Anne Hathaway in Viktor & Rolf at the Hollywood Stands Up to Cancer Event

Posted on January 29, 2014

Love this look. She nailed the exact tone that the event required.

Anne Hathaway attends Hollywood Stands Up To Cancer Event in Culver City, California in a Viktor & Rolf  black silk jacket with studded lapel and black silk trousers from the Spring 2014 collection.

She looks dressy and night time and chic, but she doesn’t look try-hard or overdone. The problem with Gwynnie’s look was that she wore a showy, sexy dress and then tried to tone things down with a serious face.  We love the jacket and the shoes here. There’s only one thing we don’t like: the t-shirt. It’s a bit too self-consciously hi-lo. We LOVE hi-lo and it’s something we do constantly in our own style (pairing a high-end piece with a low-end one), but that t-shirt actually looks cheap in the pictures. It also looks kind of stretched out and shapeless. Worst of all, it looks like it might be jersey-style, with white raglan sleeves. That, we can’t get behind. Get yourself a cute little 5-dolla lady-tee that fits you well, girl. Don’t go out in your softball practice shirt on the red carpet. And make it a white one, because this dingy blue isn’t helping the look.

But we do like it overall! Really! It’s a total “Be me” look; a look that says “I’m fabulous and comfortable at the same time, darlings. Don’t you wish you were me at the moment?”

    Fashionably concerned. I like.

  • msdamselfly

She looks darling. So nice to see her comfortable in her own skin. I think the t-shirt looks fine-gives the look a nice, relaxed feel.

  • TropiCarla

The hair is looking good — thumbs up to her whole head.

    • MilaXX

I agree and that’s a really great lip color on her.

      • marlie

THAT’S the way to do a downplayed lip.

        • demidaemon

          Agreed! Listen to Carmindy, people!

  • A little silk-jersey t in either black or a colour would be good.

  • Sobaika

Yes, a cute white (or light grey) t would have upped this look a bit.

I’m ready for Annie to get back on the radar.

    • Evan

Yes, I think she’s talented and she generally seems nice and “normal” compared to most other celebrities, like she’s approachable, friendly and down-to-earth. I didn’t get the whole Hathahate thing. Her Oscar’s speech was almost unbearable, but I’d rather someone be a try-hard than not try at all. And it’s not like she’s done anything bad. Obviously I don’t know her personally, but she seems like a good person. I look forward to her doing more singing roles. I think she’s playing Judy Garland in an upcoming film?

      • Sobaika

I have always liked her, but the “oh gosh golly really me??” act celebs put on when they win an award really bugs. Especially when it’s one they’ve been stumping hard for and their speeches seem so rehearsed. And they cut into other winners’ time to thank more people they forgot. And then maybe rumors about trying to appear likeable and changing their Oscar dress last minute because of something insignificant start to leak…

She did the smart thing and took some time out of the public eye – too many celebs are in a bubble where they don’t realize just how annoying they are.

        • Evan

That’s true. As I said, I found her almost unbearable on Oscar’s night and the whole dress switcheroo was ridiculous. Lady Gaga took a few months out of the public eye though and that didn’t seem to work for her lol Probably because she was just as pretentious if not more pretentious when she came back and her new album isn’t as good as some of her previous work.

      • Jacob Bowen

Amen! I don’t understand the Hathahate either! She will ALWAYS be on my LOVE list because there is no movie that makes me happier and more nostalgic than “The Princess Diaries”. As a wee gay lad I used to hide the fact that I LOVED it and would watch it when no one was around.

  • Latin Buddy

Um….are we NOT going to talk about Annie dropping Zoe as her stylist. Hope JLaw follows suit

    • Adrianna Grężak

Really? They seemed to be close friends on Bravo’s Rachel Zoe Project. Where did you hear?

      • marlie

I saw it in the twitterverse somewhere a couple of days ago (maybe TLo?).

  • jw_ny

yep…the tee was going to be my only criticism here.

They look like they’re going to 2 different events. This reads evening party, where Gwynnie’s reads daytime/luncheon…probably due to the makeup and accessorizing.

  • marlie

I love this! The jacket is HOT, and I’ve just realized that I have to have it. I love her shoes too. Her hair and makeup are really pretty. I don’t like the hint of white from the shirt peeking out, but otherwise, I have no complaints!

  • Imasewsure

I’m ready to like her again and miss her fashion sense. Don’t blow it Annie… I have forgiven you (even though you did absolutely nothing wrong of course). Adorable suit.. cruel shoes

    • Anna

Ha, love that! How I feel about her too. I turned on her last year, even though she did nothing to me personally and her only crime really was being nominated for and subsequently winning an Academy Award.

      • demidaemon

I got annoyed with her for a hot minute, but that was only because she was everywhere. I got over it pretty quickly.

  • Lilithcat

Nice! Agree about the t-shirt; I’d swap it out for a short-sleeved or sleeveless cashmere sweater. (And, in fact, I often wear a cashmere top/silk pants combination for an evening at the theater.)

  • manina

I guess I am the only one that doesn’t like this look. It looks fake to me, like she “just threw something on”. Her new stylist is trying to dress her to match with her new husband? Does she have any sense of fashion herself?

  • Anna

The white from the raglan baseball sleeve bugs, but adorable look otherwise. Love the blazer and I’m getting Linda Evangelista from the hair, which of course, LOVE.

  • @Biting Panda

    A solid well done.

