it on the right red carpet to be wearing a dress like this. Music award shows are not the places to be demure and tasteful. She’s on point.

It’s a real “Bam” dress, but it I keep thinking that it’s something that Carmen Carrera would wear.

    • demidaemon

      AGREED. It’s a body queen’s dress. Not a music QUEEN’s dress.

  • omg_dora

  • mommyca

Hate the hair and the two-tone she shows from the back: her natural skin color for her back and the color in her arms with the tulle, it’s just plain wrong…
It’s tacky all over… and how did Michael Costello get to dress her?

    • KayeBlue

ITA. Since Costello obviously hand-made this for her, why not use a netting that would match or at least flatter her skin tone?

      • KateShouldBeWorking

Question from a white lady who neither sews nor wears sheer:

What are the range of color options in netting? It seems the skin tone match is often worse on POC; is there a lack of realistic options?

        • unbornfawn

Very possibly. The range of skin tones is endless, while the range of netting is much more limited.

          • Kent Roby

I have dyed much netting and lycra over the years to match the individual’s skin tone for Mardi Gras costumes, which is often needed to make “him” look like “her”. I’ve also found a good source in NYC for a wider variety.

        • laurenislearning

There is a scene in the documentary “first position” (about a ballet competition) where the mother of an African American ballet dancer dyes netting and tights to match her skin tone, saying they can not find the right color to buy anywhere. So there seems to be a lack of ready-to-use options. But if you hand-sew a dress, why not take the time to dye the netting the right color?

          • River

One also wonders how different it looks under different lighting and in photos vs. real life.

          • Jen

I just watched that this weekend. Loved it. And I agree, it wouldn’t take too much time to dye netting for a custom gown.

          • Lisa_Co

I saw that and remember it,too. BTW, that girl(Michaela) is now in Dance Theatre of Harlem.

      • demidaemon

Considering the only other client I’ve seen him with is that horrible girl from Shahs of Sunset (the one with the annoyingly high voice), I can’t bag on him too much. Good for him. Don’t know how he swung it.

  • jen_vasm

Stripper wedding dress. I agree that it was Grammy-appropriate, though.

    • Klaudia Dimitrievic Galas

Perfect cause her opening number felt like it was in a strip club.

    • Spreecord

      90s stripper wedding dress.

  • Jessica Freeman

I really don’t like the dress, or the hair. She used to be a bit more classy in her choices.

    • Dangerfield5

Really? Did you ever see any of her Destiny’s Child outfits? Compared to them, this is royal wedding appropriate.

      • Jessica Freeman

Ba-zing! I should clarify ‘classy for Beyonce’. This new album has seriously brought out the overtly sexy in her. To the point of raunchy.

  • Saturnine

Nice silhouette, but I’m seeing taste issues. . .

    • wisdomy

For serious, that is Too Much Crotch. An inch of lace would have made a significant difference here.

  • newleaf1

Yikes. She’s about thisclose to showing all the goodies.

  • megohd

BUT HE CAN’T SEW! /Gretchen and Ivy, wailing and gnashing their teeth.

I weirdly like her hair. Never a big fan of unnatural blondness, but I just appreciate that there’s so much less of it.

As for the dress, I agree with TLo. It works for her, even if I don’t really like it per se.

    • Catiline

Ha!!! I was going to pick on some of the outfit’s flaws, but they’re all completely forgiven when I imagine how apoplectic those two must be.

  • Jaeda Laurez

I would have liked the hair to be a little less crunchy at the ends, but I like the shorter cut. I also like the dress until her thighs. if the lace had gone down all the way, I would have loved it.

    • VioletF.

Drew Barrymore called. She wants her hair back.

  • bookish

This is the second time I’ve seen photos of her from the Grammys and thought she was Rita Ora at first glance. I guess it’s the hair color?

    • rosanegra

I thought she was Rita Ora too! At this point she can do better than looking like anybody else.

    • formerlyAnon

I think it’s the hair plus the bold lip/makeup.

    • tereliz

Me three! Not just the color, but that crunchy texture Ora’s hair is usually styled in.

  • Sobaika

That hair is awful, awful, awful.

Dress is straddling the meeting point between tacky and sexy, which is just right for the Grammys.

    • Tracy M

Straddling? The line is a speck!

  • Mightiadd

It’s a bunch of paper cake doilies attached to mosquito netting over some bad underpinnings (recycled pantyhose?). Maybe she should go back to her Mom’s amusing creations.

    • Sobaika

I would much prefer not to see the work of Tina Knowles ever again.

      • Never ever. Ever ever. EVER EVER.

  • Latin Buddy

Displaying the same issues he had on Project Runway. Too derivative and tacky.

    • ccinnc

I was sure it was one of Mom’s until TLo’s tweet set me straight.

    • Kent Roby

I’m assuming that Tim Gunn told MC to make this dress exactly one hour before Beyonce threw it on.

    • DuBey2

Say what you will, Michael is probably laughing all the way to the bank.

  • Ramon Figueroa

Costello’s tastelessness is so pure it becomes a valid fashion option. This is Cher for the 21st century.

    • Demeter

I agree. If it were not Beyoncé, you would say she looks like trash.

    • Ginger

At least Bob Mackie had style/vision and Cher had talent. Sorry…Beyonce takes up one of the top spots on my (in my mind) very rational dislike list.

      • Ginny Ellsworth

Agree about Bob Mackie. Anyone who could make that window dress for Carol Burnett is someone I would love to meet. When I think of all those costumes, the man is a genius!

        • Ramon Figueroa

I fell in love with him all over again after his appearance in the last season of Ru Paul’s Drag Race. When he said that Alaska was a star from the crotch down I nearly fell off my chair.

    • manina

Do not agree, Cher never looked slutty or cheap.

      • Ginger

I beg to differ on the slutty aspect, but that’s alright. Cher is Cher…and God love her for that!

  • SugarSnap108

I did a cartoon-like double-take when I saw Michael Costello’s name. Well, good for him.
Umm … her face is pretty?

  • Leah Elzinga

oy. that MAKEUP! Seriously, those brows are a wreck. And 1. she looks weirdly, WEIRDLY pale and 2. pale AND ashy?! What is going on BKs???

    • Sobaika

I’m assuming that she is wearing stage makeup considering she was opening the show and there wasn’t enough time to redo her face paint. Stage looks are by definition crazy, it takes a lot to make features stand out underneath the lights and withstand the sweat.

      • Leah Elzinga

totally get that BUT it’s BEYONCE. If there’s anyone that has that part of things handled, it’s Queen B, no? And for a chick that normally goes in for a very defined brow (which works great on stage) those spidery, greyish things above her eyes are pretty weird. And not in a good way.

        • DuBey2

Kelly O. kept stating that Beyonce only had minutes (10?? I think?) to change totally from her stage look(wet hair etc….) to this. So maybe the brows got a pass due to time constraints.

  • Gatto Nero

I don’t like the illusion netting, and so much of this dress looks like cut-and-paste. Not setting a high bar for taste, either; she’s this close to showing the fine china. Still, it’s probably exactly what she asked for.

  • jw_ny

Definitely a a major feather in Mike’s cap…not really a fan of the dress tho. I think I’d like it more if she were wearing a full body stocking beneath and/or all the sheer sections were uniform in color/appearance. Seeing the differences in the sheer sections is distracting….arms and legs are different than chest and belly….not really sure what’s going on there, and the sheer color clashes with her skin tone. . Also…her hair…not a fan of her with a bob nor the blonde hair.

    • ccinnc

He prob had to use a lighter shade of illusion netting to disguise that he didn’t trim those appliques well. Sloppy.

  • ballerinawithagun

Looks great from a distance, correct venue and body for this dress. Now, on the other hand, the close-ups of the dress…It looks like they made a stretch tulle dress and then quickly hand stitched the sections of lace on to the dress while she was wearing it. I guess that makes it custom. Ha ha. That wrinkly tulle makes her elbows look as bad as mine! Like the hair cut, hate the hair colors!

  • I think if you can see nude fishnets through your skirt, your dress is too sheer.

    • zenobar

    • @Biting Panda

The more I go back up and look at this dress, the more I hate it. Two more passes and she’s going on my worst dressed list top 3.

      • demidaemon

I only needed one look to know I hated it. It may be the Grammy’s, but, sometimes, you go over the line. This went WAY over the line for me.

  • @Biting Panda

Rrrriight. Well, I hate the performance. Shouldn’t that song be….hotter? As far as the dress, yes, kudos for a PR alum to get a big name, but the dress is just similar to Jennifer Lopez’s white lace Golden Globes dress.

    • filmcricket

Agreed on the performance. She LOOKED amazing, like, congrats on your everything Bey, but that song was meh beyond belief. And this dress is awful.

      • @Biting Panda

See, I don’t even think she looked amazing. I hated the wet look hair, it was a Flash Dance rip off routine for a really shitty song. I did not get the appeal, unless the only appeal is nearly naked Bey, which we’ve all seen. A lot.

        • deelup

I didn’t get it either, but she’s on my completely and utterly rational hate list.