  • camdiggidy

I agree about the tee. She needs a cute lil’ shrunken metal band T-shirt under that jacket. This looks like a brand-new medium-sized men’s Hanes right out of the 5-pack.

  • KinoEye

Fabulous hair. The last time she was featured, another kitten said she had the right face for some Liza with a ‘Z’ type hair. Whoever you were, you hit the nail on the head!

  • sagecreek

    Ha! Eat that, Gwynnie.

  • SugarSnap108

Yep, the tee is the only misstep. But overall she looks appropriately dressy without being flashy. And her head is adorbs.

  • Mightiadd

This outfit looks more like “going out after work for drinks with the girls” than attending a charity event for a serious cause.

    • sagecreek

Well, the only other outfit we’ve seen from this event sported bare abs, so I’m not sure this is as inappropriate as you think.

      • Mightiadd

Hathaway and Paltrow can’t be the only two women who attended this event. Maybe all the others made better choices.

    • lunchcoma

The tone seems about right for me. I think it’s the “after work” bit that makes me feel it’s fairly appropriate. This is serious business, so I like seeing hints of suit rather than evening gown or cocktail dress.

  • Adrianna Grężak

Totally had the same thought in regards to the t-shirt

  • ljh

I don’t think that tee is a softball-style raglan. It actually looks semi-dressy in that it seems to be sleeveless, with that circular band around the neck being like a halter (don’t know the correct term garment-structurally speaking). I think what T&Lo are seeing as the white of a raglan sleeve is actually skin. I wholeheartedly love this look!

    • filmcricket

That’s not skin unless her neck is three shades darker than her shoulder.

      • ljh

As I look at it more, I think you are right. I guess I was seeing what I *wanted* it to be– I’d love this outfit with a sleeveless, round-neck, matte-silk blouse.

        • demidaemon

I originally thought it was a halter top style blouse until TLo picked out the finer details.

  • mjude

I’m feeling Judy Garland. love the shoes

  • HeatherMcIlrath

    i am coveting that jacket!

  • Shug

    That lip color is fantastic.

  • mlle

I don’t know why she’s carrying such a boxy bag, especially when it blends in with her outfit. Love that the pointed toe on her shoes complements the detailing on her lapels, love the general feel of the outfit, but (as everyone else has already said) she needs a better shirt.

    • sagecreek

Why is she carrying a bag at all? Doesn’t she have people for that?

  • Anathema_Device

This is my favorite kind of dressing. Agree about the shirt. Something in a better fabric or with a little texture would have been nice.

She is still rocking the short hair. I like the way it is styled here.

  • kimmeister

The spikes on the lapel protrude a little too much for my taste (I’d probably perforate everything in sight, by accident), but it’s still cool. This is probably one of the looks that Nina Garcia would recommend pairing with a white Hanes tee from a 3-pack.

    • I was thinking it’d be quite good for fending off unwanted hugs.

      • Sabin

        Ooh, I need one!

  • VioletFem

Love it. It hits the perfect balance of looking put together, but not too showy. Plus, her hair and makeup are flawless.

  • YES, THIS, THANK YOU. Also I’ve been yelling over in the other threads about the clothing being wrong for a daytime charity event – I don’t know where I got the idea that this was daytime, but I’ll shut up and drink my tea now. (ETA: Her little hiatus really improved her image, didn’t it?)

    • mlle

I’m also under the impression that it was a daytime event, even though I have absolutely no evidence for this. Can anyone confirm or deny?

  • MzzPants

Glad she’s keeping the post Les Mis pixie.

  • alyce1213

I love that jacket, I want it. I agree the t-shirt is off.

  • Erica_Vuitton

So her new stylist has put her in three different suits so far. I’d like to see what else she can come up with for Anne. STILL disappointed she left Zoe and didn’t go directly to Brad.

  • Lilyana_F

That’s pretty cool, didn’t expect it from her.

  • Jecca2244

i can see the new stylist’s effect! i love the look of a blazer and t-shirt.

  • This low-key, quirky androgyny she’s working lately really suits her. Maybe she’s found her fashion niche?

    • lbl

      Or her new stylist did

      • Whoever is responsible deserves a hearty pat on the back. Part of me hopes it’s her husband.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Well done, hitting just the right notes for this type of event. Some other ladystars (cough, cough) could learn from this.

  • Kelly

Is this t-shirt even blue? To me, it just looks like another example of how impossible it is to find black separates that are the same shade of black. But maybe it just looks black(ish) on my computer.

  • quiltrx

Really cute look. I love the jacket!

  • jilly_d

The shirt doesn’t bug me; for me it’s a casual WERQ. Love that lip color on her!

  • Tracy_Flick

Hey, look! Lipstick! She looks cute.

  • Gatto Nero

Great jacket, pants, and accessories, and very event appropriate. I wondered about that peek of white fabric; a two-tone raglan-sleeve tee would be a bridge too far.
But overall she did well. A nice respite from all the boobage, etc., on display.

  • Nonnah

I like the navy and black combo.

  • Carly Clement

I am wondering if anyone else thinks she might be in the early stages of pregnancy…. She hasnt been doing heaps of press lately and has been wearing the loser fit things a bit recently… (also on the outfit… change shirt and lip colour and maybe to a different shoe because this one just doesn’t quite fit in and I would be on board)

  • guest2visits

Love when she leans more chic, less twee. So pretty, love the shoes.

  • fooepi

That purse looks cute and is a good size. Wait why am I even wondering? It probably costs as much as our car.