          • Jessica Freeman

I’ve always liked her, but within the past few years, she is slowly but surely moving to that list for me.

        • filmcricket

Fair enough. I think she looks spectacular, and I don’t see a lot of her except on this site and GFY, because I’m not a fan so I don’t watch her videos over and over.

          • @Biting Panda

Do they still make videos? I guess they do, but I think you can only watch them on line. The MTV has been taken over by pregnant teens.

          • filmcricket

Going by Tumblr this whole album was nothing *but* videos.

          • demidaemon

You can watch them on other networks. I know VH1 still shows them in the wee hours of the morning, and Fuse shows videos fairly often.

    • marlie

I thought the opening act was a bit of a snooze. It was supposed to set the tone for the night, and it did… too slow to get moving, and a little off.

      • ccinnc

I can’t like this comment enough. There was no energy in the first 100 mins of the show. The script for LL Cool J was terrible. All 4 of us were bored to sobs.

        • Sobaika

Why was he hosting?? He is terrible and seemed desperate to remind us that once upon a time he was considered a legitimate musical talent.

          • filmcricket

CBS star. And Neil Patrick Harris already hosts everything else.

    • Jacob Bowen

THANK YOU! I thought, “Wow, Michael Costello ripped off JLo VERY poorly” as soon as I saw it!

  • MilaXX

It’s certainly a bit of a redemption for him after the Gabby Sidibe fiasco. As for her performance, I was bored by the whole thing. I’m not a Bey fan and I’ve never heard the song before. One of my pet peeves is when celebs sings the unedited version of their song on awards shows. I can’t enjoy a song when half the verses are bleeped out.

    • Sobaika

The producers were overzealous! I think there’s only two lines in particular that should’ve been bleeped but there was a lot that ended up being censored.

  • Spicytomato1

Yikes. From a distance it’s not horrible and maybe even kind of interesting. It feels like it’s trying to be a different take on J Lo’s plunging green Grammy dress from some years back — trying to be as bare as possible without going completely naked.

But close up it looks atrocious, wow. That’s no Versace. I wonder if this gig will help or hurt his business??

    • demidaemon

I’m going with help. Despite it’s flaws, it’s a dress on one of the premiere female music stars of today. You can;t buy that kind of publicity for a business.

      • Spicytomato1

Agreed. I was thinking more about it I think the saying “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” holds true here for sure.

  • Sally Spannagle

Hate hate hate the hair… and this dress makes her chest look like two giant strapped down pancakes

  • PeaceBang

I didn’t see her red carpet entrance, so I missed this. It looked pretty when she was seated. And that’s all I got, because I think it’s a tacky fig leaf dress and the lace placement on the arms is a disaster.

  • Sam Smith

It actually looks like a PR dress in that he ran out of time and just ended up gluing a bunch of stuff onto some illusion netting. From far away its not bad, but up close is bad.

  • Kathy Charbonnier

She only chose that dress to show off the new thigh gap…..When the heck did that happen? I’m a fluffy girl who appreciated the touching of those thighs.

    • deelup

I completely agree. I need whatever stockings she’s wearing… or the name of the surgeon she went to.

    • MoHub

Sculptor Henry Moore once opined that one should never be able to see space between a woman’s thighs.

  • Diego!

Oh honey… no. When I thought Mariah was the sluttiest on the red carpet, along came you. This screams you are cheap. Which is not the truth. I don’t like it AT ALL. Hair is awful. Make up is sad the the dress is like a porn actress getting married on set. No. No. No.

    • alyce1213

You nailed it with Porn actress getting married on set. Exactly.

      • Diego!

Thank you, but it’s the truth!

    • Glam Dixie

The makeup is beyond sad, if I hadn’t been told it was Beyonce, I wouldn’t have recognized her. They should have lopped off the long sleeves to keep the wrinkles off of her arms, cap sleeves would have been better and had the lace go all the way down.It still would have been porn star getting married but maybe less, I don’t know, ugly?

      • Diego!

I think this is taking ugly into horrifying category.

    • manina

She has tuned into the sluttiest pop singer and her husband loves to show her off, like a real pimp would.

      • Diego!

I saw their performance and to me it was nothing. I didn’t get anything from them. It was kinda lame.

  • YoungSally

Bey will NOT be amused when she reviews all 20 million photos of her from last night and discovers that the dress makes it look like she has fat/fleshy elbows in the first pic.

  • decormaven

I would have liked to have seen a more elevated look for her. This is a little too attention-grabbing, and not in a good way.

    • Vickiefantastico

This reeks of desperation, like she’s trying to show the world how hot she is. I don’t get it. She’s all over the place on the media. How much more attention does she need?

  • JR Labrador

Eh, the best thing about it is that somewhere Ivy and Gretchen are eating their hearts out.

  • Patrick Cleary

It’s very Michael Costello, but the close-ups show that he cut out the lace with what? Pinking shears?

  • luludexter

“a little rough in closeups” seriously! what, couldn’t actually trim the edges of the white applique before attaching to the sheer? for Beyonce at the Grammy’s? auf wiedersehn!

  • lobsterlen

Absolutely horrible dress. Closeup, faraway, front, back, sides. Horrible from top to bottom. Then the hair … bad perm hair from the 80s is not style that should show up anywhere.

  • ewes_urn_aim

And her upper lip color is bleeding/seeping. Doesn’t lip-liner correct that?

  • WendyD

That is a hot mess. WTF.

  • VicksieDo

It looked striking and cool in the low light of the arena, sitting down, but it’s vulgar and cheap looking in the light…

    • conniemd

Agree, didn’t see the red carpet, thought it looked good on her sitting down.

  • I would like to suggest this is the worst dress ever made, in the universe. Tacky wickety wack EW!

  • Anna

Beyonce was in fact drunk when she agreed to this. Girl, that’s not your hair. Wash and go is not for you.

  • MoreShoes

Nope. That’s an ugly dress. She lost weight though. Maybe the 21 day diet works after all. Or the not-eating-at-all pre award diet is the way to go.

  • Kelly

Looks exactly like the plastic table cover my grandma used to protect her dining room table — white plastic lace, sheer bits, and all. The kind of thing that wipes off easily when grandkids spill things. Turned into a dress, it’s tacky as hell (and I bet it doesn’t clean up as well). Still, as you say, it’s the Grammys, where one can get away with much, stylistically speaking.

  • Danielle

Squashing those pregnancy rumors, one by one! Anyone see her with a brandy snifter later on in the show?

    • @Biting Panda

But did you hear when Jamie Foxx was rambling on and on about her, as he presented? One of the last things he mumbled was “and all the pregnant ladies are all how do I get that attention….” or something similar. Point being he specifically said pregnant. I didn’t know there were new rumors surrounding her womb. I was exhausted by the last round.

      • ccinnc

I wondered what in the heck he was talking about. Awkward.

        • @Biting Panda

Extremely. As was his whole bit carrying on about her and her hotness.

      • Danielle

        I don’t think they’re new, just ongoing.

      • Sobaika

I think he was referring to a post-baby body.

        • @Biting Panda

Ahhhh. That would make sense. Thank you.

      • Erica_Vuitton

I took that as a diss to Kim K.

  • acevedob

    Oh god. (That is all.)

  • marlie

This was certainly eye-catching. I like it – for the Grammy’s. Though Bey isn’t the first (or second, or third) to wear a dress like this, so I’m surprised that she went with a look that’s so “done.” And I appreciate the fact that the illusion netting is a little darker (and thus closer to her natural skin tone), but it’s still a little off.

    Congrats to Michael, though!

    • Jaeda Laurez

I liked it better when Rihanna did it, but I didn’t mind it that much- it’s the Grammys, after all. Pop stars are not really meant to be tasteful.

  • Blair Sylvester

Slutty bride who might flash her vadge . Fresh

  • jilly_d

Good for Michael and all…..but I fucking hate this dress.

  • Tatiana Luján

Proud? i find this dress vulgar, tacky and derivative.

  • Elle E Dee

    Poorly executed Givenchy ripoff.

  • SewingSiren

I like the hair length. She ought to let it go to it’s natural color too.

  • Victoria Anzalone

Very happy for Michael Costello, but man, do I hate that this dress is unlined. Takes it straight to Tackyville.

  • Richard Harper

    Hate. It.

  • Adrianna Grężak

I’m kind of shocked by how cheap and tacky this looks. This is a huge miss for me

  • Frank_821

On the plus side it is a big deal Michael got to dress her

On the negative all he did was a make a Beyonce dress for Beyonce. It’s venue appropriate and he’s never been afraid to be sexy or revealing but this honestly doesn’t feel like anything of him is really in it. He’s never done anything THIS tacky before. It feels like she gave him instructions and he did what he was told

  • Sarah

Her hair looks like mine in middle school. (Which is not a good thing). And since everyone has already said what I think about the dress, may I interject that I also LOATHE the shoes? Peach plastic patent peep-toes. Lordy!

  • Nika E

Not cute. Her hair and makeup are a mess. Also, she looks a lil as we say on the south “poe”, like she lost a lot of weight too fast.

  • DominoEstella

eww..tacky. Sorry people but I don’t get the hype with her. Her sister is the style icon in my opinion. I can’t even deal with her songs.. just not a fan.

  • Jenna621

Hate it. i think the whole look is awful from top to bottom. She looks like she was trying to compete with Paris Hilton.

  • He’s done several of the might-as-well-be-naked dresses I’ve seen lately. This is less objectionable than the others because of the venue…

  • Evan

Let me get this off my chest: I think Beyonce (or her stylist) has awful taste. There, I said it.

    • Sobaika

You’re not wrong. Her slammin’ face and bod let her get away with a lot.

    • MilaXX

Most definitely. I always preferred Solange’s style over Bey’s.

      • Evan

I even prefer Rihanna’s style to Bey’s. Her style screams tacky to me. Rihanna can be trashy, but it doesn’t come across as tacky or garish to me for some reason.

        • MilaXX

Bey’s style feels more like pile on expensive crap, Rhianna’s style feels like she wants to add an urban twist to high fashion.

          • Evan

Exactly. I’m so happy somebody agrees with me on this! I feel like Beyonce wears things just because they’re expensive or because of the brand name/designer. For example, that monstrosity she wore at the Met Gala last year or the year before. It looked like her dress was swallowing a purple muppet. Just because it’s Givenchy doesn’t mean it’s any good. I agree that Rihanna’s style is more high fashion with an urban twist and A LOT more well put-together.

      • demidaemon

Solange has some misses, but they are always interesting to discuss. With Beyonce, you are basically getting different levels of tackiness, and, depending on your threshold for the day, you like/ dislike it based on how much of that tackiness you can take.

  • Lesley

this is beyonce’s year i was expecting something mind blowing on the carpet and this was kind of a fail for me

  • carnush

Really? The hottest album in recent memory and this is what you wear to the Grammys? You don’t need to try so hard anymore, Bey. For real.

  • cocohall

To be kind, perhaps her obvious weight loss was so recent that the dress had to be made ON THE RIDE OVER and that is why it looks like it was crafted with manicure scissors and a glue gun. She is almost Dreamgirls skinny again. She is a lovely girl at any weight, but clearly she is getting into fighting shape for something. If all the boy stars can do it (Matthew M, Jared Leto, Christian Bale) so can she. Does anyone know if she is prepping for a film role?

As for the taste issues, has she EVER had taste? I don’t remember that phase. On Fashion Police this week they showed what she wore to Blue Ivy’s 2nd birthday party at a zoo. The look involved gold sneakers, satin athletic shorts, panty hose and socks. It was aggressively awful. To my mind, Solange is the only one in the family that actually has some fashion sense.

    • MilaXX

May a result of the so called vegan diet she and Jay were on before the holidays

      • cocohall

I wondered about that. They both looked slim. The hip hop/soul power couple version of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill who have also gotten skinny in tandem.

    • Jaeda Laurez

She’s been on tour for the last few months- I saw the show; I challenge anyone to gain weight or keep it dancing (and dancing HARD) for 2+ hours the way she does for that show.

    • demidaemon

Yeah, that outfit was horrible. They really did pick the two worst outfits this week, and it was a photo finish as to which was worse.

  • alyce1213

I’m not a Michael Costello hater, I think he did some nice work on PR (some), but boy I hate this dress. So sick of peek-a-boo. The best I can say is that the shape is right for her and it fits well. Hair is terrible.

  • Garcia Loca

An A-lister like her shouldn’t have to resort to shoving her vulva and buttcrack in our faces like that. Pretty sad, if you ask me.

    • Vickiefantastico

Can I like this a million times? You hit the nail on the head. I just don’t get why she needed to do this. She’s currently very popular, very much constantly In the various media. This is literally screaming for attention that she doesn’t need. I would have expected something classier.

    • AnotherJulie

Finally somebody besides me feels this way! She is already the top of the heap – she can stop with the Dressing Skanky for Attention thing now.

  • mjude

not a fan of the dress. I didn’t even like her performance. I a complete bitter kitten today

  • Judy_J

Looks like she fell in a vat of icing.

  • SassieCassy

it’s obvious what happened. she and jay were doing it on the limo ride over.

driver roll up the partition please…

    • Erica_Vuitton

I want to like this 20 times.

  • Bethany Mavronicles

BEYONCE’S REAL HAIR! Oh shit… I yelled. Shhhhhhhhhhh. *I don’t want to scare it so it goes back into its hole and we never see it again.*

And the dress looks super sloppy in close ups. That seam and the edges of the white look like he used lefty scissors as a righty.

    • Jaeda Laurez

That’s not her real hair either lol- her real hair is in a short pixie cut- she debuted it on IG a couple of months ago.

      • Sobaika

I’m almost positive that was a wig/temporary thing and this hair is her real stuff.

  • Mia Moreno

I’m so disappointed in how rough it does look up-close. If it was exquisitely handmade this would be a beautiful dress. Alas. Michael Costello does know a woman’s body but it looks like he whipped this up in 48 hours.

  • AnneElliot

Tacky as hell. Hate the hair.

  • formerlyAnon

I wonder how old and un-rejuvenated she’d have to be before my first thought seeing her wouldn’t be “God, she’s pretty.”

    Props to Mr. Mr. Costello!

I don’t like the dress a ton, but there is a slight Venus rising on the half-shell air to it – which I think means it’s almost graceful looking – And I like that the neckline doesn’t plunge. (Hmm. Low bar, or what?) With you on the hair. Between the hair and the maybe, possible, just a teeeny smidge-on-the-harsh-side makeup she’s giving me a bit of a Rita Ora vibe. Isn’t that supposed to work the other way?

    But, god she’s pretty.

  • schadenfreudelicious

If she lops off a few feet and gets her skates on she is ready for Sochi…

  • stubbornthoughts

Awful dress. Okay performance. Bey is an amazing entertainer, but last night just didn’t do it for me. The internet is surely loving her, though. It’s sad how the exaggerated praise of her from places like Vulture and Buzzfeed are making me tired of Bey. She’s so good, I wish they’d just…stop talking about her so much.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I love that song, but if we are comparing the performance to the usual Beyonce Standard, it didn’t meet it.

  • boweryboy

That dress is terrible. It bugs me that the illusion netting is a weird beige gray, and don’t get me started on the applique. Plus what hell is going on with her head? Hair and make-up are tragic.

  • OhSheila

On twitter last night it became apparent, this dress is a Rihanna knockoff, with adjusted neckline, sleeves, and that damn fishtail. The fabric is almost exactly the same.

  • Joey Melliza

it’s a bit arts and crafts messy

  • sugarkane105

Next time, Bey needs to look at her dress and say “Is this something Kim Kardashian would wear?” If the answer is yes, PUT IT DOWN.

    • demidaemon

  • Maybe it’s the lighting or her makeup, but she looks kind of sickly to me. And she’s usually so radiant. Maybe she was actually ill?

  • Kent Roby

This dress is definitely a full-on Monet.

    • Vanessa Reyes

Totally agree. I think if she wanted to do an illusion type dress perhaps something from the Zuhair Murad Spring 2014 line

but props to Mr. Costello for getting some star attention.

  • AnotherJulie

She is a gorgeous woman with a fantastic figure and beautiful skin. She could wear almost anything and look fabulous. Personally I find this dress tacky and her performance last night too provocative for 8:00 TV but I am not the Grammy’s target audience.
I keep waiting for somebody of her “Music Royalty” stature to take a stand and go classy but it never happens. President Obama may think she is always classy but I would respectfully disagree after last night’s Grammys.

  • Joy

Yay for Michael Costello!! I loved all his too sexy gowns back in the good ol’ days of project runway!!!

  • BuffaloBarbara

I don’t especially care for the dress, honestly. There’s… a little too little of it to care for. What there is of it is a nice shape, but basically, she’s naked with some strategically placed bits of lace. Nice coup for Michael C’s business, but the actual product doesn’t do much for me.

  • Gracie82

Why does this woman get a pass with everything she does?

  • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Ooof, That is some rough hair. The netting looks terrible in the closeups, wrinkled and dingy. Queen Bey deserved better.

  • Tracy_Flick

I actually like it. I didn’t see the performance, but the dress together with the hair seem like an interesting tweak to the lace-goddess-dress-glamour-shot-hair that you see so often. Taking it to a more editorial place, maybe. That said, the sleeves are too much. Should have stopped at the lace cap sleeve.

  • numenah

Thosehick squiggly seams I’m seeing in the first picture–are they part of her fishnets? Horrible.

  • Malibufire

Looking forward to when the “flash your vagina” trend in dressing fades.

    • demidaemon

The magic 8 ball says: “Not soon.”

  • unbornfawn

Big applause for Michael. Dress is venue/client appropriate. The hair is tragic.

  • webslice33

whats up with the hair and makeup? she looks old..she has a nice body hut the dress is awful

  • Yeah, I’m not liking this at all. Greasy hair, muddy makeup, tacky dress etc.
But then I wouldn’t have imagined anything else apart from a dress like this for her though.
Plus she’s never exactly been “stylish” so to speak.

I do like her ring and nails though!

  • Presumptuous Insect

It does make her body look very good.

  • GorgeousThings

I can guarantee you will see a thousand knockoffs of this dress on the ballroom dance competition circuit.

  • Corsetmaker

It does it’s job for the occasion but he needs some sharper scissors. The illusion net isn’t a good match for her skintone.

  • Qitkat

This is going to the JLo well too much for me. This shows off her body in a way that leaves almost nothing to the imagination. It’s just the kind of slutty dress that I can imagine Costello creating, using what is probably intended for bridal. The irony.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

YIKES! Bad hair, the illustion netting is too gray and the seams are ugly.

    • anyalama

In that first shot I thought the seams were her veins!

  • willworktomorrow

Close up it does indeed look rough but on TV last night it was gorgeous and so was she.

  • NMMagpie

    Tryin’ too hard tackiness.

  • MoHub

I get very nervous about the crotchal area.

  • KT

Sorry but this is awful, full stop. This is what happens when a lacy tablecloth watches the November Rain video too many times.

  • MayzieMay

  • gksp

Hated the stripper performance. Hated the hair. Hate the illusion netting. Overall my least favorite Grammy performance. Bring on Pharrell’s hat.

    • Imasewsure

Yes I wish he had gone “full Mountie” with the outfit though… still so funny … so stupid… but at least it was new!!

  • Janet B

    Congratulations to Michael.

I liked this better when I couldn’t see the whole dress.

  • stellamaris73

The dress looks like my mother’s lace tablecloth overlay. It’s a poly blend… Really repels stains.

  • Natalia H.

    you had me at Costello.

  • Nazzzy

Kinda hate everything about this look.

  • sagecreek

No, no, no. As much as I loved Costello, this is the very definition of Trying Too Hard.

  • I love her, but blech to this dress. Her makeup needs fixing too with the smeared lip and the overwhite face.

  • Imasewsure

Agreed that she is on point with the choice but I don’t like the dress and hate the hair

  • snarkykitten

I guess but it looks tacky as hell

  • Erica_Vuitton

Loooooove this chick!!! The dress is alright and venue appropriate but the appliqués are real messy. Her performance was hot I love how she said f it and didn’t even bother drying her hair just let it air dry. Aka FLAWLESS!!

  • Stubenville

No thanks – we don’t want to see “the good china.”

  • Tarn

Her hair looks like I always try to make mine NOT look. Is this an insult to Bey, or a boost for me, that I don’t have to try anymore and I will just naturally resemble Beyonce? (in hair only, unfortunately)

The lining of the dress looks too figure-skater in some places, but she manages to make it work.

  • andi56

This dress screamed “tacky” at me so loudly, that I had to close my Mac for a few minutes, until the noise subsided.

  • LeelaST

Just as vulgar as her performance. Sorry, not be mean, that’s just how she & the dress came off to me.

  • NinjaCate

I’m actually more impressed with Costello for “getting” this than I am with Bey for wearing it. She doesn’t look bad (she’s physically incapable) but it looks… rough?

  • River

I like it, in part because she looks like she loves wearing it. Regarding the sheer tulle, yes it doesn’t match her skin tone exactly but it’s been depressing how many of these dresses use so-called “nude” tulle that is completely wrong (and photographs poorly) on WOC. It’s nice to see a browner shade being used to more closely match her glorious skin instead of creating that weird washed out effect.

  • Trickytrisha

Looks like cootch shadows are gonna continue to be part of our lives for a while.

  • SorayaS

I think the dress is utterly hideous but she is obviously loving it and looks great.

  • A Shiny O’Connor

The elbow already struggles to be sexy – don’t add off-tone wrinkled hose.

  • My stars, I can see her thigh gap through her dress. More to the point, I can see through her thigh gap through her dress. Pass the smelling salts.

B is still the hottest chick in the game, and what a way to remind everyone without saying a word. Lick it up, Miley. Lick. It. Up. Owning the Grammys (the fact that the morphologically correct spelling of that should be Grammies makes me giggle.)

  • Leslie Streeter

    No, No. No.

  • CatherineRhodes

Is she auditioning to be Michael McConaughey’s date?

  • enchanted216

  • Akemi

This is awful. Awful. She looks like a walking doily.

  • DesertDweller79

Wow, good for Michael Costello! This being the Grammys, I can maybe go for this. It isn’t black and sparkly, with a slit up the side, so I’m possibly more forgiving than usual.

I just wish the netting matched her skin tone a bit better. It looks really weird from the back that her arms don’t match her skin tone.

  • lifeisastory

I want to be happy for Michael Costello and support all things Project Runway, but good grief, she looks awful. The hair is wretched, the lipstick is smudged above her mouth, the nude panels look grey-ish and the seams up the back of her legs are in the first photo are crooked and bunchy looking. As far as the dress goes, I think this is one of those things where the idea is better than the execution. I don’t know what the hell she was thinking with hair and makeup.

  • Kate

That color lip on tay tay

  • Fred Vaughn

If it wasn’t the Grammys, I’d say “No!” In that context, it actually somehow works, especially the pattern.

  • Oh, hell, no.

  • bertkeeter

Congratulations Michael…YOUR gown is AWESOME! Considering the absolute CRAP that houses like DIOR, LANVIN, BALENCIAGA have the nerve to make celebrities wear… along with all the $$$$$ they have behind them…not including the best workrooms in the WORLD….they apparently still can’t design a decent RC Gown! KUDOS TO YOU!

  • livesarah

  • Alloy Jane

I always hate her hair. Her makeup here is terrible. But I LOVE the dress, despite the sleeves feeling like an afterthought. How is not everyone seeing how this is perfectly appropriate for Beyonce at the Grammy Awards? Maybe I love it because I’m a Costello fan. Maybe I love it because it reminds me of Mae West. But love it I do and I am not a fan of the woman wearing it, for the record.

  • yllas

I can’t post under Taylor Swift’s picture, so I’m doing it here! Ice-queen-princess? Love it! It looks like it’s made of Mithril, which is worth more than the price of the entire Shire! Thank you! (Bey looks good too)

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Bey was THIS close to showing off the good china, but it is quite a dress-well done for Michael Costello.

  • Sunraya

Tacky. I was never a fan of Costello, surprised he’s getting high profile clients. And I hate the boob shadow.

  • Dagney

The wrinkly illusion fabric just kills the look. I really want to love this though. Some of the white “lace” looks a groupie from the local craft market had a field day.

  • vienna

Did you hear about fellow PR alumni Helen’s dress for the Grammys?? I think she dressed Mary Lambert.

  • Ros

Ugliest, tackiest red carpet dress ever? Just what I would have expected from Michael Costello.

  • ISTG I thought this was Rita Ora from the thumbnail. I’m so sorry, Bey.

  • save_the_hobbit

I just read an interview someone did with him on the dress, and he’s going on about how tiny she is and that the dress is a size 2…….um, okay. I don’t think even Beyonce believes that.

  • guest2visits

It was a pretty dress sitting in the half dark – I liked it before I saw the cutaways, and up close in the light it’s got issues all over. I thought the song was a bit risqué and sexy, but it was an ok performance until Jay Z came to the stage. I was nervous about another full out sex act. It’s like I just don’t want to see what’s private for them. Really. The song is hot – kind of surprised she would pick that one to try and bring to life for the Grammys. Also; I thought the sound quality for the broadcast was mostly horrible. Either you got the lucky mike or you didn’t…. most didn’t.

  • myristica_fragrans

hate the dress, the fact that i can see her bra, and the two toned hawaiian silky. blech.

  • smh4748

Oooo, that is some bad hair. I like the dress though–there are probably five people in the world who could pull this off, and she is one of them. I agree that it looks abnormally rough up close though, which is somehow disappointing to me.

  • DuBey2

I like Michael Costello. I especially like that the underdog is more successful now than so many of his critics. And he never reacted like a drama queen on PR, at least not if I can trust my memory. I LOVE that he, according to E’s Guiiana, had THREE looks at the Grammy’s. And since she also dissed him on Fashion Police, saying that Beyonce should be wearing Couture and established designers…… I like him even MORE.

  • BummedOverGrammys

Love Beyonce… hated the red carpet hair, the paper cut out dress that was asymetrical, bizarre, and the least flattering dress she’s ever been in, and the whole opening performance was not up to her potential or the getups proceeding it. She’s so absolutely stunning and so capable that I was super disappointed by the bland show opening in the tacky bodysuit with wet hair. Her award show performances with 100 dancers and major technology are usually so impressive that this just seemed lazy with a lack of rehearsal time and might have been fine midshow as a filler, but a failure for a blow the roof off opening act that the Grammy’s should demand. As a professional performer myself, I think I have the right to say this.

  • Cera Shaz

I don’t mind this look. I feel like she’s at a point in her life where she’s over trying to be little miss perfect. She’s cool with being who she is even if that means not looking perfect. Good for her. That’s the way it should be for all of us. Too much pressure on women to have every detail together. Who really cares anyways.
